The Blood Oath Cycle #0.5

The Bone Altar Bride

Rate this book
A Gothic Romantasy Novella, approximately 26,500 words / 124 print pages, and Book One of The Blood Oath Cycle.

This short, intense, fast-moving series opener is designed as a concentrated first entry into the world, with a complete central romantic and curse-breaking resolution. The wider world expands in Book Two, The Ash-Bound Daughter, a full-length novel.

She was chosen as a bride. She came as a healer.

Every thirteen years, beneath a Blood Moon, Alderfen offers a bride to the Unnamed King, ensuring that the curse remains bound and the village continues to survive. This year, the lot falls on Liora Hale, a healer—and more importantly, not her little sister. In the square, before everyone she has ever known, Liora is asked the only question that matters—do you consent? She agrees and is swiftly taken into the King's realm.
To her surprise, the Unnamed King is not the mindless beast Alderfen fears. In fact, he's named Kael—the name the temple uses because his real one was stolen—an immortal king bound in iron chains and forced to bleed for an Oath he did not forge. In his fortress, pain has a voice, and the curse has a hunger. Brides do not simply die; they become part of what is waiting. Liora refuses obedience. She asks the questions no one survives asking, and the fortress answers with whispers, Remnants of those who came before her and never truly left. The deeper she goes, the clearer the truth becomes. Names are power, and "bride" is only the prettiest chain.
To see dawn, Liora and the chained king must descend into the bones of the curse, toward the Heart of the Oath and the bone-rooted altar beneath it, and decide what they are willing to claim back. His name, her life. It's their choice.

For readers who want:
Gothic atmosphere, a healer heroine, a chained false-monster king, sacrificial bride ritual, corrupt priesthood, true-name magic, dangerous-before-safe devotion, and a complete novella-length romantic fantasy arc.

Content note: Adult. Not YA. Contains open-door romantic content, dark ritual imagery, supernatural violence, and captivity themes.

I received a copy of this book for free for promotional purposes.

I loved that the book started off with the famous bird quote from Jane Eyre as an epigraph. Jane Eyre is one of my favorite books and that quote was perfect for the book! It matched the story so well.

Since this is a novella, it is incredibly fast paced. No time was wasted and the story started right away. From the beginning it grabbed my attention.

The beginning gave me major Hunger Games vibes with the way the bride was chosen. Also, the main character, Liora, has a younger sister she wants to protect from being chosen.

The book was a little too heavy on the insta-love for my taste. I get that this is a novella so things have to move quickly, but it could have been slowed down a bit.

The novella was successful in creating intrigue for the rest of the series. It set up the world nicely and I am curious to see how everything will unfold in future books.

For music lovers, the author has a playlist online for the book. It’s full of classical music that provides the perfect background music while reading and helps immerse you into the atmosphere of the story.

Overall, if you are looking for a quick fantasy book, consider reading this one!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The Bone Altar Bride is a dark, gothic romantasy that acts as a total mind game from the very first page. It is an engrossing, alive, and heart-throbbing read that beautifully weaves horror and romance together, wrapped in a striking cover that perfectly matches the intense aesthetic inside.

My Reactions & Emotions:
Instant Psychological Tension: The story drops you straight into a high-stakes psychological trap. The unfairness of the opening selection process immediately had me on edge, triggering a strong emotional wave of defiance on behalf of the main character against a rigged system.
A Brilliant Mind Shift: What completely hooked me was the psychological subversion of the male main character. He is absolutely not the enemy I was conditioned to expect, and watching that internal shift happen as the layers of deception peeled away was incredibly thrilling.
Intense, Magnetic Chemistry: The romantic tension is steaming right from the jump. It creates a dark, magnetic pull between the leads that keeps you entirely locked into their emotional wavelength.

What I Loved:
A Rhythmic, Hypnotic Voice: The writing style is deeply poetic, flowery, and rhythmic. It reads with a distinct lyrical cadence that creates a hypnotic, atmospheric mood, perfectly matching the dramatic weight of a gothic romance.
The Final Release: I appreciated that the romantic arc culminates in an explicit, high-heat scene at the end. It provided a powerful, clear emotional payoff after chapters of built-up tension.

