4.5 -"If I could go back and change things..." Stars!

Katie Reus is one of the few authors that I know without doubt will always take me to my happy reading place. The fifth book in the Deadly Ops series hits the ground running with Nathan and Amelia’s story, and the author used one of my favorite tropes set around a pretty stellar suspense story; Second Chance Love.

I will be upfront now and say that I haven’t read every book in the series, but although it follows recurring characters (most of them NSA Operatives), each book is about one couple specifically, the story line plays out around them as well so there isn’t a huge overlap that can cause any confusion if you haven’t read the previous books or in order.

Monsters could have all sorts of faces.

Coming at you from several POV’s this story is mainly about the reconnection between Nathan Ortiz and Amelia Rios, twelve years after she dumped him without a by-your-leave. Turns out that there were reasons for that, and although the chemistry is still as strong between them over a decade later, Amelia is under no illusions that the revelation of the truth could put a serious dent in Nathans decision to pursue something more permanent with her.

"Is it weird that I think it’s hot when you boss me around?"

But there is also the issue that young, vulnerable women, a lot of which have worked for Amelia have literally disappeared, and once all the information is pulled together by Nathan and his team, the numbers turn out to be quite alarming. The finger of suspicion points in many directions and for many reasons, and I loved the way the author ruled out one potential suspect but then in the same paragraph almost always managed to throw someone else into the mix.

The action is interspersed really well with the sexy times in this one as well, and because of everything that is playing out, and not forgetting their past association together, the chemistry between this pair simmers from the get-go.

"I should have trusted you."

Amelia is no shy retiring lady, her sass and willingness to stand up for herself really made her an equal with Nathan in this story, but get them naked and Nathan took the lead and spectacularly so!

I love this series, but then I pretty much love everything that I have read by this author, and I cannot wait to see what she releases next.

Girls are disappearing in Miami and found dead months later. Evidence shows that they had just given birth. Nathan Ortiz works for a specialized covert unit inside the NSA called Black Death 9. His unit is investigating the abductions and murders. While undercover, he runs into his first love, Amelia Rios, who is dating their prime suspect, Iker Mercado. This is the first time Nathan has seen Amelia since she abruptly broke up him years ago. Is Amelia involved in the kidnappings? How deep is she in with Iker Mercado? Will she blow his cover and reveal his real identity? Why did she cut him out of her life so suddenly?

Katie Reus is very good at writing romantic suspense. Her stories are well-paced and action packed. She creates tension filled storylines that push and pull the hero and heroine together and apart. Ms. Reus creates a wistfulness in Amelia and Nathan drawn from reuniting with a first love. As adults that attraction has not changed. Being in the middle of a covert operation prevents them from fully dealing with their personal relationship. Being a second chance love story, however, they are constantly discovering new things about each other – a new appreciation for what is still there and what has changed. I’m partial to stories about young couples reuniting and rediscovering love later in life.

My critique has more to do with my own reading experience and the disappointment I feel with overdone themes. If you are new to romantic suspense, you will enjoy this story. It has all the pieces for an enjoyable read. There are villains engaged in heinous crimes and the hero and heroine work hard to save the day. There are plenty of at-risk moments to keep you turning the pages. My problem is that I have consumed too many stories from this genre that read exactly like this one. Amelia and Nathan start as younger lovers separated by a secret. Unfortunately for me, I read a book with that exact same secret and result a week prior. Bad timing. After years apart, something happens to one of the characters and that causes them to seek out a person in their past. Suddenly, circumstances bring the past into the present. They reunite and the secret revealed breaks them up again, and then they reunite.

Not all tropes are bad. Second chance romances are one of my favorites. However, in order to keep my attention, I need something new and creative built upon the familiar. When working with a well-used theme, it’s important to inject something unexpected. Unfortunately, this book is too predictable to be more than an average read for me.

