This was entertaining! I never rate novellas too high because obviously there's not much content to go off of, but this was pretty good! It was so unique with the corporations and the culture of the vampires living amongst humans. I was super intrigued to learn more about the world building regarding the jobs of the characters and everything else. It was explained so well, I felt so knowledgeable about these fictional jobs having to do with vampires! That being said, I was really in the mood to be scared, that's why I picked up this book, but I really wasn't, though I don't think it was made to be super scary in that way, so that was just my expectations. Another thing I have to say is the ending was a little hard to comprehend in my opinion as far as the action and describing what was happening, but by the end of the scene I could put together what had happened pretty well. Overall, this was a refreshing short read and it was so cool to read about this new and unique take on vampirism!!

I loved the concept of approaching vampirism through a scientific and ecological lens. Treating these creatures as hibernating urban predators affected by fungal infections (Candida vampiris) is such a cool setup, and the bleak Balkan setting gives it a solid, gritty atmosphere. The tension during the field testing and sample collection scenes kept things engaging and fast-paced.
However, the short novella format really holds it back. You're thrown in headfirst with a rapid-fire parade of characters, making it hard to track who is who or care about their fates when the action spikes. Between the rushed character introductions and a few disjointed dialogue transitions, the narrative needed more breathing room to fully land its impact. It reads like a great concept constrained by its length. Given a full-length novel treatment to flesh out the cast and institutional lore, this could have been exceptional.

I saw the synopsis and immediately requested this one because it sounded like something just up my alley - vampires being treated like predators and not just monsters? sign me up!
I do think this being a novella was its downfall. It would’ve worked much better as a longer book so we had enough time to get the plot and the characters. A bunch of characters were introduced at once and I had no time to figure out who is who. We don’t spend enough time with any of them for me to care about what’s going on. I also don’t think the vampire aspect is explained enough - it felt like we’re just dropped in the middle of the action and have to piece it together. And I don’t expect to be spoon-fed, but I do expect the story to be somewhat coherent.
The writing style wasn’t as smooth as I would have liked. Some of the dialogue was stilted at times and it pulled me out of the story. I had moments when I asked myself “who actually talks like that?”. The plot was well-paced for such a short story, but I still think it would’ve been better as a longer book. The idea of humans actively trying to save the vampires instead of hunting them down was a breath of fresh air - I haven’t really seen this approach anywhere else.
Overall, I think this is an intriguing read and, even though I didn’t vibe with it as much as I would’ve liked, I still think it’s worth the read just because it’s so imaginative. I wish the author would expand this universe and write more books with the same idea because it’s unique.

I really enjoyed the setting and the whole idea of entire organisations being built around the conservation and study of vampire populations and eventually the corruption within them.
I think that looking at Vampirism through a scientific lens gave this novella a really cool scope rather than the usual folklore/hidden-in-mystery and speculation type stories you see featuring vampires and it really worked for getting you invested in the plot!
While I love novellas I do think this story would have benefitted from being a novel where we could get to know the characters better and even get to delve into the worlds development more. I think then you would find the characters motivations much more understandable or organic and would work really well for what happened at the end.
As well as that, I felt I wanted to know more about the vampires themselves, especially Didi, who really felt like she was a character with hidden depth that, unfortunately, you didn't get to explore all that much.
However, I will say if you're looking for an interesting and a lesser explored idea of vampires then you would enjoy this as it is.

This was unexpectedly good, solid 4.25 stars from me. Story is amazing, especially considering how much the author managed to pack into little bit more than hundred pages. Plot is strong, well executed and supported both by scientific details and typical Balkan belifs, that makes everything sound believable. The worldbuilding is rich and atmospheric, written with amazing precision.

A quirky story that perhaps loses something in translation. The overall idea of the story is a unique take on vampires: they are a protected species being observed by the government. The book opens with the main character describing their position and a very broad overview of the government involvement, the group they are watching, and concerns about a virus that is impacting these groups. The relationships described between the narrator and the vampires is similar to that of researchers that observe a pack of wolves or other large animal over several years. Though brief, the tension between living and undead man is felt in these scenes. The story became difficult to follow when two groups of (living) people became involved with the main character around the same time. Because this story is translated, the names were not familiar and some were similar; this made it more difficult to follow as an English-speaking reader. I've never seen vampires written as urban fauna and they're being observed by an organization called Urban Predators Without Borders in which vampires and their movements are observed, but not interfered with. Think about how wildlife photographers will observe wildlife and photograph them but not interfere, even if they really want to. It's kind of like that.
This is one of the most imaginative vampire stories I have ever read, I guess my only real complaint is I wish this novella was a full length novel. Give me more of this world, Elena, I want to know!!