Constructive Criticism (What the author could have done to earn 5 stars):
Create Smoother Mental Transitions: To earn that perfect score, the paragraph transitions needed to feel less abrupt. The narrative flow occasionally felt choppy, which pulled me out of the immersive experience. I also wanted a deeper psychological grounding for the magic system—the book needed to explicitly clarify the internal mechanics of why the protagonist is fundamentally different from the other women and how her unique abilities actually work.
Deliver a Completely Satisfying Resolution: While the romance delivers, the broader plot intentionally leaves the strings untangled to set up a sequel about a corrupt priesthood. The story would have been much more satisfying if it had been executed as a self-contained standalone; forcing the plot into a series structure left the final pages feeling a bit compromised rather than fully resolved.

Final Thoughts:
If you are looking for a dark, atmospheric romantasy that plays with your expectations and delivers a brooding, gothic chemistry, this is a fantastic read. While the structural transitions and world-building logic had some rough edges, the intense emotional and psychological ride makes it a very strong 4-star experience.

ARC received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I had a really good time with this novella! The concept was super interesting, the pacing was spot on, and I absolutely loved the two main characters. Their banter was probably my favorite part. I was smiling through so many of their interactions.

Fair warning for my fellow romance readers: there's no smut in this one. Sorry, ladies! 😂 But honestly, I didn't miss it. The story and character dynamics were strong enough to keep me fully invested.

One thing I really appreciated was that it never felt too short or too long. It told the story it wanted to tell, kept me engaged the whole way through, and left me wanting to explore more of this world.

Overall, this was a quick, fun, and addictive read. Great characters, great banter, an intriguing premise, and honestly... I don't really have anything bad to say about it. If this novella was meant to convince me to pick up more from this series, it definitely worked! ⭐️

E.C. Gregory's intent behind The Bone Altar Bride was to set the scene. Well done... I want more.

From the start, you're tossed into Alderfen's situation with little context: they are looking to choose a bride for the Unnamed King so a curse can be kept in check. A bride is chosen, but not the expected one, Liora accepts her fate with grace and determination.

Here is where it started to get interesting for me: the selection happens every 13 years, and during that time, the elders of the town can try to "buy" or bargain for the protection of their loved ones. In the end, the selection is not really fair, which starts to hint at the corruption in the priesthood.

When she finally arrives at the Unnamed King's fortress and meets him, everything she thought she knew slowly starts to crumble. This only encouraged her to want to know more and get to the bottom of things.

I loved Liora: she's tenacious, smart, curious, and compassionate. A well-rounded FMC who becomes the heroine of our story. She is a strong female lead, and the way she broke down the Unnamed King's defenses was beautiful.

And Kael, our Unnamed King, is not what the town's stories depicted him to be. He's broken but selfless. Until Liora makes him realize he does not need to lead a life of martyrdom if he just lets her in. I loved Kael so much: he was not afraid to open up and be vulnerable. He allowed himself to trust her and in that, he found freedom. His character arc is chef's kiss.

The connection between the two is immediate; it's like they were bound to meet by fate. From the start of the story, you understand that Liora is destined to break the curse.

On to the more technical side of things. The story is beautifully written and has great elements of a dark and gothic tale: a haunting atmosphere created by an unknown godlike entity and the eerie spirits that haunt the fortress. For a short novella, the pace was fast but not overwhelming. Everything felt perfectly timed. The only miss for me was that at times, because of the lyrical cadence, I was not able to visualize properly what was going on when we hit the climax of the story. But overall, that did not take away from the experience this novella is.

Lastly, I loved that Gregory included a playlist and listening guide. While that did not work for me, since it distracted me from reading, for those who love to immerse themselves in reading... it will be a hit. I listened to the playlist on its own, and the selection of classical music was superb and well-suited to the tale.

Thank you, Hawthorn & Aster for the ARC copy - please note that my opinions are my own (I'm not a sellout 😛) and I will always be 100% transparent.

“The bell in the square tolled thirteen times.”

★ ★ ☆ ☆ ☆

I felt as if I was reading a 400+ page book squeezed into a 150 page novella.
And I tried so hard to love it, but...

Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate it, the idea was great, but the execution was... poor.

The plotline:
Every blood moon, a young girl is chosen from the village of Alderfen to be a bride for the Unnamed King, who is bound by an Oath to the God their village worships so thoroughly. When Liora is chosen, she discovers that not all is as it seems as she navigates the dangers lurking in the King's castle. Will Liora save the people or doom them all to the wrath of a God?
Sounds pretty cool, right? I thought so too.

Sooooo... what happened?...
I really wanted to like this, buuuut it was quite hard to enjoy with the underwhelming lack of world building and pacing all over the place.
And the romance?
“'I want you' he said, his voice rough and his eyes pinned to her mouth."
You've literally known her for a few hours chill-

I feel like I'm being quite pessimistic. It wasn't all that bad!
I liked the hunger-games-reaping-esque in the first chapter. Probably plagiarized but oh well.
And despite all my complaining, I read it in just a few hours.

