FUN START! kinda has the overall atmosphere of tom taylor's nightwing which i am all for! excited to see where it goes and how jason interacts with everyone.

Teen Titans #1 didn’t hook me right away. The meta stuff up front wasn’t really for me, but once it moved past that and settled into the actual story, the premise became much more interesting. There’s enough potential in Red Hood leading this new team that I’m curious to see where it goes. This was only a 3⭐️ for me, but I’d read another issue, it definitely shows promise.

So this is everything I could possibly have wanted as both a youth services librarian and a Red Hood fan. So much fun. Doesn’t read like it’s trying to understand kids using dated references. We don’t get much time to get to know the characters, especially one of the new characters Proxy, but we got a lot of Wildcard’s personality here and I’m finding him very fun (unrelated but I am dying to know if the similarities to Christopher Chaos were intentional or purely coincidental). PJ (Jeffrey, as he’s always called here) is also really working for me. As for Jason, this is much more in line with what I think he should be doing than anything they’ve had him doing in a while. He’s always cared about society’s most vulnerable, and who is more vulnerable than kids on the internet these days? He comes off cool and edgy without verging too far into villainous behavior (which I think is a line writers often struggle with when writing this character). His banter with the kids mostly worked as well (especially the exchange with Lian). I think the weakest point of this issue was actually Nightwing. While he’s got a lot on his plate right now and his relationship with Jason hasn’t been stellar in a while, he’s not usually one to be so harsh and unforgiving with people he cares about. Then again, he was giving Stephanie Brown similar attitude in the last New Titans issue, so it’s not unprecedented lately.

Editing to mention how perfect Di Nicuolo’s art style is for this project. After reading Children of the Round Table, he was actually my dream artist for this title before it was announced. He’s absolutely delivered as expected. The art is dynamic and expressive in a way that I think will definitely appeal to kids. I think the character designs are memorable. Some of action is really interestingly done, and I especially liked the sequence of panels where we see behind and in front of Fairplay’s glasses.

my brain is like a mush, i'm in no state of writing a review now, i just wanted to rate and mark it as finished
i'll write a note later probably. for now i all can say is: i was really excited when i found out about it and i will continue reading when i get my hands (eyes? since i don't own them physically) on the next issues. it was just the beginning so there isn't really much to say about it. i was too impatient to read some other comics to help me understand the characters a little bit better (Red Hood, Arsenal, Mr. Terrific, etc) so i just read this one first and was confused a little. also i was a bit tired from reading But Not Too Bold but i needed something to cleanse my palate so i read this one. the art was good, i hope the story would be good too. i don't think i like the original teen titans that much, maybe because my first exposure to them was that parody series which i liked as a kid i guess? but not now, i'm not that excited about Teen Titans/Titans (maybe that's partially why i paused the Tom Taylor's run of Nightwing for now at Vol. 5) though i am curious and want to read about them. when i found out we have a new generation who are totally different with not that vibe and they're lead by Red Hood? BAM. also Jason here gave the vibe of Bruce in his early years of being detective and navigating his way and stuff like that (maybe kind of the Batinson's vibe?). cool. i won't lie, it was hard trying to adapt to these new kids whom i didn't really know but i think i'd get there after i get more materials to figure about them and their stories. i like found families and i am hopeful about this one. that was my rant.

I’m stoked to collect this series while still hunting for the Lobdel/Soy run. This felt like some fresh air for Red Hood and the Titans.

Love the art, the variants have been poppin. I’m excited to see how Proxy’s and Wildcard’s powers develop through the run.

I’m conflicted that the inciting incident of Jason accepting to be the kids’ leader was Dick kinda being a dick. He felt a smidge out of character with that text to Jason. Jason is in character to commit and take the “Teen Titans” name out of spite. It is cool to see the kids choose Jason rather than be forcibly a team.

Well, this is certainly a clean break from recent Titans books, and I think in order to embrace the teen part that made the original Wolfman/Perez era so successful they need younger characters meaning a whole new cast. Geoff Johns had similar success when he used impulse, Superboy etc but even they've grown up or disappeared now.

