Kendra Leigh Castle is the author of numerous paranormal romances, including the MacInnes Werewolves trilogy, the RITA award-nominated Renegade Angel, the Dark Dynasties series, and the Hearts of the Fallen series. 2014 will see the release of her first contemporary romance, For the Longest Time, which will be the first in her Harvest Cove series. Kendra lives in Maryland with her husband, children, two Newfs, and one obnoxious cat.
3.25 stars This one was much better. I wasn't sure I would like the hero as he had been depicted as a major jerk in the previous books but this one was sweet. The heroine runs her bakery in town and our hero has a major thing for her. Our heroine who has made some poor choices in men before doesn't want to do so again (especially knowing about hero's reputation). I liked this one: h/H both had baggage from shitty parents and I liked how they helped each other overcome them at different points.
I read this back in December 2015 because I couldn’t contain my excitement of getting back to the residents of Harvest Cove. So when I received the ARC, I was deliriously happy (I might have whimpered a little bit) and went on reading it. Let me tell you my first reaction when I finished this book – I hugged my Kindle, huge smile on my face, and I said, “Gosh, I loved this”. Yes, Leigh Castle’s latest installment in her charming Harvest Cove series, Come On Closer, was perfect for me in every way.
I was first introduced to the idea of Shane and Larkin back in book #2, Every Little Kiss. I remembered that time Shane, the all-time serial heartbreaker, who never have a meaningful relationship (which makes him pretty much a persona non grata for the women at Harvest Cove) asked Emma (the heroine) of to find him someone to be his plus one to Jake and Sam’s (Emma’s sister) wedding. Emma asked her free-spirited baker friend, Larkin. Larkin and Shane danced at the wedding – she clearly wasn’t afraid of his reputation – and that small moment was etched in my mind – I wanted so badly to read more about them; I was very happy when last year, Leigh Castle confirmed that Larkin and Shane would have their own book.
And oh how I loved and adored these two so very much ❤ ❤ ❤. First, Shane Sullivan. OH MY GOD. Yes, Shane was considered a lousy prospect for a long-term relationship. Most Harvest Cove residents willingly told Larkin that it was a bad idea. But I loved that Shane had layers and there was more than meet the eye for this red haired man.
Let’s see … Shane’s best friend (aside from Jake) was Ryan, the gay teacher, so clearly he wasn’t homophobic. Shane was willing to be dragged into delivering cake to a baby shower. He didn’t mind Larkin’s obsession to fluffy pink unicorns. He had a sugar tooth (which made him the subject of Larkin’s cupcake tests). Shane was charming, yes, but he also showed why people like Jake and Ryan kept him as their friend. Like the part where he was taking care of Larkin when she was sick. I fell for Shane, HARD. He was a great hero, not because he was perfect, but because he respected the heroine, he was willing to be silly, and he progressed throughout.
Then Larkin – oh, my dearest sweet, brave, wonderful, Larkin – who left her Podunk small town to make something out of herself. Who danced when she was baking, who sang to Marley, who loved her unicorns, who admitted that she was girly and owned it – and who saw Shane for more than who he was presenting to the world. Larkin was so perfect for Shane because she made Shane wanted to be better, and she did. Even when there were moments when she was too stubborn for her own sake.
I could write hundreds of words, describing how much I loved Larkin and Shane, but this review is already too long. Simply put, I loved every single minute of reading this. Even with the family issues – and how I loved that Shane and Larkin were able to rise above their not-so-good family – the book made me very happy and content. It was like a comfortable fuzzy sweater that enveloped me inside the cocoon of bliss. It was a perfect romance read. Shane and Larkin have catapulted themselves as one of my favorite romantic couple of 2015; while the book becomes my favorite of the series and one of my favorite reads last year as well.
Boy, am I glad that Leigh Castle decided to dip her toes in contemporary romance genre *laugh*
I've been looking forward to Larkin and Shane since book two in this series. And they didn't disappoint. Everything to expect from both turned out to be even better than I expected. Which is saying something.