The set up on this one is a scenario that never fails to grab me. I love second chances in romances. In this case, one of Wesley's ops guys encounters a woman he hasn't seen since he was eighteen, in love, and she inexplicably cut him out of her life. The romance is balanced with a hard-biting mission involving a twisted sort of human trafficking. The author spun-out another riveting and engaging story that I devoured in one sitting.

The story is part of the ongoing Deadly Ops series. Like the others, it is good to get it in order, but also is flexible enough to work standalone or snagged as a first encounter- and trust me, you'll want to go back for the others.

The story opens when an old buddy of Wesley contacts him and calls in a favor. A young girl who is like a granddaughter to him inexplicably went missing, but it was covered over to look like she had left for a job. When the former CIA man investigated, he learned that a startling amount of young women with eerily similar demographics are missing. Many of those women were associated with Maria's community center, but a great number of those also worked at a gal named Amelia Rios' restaurant. Wesley puts together a team to deal with this unusual mission in Miami.

Nathan Ortiz has been on desk duty as he healed from the mission that nearly ended him. As his life flashed before his eyes, it was the only girl he ever wanted who filled his thoughts. Now, on a mission and infiltrating the Miami scene as a smooth shady operator, he comes face to face with Amelia who happens to be on the arm of their chief suspect. Amelia doesn't give him away, but now after many years he has found her and his emotional response is strong.

Amelia has left her old life far behind as she worked her way out of her poor neighborhood and the past to now be the owner of two successful restaurants. She pushed away the only guy she wanted and now fills her life with work. On one of her first ventures into dating, she runs into Nathan only he is calling himself Miguel. But then she learns that he and some others are there to run a mission to find out who is taking young girls and women and hopefully save even some of them while shutting down the new human trafficking organization. Amelia's connection to Iker Mercado will help the team infiltrate the man's tight security and check him out.

Meanwhile, Nathan and Amelia use the time to reconnect. Nathan has the priority of the mission, but he enjoys having this time with Amelia. Amelia is as drawn to Nathan as ever, but will he want anything to do with her when he learns why she shoved him away with no explanation. And now she is in danger and another girl is taken.

Alright, so the situation of this one is one that breaks the heart. People can be so devoid of humanity at times and that is what the team encounters here with the evil group that are exploiting these poor young women. I cheered on Nathan and the team so hard as they worked to bust up this slimy business and take down the perpetrators.

The romance is the type I love- the second chance type, but this one had one of those situations that can go either way with me. When one of the characters breaks up a romance and crushes the other one, I need it to be for a darn good reason otherwise, yeah. Not happy.
In this case, it wasn't the past reason that caused me problem, but how the adult Amelia handled the reunion and reveal. She screwed up and that was understandable since she was a kid in a tough spot, but as an adult she got snitty when Nathan couldn't process and work through what she laid on him fast enough (as in the second he heard the truth). Yeah, that's when I got irritated with her. Amelia- who had years and therapy to work through it along with the fact that she took away Nathan's choice when she shoved him out of her life- copped a tude because Nathan needed to step away and process (and he was quiet and careful with no hurtful words, but still she pouted and avoided him after that). The snit didn't last long, but mostly because of circumstances and not because she got over herself and considered Nathan. I didn't hate her or hate the romance, but I wasn't completely satisfied, either.

As always, the time with the team on the mission for the action and the suspense was a favorite part. Love touching base with recurring characters and seeing them all working together on Wesley's missions. Looking forward to the next installment and a new exciting romance and mission. These are fantastic and I can easily recommend them who like the covert ops backdrop to their romantic suspense stories.

Suspense, second chance at love and an end to a series. A Covert Affair was a nice ending to the Deadly Ops series. While the plot of the series wasn't heavy connected from book to book sometimes there was character connections.

Just the right about of mystery, suspense and romance to be entertaining.

Danger and love make for an explosive story!

