A Quirky Camping Adventure With Its Own Very Odd Little Charm

Mr Scribbley: Camping in the Woods is a delightfully odd little children’s story with a world that feels immediately like its own thing.
Mr Scribbley, Sat Nav, and Worm head off for a camping trip in Wriggle Woods, and what follows is a chain of increasingly chaotic mishaps involving tents, sausages, maps, blackberries, cake crumbs, getting lost, and general Scribbley nonsense.
What worked best for me was the world itself. The Bug Mobile, Sat Nav as a literal sausage-dog navigator, Worm tunneling under his tent, and Mr Scribbley’s chaotic approach to nearly everything give the story a really distinctive personality. Even though this is Book 3, I never felt like I needed the earlier books to understand the characters or enjoy the adventure.
The camping trip also had more of a real story arc than I expected. The clues teased in the description—footprints, cake crumbs, blackberries, bandages, and Sat Nav driving everyone home—actually pay off through the events of the trip rather than feeling like random marketing hooks.
The illustrations are charming and add a lot to the humor and worldbuilding. My biggest issue was the ebook presentation rather than the art or story itself.
Despite being a very short book, the pages are surprisingly text-dense. In digital format, the prose and illustrations felt compressed together, which made the book harder to follow visually than the actual story warranted. I would be very curious to see the print edition, because I suspect a larger physical page would give both the text and artwork more room to breathe.
This also feels less like a traditional picture book and more like a short illustrated storybook. Because of the amount of text, I think it would work best either as an adult read-aloud for younger children or for slightly older kids who are comfortable with denser pages.
It is definitely a little weird.
But it’s good weird. 😂
And the fact that I finished thinking, Yeah, I’d read another Mr Scribbley, is probably the best evidence that the oddball charm worked on me.
Who Should Read?
Readers who enjoy silly camping adventures, quirky recurring characters, chaotic humor, and illustrated stories that feel a little different from a standard picture book.
For younger children, I’d lean toward reading this one aloud rather than expecting independent reading from the dense digital pages.

It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout.
The prose is age-accessible and written in a fun free verse which will have the littles chanting along with Mr. Scribbley, making a list of items for their camping trip, finding supplies, and enjoying an adventure in the woods with Sat Nav and Worm. As ever, not everything goes to plan, and Scribbley and pals (Sat Nav is his dog, and Worm, his... worm friend) are soon having adventures and hijinks.
The art is full of whimsy and details which invite a closer look. Despite being a very *fun* book, there are good takeaways about reading and following instructions, planning carefully and carrying out plans, adjusting expectations when things go awry, as well as the importance of friends and having fun.
The language and spelling are British English. It shouldn't pose any problems in context for readers from the USA, but it is noticeable.
Four and a half stars. The art and story are delightful.

I have read and enjoyed other Yvonne Toner children’s stories. So I am once again thanking you for another adventure in the wibble-wobble world.
This time Mr. Scribbley and his friends Worm and Sat Nav (a Dachshund he calls a sausage dog) are packing for a camping trip to Wriggle Woods -Looks like they have packed for a month.
Mr. Scribbley, of course, gets lost. But the friends enjoy being together and also are happy when they get back home!
In addition to the enjoyable prose the illustrations are fun as well!
I read a lot of thrillers so is it always enjoyable to escape to the world of children’s magic.
As a grandma as well as a guidance counselor, I do like reading children’s stories as well as recommend them to children, their parents and yes other grandmas.

I enjoyed reading this quirky story. The three friends go on an adventure and they each have a distinct personality. Things don’t always go as planned but that’s the fun in it. Young kids would enjoy this story, as well as adults while reading to younger children. Other than needing a little more smoother flow and minor grammatical corrections, this book is a perfect whimsical story that kids would enjoy. Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this enjoyable story!

Another lovely story in this series. I wish my 5 grandchildren were a lot younger (14 - 19!), this series would definitely be on their bedtime story list. Lovely illustrations, plenty to interest the little ones. Again, I see this is a stepping stone to getting little ones interested in the world around them. Lots of opportunities to chat about camping, animals, food and friendship.

I love this series as they are not only cute stories of great characters with lots of humour but also the art work in the books is beautiful and it is a lovely book for a child and parent to read together. A great new series for families can’t wait for more!