So it's the fourth book in a series I recommend reading from the start so I'll keep this short. You should know what to expect at this point and this book delivers. Unfortunately, it's not all good. Yes, Shane is exactly as excellent as we expected. We knew from his choice of friends (in backing Jake and Sam against their cliquish group) that he had backbone and a kind heart. Add a quiet strength and hidden vulnerability and it doesn't get much more swoony. Larkin is likewise excellent. She's as dreamy (in the right ways) as we knew, but with a core of steel from escaping the dead-end of her family. Starting a business and husbanding it to thrive takes dedication and strength and we see how that permeates the otherwise care-free girly-girl she is at heart. All excellent.
What wasn't so charming was that each had a kind of random emotional weakness with regards to their respective families. Yeah, shades of One of These Nights only with both of them and neither in a good way. This started around midway through and escalated until by the three-quarters mark I was sick to death of the unnecessary drama. Worse, the emergence of those story threads caused some weird relationship regressions that felt out of place for people who knew they were in love. I'll leave it at that to avoid spoilers and just say it drove what had been a solid four stars down to a three it never recovered from.
The last two pages or so were pure gold, again, but too little too late for me by that point.
A note about Steamy: Middle of my steam tolerance, though a touch on the low side. There are two explicit sex scenes but they're relatively mild and shortish. It helps, of course, that they were so perfect for the characters and their involvement and an important aspect of the story to boot. So yeah, strong showing there.
Come on Closer is the latest addition in the Harvest Cove series by Kendra Leigh Castle, and it is a heartfelt read. It is a well written small town romance for two people who have troubled pasts but try to make a go of it together. Larkin O’Neill has made something of herself, owning her own bakery and living her life on her terms. Somehow she can’t help her attraction to local bad boy Shane Sullivan. Shane has a player reputation but feels something totally different with Larkin. He may have had all the privileges of a comfortable life but something is off and he’s not happy.
I’ve seen both Shane and Larkin in previous books and their personalities don’t seem that they would mesh well together but in their story they do. The attraction is there and once they commit to a relationship they both maneuver slowly and carefully to not fall into the same trappings of their own past relationships. They soon discover they have more in common than what they previously thought and now have a clearer understanding of how their families created the adults they are today. I liked both of these characters and they are good for each other. Larkin gave Shane hope for a better tomorrow and Larkin sees that not all men are bad.
Come on Closer was a highly anticipated story for this fan because I’ve seen these two characters circling and hoped they would get together. When you see their pasts you get a better understanding of the individual and know why they put up a good front for the rest of the world to see. With their tight knit group of friends we catch up with the other characters from previous stories and to me that is always a good thing. The one thing that I wish for is an epilogue to tie things up nicely. I absolutely love this small town of Harvest Cove and recommend it for those fans of contemporary romance.
I liked the story a lot until Larkin became a huge hypocrite about being an adult and making your own choices to live the life you want. But then that was resolved so I liked it again. And then it was just... over. What about Shane's parents? Or the life altering decisions he made? I really wanted to know about these things in an epilogue or something. So I'm giving it 3 instead of 4 stars because there are just too many threads left dangling at the ending.
Might check out the rest of the series, especially if Fitz has a story.
In the past few days I have read a few books but I have to say this was one of my favorite. Castle is a new author to me and I was not only impressed with her writing style but the way the story flowed. I was never bored and it kept me entertained all the way until the end.
Larkin is a baker and has her own shop. She has been crushing on Shane for awhile but she doesn't want to get involved with him because of his player past. Although they come from different lifestyles Larkin is going to give this bad boy a chance to win her heart.
Shane is used to being the love em and leave em type but after meeting Larkin and growing up he has changed. He finally convinces Larkin to take a chance on him and quickly wants to spend every moment with her until families come into the mix. His. Hers. Can they make it work in the end?