So we have fresh new teen characters and the other impressive factor is that Higgins appears to be writing this for a younger audience or at least has a good handle on how teens talk and interact. If this isn't how teens talk then he has at least avoided using dialogue that sounds straight from an adult/older generation of teens.

The art is also fresh with some very impressive character designs that make the new characters instantly recognisable. There's an anime influence that the book calls out when mentioning Naruto. The colours are also vibrant.

This is a very slick intro to this new series. I just hope old school Titans fans aren't too angry with the changes and that there's a genuine younger audience to embrace this book.

It's probably the most inventive of the recent "next level" books but I suspect it's the one that will have the hardest time finding an audience. For me, I think DC may almost be too successful as I really don't have the capacity to follow this many books. Some tough decisions to make but I urge everyone to try what feels like a modern approach to teen superheroics.

Wait for the trade collection? this worked well as a single issue even though the main "missing person" story is ongoing.

Did I need to read previous issues/series? no, I think most of the characters are new or essentially unused, so you don't need any previous knowledge. It may even be better if you don't.

I have high hopes for this run. This left me both excited and confused and for a first issue I think that's great.

This was great and i like having both legacy characters and new ones. Red hood messing with nightwing was both funny and kinda felt bad for nightwing he was so ready to train this new patch of heroes only to be sidelined
This also could have been titled red hood and the misfits or something really contradicts the point the kids made.

Such a class act start! In the most recent Taylor detective comics arc a young character was introduced with powers, and while the situation was resolved I couldn’t help but think about the young heroes of the DCU who are constantly left behind. These are fan favorite characters that people grasp at the chance to see played out, and finally the teen titans are back to fill that gap!! And while the creative choice to add in two new characters is a bit odd with the gallery of characters to choose from not included, this issue proves how well they add to the team dynamic from a personality and power perspective. But speaking of the art team, thank you so much for giving Jason his swagger back and from this issue alone the bar is being raised for Jason Todd representation. It’s been rough out there for a character I see so beloved. Now I do need to make myself clear, I am of the mind that Jason should not kill. Distant from others and rough, absolutely, but actually shooting someone down is something I believe he has grown for or at least should. And I believe this issue strikes that balance perfectly, he may use guns but he has yet to really USE them, and I love to see that alongside my excitement for the mentor dynamic Jason will be able to provide to these young heroes with amazing fits. Especially FairPlay and his constant calculation stare, I love it. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the ARG working alongside this in the real DC Discord, the choice to have these young heroes connect and build their own teen titans starting from a discord server is the modern twist we absolutely need thrown around. I love all the risks DC is taking by embracing creative teams as it continues to pay off in spectacular ways.

We jump into this issue with the sight of Big Belly Burger, as how else would this start. We find two very concerned parents who aren’t sure about who they are meeting is even real, as it seems that Red Hood is running his own A-Team racket to pay the bills. People need help, they talk to other people he’s helped, word spreads and the people who truly need help get to talk to him. Cash only just like the A-Team, lol. These parents can’t go to anyone else as the cops have dismissed them after they tried to report their son, Cole as missing even though the police believe he ran away. But he left everything he worked for behind, and they saw references to a server their son became fixated on where he was planning on meeting some other kids in real life. It had something to do with kids with powers. As Jason collects more info, we jump over from Issaquah to Seattle, WA where we find our group of young heroes playing in an arcade. Everything started on the discord server and now they are meeting up in real life, at the moment one of the new guys, Wildcard, is using his chaos manipulation to cheat in a video game, lol. Alongside him is Cheshire Cat, a Eugene Choi who is no longer able to channel the powers of Shazam and is trying to work through it, FairPlay, and the other newbie Proxy with telekinesis. There is a great moment here where FairPlay points out a member in their discord is posting footage of the old teen titans right from Wolfman/Perez’s NTT run. What I love is that you can go in the DC Discord right now and find the username and picture in higher quality, with people finding this user and guessing it is Dick checking in on them in disguise, lol. PSA, you do need to be server level 5 to see it. Just chat for a bit and you get it in not time, it’s not that hard.