Right from the start I knew that danger and action were going to be plentiful in this romantic suspense story set in steamy Miami. Nathan Ortiz and Amelia Rios have fond memories of each other from years ago but their relationship didn’t end well. Trust was broken and now, when they find themselves knee-deep in chaos, they will either mend things between them or break them forever…

If you are looking for a sexy second chance romance blended together with tension, danger and suspense, you have chosen the right book! Nathan is a military man turned secret agent who is cool and competent in every situation. Amelia knew him when they were teenagers and seeing him again brings back all the feelings from that time—the best and the worst.

This is the fifth in the series and the stories are only getting better. Amelia is haunted by how things were left between her and Nathan, and when she gets a chance to get closure, it is a painful but liberating experience. She is an edgy character, smart and committed to doing the right thing. She approaches the situation with caution but also trusts her own instincts when it comes to love and life-threatening situations. Nathan is a tantalizing mix of protective alpha and vulnerability. He struggles to do right by his employer, who gave him a second chance, plus the woman he loved and never forgot.

Sexy and full of tension this was a great read from start to finish! ~ Diane, 5 stars

This was a tension filled action novel that I could not put down. A serial killer on the loose, attacks going on and romantic tension that kept me in knots. Amelia and Nathan made a good couple in that they just seemed to fit together even though they had issues to work through. The story was fast paced and really kept me guessing until the end and I love that in a mystery. I also enjoyed the hot love scenes between Amelia and Nathan and that they flowed with the story. The Deadly Ops guys are all hot of course and it’s fun wondering who will be next to find “the one”.

This is one second chance story I can definitely get behind. A tough, fearless heroine and a strong but slightly vulnerable hero get a second chance at happiness while facing off against a powerful adversary in this action-packed, suspenseful and passionate romance.

NSA agent Nathan Ortiz's new assignment is a tough one. The mysterious disappearance of women in Miami has come to the attention of authorities and he's part of the task force sent in to investigate. Returning to Miami brings back memories of his first love and his half-formed plan to reconnect with her but he does not expect to find her at the center of his investigation and he's definitely not willing to sit by the sidelines while she gets further embroiled in the danger surrounding the case.

Amelia Rios overcame a challenging upbringing to become a successful businesswoman and is always willing to give others a hand up, so when her restaurants are linked to the missing women, she's determined to find justice for them even at the risk of danger to herself and even though it means working side by side with the only man she's ever loved, the same man whose heart she broke. The chemistry between them is still as hot as it was in the past, but Amelia knows she has to come clean about the secret she's been keeping in order for her to have a chance at a future with Nathan.

This is my first book in this series but I've read other series by Ms. Reus and as usual the story is solid, well-written and completely absorbing. Amelia is smart, shrewd and displays an amazing strength of character, willingly putting herself in danger to uncover the mystery behind the disappearance of the women. Nathan on the other hand is mostly rational except where it involves Amelia's well-being, then his inner caveman comes out to play, which I loved especially because she's up to the task of handling him, by being either soft or forceful when needed. I love that the connection between them remained alive in the twelve years they spent apart.

I definitely will recommend this book to anyone looking to read about a show stealing and fearless heroine or a very great second chance story. This is really a stand-alone book because it completely focuses on the primary couple and only mentions characters from the other books in passing, so there is no compelling need to read the previous books before this one, but I would recommend reading the previous books (which I plan to, soon).

5 Second Chance Stars!

I love me a good romantic suspense and Katie Reus is one of my go to Authors for this genre.
Nathan and Amelia had a past that did not end well, Amelia pretty much just up and left without a by your leave. Fast forward 12 years and Nathan is investigating a case about missing girls in his hometown bringing back good and bad memories.

Amelia seems to be stuck in the middle of this situation and it is unclear which way the bullets will fly. There was alot of ups and downs and twist and turns and i enjoyed the ride all the way! The books gets you to continue turning the pages wanting to know what next??? I had to read this in a couple sittings :( Not my norm but with this book I wanted to give it my undivided attention, it was THAT good. I didn't want to miss a thing!

