True courage is fighting for those who can't fight for themselves. No matter the consequences.
Eighteen-year-old Evan Nash doesn't look like a hero. Nor does he feel like one. He's not trying to be anything. He's just a kid with a deeply-rooted sense of right and wrong. One so strong that even a life-threatening condition cannot derail Evan's determination to save as many as he can...Even if it kills him.
Michael C. Grumley is the author of the best-selling BREAKTHROUGH series with over two million books sold. He lives in Northern California with his two young daughters. He’s an avid reader, runner and most of all father, and dotes on his girls every chance he gets. He loves hearing from readers while he works on the next ROLLBACK book.
Love this author that I literally stumbled upon. Every books well thought out with an entertaining mix of reality and fiction.
I absolutely can't wait to read more from Michael Grumley. Each book is very current as far as events and politics but adds in enough fiction to keep the reader totally engrossed and wanting more.
This book, along with, Through the Fog, make a powerful statement. In, Through the Fog, we meet a young man who is recovering from a concussion from an accident caused by bullies. This concussion left him with a very unique and fascinating . . . condition. He sees this as a way to help people!
Jumping forward to this book, we see the same young man insisting he is going to help people using his . . . curse . . . abilities . . . no one knew where to classify it. Everyone who knew about it, also knew it must be kept a secret. They were trying to keep him virtually a recluse so his ability -- as good a word as any other -- could not be exploited. The events could not be stopped and happened everyday, however, the worst part of this? Every time it happened could be the last time, he may not come back because of the huge stresses it puts on his body. Well, despite this major detail and the desires of those few who know about it, he has other ideas!
A beautifully written novel about many things and many differing perceptions. It could be a story of miracles, and it is. It could be a story of courage, bravery and selflessness, and it is! It's a story of all those and so much more! The perfect sequel!

It's a story of all those and so much more -- a story about so many things that can still be condensed down to: a young man wanting to do his part and make a difference. You will have to find out for yourself how this young man fights the odds against him. It is definitely worth the journey! What did I expect? To tell the truth, I didn't have many expectations. What I discovered was a morality tale buried in the book. I think there were two unexpected heroes--plus other heroes and heroines. I'm glad the author didn't overdo the blood and gore as so many authors do. The young man hero would sacrifice all at duty's call. He becomes a role model for the older man. I hope they join forces again. I will enjoy that.
I really enjoyed reading both The Unexpected Hero and Through The Fog. They are something different than all the books out there and most definetely something diffrent for me. I stumbled on the first book in Kindle Unlimited and was very happy I read it. Can't wait the next episode in Evan's journey!
I am a romance junkie. Saw through the fog on my kindle and gave it a try. finished it in 3 hours and could not wait to start The unexpected hero. Please finish the next installment of Evans story.
The beginning of the book is an expanded version of the end of the first book. But it felt as if it were written by someone else. Once I got into the story, I recognized the authors style, but I'm puzzled as to why the beginning had such a different feel to it.
This book answered most of my questions, except the why. Why did both Evan and Dan suffer this condition? There was no explaining that.
I was confused by the Glendale/Bakersfield back and forth until it became apparent much later in the book. One thing though that was wrong, they said the first man who was arrested was a local, yet a bit later they said he lived in LA. LA was 90 minute drive from Bakersfield, so how could he be a local?
They kept referring to Ellie as if she was a very small child, but she was 7 when when she was first abducted, and she was missing for 18 months so that would make her between 8 1/2 and 9. Although not grown, she certainly wasnt small child.
Except for these inconsistencies, it was a pretty good story if you dont look too deeply in it.
Michael Grumley is probably one of the most engaging self-published authors I've ever read. To me, his characters are well developed and his plotlines are well thought out. He infuses elements of realism many authors leave out, and I sincerely appreciate the fact that Grumley's work is almost totally free of foul language and contains NO sexual innuendo. In the novels I read these days, those are elements that some authors can't seem to avoid putting into their books, and if I find too much of it in the opening couple of chapters, I simply return the book and give it a lousy review. I have read almost all of Grumley's books and I sincerely appreciate his style of writing, which is very rich and in extremely good taste. Thank you, Michael, for producing such great reading material. I love the characters and situations you craft, and I look forward to reading more of your work.
I've read both books now and I honestly could not put them down. There really is so much us peons, as it were, don't know about this corrupt government, it boggles the mind for sure. Well written with a few typos (that drives me to distraction), these two books were fascinating. I could not put them down until I finished both, they were that good. I don't have insightful prose to elicit how truly great this author is. A great story with all kinds of action, suspense, intrigue, and such foul language you have to skip arts to get through it. That's an insightful writer who can tell a great story without the filth. Thank you for that. If you want to read good quality books written so you could read it out loud and not be embarrassed, follow this great author!
I have spent the last week reading all of Grumley’s books. I had previously read Breakthrough. When I started it for the second time, I remembered immediately how much I had enjoyed it and looked him up on Amazon. I was very happy to see the rest of the Breakthrough series and read them all. Unbelievably they featured my favorite animals -dolphins and gorillas. (I had been following Koko since the early seventies and this whole series was like going home for me). Real page turners, great characters. I couldn’t put them down. Then I read his other series. I fell in love with Evan and all those characters as well. They are all real thrillers and I couldn’t put them down. Please, Michael, write faster!