There was so much potential and it really could have flourished as a normal sized novel, but hey ho I guess!

Thank you so much to Hawthorn & Aster with providing me with an e-arc in exchange for my honest review!

This book absolutely consumed me from the very first page. The Bone Altar Bride delivered everything I love in dark gothic fantasy—haunting atmosphere, brutal tension, emotionally damaged characters, and a romance that felt equal parts intoxicating and devastating. Every chapter pulled me deeper into its eerie world, and I genuinely couldn’t stop thinking about it whenever I put it down.

The chemistry between the main characters was electric in the most dangerous way possible. Their relationship wasn’t soft or easy—it was messy, obsessive, painful, and completely addictive to read. The emotional push and pull had me screaming internally the entire time. And the gothic setting? Absolutely stunning. The crumbling castles, shadows, chains, secrets, and constant feeling of dread made the whole story feel cinematic.

What really stood out to me was how emotional this book became beneath all the darkness. There’s so much grief, longing, betrayal, and vulnerability woven into the story that I ended up deeply attached to the characters. Some scenes genuinely left me speechless.

If you love dark fantasy romance with gothic vibes, morally grey characters, tension that will ruin your life, and a story that completely traps you in its world, this is 100% a must-read.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A haunting, addictive masterpiece that I’ll be thinking about for a very long time.

The Bone Altar Bride was everything I love in a dark fantasy romance: atmospheric worldbuilding, a compelling mystery, a tortured hero, and a heroine determined to challenge fate itself.
From the opening chapters, I was pulled into Alderfen and the terrifying tradition that sends a Blood Moon bride to the Unnamed King every thirteen years. What could have been a simple beauty-and-the-beast style story quickly becomes something much deeper as the secrets surrounding the Bone Altar, the vanished brides, and the curse begin to unravel.
Liora was such a strong protagonist. She's intelligent, compassionate, stubborn, and refuses to quietly accept the role others have chosen for her. As a healer, her instinct is always to help and protect, but she never loses her sharp edge. I loved how she consistently challenged both the curse and the people around her instead of simply reacting to events.
Kael was exactly the kind of tortured hero I gravitate toward. Beneath the legend and fear surrounding him is a man carrying centuries of guilt, grief, and sacrifice. His relationship with Liora develops gradually through trust, understanding, and shared determination, which made every emotional moment land even harder.
One of my favorite aspects was the atmosphere. The fortress feels alive with history, the remnants of previous brides add an eerie layer to the story, and the constant sense of dread surrounding the curse creates tension throughout. The themes of identity, devotion, sacrifice, and reclaiming power are woven beautifully into both the fantasy and romance elements.
The romance itself is emotional rather than rushed, built on mutual respect and growing trust. Every moment between Liora and Kael felt earned, which made the eventual payoff incredibly satisfying.
Overall, The Bone Altar Bride is a haunting, emotional fantasy romance filled with dark magic, dangerous devotion, and characters you can't help but root for. A fantastic read for anyone who loves cursed kings, gothic atmospheres, and heroines who refuse to bow to destiny.

This book wasn’t bad, but for me personally I feel like I need more from the romance of it’s going to convince me. This is a novella and it had a lot going on, and we have a romance plot alongside a fantasy plot, and I feel that this book allowed both plots to take a hit in order to have both of them.

It’s literally just because of how short it is, the romance felt half-cooked. They meet, they’re breaking a curse but they’re starting to like each other, and on paper it looks like it progresses at an acceptable speed, but for me… I don’t know, I think I just need more fluff and filler to feel connected to a romance plot.

The world building was decent, I enjoyed the lore for sure but the way this book is written made me struggle to connect with it a bit. I would love to read a full length novel version of this story, maybe stretch it out a bit and add some more filler scenes where there’s romantic stuff happening. The setting makes that kind of thing limited but I just felt like we jumped into his bed too quickly 🥹

Thanks so much for the ARC to read and review! I got this book from Netgalley

This was my first gothic romance read, and I don’t regret it one bit! I read it all in 1 day 🖤⛓️‍💥

The writing was so poetic and beautifully detailed. I especially loved that there weren’t really any frustrating cliffhangers, and we actually get some closure on what happens with Liora and Arion! 🥹

I’m definitely looking forward to the next installment of this series. This world is so incredibly interesting, and I thought this was an amazing prequel! 👏

I absolutely support this author and hope they continue to follow their dreams and keep writing because I’m excited to see where this story takes us next! 🖤

This prequel novella was so hauntingly beautiful.