Now..:) The sexual tension was scorching! Amelia is sassy and stubborn and i understood how Nathan wants to shake her and kiss her at the same time which let me say once he gets going Whoooa it was super hot. Katie does not ever dissappoint in regards to her heroes. They are hot, smart, a tad less than actual caveman behavior But oh so HOT! This was another great read by an amazing Author. I can't wait until we see what else she'll give us next!

Another good installment in Ms. Reus’ Deadly Ops series. I am not sure that this has been my favorite book to date. But I really enjoyed Nathan and Amelia story.
I really enjoyed that A Covert Affair was a second chance romance story for Nathan. We have seen Nathan many time over the last four books. It was great to finally get a closer look at him. Amelia is great. She is tough and determined to be and do better in life. Which she has, but when Nathan walks back into her life things start to go south.
I am looking forward to what is next in this series.

REVIEW
This one picks up in the blown up subway from the previous book. Freeman and Ortiz are trapped down in that thing and someone is still shooting. Women are disappearing many more than anyone thought but who is taking them? Wesley has taken Ortiz into the Black Death 9 and since he is off bed rest he hopes Ortiz is ready for an op. Nathan meets Amelia once more and sparks fly. True to form with this author, we get just enough suspense and romance. I enjoyed this book and to be honest I believe it is my favorite so far in this series.

This is another thrilling romantic suspense in the Deadly Ops series. I have enjoyed each book, filled with danger and romance as we meet these enterprising heroes and heroines working under extraordinary circumstances.

Nathan Ortiz works for NSA, usually undercover wherever Wesley Burkhart, the director needs him most. Recently he was injured, but is now ready to be assigned a new mission. When Wesley is asked by a friend to look into a missing woman incident in Miami, they find out that almost fifty women have gone missing without a trace in the area, all with similar circumstances. Ortiz sets out to befriend a suspect named Mercado, however when he meets him, his whole world is rocked by a woman from his past.

Amelia Rios owns two restaurants in the Miami area; she is usually so busy that she has put her love life on hold, but she decided to accept a persistent man’s offer for a date, she needs a change. But beware of what you wish for because while she is with Mercado, she sees someone she has not seen in twelve years, and change is the least of her problems. She is shocked to see Ortiz again especially since he is using a different name, and before she can blink she is involved in a dangerous situation concerning missing women, where several of them worked at her restaurants.

Nathan and Amelia have history; they grew up together in the same neighborhood and were in love. But something happened and she left without a word to Nathan. Now they have a second chance, but must thwart the danger they find themselves in first.

This starts out fast and does not let up until the end. The relationship between Nathan and Amelia is sweet and never feels forced. I enjoyed watching them find each other and rekindling the feelings that never really went away and the two together are explosive, sharing scenes that light up the night.

Amelia has been hurting for years, feeling guilty for something she did not cause. When she sees Nathan again, all those emotion comes forward and she is both happy and nervous about talking to him. She knows she will have to tell him why she left all those years ago but she is scared, and when she finally does, he reacts truthfully, she needs to give him time to process and there are some dicey moments between them before they figure it all out. I like her heart; she is willing to jump at the chance to help find women who are missing by putting herself in danger without much thought. She knows that the team will be close by, but it is still risky. Of course this also gives her much needed time with Nathan, to close the distance between them.

Nathan is the perfect hero, former military and now working black ops jobs for Wesley. He is so surprised when he sees Amelia again, so hopeful and I love that his feelings also rush back to him. He is angry when she finally tells him the reason she left, but the danger ramps up and time is running out to find the killer, he realizes they were both different people years ago, both too young and vulnerable to fight for each other but now it is important to get it right.

The pace of the story is fast and several twists and turns kept me in the dark about the villain until the end. This is book five in the series but it can easily be read as a standalone, the author introduces previous characters and the reader does not miss a beat. That being said, all of these books are fun and exciting and I enjoyed seeing several previous characters in many scenes helping with the current situation, of course there is also Wesley, an interesting person on his own, always hovering in the shadows; I bet his story would be fascinating. This book satisfies on all levels for those that love a romantic suspense with thrills and heart.