I absolutely loved this story. I loved both Larkin and Shane. Castle started these two off as good friends but still getting to know one another before they even went into the relationship territory which was more fun and exciting. Shane was an amazing character and was super sweet with some of things he did. They were little things but wow he even won me over with them.
I liked Larkin and her style. She was fun, sweet and just wanted the best for Shane and his future. She was so in sync with him not enjoying being a lawyer and wanted him to do what made him happy. They absolutely were a great couple and the more I read the more I was hoping for an engagement at the end which normally I don't do.
Castle included some cute, fun and flirty dialogue that balanced out the emotional issues that both of these characters had to deal with. There are some sex scenes but they weren't overly done.
The town of Harvest Cove with filled with amazing friends and wonderful characters. I was actually disappointed that this book had to end and even more disappointed that I never heard of this amazing series before now.
I can honestly say I will be going back to the very beginning to meet these wonderful people and fall in love with the Harvest Cove series from the beginning. A must read for 2016!
Shane likes to hang out in Larkin's Pastry shop. She makes sweets and saves treats for Shane because he always shows up and makes her laugh, it also doesn't hurt that he's insanely gorgeous either. For a while now she's noticed the way he looks at her but neither of them have crossed the line until one boring Saturday afternoon. The only problem with that is that all she's ever heard about him is that he's a major playboy. It's hard for Larkin to believe that Shane is more serious with her, but soon they both realize that even though they could not have grown up more different they have plenty in common.
This story was such a cute and heartwarming read. Shane and Larkin have to cutest banter that kept me entertained throughout the book. They both have some difficult issues to figure out, but they for each other. They finally find the one person who they can completely open up with. This is the perfect read if you are looking for a light read. Very very adorable!

My Review:
Come on Closer was a great book to read over Valentines Day. I wasn't sure that I would like Larkin and Shane together but slowly but surely Shane won me over. I like that they found a way to open up and explore what each of their lives have been and where they stand and find equal ground. I thought the story was a more realistic relationship building involvement and it was something that I enjoyed following along with. Come on Closer was a great read.
Larkin is a Baker in harvest cove who is running from her past. Shane is a lawyer buried under the big expectation by his father to take over the family business one day. Only his dreams are not litigation, courtroom and defense, his dream is to be involved in acting, drama and theater.
Since harvest cove is a small town, its only natural that Shane and larkin, two mismatch and misfit persons ended up together. Shane has the reputation of a playboy or so it seems and Larkin is a quiet mousey unicorn and all things pink girl. Together they are the perfect recipe for disaster.
It's a typical modern contemporary love story. But it went a little too smooth for my taste. There was no explosive climax. Everything is predictable. No plot twists. I figured out larkin's sister and her mother would have made an appearance and I also knew Shane would have quitted his lawyer job. It was all too easy. It wasn't a page turner for me. Nevertheless if you are looking for a light fluffy romance and nothing too heavy to wreck with your emotions then this is a sweet love story for you.
Both Larkin and Shane could've used backbones when it came to dealing with their respective parents. The love story was meh; it took ages for Larkin to fully realize that she could be good for Shane whereas Shane was in it from jump. So, score one for him! I liked how strong Larkin held onto her small business; it had taken a lot of hard work and willpower to get it off the ground and she deserved all the praise she got from the people around her. I'm glad that in the end Shane did what was right for him regarding the teaching gig. Favorite character(s): everyone in their friend group because they were all so dang supportive! That helps to make a story good, for me.
book 4, i would enjoy checking out the other books in this series, would be fun!! i think i will do that asap!! i got to go into a thrift shop in KS ... found 6 books ... for like gosh was it .25 cents a piece? i think that was, what it was??! this was one of the six i did pick ... cool cover ... the book cover got me, i mean look at that, ... what a read. new to KLC's writing. well done. will read more soon enough. i love the cover ( ;
Come on Closer by Kendra Leigh Castle is the fourth book in her Harvest Cove series. I have not read anything by Ms. Castle previously, and obviously that means I haven’t read the previous books in the series. I had no problem jumping into the story; in fact, it read like a standalone novel.