As an avid reader, I am always playing the story as a movie in my head, and because this novella had its own classical playlist, it really elevated the experience. Not only did I have the gothic movie vibes in my head, but I also had an epic playlist to go with it. Absolutely amazing!

This novella is beautifully written, and it touched my soul and made me feel.

This novella follows a fantastic young healer named Liora. Every thirteen years in her village, under a Blood Moon, a bride is chosen to appease the Unnamed King. This time, when the bride is chosen, it is Liora, and she cannot say no lest her sister pay the sacrifice.

Liora goes not knowing what she will face, and when she arrives at the castle, nothing is what she expected it would be. The Unnamed King does in fact have a name, and it is Kael. He is an incredibly tortured soul, and not the monster everyone (including Liora) thought he would be.

As the truth comes out during their journey together, they both face incredible odds and a power so terrible that it threatens to destroy them both.

If you enjoy gothic vibes, corrupt priesthoods, sacrifice, badass heroines, and tortured souls, this is the novella for you! Thank you Hawthorn & Aster for the book!

Short, atmospheric, and exactly what you need when you want something that pulls you in without demanding a whole weekend.

Gregory gives you characters worth caring about and a world worth returning to and does it all in novella length, which is genuinely harder than it sounds. Liora is sent as a bride to a king her village fears as a mindless beast and arrives to find something far more complicated and far more worth saving. It's a sweet story about finding love in the darkness.

It's not reinventing the wheel. The gothic romantasy beats are familiar. But it executes them well enough that it doesn't matter. As a series opener, it plants its seeds of intrigue and leaves you wanting more. Which is exactly what a first book should do.

Short, atmospheric, and genuinely beautiful.

A curse forces the village to present a bride to the unnamed king every 13 years during the blood moon. Liora was chosen this year in protecting of her sister. They were taught about this king and the death that followed every bride who is given to him. But when Liora arrived, nothing was as told. She was presented without challenges to overcome and battles to fight. She learned quickly like fighting battles such as these are never to be fought alone.

What a BADASS FMC and resilient woman stepping up for her people. This adventure was quick but satisfying. Fast pace without making you feel like it’s rushed. Her smart tongue and strong energy was perfectly displayed with helping the king finds his hope to truly save the people. Ugh I loved this so much and can’t wait for book 2!

Must read! I recommend!

2.5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐

First, I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with this Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review.

It is seriously impressive how much story the author managed to pack into just 124 pages! The premise is strong, and the ability to map out a complete narrative arc in such a short novella is impressive.

However, as a reader who typically gravitates toward high fantasy and deeply character driven books, I found that the incredibly fast pacing came at the expense of emotional impact. Because the plot moved so quickly, there wasn't quite enough room for the world building or character development to breathe. Everything fell into place a bit too easily, which ultimately pulled me out of the story rather than keeping me fully engaged.
While I went into this fully aware of the novella format, I think I would have preferred a more narrow, deeply focused scope that left me wanting more, rather than a fully wrapped up plot that lacked emotional depth.
Overall, it's a fast paced read with a great concept, but it just needed a bit more breathing room to truly deliver an emotional punch.

This was a really fun opening to what will eventually become a new series. Touted as book 0.5, this novella packs quite a punch in its 148 pages. The world building is steady and the romance is definitely on the insta love side, but this never deterred me. I believe love in first sight is a thing, and that Loria and Kael definitely experienced it. To me it felt like a written in the stars kind of love. Loria was my favorite character though for her strength, inquisitiveness and curiosity. I love a FMC that shares characteristics with me! The novella wraps up neatly but has me excited to see what happens in the first full length novel!

I received a copy from BookBaby through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

When Liora Hale’s name was selected as the next sacrificial bride, she’s numb. It’s a Blood Moon, and if the Unnamed King doesn’t get a new bride, her village will go through a rough year for disobeying the curse. However, Liora knows the truth behind her name coming up, and she’s desperate for answers to questions she’s always been lectured for daring to ask. When it turns out the Unnamed King and the curse are completely different from what she’s been told her whole life, Liora is ready to fight back.

I thought this novella sounded pretty interesting, and the first half had me totally hooked! We follow Liora from the moment she’s about to learn she’s been selected as the latest bride. I think the plot was an interesting concept, and I really did enjoy seeing all the lies unravel. However, I think it would’ve worked better as a full-length book rather than a novella. There just wasn’t enough time to properly build up a romance, so it ended up falling completely flat on that front.