So what does the rest of the night have in store? FairPlay has put together a few options, either illegal e-bike races, an illegal crypto mining operation siphoning power from apartment buildings, or a patter of missing dogs leading to an underground dog fighting ring. They agree on the third as they would love to wreck those guys, but Wildcard can’t help but express how minimal all these options are in the grand scheme and how he would prefer to do something EPIC. But the others see helping people as epic on itself, what Wildcard wants is danger…and without using his powers it smashes through the door. Two guys hold up the place with hammers and a horse and frog mask as they smash the display cases up front to get to the trading cards. BWAHAHA. Our heroes get ready as Cheshire slides down her mask and Proxy slides black paint across his eyes to create a mask. Does he just have a pocket filled with ash, what’s up there? lol. What immediately surprises me is Proxy’s powers in use, as I assumed it would be throwing objects around. Instead it’s more like very versatile bursts of power, which he uses in very creative ways. Lian is of course able to take the other one down, and wildcard’s abilities make sure they stay that way. Eugene grabs one of their hammers to get in on it as wildcard holds him back. But as our robbers get back up and yells about metas ruining everything, Eugene runs forward with the hammer and rips into them for being losers robbing an arcade and his no one needs powers to deal with them and he can prove it right here. Great job Eugene, the robbers decide not to take the chance and make a run for it.

This leads them right into the rooftop chase Lian was hoping for earlier. FairPlay sends his mother boxes ahead as they chase after them, Eugene trying his best to keep up. But then they get to a gap in the rooftops and as Eugene jumps FairPlay can see he isn’t going to make it. He uses one of their boxes to call proxy back to use his powers to slow Eugene down safely to the ground. It’s clearly a struggle for Proxy as the closer he is the better but he is able to get Eugene down. As the teens had to double back the robbers believe they are home free, only for the frog to get a face full of Jason’s foot. The titans are shocked to see red hood here of all places, but he ruins the vibe quickly by asking if their parents know they are here. Then he berates them for trashing the arcade while he stopped the robbers, Jason is going to be so good in this role.

Wildcard: “Where’s your helmet? Shouldn’t red hood have a helmet?”

Red Hood: “I’m trying something different.”

Wildcard: “Killing the brand?”

Jason then lets them in on what he is doing, how he is looking for a kid in their discord server named Cole Harmon. FairPlay knows who Cole is and realizes he hasn’t. When active, but none of them met him in person. Jason walks away as he realizes they can’t help him, he’s already pulled all of Cole’s post history. But he does leave them with one more note…drop the name teen titans, it’s not theirs. They argue it’s not a name, just what the servers called. Jason later makes a call to Nightwing to give him a heads up of the new kids coming in on the Teen Titans turf. Jason sees mentoring as Dick’s thing and these kids aren’t terrible and there couldn’t something there. Oh Jason, Dick is way too mentally messed up in Blüdhaven right now to be anywhere near kids, lol. That night they all went home and got to talking in a new private channel as FairPlay can see in Cole’s post history that he was going to an ASCEND rally. They don’t like “supers” and I really hope this group spun out of the protest group we were seeing in the black lighting mini last year.

As they get in the topic of what they should do about it, Jefferey is interrupted by his dad. I know their history is rough, but it’s gotta be tough when a fully geared up Mr Terrific wants to have a father-son talk. After Jason’s call, Nightwing called Michael to give him a run down on this new Teen Titans forming. Jeffery is adamant that they are not a group like that and it’s just a place where people talk and sometimes do stuff, it’s not supposed to be a thing but it kinda is. Michael talked to Nightwing for a while about what to do, and they have been looking for a chance to bring the teen titans back properly. But that’s not what they want, they are just trying to figure it out on their own not be anyone’s junior team. But I have to admit Terrific makes a great point as at the end of the day he is a concerned father and is worried about them heading out there without any resources or help to back them up. So he has already arranged for flights for Jeffery and his friends to head out to Mount Titans to check it out.