Young women are disappearing in the Miami area! Are they part of a human trafficking ring or something more diabolical? Katie Reus, the queen of romantic suspense has once again created an action packed, sensual read that will keep the reader on the edge of their seat! In her new release, A Covert Affair she uses some characters from previous Deadly Ops Novels and introduces some new ones to weave a story of intrigue, drama and suspense. If you enjoy a good ‘who done it’ then you will love this engrossing mystery.

There has only been one woman that he could never forget. A woman so determined and self-directed that you cannot help but admire her accomplishments. He walked away from her years ago, but has regretted it ever since. Now she is once again in his life. NSA agent Nathan Ortiz has been sent back to his hometown, Miami to investigate the disappearance of young women in the area. On his list of possible people of interest is Amelia Rios, his lost love. No way would this woman be a part of something like selling other women into slavery. Is this his second chance?

Her entire life has been about pulling herself up out of life she was born into. Amelia has worked to create a new life for herself. She is now the owner of two successful restaurants in Miami and is a respected member of her community. There is however, one regret, Nathan Ortiz. He was her first love and the man she has never been able to replace in he heart. Now he is back and life just took on a dangerous vibe, someone wants to hurt her and young women that have worked in her restaurants are coming up missing! Will Amelia finally confront her past and reveal her secret to Nathan?

There is more involved than just reuniting to star crossed lovers! Someone is out there stalking, kidnapping and making young women disappear. Nathan and Amelia will work together to find out who and what is going on. Excellent read and I look forward to reading more by this talented author.

My Review:

I'm a sucker for reunion romances. I say it all the time but it works for Covert Affair. Although I think I was expecting something different maybe it did pull through in the end for me. I liked the way that Amelia and Nathan played off of one another because their personalities meshed in just the right way that really made you believe that there was more than hollow past, there was passion and emotion that continued long into the time that they spent away from one another and was reignited when they were reunited. I really enjoyed a Covert Affair from beginning to end and would recommend it to anyone.

I have love the Deadly Ops books they have been fantastic. They seem to be packed with suspense and danger. However, A Covert Affair wasn't my favorite. Don't get me wrong it was good, but it was missing a few things for me. With the previous books it started out with a bang, and had you hanging on the seat your pants. Here we go:

By the end of Edge of Danger, Ortiz is hurt badly. Scary bad. Now he's recover and about to go out on his first op after the incident. Man, Ortiz has been beat up pretty bad in this series, he definitely deserves a happy ending. Anyway, mission bound to figure out if one guy is behind the missing women in the area. He also finds out that a past relationship might have ties. Eek.

Amelia Rios and Nathan Ortiz had a relationship when they were younger. However, she ended it abruptly and Nathan never understood. Second chance love story. However, their reunion is a little harder get fixed, because 1) the mission 2) the secret Amelia has been holding on to. When Nathan finds out about the reason for Amelia breakup, he's hurt. He has to process and focus on the case.

All right, A Covert Affair was a good read, but it lacked something for me. It might be the massive explosion within the first couple of chapters or a scary car chase. There is a car chase in the story, but nothing like the previous ones. Rocky start to the reunion, which I understand need to be done. Even towards the end I wasn't satisfy. I wonder if they found Tessa or Danita, because they are mention in the book quite a bit, but I didn't see them. I guess I have to assume they were rescue and found, but still I want to know for sure. Yes, there is a little twist on person was, and I'm not sure if there is going to be any more books. The ending kind of left that open in a sense. I do hope there is more, because I love the series even if A Covert Affair isn't my fave. Katie is still a wonderful writer and her stories do grab your attention. Others have loved this one, but it was okay.

NSA agent Nathan Ortiz is back on duty! After being injured while on duty, Nathan feels ready to go back into action. His case brings him to his home, Miami, a place that brings back a lot of memories and with them comes Amelia Rios, the woman he once thought was his soul mate.

It’s been years since Amelia last saw Nathan. After breaking up with him and running away, Amelia has lost contact with the people in her past. Now, a successful owner of a restaurant, Amelia enjoys giving back to the community that helped her escape from a tragic past by helping women in need.

