This one was surprisingly decent in many ways and astonishingly outrageous in others. The spoiler list:

-
...he was more a grown man than a teenager.
Ah yes, the perfect boyfriend for her 16-year-old daughter

- Caleb shoots up the high school to try to get at Kyle, who's trying to get at Scarlet, who wasn't at the school. Maria (in a brief moment of friend loyalty) tells Kyle that Scarlet is with Vivian, but she isn't.

- Kyle also thinks Maria looks like Jennifer Lopez, at least according to the narration while in his perspective. Why "she looked like a young Jennifer Lopez" was the only way Rice chose to describe her was, well, a Choice™

- Kyle is truly iconic.
He stood, smiled wide, and said: "Welcome to the club."
I wanna join his club. He wants to literally eat the rich and I'm here for it. He also turns Vivian into a vampire, so we'll see how that goes. If they have some kind of weird romance, let it be said that he's like 35 and she's 16

- Caleb is on the run from the law because he shot up the school, so he steals a military plane to flee the police. Pretty sure he just ruined his entire career and life, but oh well

- For the first time in this entire series, we get evil priests. I'm not anti-organized religion but it was very strange to have every member of the Catholic church be a paragon of righteousness all throughout its history, so I guess this is a step in the right direction. This is ironic because Fated is the penultimate book in the series

- The evil priests seem to think that Spanish is Latin, or at least Rice does, because the priests "chant in Latin" and then the following text is literally just Spanish. Kinda reminds me of how the mystical fantasy language in Caraval is also literally just Spanish

- Vivian almost dies but Scarlet saves her, revealing her vampire powers to everyone. This was actually a pretty good character moment for Scarlet, who previously murdered some creepy guys in an equally good scene that made her seem like a bad person. Apparently, you can be as unhinged and psychotic as you want, as long as your victims are also bad people. Unless those bad people are Vivian.

...she knew that no one deserved to be dead—not even Vivian. As evil and cruel as Vivian was, Scarlett just could not let her die.

"Please don’t hurt me," he whimpered, crying. "I didn’t mean it. I don’t know what you are, but I didn’t mean it."

"I’m sure you didn’t," she answered, her voice dark, inhuman. "Just like I don’t mean what I’m about to do to you."
It's all very inconsistent

- Scarlet's name was occasionally spelled "Scarlett" (evidence of this is in the above quote)

- We learn that Scarlet has red hair. I feel that I should have known this, but this information is new to me. Her name is rather on the nose

- Besides the character moments, there were some other surprisingly decently written scenes here and there

- Caitlin breaks into the protected catalog of a library and stays the night to read all the books. She's lived my dream

-While in the library, she physically harasses a librarian and also acquires his contact information so that she can send spam messages to further harass him

- She discovers that there might be a secret society of vampires living underneath the Sphynx and that the clues to locating the entrance are in the Voynich manuscript. Dan Brown could never

- Proof of the above being in the book:

Caitlin suddenly felt certain that a lost vampire city did exist, that it was beneath the Sphinx, and that the key to discovering the entry would be found in the Voynich manuscript.

Caitlin sat up, realizing it made perfect sense.
No, Caitlin, it doesn't make any sense whatsoever, but whatever you say

- Blake SA's Scarlet at a party but honestly, it was in character because he's a simp and a douchebag

- Lore says that he has a cousin named Lore. I'm pretty sure he meant to say "Sage" but who knows what's true at this point?

- It was somewhat unclear, but I think Lore killed Maria so RIP Maria I guess

- Honestly, this was pretty decent, and unironically my favorite installment, if it weren't for the Voynich manuscript and the entirety of Sage's and Scarlet's "romance". Following the adult Caitlin and Caleb as they do adult stuff was pretty legit. From my experience with the Of Crowns and Glory series by Rice, it seems that she does a significantly better job characterizing adults, so why she seems to only write YA confuses me

- We learn Kyle's last name (we still don't know Caleb's) and oh boy.

Kyle Vicious
"My last name," Kyle said. "You probably think it's fake, right? It's not. Can you believe it? I was aptly named: I was born to kill."
Please let me join your club Kyle

OMG....Caitlin, Caleb, Scarlet...

I don't want to give away too much about this book but the contents, I couldn't put down. So well written and just amazing.

So the last book, #10 Craved, had an exceptional ending with Caitlin giving up vampirism to better the world. She would have done anything for Caleb and her love for him is so unbelievably strong. The world is a better place now that there has been a balance for immortal creatures – they don’t exist anymore…Now FATED….WOW! Caitlin now has to figure out why Scarlet is acting so weird as she’s approaching her 16th birthday. Well, she is turning into the “last/first” vampire coming BACK into existence.