That said, I really did enjoy the first half of the novella. It had a lot of potential and I think it would’ve worked really well as a full-length book or a novella without the romance plot. Unfortunately, I’m on the fence about checking out the first installment when it comes out. By the time I reached the final page, I had forgotten that this is the opening to a series rather than a stand-alone romantasy novella. The story wrapped up pretty well for me, so I’m not feeling particularly drawn to continuing, but we’ll see what happens.

I was given an ARC of this book. I am leaving my honest review below.

This was a short but non-stop action fantasy with a little romance.
I liked the world and wanted more (which I guess is good for a novella). I wanted more behind the myth.
I think what I wanted more was the time in the castle. Our main FMC is hauled off to be the bride quickly, and from there, everything really just takes off. Because of this, the feelings between the FMC and MMC felt rushed and not as believable. I wanted to explore the journey within the castle more and have the romance develop over time. Each challenge felt so quick without pause (which, once again, I can assume from the novella). The down point is that I tend to just go along with things rather than feeling like I fully get to absorb the journey and feel immersed in it.
I enjoyed the characters, but never really felt like I got to fully know them. However, they did have some good lines. The one that stuck with me was:
"Maybe they didn't break because you were too much," she said, looking up to meet his gaze. "Maybe they broke because they weren't enough." - Liora (FMC)
I am curious to see where the story goes from here because it felt like this was a complete story and could stand on its own without a cliffhanger and having a HEA.
In the end, my only disappointment was that this was a novella and that the shortness of it took away from fully fleshing out the plot and characters, which would have brought me more into the story.

💭 REVIEW THOUGHTS

I knew this was going to be a good read from the moment I picked it up - I just had that feeling. And it was confirmed by the time I got to page 8 where I was already able to see the world being built for us by E.C. Gregory though, it had been a mere eight pages since beginning to weave this tale.

I was shocked, pleasantly so, as I continued to read. I was immediately interested in the characters. I felt for the FMC, being called upon by the blood moon to be a sacrificial bride in order to save her kingdom from a curse. She knew nothing of what awaited her, but knew that none chosen before her ever returned.

I immediately fell into step as the FMC confronts the cursed king who she is to marry, and begins to realize everything is not as it seems, and some stories and lessons we are taught are simply lies used for control.

This book had a very clear overtone of good vs. evil, but it was done in such a beautifully haunting way. The writing paints a clear picture of suffering, and what it means to tear yourself apart as you crack under the weight of bad decisions. It also reminds us that everyone is deserving of love, and that pure love, the drive to truly see another in their soul, can heal the deepest cracks in our hearts, and sever the strongest of chains.

I will definitely be picking up the next book in this series!

Thank you to the author for providing an advance reader copy. This review reflects my honest opinion.

The Bone Altar Bride is a short tale about an Unnamed King and young woman who has been sent to him as a sacrifice. His reputation is cruel but what she finds is far from it.

I wanted to enjoy this. The blurb captivated me as it is a genre I really love. I just couldn't connect with the characters. I think it is because a novella is usually a standalone or placed between a series.

This is my own problem and not the fault of the book. When I read, I picture everything like a movie in my mind. Due to this, a could imagine the characters. I don't really recall them being described as such. I would of liked to imagine them when getting immersed in their tale.

There was a lot of use of, he said, she asked etc. This is ok, it just kind of got annoying to read.

Overall, the premise is really good. The execution could be better or this placed as like a 0.5 in the series and the sequel be book 1, but book 1 released first. So we have to go back for the lore.

The Bone Altar Bride is a fast paced novella, with extremely high stakes. Its everything I could ask for in a dark gothic fantasy. I was absolutely hooked from the first few pages. There were no slow, tedious parts. Every page had some sort of action, twist, or tension.

Liora is such a bada**. She will not let anyone treat her like a child and shes determined to do what's best for HER. She doesnt listen to others when they tell her to act a certain way or think a certain way. I loved seeing how she stepped out of her shell and started standing up for herself.

I was surprised to see theres another book and i cant wait to read it!

Liora has quietly wished for more, but remains obedient to her life. When she is called to be a sacrifice to a continued peace for her village, she rebels against a demon/god holding her and a captive king. This book reveals the power of names, that determination holds powerful magic, and being united, together, in working toward a goal is the answer. I thoroughly enjoyed this paranormal romance.

