“This city brings out the worst in people. Batman says it’s not in the water…but in the soil. That a city founded on corruption shows more corruption…the people just adapt. Bad seed after bad seed – – the past chokes out the good. My past is dark. This seed was bad. Now every night I fight through that darkness…every night I reach for the light.”

The main batman series needs to take notes, that’s how you gracefully tie in an event to future proof your series it in case people only want to read batgirl and need the context of the event, while providing an interesting story about what it means to be a hero and the desperation in human nature during adversity. The very introduction to this book completely reframes what “bad seeds” even means to tailor to this book, this creative team understood the assignment and I love it! The issue starts right before everything kicks off, batgirl is back in Gotham with her group and it’s Tenji’s first time. So of course they have to bit up Ba Bao’s for some great food and safe eating in the back. But our front we are introduced to a desperate boy who looks to the TV where an ad from Savage plays, with Vandal literally sitting in a chair from Villains Homegood Inc, where he informs the city of a high bounty on the bats head. Someone’s life could drastically improve with that kind of money. Last we saw this restaurant we didn’t get much of a chance to eat with a fight breaking out in the kitchen against the Unburied. But the last place Tenji wants to be is cooped up, he wants to get out there, stop a bank robbery, make the front page of the newspaper, and become a big time hero. While I love the idea of helping people, being trapped on a ranch all his life has shifted his perception of how things are. Vandal has outlawed vigilantes and any newspaper not dying is owned by a villain. But Jaya also reminds him that heroism is not a title gained under a spotlight or in the ring (cough booster gold cough), instead it happens in the dark and takes sacrifice even if you only save one person.

But then the desperate kid from the front walks into the kitchen while looking for the bathroom, stunned that he actually just ran into a member of the bat family as the ideas rip through his head. Then everything kicks off, it feels like an earthquake but then a tree breaks from the ground in the dining room as it sprouts glowing flowers. Batgirl bolts outside to help more people, only to find the issue a lot bigger than she thought. The streets are filled with large roots springing up everywhere. I love this perspective from the ground, looking up and seeing something much bigger than you could ever handle…but Cass stands tall as she realizes she is getting a pre-recorded message from batman. This is the message sent out in the sunset special as he tells them to fight like hell. Comms are down as batman mentioned working on a solution, and now Cass is left without orders or a mission. It’s daunting and frustrating, so she makes dimwit that she has. They help the customers and lock themselves in the restaurant as they watch the plane monsters forming outside in the green mist. Under the stress, one couple breaks out into an argument about this happening in Chinatown of all places. They were supposed to be in Gotham heights but their could afford it, the man then making a comment about affording it if they turned over batgirl. Jaya does not appreciate this comment and puts a sword to the man’s neck to confirm he is joking. Then announcing alongside Tenji that no one gets batgirl or they go through them. The young boy can’t keep his eyes off her.

Then comes a banging at the door as an unhoused man outside begs for help, the pleas for help then into terror as a plant comes for him. Cass runs towards the door and swings it open as she finds the man wrapped with thorny vines as he is dragged back towards a much larger plant ready to devour him. Cass tries to use batarangs, but it’s not strong enough so she pulls out the sword and slices the man free. Using a few flaming explosive batarangs to go right into the plant’s mouth to finish it off and provide them cover to get inside. Some of the other people freak out about bringing the man in, claiming he could be sick. But nothing is going to stop Jaya from delivering medical attention, even if she is severely limited in what she can do. The others make mention of calling the TUCOs, and as Cass tries to explain she is only trying to help…the desperate boy takes a knife and runs it into her side. As he pulls it out he explains his mom is dying and they can’t afford treatment. The only option he sees is killing her to save his mom. Cass swats the knife away and then hugs the boy, Cass above anyone else understands where the boy is coming from but she can also see his mother did not raise him a killer. Honestly this moment made me tear up a bit.

But then we have more trouble, as the couple’s young daughter decided to smell one of the new glowing flowers when she was left unattended…now she is poisoned. Jaya doesn’t have what she needs as the girl needs to go to a hospital in the next 30 minutes. Cass offers to take her, Tenji tries to stop her as she is bleeding out but Cass is the only one who knows this city and can get her to Gotham general (spin-off! LOL) the fastest. Jaya asks for the parent’s permission, and they give it. Jaya then bandages up Cass and straps Mimi to her back. Cass now has a mission, a time limit, and a list of supplies to bring back to help their other wounded friend. The last thing Cass does is tell Tenji he can do this, and reminds them all that even in the dark…reach for the light. I fully believe if anyone can pull this off, it’s Batgirl.

This was a tie in issue to the Bad Seeds event. The first half didn't excite me much but by the end I was excited to see what happens with Cassie and this little girl that needs help.

Glad that they’re starting a new arc because I felt like the old one was getting a little stale at the end