Fated takes you on a whirlwind of emotions, especially if you have been a true reader of The Vampire Journals series, and there are some things that made me want to hurl my ereader and other things that I just wanted to jump in and help Caleb and Caitlin. Polly and Sam don’t have a very big role in this book – but glad to see they were included in this one. Aiden has a small but very important role.

Thumbs up and look forward to #12……

I didn't like the teen drama happening in middle of all this. Why are they even going to school. Kyle maybe important next book idk. The father arc is also over exaggerated.

Loved it

I loved the whole series of books especially the 1 thru 8 which I would gave 5 stars. I was in awe how she intertwined travel ing thru time with historical events that made perfect sense some a little bit over the top but when you read the whole series makes sense. the proof reader needs to improve the errors but other than that, I can't wait for book 12.... This is the 11th book of the Vampire Journals series by Rice. Like the other 10 books, this one deals with teen drama, has editing errors and should have been compiled, along with the others, into two books. One book dealing Caitlin and Caleb's adventures and the second dealing with Scarlet.

In this book everyone is looking for Scarlet, who is looking for Sage, who is looking to escape his family. Scarlet has taken off (put intended) and no one can find her. She is escaping from her family who she thinks wants to kill her and her friends who hate her with the passion of teen hatred. Scarlet realizes she wants to find Sage and spend what little time he has left with him. Sage you see is dying along with his family after living a short time of only 2,000 years. An immortalist taken so young.....

Two others are after Scarlett. Kyle, who she has added to the vampire ranks in the last book and Lore who is Sage's cousin. The both leave a trail of death and destruction in their hunt for Scarlet.

The book ends with everyone racing to some island where Sage is being held captive by his family. The final book should be interesting.

Good, but needs editing

It's trule a decent book. But it almost feels like it could have been a new spin-off series from the first set of books. I had a hard time getting into the last few, and the lack of editing still baffles me.

Not real sure when I finished but it's been awhile.

As all the vampire journals this one did not deny the mind of the surprises, it was fantastic Ì personally recommend this series.
Happy reading

Book 11 of the Vampire Journals series.

Starts right after Scarlet has fled into night after the fight at the bar. She has just become a vampire, the last of her kind, until she bites someone.

*Spoilers*

This the only story I have come across where a person becomes a vampire after one bite. Being as they have to bite to drink blood, that would make A LOT of people vampires and not very practical.

Her parents, the police, Sage, Kyle and Lore, just about everyone, are all searching for her. She’s not really trying to hide, so can’t understand how at least Sage and Lore couldn’t find her.

This is definitely a light teen high school story. The characters are very childish. Her friends are jerks, especially Vivian. Maria is very gullible and this ‘like’ business is annoying. Do they really still say that? If so, stop it. It just makes you seem uneducated. Even the police are incompetent and aren’t very organized. Maybe I’ve just been reading too many adult vampire stories sand have lost patience for the lighter stuff. But then the ‘Real vampires’ series was light hearted and I like that one.

The only real bad guys are Kyle who is very smart, just mean. And Lore whose sole goal is jealousy of Sage, not really his family. Seems like he’d be happy to be the only one left immortal. Even the Vatican priests were killed way too easily.

I hate stories that end without some kind of scene/event ending, just an infuriating cliff hanger. And there’s no hint as to when the next one will be written. It sounds like it may be interesting with the Sphinx connection. But it also sounds exactly like the earlier books storyline, only this time Caitlyn is searching for a key to help save Scarlet, instead of looking for her father.

Quick thoughts: 1)Why couldn’t Scarlet open her wings on the island.

2)Where were the ‘Immortals’ in the previous books? If they’re been around 2000 years, they should have popped up somewhere in Cailyn’s travels.

Fave scene: Caitlyn researching at the libraries and the Voynich manuscript.

I have just finished reading every book in this series and whilst as a concept the plot is good the execution of the overall story is very flawed.
For instances:
Spelling mistakes in every book,
Referring to a character by the wrong name,
Superfluous words in sentences,
Plot holes everywhere.

I do not wish to state much more in terms of the overall story arc in this series as I do not want to give spoilers; but it is true that the plot tends to follow a deliberate pattern so there are certain events that happen in each book. That may be the general idea by the author as these books are meant to be suitable for teenagers but in my opinion the author wrote herself into a corner and had to find a way to hit the reset button to continue the series.

A good proof reader would be a huge boon to these books and make them easier for readers who rely on Braille or who are learning English as a second language.

after reading all books i question why in the start of the books there is a quote rivals vampire diaries and twilight well i have never read or watched twilight but i love vampire diaries... and this is nothing compared to that my advise for the author is be more imaginative i could tell what was going to happen ie who Caitlins father was and also needs to get a better editor to review books errors are beyond joke