When women form the community and her restaurant go missing, Amelia suspects that something’s wrong, especially when Nathan shows up pretending to be someone else. It’s not long before Amelia finds herself in a completely different world where it’s hard to tell who is lying and who is telling the truth! Nathan and Amelia will have to work together to uncover the mystery but to do that they will have to reveal their own secrets…

A covert affair was mind blowing! I read it in a sitting and I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. Full of non-stop action, suspense, mystery and romance, the fifth book in the Deadly Ops series will keep you at the edge of your seat!

Amelia and Nathan were two incredible characters. They have loved each other since they were children but then one day something happened and Amelia just disappeared. Nathan has no idea what happened then and it’s high time he got some answers. Amelia was such a strong, stubborn heroine but she had some serious trust issues. Spending time with Nathan helps her deal with those issues but she’s afraid that once she reveals her secret Nathan will never look at her again.

A covert affair was incredible. The characters were realistic and the plot was mind blowing! I really enjoyed it. I can’t wait to see who is next.

This story is one of those you won't remember that much after you read it because nothing really stands out. This is a book 5 in an established series by a really good writer yet it was wrought with cliché after cliché.

This book featured NSA special ops agent Nathan Ortiz was tasked with figuring out why women are being murdered in the Miami area. These women who had disappeared were never reported missing and they all had recently gave birth. When Nathan goes undercover to investigate, he runs into his former Amelia Rios.

Twelve years ago, Amelia broke up with Nathan and never gave him a reason why. So Nathan has to solve the mystery of the murdered women as well as the mystery of why Amelia left him brokenhearted all those years ago.

First of all, the whole trope of special ops going investigating a missing girls ring is so common. Second, the second chance love where they were separated over some lame reason is another overdone story-line. Third, the lovers from the opposite walks of life theme was just the icing on this predictable installment.

I have read Katie Reus in other series and find her work highly engaging and enjoying. This book fell below those standards for me. The actual writing was entertaining, the chemistry between the main characters was believable. I have just read this type of book a lot this year and I was hoping for something extra. I had a hard time grasping is how such an agent of Nathan's caliber never bothered looking Amelia up all this time. She is a business owner and has done well for herself but she never bothered checking on the man whom she claimed she never stopped loving. I always roll my eyes because it rings hollow.

I hope the next book brings more flavor to this genre.

Another fabulous story in The Deadly Ops series! A Covert Affair is a story of forgiveness and second chances. Amelia and Nathan were once childhood sweethearts but after a tragic event occurs Amelia cuts Nathan out of her life with no explanation. Years later she is a successful restaurateur and he is an operative for the NSA but neither have forgotten their first love and when Nathan is sent to Miami to investigate the disappearance of multiple women in the area he is shocked find the woman that he's never been able to forget on the arm of their prime suspect.

This is one of my favorite Deadly Ops stories. Full of twists and turns, A Covert Affair was a fast paced read that had me hooked from page one so if you love stories with action, intrigue, heart breaking second chances at love and some serious smexiness then I highly recommend you grab a copy of this one!

Another Fantastic Story in the Deadly Ops Series. Fantastic Narration by Sophie Eastlake (audible review)

I really love this series! This book was really good too! I really liked Nathan he was sexy, strong and just awesome. Amelia was awesome too! They had some great chemistry together and there were a couple of very nicely written sex scenes, not erotica.

The story line and plot was great. Can't help but love the undercover Special Op's story lines. There was mystery, action, romance and a lot of great dialogue!

As for the narration, it was amazing. I love Sophie Eastlake's voice. She does the men's voices so well. She reads with emotion and has wonderful reading voice.

I highly recommend this book and all the previous books in the series!