A beautifully crafted gothic romantasy that promises a dark and fantastical world for the main series. The Bone Altar Bride follows Liora, an unwilling sacrificial bride chosen for a terrifying faceless god in exchange for his mercy. Relieved that her younger sister was spared, Liora, a healer, becomes her village’s sacrificial lamb. But instead of finding a quick death, she discovers a cursed man named Kael, chained and forced to serve the faceless god.
What follows is a gorgeous tale of a man carrying a painful burden he believes he deserves and a woman who decides he never has to bear it alone.
Even though this novella is incredibly short, it still delivers an epic romantic tale that I think romantasy lovers will enjoy, especially those who love forced arrangements, dark gothic settings, religious rebellion, and an emotionally strong FMC who delivers all the swoon-worthy lines. I was extremely lucky to have been gifted both the standard copy and the special edition; the special edition includes tons of gorgeous inlays with amazing art and think everyone should grab that edition. I’m definitely looking forward to the release of THE ASH-BOUND DAUGHTER and reading Mira's story of resistance.

I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The beginning reminded me a lot of The Hunger Games. Every daughter in the village has their names put in a pool that the village priest draws from to become The Unnamed King's "Bride" every time there is a Blood Moon or else their harvest will wilt, rot, and die due to a curse. To appease their God, they have to sacrifice one of their daughters for the sake of the village.

This had a lot of potential, but it was lacking in a lot of areas. This would have been really well done if the story had been stretched out more and had more filler, world building, and actual romance. The horror and emotions the characters are being put through don't really carry across. I loved the idea, but it needed more of an impact. The pacing is all over place and there's no build up. There's sadly no real depth there. The plot sounded great, just the execution was poor.

There's also something about the writing and repetitiveness of certain words and phrases that caught my attention in a bad way and kept drawing me out of the story. A lot of parts in the book read like AI, and if that is the case, that could largely explain a large chunk of why it feels like there is a lot missing in this book and why some parts don't sound right or make sense. It feels like it was written by AI, and I just couldn't finish reading it.

A dark romantic got his tale that had me in the edge off my seat from the first page. A sacrificial bride to help keep everything well and as it is. Sounds easy, until you get love and angst involved. A fun fast read that I highly recommend to any gothic tale lovers. Happy reading!

If you are hunting for a fantasy romance to sink your teeth into, look no further than E.C. Gregory’s The Bone Altar Bride. Serving as the fast-paced, gothic opener to The Blood Oath Cycle, this novella is a quick and engaging read that sets a solid stage for the rest of the series. Despite its shorter page count, Gregory manages to weave a high-stakes tale of sacrifice, true-name magic, and slow-burning intimacy that leaves a lasting impression.

The story drops readers straight into the dark, tension-filled village of Alderfen. Every thirteen years beneath the glow of a Blood Moon, the village must offer a sacrifice to ensure its survival against a looming curse: they must deliver a human bride to the terrifying, enigmatic figure known only as the Unnamed King. This year, the lot falls on Liora Hale, a local healer. For Liora, the selection is a heavy burden, but it comes with one vital silver lining—it means the terrifying fate will not fall upon her little sister.

Standing in the town square before everyone she has ever known, Liora is asked the ultimate question: “Do you consent?” Stepping into her power and accepting her duty, she agrees, swiftly crossing the threshold into the King’s shadowy, black-iron fortress. However, once inside the belly of the curse, Liora discovers that the myths propagated by the village temple are steeped in deception. The Unnamed King is not the mindless, bloodthirsty monster of legend. He is an immortal king bound in heavy iron chains, forced to bleed for an ancient Oath he did not forge.

Given the constraints of a novella length, there are natural limitations to how much world-building or granular subplots can fit within the text. However, Gregory does a stellar job of developing the characters within a concentrated space, giving both leads distinct, resonant arcs.

Liora begins the narrative defined by her role as a healer and her fiercely protective, self-sacrificing love for her sister. Yet, upon arriving at the fortress, her arc transforms from one of passive submission to active defiance. She flatly refuses blind obedience. Leveraging her sharp mind, Liora begins asking the dangerous questions that previous brides never survived to voice. She evolves from a sacrificial pawn into a bold investigator determined to dismantle the very system that bound her.

The King’s arc is a beautifully executed psychological subversion. He begins as a figure cloaked in fear and monstrous expectations—referred to by the temple as "Kael" only because his true name was stolen. Trapped in a cycle of eternal captivity and immense pain, his arc centers on reclamation. Through his magnetic, high-heat chemistry with Liora, he shifts from a defensive, resigned captive into a man ready to fight back. His journey is one of reclaiming his agency, his stolen identity, and his capacity for dangerous, protective devotion.