Evan Chase has a wonderful but deadly ability. He can see people who have been kidnapped but his ability leaves him weakened and near death. He uses his ability to find kids who have been taken for nefarious purposes. This book was so well written and kept you turning pages as fast as you could read. I wish it hadn't ended as it did or maybe another book would be written about Dan Taylor. This author is extremely gifted and I would highly recommend you read his works. I can't wait for his next book!
This second installment of "Evan" stories is fantastic. The first book is, "Through The Fog," also fantastic. Evan is a teen with an uncanny ability to "see" what is happening elsewhere. He uses this gift (or curse?) to search for abducted children. There is much, much more to the plot, but that is for you to fund out! Extraordinary book, characters, details, different locations, and really fast paced. I have (now) read all of Grumley's books. I'm looking forward to his next wonderful story! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Z2QIT8M?...
The Unexpected Hero (Evan, #2), my second read from author Michael C. Grumley. The book seamlessly from the first book. Slightly longer at 186 pages than Through the Fog (Evan, #) 169 pages but seems shorter since the author did such an outstanding laying out the characters in the first book. After reading these 2 books I look forward to reading more from this author. Will there be an Evan #3? I certainly hope so! "I received a free Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
I'm a big fan of Mr. Grumley's Breakthrough series. I've liked his other books, but not as much. The premise of the Evan series is interesting. There's a lot of suspense and action in the two books. There is some nice blending of plotlines. The character development is very limited. My biggest problems with the two books are that A: way too much stuff is forced into short books; and B: effectively one full book has been split into two smaller pieces. Still, I found the premise and the characters to be interesting. Obviously, there won't be a third book after all this time. Too bad.
Read all of Mr Grumley's works, they're worth the time
I started with Breakthrough. Read all three without a break. Began these next two wondering if the same quality of style, character development and believability would continue. Grumley did not disappoint. I enjoyed every minute being in his world... Even when some good guys didn't make it. But isn't that how the world really works?
I first became aware of M C Grumley, through reading his book: Through the Fog. He has created in his books a new type of hero. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys suspense, thrillers, or those who just want a few more good guys in the game.
I first became aware of M. C. Grumley, when I came across his book: Into the Fog I highly recommend both of these books to anyone interested in thrillers, suspense, or just looking for a new kind of hero.
The main character in this novel and it's proceeding one is very fascinating in that he can see remotely. For years, the Russians and Americans tried very hard to use this talent against each other. And this book set up an entirely new perspective where it is used for the well being of kidnapped children and their being returned to their families. I think this is wonderful!
I loved this book! Book two, it is the continuing and remarkable story of Evan, a young man with a remarkable and possibly deadly gift.
Plot development, character design and really good story telling. Grumley is a gifted story teller and I would compare him favorably with Vikki Kestell's and her Stealth series. Please read this book! You won't regret it and the characters stay with you as people who desperately want to do the right thing.
This is a short one but filled with the usual adventure, caring people who want to make a difference, stressed families, villains who abduct young folks and weird governmental tales of CIA initiatives and psychological experiments on people. The author has a great series going with Echoes, and Ripple and talking dolphins and buried alien artifacts. I found this one to be not quite as complex a tale, but enjoyable for a quick read, The other series is great!
Good read. I read In the Fog Micheal Grumley now this one . I really enjoyed both. I like this writer because he keeps the story moving along without all the puff. I hate when writer's have a good story line then fill the book with useless fluff till you get bored . You don't have to worry about that with this writer. I will be looking for more books by Mr. Grumley.
Honestly I'm not big on writing reviews. I'm a bit of an unusual thinker with twists in my imagination. The ability to be "in" a book as I read is one of my greatest joys. Your books looked 'hope it's good' and opened into a writing style that were wonderfully beautiful Geostones. I was immersed in the characters and plot lines from the first book. Keep writing and those of us that can truly feel stories will keep reading!
OK, so I devoured the second book in the series. I absolutely loved the LEAP series he wrote, and I am just as addicted to this new series I just started. This new group of people and what they do for mankind is truly giving. Mr. Grumley has gone and left me hanging again so I have to get the third book! You will enjoy the series, guaranteed.
If you haven't read any of Mr. Grumley's books, you are missing out on a treat. He takes readers on grand adventures that are spellbinding. When I first realized that he was a self published author, I went back and purchased all of his books. I'm also on the waiting list for his newest release. If you haven't read this man you are doing yourself a serious disservice.
After recovering from his concussion, Evan starts having visions… that’s how he helped locate a little girl who had been kidnapped. Now his visions are so frequent they are killing him little by little. Shannon and Dennis, the parents of the little girl he saved help Evan find answers to his agony and try helping him figure out how to manager his visions. Evan decided he wants to help other families find their kidnapped kids, even if it kills him.
Through the fog and The unexpected hero was fantastic I have read alot by Michael C. Grumley and I can tell you this I have been fascinated by his books so well written and holds you so much you can't put them down I read Through the fog and then started and finished The unexpected hero the next day. Now I need a 3rd book please you can't leave me hanging with the spook that just found out that Dan is alive!
I read both books of this series and at first thought I had found a great new author and would read more of his books. The story was good and inspiring..... But its filled with a lot of profanity which takes away from the story......and when you began using my Lord's holy name in your profanity .........well I just refuse to read any more....totally unnecessary and offensive
I don't know how authors come up with ideas but this story is full of unusual characters and situations. This person Evan, has a gift that is wonderful until the government wants to mess with it. What gives govrnmt employees the idea that they have a right to mess with someone. Who knows, this could be based on a true situation but its covered up for a reason. Really cool story.