I really enjoyed Infection Points by Elena Pavlova. It’s a short story, but it manages to pull you in really quickly. I especially liked the way the vampires are portrayed. Instead of just being seen as monsters, they’re treated almost like an animal species, with caretakers looking after them and keeping an eye on them.
The story itself flows really. There’s a gradual build-up towards the climax, and I really liked how the tension slowly increased until everything came together. It made the ending feel much more impactful.
And then there’s Didi. Didi is so cute and was definitely one of my favourite parts of the story. I found myself wanting more interactions with her.
There was so much potential to explore the world, the vampires and their caretakers further, and I would have happily read more. Overall, Infection Points is a captivating and easy-to-read short story with a really interesting concept, a great build-up, and a very cute vampire named Didi. I just wish there had been more of it!

4.5 ⭐ - Bite sized but packing a big punch. The perfect mix of horror, violence and humour. Infection Points at its core is dark satire of conservation. Exploring the complexity of saving a species amidst clashing eco politics, academic rivalry, a spreading disease and of course the danger of having your throat ripped out by an apex predator.
“Remove the wolves from a forest and the deer will run rampant, eating all saplings and even the bark from the trees. Remove the urban predators from the cities and…“
Big fan of this take on vampires, positing them as just another animal at risk of extinction, with a role to play in the urban ecosystem. The implications are fascinating and I was impressed with how layered this was considering the short page count.

It did move a little faster than I was ready for, I wasn't paying quite enough attention to who was who since the plot really does zip along, but that's my only small quibble. I really loved the conservation politics (the MC works for Urban Predators Without Borders, and there are other vampire-centred organisations too) and the story's commentary on the balance between observing and protecting.

The story is pretty unique for a vampire story. It is a short story set around a vampire conservationist. I enjoyed the uniqueness of the story and the drive the main character has towards their passion for protecting and understanding the vampires. It is short and worth a read for those that want to add more stuff to their vampire folklore list.
In my opinion, the writing was a bit confusing at times and hard to follow. I think this was just because of the translations to English. I was still able to grasp the main story and feel the emotions it just took me a lot longer to get there than I personally would have liked.

Fascinating worldbuilding in such a short story. I’ve never seen vampires and fungi connected in such a way, and the concept of vampires as urban fauna and complex beings, not just monsters, was so interesting to read about. The short length of the story however did leave me wanting to know more of everything: the main character’s background, the organization at center, how the fungus works, the vampire communities, and what happens after the ending! I’d love to see more stories in this world!

I think the setup and the whole concept of how the vampires worked was interesting and could have lent itself to a very good, fleshed out novel. What an great short story
i read this is in just over an hour and could not put it down, this takes a step out of the shadows from your usual vampire tales, it takes us to a world where vampires are known to exist, a world where a contagion is spreading are causing a threat to there very existence , and where humans are monitoring them and protecting them as we would with an endangered species.
within such a short story the author manages so much world building, i would love to see more from this world as i feel there is so many stories to tell within it

Pavlova's prose is sharp, atmospheric, and unflinching. The blend of ecological crisis, body horror, and moral ambiguity is brilliant. This is dark speculative fiction at its finest. Intelligent, unsettling, and impossible to put down - my only complaint is that there is not more.
A must-read for fans of thoughtful horror. Highly recommend.

This was such a short story, only like 60 pages! And I was not expecting that. So I finished it in one sitting and think many readers could do the same.
This was a sort of zombie survival story. And it really reminded me of the last season of the show Search Party. It had a very similar tone, especially to that last scene in the show.
These people are definitely more used to the idea of the whole infection situation that you typically see in this kind of book or show/movie.

What a weird story. I enjoyed getting to know the characters. The world building was lacking a bit. I did visualize the apartments, but I could not visualize the chaos when in the apartment. I understood what was happening, but I just could not put myself in the story when it came to that. The character development was great. I did get the feelings coming through in the pages.
A story I would recommend to many horror and vampire readers. It's a quick story that I devoured in one day.

Story is surely short, but intense. It captivates your attention and doesn't let it go until you're done reading.
Marvelous work, truly.
The concept of vampires being an important part of ecosystem and urban socioeconomic infrastructure is quite novel one, and yet a very interesting one. The idea of cities and towns depopulating when local vampires disappear is fascinating. I have never read a similar story or anything with even remotely similar concepts.

This was a very short book but it really felt complete. The worldbuilding was very good, the storyline super original and the people and vampires! I never read a story like this. What a unique way to represent vampires, I loved it, this needs to be a full length novel asap, because that ending wasn’t an ending at all. I was pleasantly surprise, so highly, highly recommend if you love horror and vampirism. This reminded me of the first REC movie.

Overall, the concept is very interesting. I like a scientific approach to a paranormal story. However, the characters and writing just didn't click for me. The characters seems a bit stilted and the writing just didn't have the right flow. It's a quick read though and worth a read for a new perspective on a vampire story.

I quite enjoyed reading this book. Thanks to netgalley and publishers for the arc. This is very vampire driven and honestly, it felt very movie like for a short story. I wanted more. Thank you again!

Pretty interesting take on vampires, loved the scientific approach, however I wish it was longer and in my opinion, the ending felt a bit jumbled and confusing. I love the way the vampires were written though!

As the book's editor I am obviously biased, but this is such a uniquely imagined vampire story and lots of fun to boot.