Together, the pair must descend into the literal bones of the curse, heading toward the bone-rooted altar at the Heart of the Oath to decide what they are willing to trade: his name, or her life.

E.C. Gregory writes with a deeply poetic, lyrical cadence that makes the eerie, glass-and-iron setting feel wonderfully alive. Because the pacing is concentrated and fast-moving, the romance develops with an intense, magnetic pull that culminates in an incredibly satisfying payoff.

While this book delivers a complete and resolved romantic arc for Liora and Kael, it intentionally leaves broader threads untangled regarding the corrupt priesthood and the wider world. This novella functions perfectly as the entry point for the next book in the series, The Ash-Bound Daughter, which will expand into a full-length novel focusing on Liora's sister. The ending leaves you entirely invested in the fate of this world, and I will definitely be picking up the next book to see what happens next. If you want a dark, romantic escape that you can finish in a single sitting, The Bone Altar Bride is highly recommended.

This was one of those books that left me torn when it came time to write a review.
There is no denying that the author has a beautiful writing style. The atmosphere is rich, immersive, and layered with haunting imagery that brings every scene to life. From the cursed kingdom to the weight of ancient promises and forgotten names, the world feels carefully crafted.

The story leans heavily into themes of sacrifice, identity, duty, and the power that comes from reclaiming what has been taken from you. The lore surrounding the curse, the rituals, and the mysterious king bound by forces beyond his control was easily one of the strongest aspects of the book for me.

I especially appreciated how much attention was given to the emotional and symbolic elements of the story. The idea of a healer being offered to a feared king, only to discover that truth and legend are not the same thing, creates an intriguing foundation.

There is a constant sense that something deeper is hidden beneath the surface, and the unraveling of those secrets kept me interested. The fortress itself almost feels alive at times, carrying the weight of everyone who came before and the consequences of choices made long ago.

Where I struggled was with the characters themselves.

While I understood who they were and what they represented within the story, I never felt truly connected to them. Liora is strong, determined, and willing to challenge what everyone else accepts as fact, but I found myself wanting more emotional depth and complexity from her.

Kael fits very much into the soft, protective, devoted hero archetype, and while I can absolutely see why many readers will fall in love with him, I personally wanted more tension, unpredictability, and emotional conflict.

The romance was the biggest hurdle for me. It developed much faster than I tend to enjoy, and it carried strong insta-love vibes throughout the story. Because of that, I never fully bought into the emotional connection between the characters.

I prefer relationships that build slowly through trust, conflict, and gradual emotional growth, so the romantic arc simply did not resonate with me the way I had hoped.

That being said, this book absolutely knows its audience. Readers who love softer romances, loyal and affectionate heroes, strong heroines who refuse to bend, emotional fantasy worlds, and relationships built around devotion rather than tension will likely have a wonderful time with this story.

There is a lot of heart woven into these pages, and the themes of breaking chains, reclaiming identity, and choosing your own fate are handled with care.

While this was not the right fit for my personal reading tastes, I can still appreciate the skill behind the writing and the vivid world the author created.

The atmosphere, lore, and emotional themes were far stronger for me than the character dynamics, but I have no doubt that readers who enjoy insta-love romance and golden retriever heroes will find much more to love here than I did.

There is something wonderfully haunting about The Bone Altar Bride. From the opening pages, E.C. Gregory creates a gothic atmosphere filled with curses, rituals, whispered secrets, and a sense of longing that lingers long after the final page. The imagery is vivid, the tone is immersive, and despite its short length, the story manages to establish a compelling emotional core between Liora and Kael.

I was especially drawn to the central premise of a so-called monster king who is far more trapped than feared. The dynamic between the defiant healer and the cursed king created plenty of tension, and I found myself quickly invested in their journey. While this is a romance, it felt equally focused on sacrifice, identity, and reclaiming agency in a world determined to dictate who these characters should be.

As someone who rarely reads novellas, I found The Bone Altar Bride to be a bit of a unique reading experience. At under 150 pages, there simply isn’t the space for the same level of worldbuilding, character development, and backstory that I typically expect from romantasy, and I found myself constantly wanting more.

I especially wanted additional context surrounding Liora’s role as a healer and her history with the village. There were several moments that hinted at a deeper relationship between Liora and her community, and I would have loved to spend more time exploring why healers are held in such regard and what experiences shaped the way others viewed her. That said, I also recognize that some of those details likely had to be sacrificed to fit the novella format.