Additionally that night, the two crooks trying to rob an arcade apparently have some strong backing as they were freed the same night. They will have to pay back for the help, but tonight they are good to chill…until they see red hood waiting for them in an alley on his motorcycle. Jason pulled their reports and found they were both part of ascend, now Jason lets them know who he is looking for and wants to know what they know. One claims he hasn’t heard of him, and Jason can see they are planning on making a move. As the other tries to run, Jason kicks up his bike and races after the guy. Fully picking him up and dragging him on the ground while interrogating him. The guy finally admits that the kid Jason is looking for it’s the only one missing. Jason reward this info by dropping the guy and slamming him into some chairs, stepping up and asking for everything the man knows.

It’s really funny seeing Nightwing nervous in the Mount Titans locker room as he tries to remember all of the new kids names to welcome them into the teen titans…but as the time roles around Dick finds himself waiting on the pier to the sight of no one arriving. Alternatively, Jason is currently living in an abandoned warehouse…but at least it has hot water. Much to his chagrin, red hood is then intruded on by our new teen titans! Red hood pinged their server, so FairPlay pinged him back. They are here because they want to help red hood find Cole. Jason makes it clear he has no interest in being responsible for them. But FairPlay steps up to point out they aren’t just cosplaying as the teen titans. This is a group which used to mean something, kids who were tired of waiting for permission to act so they built it themselves! The world is moving fast and kids can easily get lost in the cracks, he should understand that Berger than anyone. So they are going to help find Cole, even if Jason doesn’t help them. FairPlay also points out that Jason’s suit is busted and his motorcycle is on its last leg, FairPlay could help fix that. Jason still tells them to leave, but then he gets a text from Nightwing which he has labeled as “favorite son” (lol) ripping into Jason for wasting his time “like usual.” I’m sure this pissed Jason off a bit and saw the chance to get back, so he called the kids back and setup a deal to let them help him find their friend, they fix his stuff, and he gets to pick the name. The final page is Dick, wearing a shirt with the iconic panel of slapping Robin but reversed so that Nightwing is slapping batman, only to get a text from Jason with the newly formed TEEN TITANS!! AHAHAHAHA! I love it!!

This is actually no higher than a 2.8.

I like the idea of teen superheroes wanting to be taken seriously. But, I dislike the way every single page of this comic tried to hammer home the idea that this group of teens is so iconoclastic. They don't want to "be" the Teen Titans, they just want to make something new and independent like they did. ... Which, they accomplish by gathering an eclectic group of teen heroes to hang out and fight crime. Just like the original Teen Titans. ... But, hey, they're unique!

Not loving the cast.

Lian Harper got aged up and turned into a copycat "Cheshire" character, more like her villain mom than her hero dad. I don't really understand why writers constantly want to reinforce the idea that Lian is ambivalent about whether she wants to be a hero or a villain. Your mom fucking nuked a country. And she was already a murderer before that. This isn't really a situation where it is ambiguous whether your mom counts as a villain. She was a villain. Don't be like her. And, anyway, aren't you powerless? Why are we acting like you have some great destiny to be a hero or a villain, anyway? You're just an athletic human at this point.

There is an Asian kid who claims to have been Shazam. I have no memory of that. Which, tells me it must have happened during that period between Flashpoint and a couple years into Rebirth, where I absolutely refused to read DC comics. I saw the Shazam movies, and I read something about a group of foster kids becoming Shazam in the Flashpoint universe. I had no idea they were adding extra Marvel kids to the mainstream universe, too.

There are two metahumans who appear to be brand new characters. Currently, they are nothing more than their powers. We were given very little, flimsy personalities to go by in this issue.