Larkin O’Neill, who owns the Petite Treats Bakery, comes from a catastrophe of a family. She has doggedly done whatever it took to get an education, start a business, and take care of herself. To do this, she has severed all ties with her family. Despite the fact that she was not supported or nurtured in her youth, Larkin is a caring, warm person.
“Feeding people makes me happy.” --Larkin
Shane Sullivan comes from old money. His family has high standards and high expectations. His dad is the stereotype of the entitled rich, and Shane desperately eschews everything his father embraces with one exception. Shane has reluctantly joined the family’s law firm. To add to his baggage, Shane’s reputation as a lothario means the local women refuse to see him as anything but bad-boy eye candy.
“Everybody tends to think the worst about me and relationships. Why should you be any different.” --Shane
Gina Valeri, one-time cafeteria lady, is known in town as “The Cake Lady” now that she is has the most successful cake decorating shop in Harvest Cove. Being a single mom was a struggle, and the hardship showed in her gruff mannerisms when she was working multiple jobs to keep food on the table. While everyone presumes that Gina and Larkin would be business rivals, they actually have a kind, supportive relationship. The two are neighbors, and Gina has become a surrogate mom and good friend to Larkin.
The remaining secondary characters are charming. Shane’s friends provide are a varied set of artists, authors, and thespians who goad him to follow his dreams instead of following in his father’s footsteps.
I really enjoyed this well-paced, relatively chaste contemporary romance. The dialogue between the main characters is fun and flirty, and the two have a believable chemistry. No “insta-love” here; Shane and Larkin are friends, and given Larkin’s track record with men, she is inclined to stay single. I loved that Larkin and Shane started as friends, and that Shane chivalrously pursues Larkin (despite the womanizing in his youth, he really is a sweet guy who now has his head on straight).
“Sometimes the wrong guy turns out to be the right one.” --Gina
With friendship as the foundation of their relationship, Shane and Larkin approach a romantic relationship slowly. Larkin presumes they have absolutely nothing in common given the dichotomy of their upbringing and socio-economic standing in the Harvest Cove community. They get to know one another, and with that, they support each other through family problems and life choices.
I thoroughly enjoyed this light, easy read. There are a few conflicts for the main characters to overcome, but no melodrama. This book has a nice story, strong main characters, interesting secondary characters, and an uplifting, hopeful tone. The only way to improve this book would be to include the Petite Treat Bakery recipes! Come On Closer by Kendra Leigh Castle was a treat to read—just as sweet of a romance as Larkin’s brownies and cupcakes.

Come on Closer by Kendra Leigh Castle is the 4th book in her Harvest Cove series. This was a sweet romance, with a small town atmosphere. We have come to love the town of Harvest Cove, and the wonderful characters we get to spend time with.
Larkin runs the local bakery, where everyone raves about her wonderful delights. Larkin has found a home in Harvest Cove, having great friends, a successful business and is a very happy go lucky young lady. Years before, when she arrived in Harvest Cove to start fresh, Larkin left her unhappy childhood in the past.
Shane has lived all his life in Harvest Cove, and we remember him in the first book of this series when he was one of those who gave Sam a hard time in high school, not to mention trying to convince his best friend Jake to dump Sam. But Shane, who has a reputation as a playboy, has changed. He is a constant visitor at Larkin’s Bakery, enjoying her chocolate delights. The two of them have become friends, with a lot of fun teasing between them. Shane begins to see Larkin in another light, as her carefree fun loving attitude is perfect for him. He wants Larkin to give him a chance, as he looks forward to seeing her every chance he can.
Larkin enjoys Shane’s visits, not to mention his looks. But she knows of his reputation, as her friends who grew up with him, tell her all the time. She is determined no matter how attractive and fun he is, to steer clear. So we get to enjoy their banter, and slowly see Shane getting through her defenses, which we find ourselves rooting for. Both Shane and Larkin were a sweet fun couple, and I really liked them together.