One of my biggest takeaways is that I genuinely wish this story had been longer. I enjoyed both Liora and Kael and found myself wanting more time with them, which is ultimately a compliment. The epilogue was actually one of my favorite parts because it allowed us to see how they interacted after the major events of the story. Those glimpses of their relationship made me even more curious about what a full-length novel centered on them might have looked like.

For a debut, I thought this was a strong start. The author strikes a nice balance between showing and telling, something that can be surprisingly difficult for newer writers. The gothic atmosphere was engaging, the pacing moved quickly, and the central romance was easy to root for.

Romance readers should know that the spice is fairly minimal. The relationship leans more toward yearning and emotional connection, with an almost insta-love dynamic emotionally, while the physical side develops at a slower pace.

Overall, while I wanted more depth and background than the novella format could provide, I enjoyed my time with the story and am interested to see where the author goes next. If this is the foundation of E.C. Gregory’s writing career, I’m curious to see what they accomplish with a full-length novel.

Synopsis:

Every thirteen years, beneath the Blood Moon, Alderfen offers a bride to the Unnamed King, ensuring the curse remains bound and the village survives. This year, Eliora Hale, a healer, is chosen to become his bride.

The Unnamed King, feared as a beast and a monster, isn't the creature the stories claim him to be. Instead, he is a man bound by an oath he never chose, forced to watch bride after bride perish within his cursed realm. But if Eliora is good at one thing, it's refusing to obey. Will she survive the curse? Will she meet the same fate as the brides before her? Or will she become the one destined to break the curse and finally set them all free?

Review:

"The Bone Altar Bride" by E. C. Gregory is a gothic romantasy prequel novella to The Blood Oath Cycle series, introducing a dark world filled with curses, sacrifice, and forbidden hope.

Eliora is strong, compassionate, and unwilling to bow to the expectations placed upon her, and that was easily my favourite thing about her. She refuses to accept fate without questioning it, choosing to see Kael not as the monster everyone fears, but as the man trapped beneath centuries of pain. Kael, on the other hand, is willing to sacrifice himself again and again to spare others from the curse. His quiet strength and selflessness made me admire him, and together they made a wonderful team and an even better couple.

The novella is short, intense, and fast-paced, introducing readers to an intriguing fantasy world where the stakes remain high from beginning to end. I really enjoyed the premise, the gothic atmosphere, and the world-building, which left me curious to explore more of this series.

That being said, there were a few things that didn't fully work for me. At times, the emotional connection between the characters felt a little surface-level, making it harder for me to become completely invested in their journey. Some descriptions and sentences also felt repetitive, and there were moments where the story seemed to linger in the same place instead of moving forward.

Overall, this is a promising introduction to a dark fantasy world filled with curses, open-door romance, eerie rituals, supernatural violence, and captivity themes. I'm definitely interested to see where the series goes next.

The Bone Altar Bride is a haunting, addictive triumph that completely consumed me from the very first page.

As a dark gothic fantasy, it delivers everything I crave: a suffocating, atmospheric setting, brutal tension, and a romance that is as intoxicating as it is devastating.

The story follows Liora, who is chosen as the Blood Moon Bride and sent to the Unnamed King to satisfy a century-old curse—a ritual designed to maintain a fragile peace at the cost of young women's lives.

What starts as a sacrifice, however, quickly evolves into a high-stakes battle of wills.
Liora is a remarkably strong protagonist, and watching her fight against the fate thrust upon her was deeply empowering.

Her defiance is captured perfectly in a standout moment where she declares, "They taught me obedience; I’ve been weaning off it," a sentiment that encapsulates her refusal to let fear dictate her existence.

The chemistry between Liora and Kael is electric, dangerous, and refreshingly messy. Their relationship is not soft or easy; it is filled with the kind of obsessive, painful, and addictive tension that kept me screaming internally throughout the read.

Instead of becoming bogged down in sprawling politics, the narrative grounds itself in sharp, evocative worldbuilding that centers on the visceral—the haunting presence of the altar, the weight of the chains, the decaying fortress, and the ever-present shadows.

This creates a concentrated experience that is easy to devour in a single sitting while still leaving a lasting impact.

While there is plenty of darkness, complexity, and grief woven into the story, it is ultimately a tale about agency, hope, and the strength to challenge the status quo.

It is important to note that this is a novella and serves as a powerful, contained opening to a larger series. It successfully cracks the door open on a bigger world without feeling like an incomplete fragment.

If you enjoy dark romantic fantasy with gothic vibes, morally grey characters, and a narrative that will trap you in its world, this is a must-read that I will be thinking about for a very long time.