And, finally, Mr. Terrific's son. ... What a disappointment. I read the issue of Flash where Wally West recovered him, and at the same time, Wally was completely oblivious to the fact this kid was raised alongside WALLY'S FRIENDS' KIDS. Wally saw Donna Troy's son, with his red hair and his description as a lord of chaos. Didn't recognize him. Wally also saw Tempest's son, who displayed some water-control powers. Didn't recognize him. Donna and Tempest are Titans and some of Wally's closest friends, and he remained oblivious to the fact their formerly deceased kids are alive and well. Wally has since interacted with both Donna and Tempest, and he has told neither of them about seeing their kids.

Anyway, I would prefer Donna and Tempest's kids to these strangers. Why is "Fairplay" hanging out with strange teens we have never met before, rather than the other metahumans he grew up with under Granny Goodness' care? Wouldn't those two be his close friends, or even quasi-brothers? WHERE ARE THEY!?

Not loving the art. Not loving the focus on Jason Todd, the dumbest member of the Bat-family.

This book either needs to revamp itself in later issues, or it's dead in the water.

I absolutely love how Jason is written here!! I can't believe we get to see Red Hood in a brand new ongoing, written in a way that's respectful to his character and grants him autonomy. His action sequences were so cool. His dry sense of humour is perfect. AND HE'S CARRYING GUNS AGAIN OH THANK HEAVENS!! (God forbid he ever touch a crowbar again.) One of my favourite character archetypes is the reluctant caretaker, and I am so excited to see him and the Teen Titans driving each other up the wall.

I'm still not too sure how I feel about his outfit in this ongoing? I find it to be a little too much and a little too scraggly, since my preferred Red Hood silhouette is something sleek and tactical. I'm also not sure how to feel about the fact that he no longer wears the bat symbol on his chest. On one hand, I'm glad he now has his own iconic logo that still looks somewhat like a bat, but on the other, nooooo jason that bat symbol was your connection to your precious papaaaaa...

All that aside, I absolutely LOVED the glowing red eye shields. I'll always be a helmet advocate, and I know the domino isn't doing his identity any favors since his hair is so iconic, but my GOODNESS he looks so good in a domino. I love seeing his stupidly perfect white bangs every single time he appears.

Also we get a few topless Jason scenes near the end, and I saw some people pointing out how it's basically just fan service, and. Yes. That is right. What of it? I am the fan being serviced.

This was the first issue of the new team of Teen Titans by DC. I liked it; this issue set up a good storyline about looking for a missing teen. The idea of this being more tech-led is very exciting. This group was not trying to form a real team but rather to support kids like them online. It’s very well written, and the art was incredible. I enjoyed this first issue overall. However, I'm not sure how I feel about Red Hood leading this team (and his new costume), and I also am not sure how to feel about this team in general. Fair play, Cheshire Cat, Proxy, and Wildcard do not strike me as Teen Titans, so something about it makes me have my doubts. I will say that I am looking forward to seeing where this series goes, and it was nice to see Nightwing.

Ojalá esta serie continúe bien, la verdad este inicio fue gracioso y fresco, me gustó mucho y solo puedo rogar para que algún día lo traigan a México. Lo leí en inglés y me alegra poder hacerlo porque nunca nos toman en cuenta a los de latam.

Por otro lado, me dio penita Dick jaja pero también me parece que no está en condiciones de ser mentor de nadie ahorita, espero que la dinámica de Jason y los niños sea increíble, el solo hecho de que aceptara ser mentor para fastidiar más a "el hijo favorito" es un detalle que amo.

Ahhhhh, I'm so excited! I love it already, I'm so curious how this is gonna continue, especially how the previous Teen Titans are going to react! Also, gimme some more bat drama, always fun! I love love love Lian Harper, I admit, I don’t really know the others but I like the group dynamic. I’m curious about Wildcard and how his mindset will fit into the plot and hopefully change a little. I low-key already ship Wildcard and Eugene but we’ll see about that.
Overall, very excited still, my hype has not died down yet!