As their relationship heats up, we learn more about the issues each has with their families. Shane comes from a wealthy family, and works for his father, as a lawyer. He does not like his job, but his father is very controlling and not a nice man. Larkin is from a poor home, and wants nothing to do with her mother and sister, who treated her badly. It will be Larkin who will help Shane rise up and do what will make him happy. At the same time, Larkin’s family will find her, shattering her life a bit. But all her friends in Harvest Cove and Shane will be there to help her.
This was a sweet delightful story, with a great couple and fun all the way around. If you like sweet fun romances, small towns, great friends, then you need to visit Harvest Cove. Come on Closer is another wonderful book by Kendra Leigh Castle.
*I received an early finished copy of this book from the publisher, however, that did not influence my review in any way.*
I was super happy when I managed to get my hands on this book because I truly enjoyed Every Little Kiss and I wanted more from the little town of Harvest Cove. We met Larkin and Shane in the previous books and so I wanted to see what their story would be like. Larkin and Shane both have family baggage and while they seem to be complete opposite, Larkin being a free spirit who always sees the good in other, and Shane the woman womanizer of Harvest Cove, they both can't deny the attraction they feel for the other.
Their story is really touch and go. While Larkin tries to see and believe the best in people, she has a hard time in seeing any good in Shane because she's afraid of him, so they tend to make very slow progress in learning from each other. Since they took a little longer in getting together because of misunderstanding that really shouldn't have happened and because of family baggage that "separated" them, I was kind of over it and sped read towards the end. Which sucks because the beginning had such potential for a great book.
We did see some of the previous characters and it was so fun seeing them and where they are now. I haven't read book 1 and 3 but I really want to because seeing them now just pique my interest. I can't wait until the next book comes out because Fitz and Kira definitely seem like fun characters and I'm curious to see what shenanigans Kira will get herself in.
First read - 5 to 9 March, 2017 3 stars I was loving Shane and Larkin's story. I thought it was a perfect representation of a misunderstood hero and seeing his connection with Larkin develop was fun. Until about the 3/4 mark, I didn't want to put this down. I was so disappointed with how Larkin behaved once her mother and sister arrived that I found myself skimming scenes. This took too much time away from the relationship development between her and Shane, that I felt like I was suddenly missing out on significant story elements. I also hated how she behaved after the confrontation between Shane and his father. This was such a let down. As another reviewer said, the last two pages were perfect but, boy, was that too little too late for me. I felt like any kind of resolution to those conflicts was brushed over and it was a really unsatisfying finish (especially when the issues with their respective families really built a lot of their relationship issues). Also, I feel like there was never really any clarification about Shane's dating history and why he was so misunderstood. It seemed to go nowhere so I felt a bit disappointed that I didn't get more insight into that, especially from his perspective. Until I got to the 3/4 point, I would have given this 4 stars but because of the issues this book had in the last quarter, I'm going with 3.
Second read - 17 to 18 October, 2021 DNF This was infuriating and I wasn't buying into the relationship development. The 'black moment' /conflict with Larkin's family was barely a blip and seemed not even worth mentioning the way it was handled. DNF and unhauled.
Come on Closer was my first novel by Kendra Leigh Castle, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but the cover was very reminiscent of a Jill Shalvis cover, so I thought ther were good odds I'd like it. I'm a sucker for sweet romances and the fact that Larkin O'Neill was also a bakery owner sold me on reading it. I'm on a diet and thought that reading about a couple falling in love over baked goods would satisfy my sweet tooth. It was definitely a sweet romance, as advertised, but I came away craving red velvet cupcakes! If I may make a suggestion to the publisher...Please include recipes, I think your readers would love them!
Now that I've raved about the baked goods, I'd also like to say some great things about this book. It was very refreshing to see two people who thought they had nothing in common except an intense attraction, actually find that they were so much alike. Larkin had already learned some hard lessons in her life, so she was a little further along than Shane. The story had a subtle humor, the two characters had a lot of chemistry, and the storyline gave them a little conflict to resolve. All in all I enjoyed this book and I may go back and read the first three in the series. Luckily enough, I think she is the only baker in that group of friends, so my diet should remain on track.
Come on Closer is the fourth book in The Harvest Cove series and will be released on March,1, 2016. Berkley Publishing Group sent me a copy through NetGalley for my honest review.
Come On Closer is the fourth installment of the Harvest Cove series by Kendra Leigh Castle.

I adore Come On Closer! Ms. Castle has delivered cute, sweet and flirty dialogue that balanced easily balanced the emotional issued between Larkin and Shane. I love that she’s kept all her books simple and sweet. In addition, the sex scene aren’t overdone and simply hold a lot of passion and affection towards each other which captures me as a reader. I’ve enjoyed my journey with Larkin and Shane! My favorite couple in Harvest Cove!!!!
I look forward to reading more of Kendra Leigh Castle. (Can read these books as a standalone, however they are set up for the next couple.)
This is Book 4 of The Harvest Cove Series, but can be read as a stand-alone. I enjoyed this book and am excited to see that Book 5 is coming in the Fall. I haven’t read the other books, but it is obvious that previous characters will show up in the series throughout.
This story revolves around Larkin O’Neill, who owns the local bakery and Shane Sullivan, a lawyer who has followed in his father’s footsteps. Shane has a ladies’ man reputation and Larkin has been warned repeatedly by friends to stay away from him.
However, Shane is determined to win her over. Shane has to overcome many hurdles for Larkin to see that he is serious about pursuing a relationship with her – not least of which is his family.
Larkin sees there is more to Shane than he lets show to most people other than his closest friends. Seeing the banter between him and his friends was very entertaining. Larkin needs to trust in Shane’s feelings and overcome her family history and Shane is struggling with a career choice that doesn’t make him happy. They are both good for each other, but it takes a while for them to get to that point – family drama has a lot to do with that.
It’s a sweet story in more ways than one and Shane is a powerful, sexy character. You will want to learn more about the inhabitants of Harvest Cove after reading this one.
I won this in a Goodreads giveaway. I enjoyed this book a lot, the two main characters are pretty much like every other couple in a romance book. They are attracted to each other but I've tries to deny the attraction but still falls hard and ends up loving the other back and vice versa. They both go through something difficult, find they can lean on each other, say their "I love you's" to each other and mean it and then live happily ever after with a proposal. Typical romance book setting with a few steamy bits added in for some flair. The steamy bits are pretty much just porn but slightly tamer according to my bf who read just one of those parts. He had to flip the book over to see what he was reading and simply said, "this is basically porn" and then he laughed because he thought it was hilarious and really didn't expect it from the cover. Overall I really liked it, it's a guilty pleasure and the characters were written really well and yeah some parts were not stellar writing but it's entertaining. It makes me feel like reading some of the other books in the series.
Shane is quite the charmer, “good. Stay here. I love your hair. I’ve thought a lot about how it would look spread out on my desk.” I love when the head women of books surprise their men, “good point. Here,” she said, producing a box from the far corner of the kitchen. “I put this together. You know. In case you stopped by.” That she’d been thinking of him too warmed him up from head to toe, making the thought of going back out into the cold much less daunting." I enjoyed this book I liked Larkin show Shane he doesn't always have to have a stick up his butt.
Just finished Come On Closer and CAN NOT WAIT for the next book in this series. Kendra Leigh Castle is totally drawing me in to her Harvest Cove Series. It is a story that will tear at your heart. You will laugh, smile and shed a few tears but you will love every minute of the journey. One of the things I loved best about this book is that the characters aren't perfect people with perfect lives but very real people with troubles just like everyone else yet they find a way to survive and thrive. Thank you Kendra for a wonderful experience.
This new book in the Harvest Cove series is about the adorable couple Larkin and Shane. They are just so sweet together and I really enjoyed this book.