Nathan and Amelia lost contact with each other when she up and left with no forwarding address, and Nathan was about to join up, so years went by. Now Amelia appears in the investigation Nathan is deap undercover in. How is she part of all this, and how come she´s still as gorgeous as he remembers?
Can they resist each other, and how will Amelia react when Nathan comes clean about his job?
Contemporary romance, action, suspense and smutty fluff in a great combo.
Disclaimer; I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

At least fifty young women have gone missing in Miami. Women of similar socio-economic backgrounds, their last communications with their landlords/employers eerily similar. One of them connected to Burkhart's friend, so the NSA deputy director sends in a team led by Nathan Ortiz.

When Nathan makes contact with one of the suspects, the man has Nathan's high-school sweetheart on his arm. The woman who cut Nathan out of her life twelve years ago without an explanation. The woman who is connected to some of the disappearances...

After two absolute winners, instead of going out with a bang, this series ends up with a whimper. Not because of the suspense part, which was, as always great, but it was unfortunately rather rudely overshadowed by the romance (no nice balance there) which was even more rudely ruined by the heroine.
The constant inner me-me-me-ing, the constant reminders of what she'd done to Nathan all those years ago, the woe-is-me whining about how he would hate her bla-bla-bla...But what does she do, when she finally comes clean and tells him, and the poor guy needs some time to process the freaking double heartbreak? Does she wait for him to do that? Nope, she starts pushing him out of her life yet again, because she's such a melodramatic martyr.

This was yet another proof of how an annoying character can ruin an otherwise good story.

Because the rest was, as I already said, rather good. The mystery of the disappearances, the shadowy kidnapper, the big find in the lake and the slow uncovering of the creepy motive behind all of it, the guessing game as to who the villain might be...Until the big reveal which I didn't see coming. Some monsters wear normal faces and cannot be recognized on sight.

It could've all benefited from a different heroine, though. Even the second-chance romance angle, which I appreciated.

The rest of the books of the series are in my favorites folder, but this one... I've struggled finishing it. This book kept me guessing the least. Meaning I pegged the bad guy early. I guessed much of the plot before it even happened. And I never connected with Nathan or Amelia the way I did the other characters. Amelia I didn't care about or what happened to her, Nathan was bland. Eh well....

Although I didn’t fall under the spell of Nathan and Amelia as much as I did with the cuter romance of Tucker and Karen in the last book, the story plot contained some unexpected twists that kept your focus on the investigation.

Wesley Burkhart, the head of the NSA, received a call from an associate in Miami indicating that one of his tenants has disappeared, leaving only a typewritten note and more money then she usually has on hand to cover the rent. She also quit her job by letter and cancelled her cell phone. No forwarding address and no way to contact her. Normally, a paid tenant leaving town in the middle of the night wouldn’t be cause for concern but with no family, this young woman would often have dinner with Matias. She wouldn’t have left town with only a curt note. Matias has been investigating on his own and has found fifteen other women who have disappeared off the face of the earth, leaving only typed notes and cutting off any means of contact.

His investigation also found that these women all have no family or close contacts, and one thing all these women have in common is the Bayside Community Center. Burkhart knows that Maria Cervantes runs that center and there is no way she would have anything to do with harming young women.

Missing women is not normally an NSA problem, but is it possible that someone is taking over the slave trade in Miami after the NSA just took down Paul Hill. The possibility that someone would be using profits from selling these women to fund terrorist activities gives Burkhart the perfect excuse to send an agent down to Florida. When the number of missing women starts to exceed 50, the pressure is on to find these women before it is too late.

Nathan Ortiz has just recovered from injuries received in a terrorist attack and he already has an alias in place in Miami. “Miguel” Ortiz is a shady character looking to get into to smuggling and he is going to hit up contacts old and new to find out who might be selling women.

Nathan might have healed from his injuries but that doesn’t mean that he is ready to go face to face with the woman who broke his heart when he was only 17, the woman he could have spent his life with, and the only one he thought of when he thought he might die. Nathan is no longer a kid and he has no intention of walking away from Amelia ever again. When the NSA wants Amelia’s assistance to get closer to one of the prime suspects, a man who has been trying to date Amelia for some time, Nathan is going to stick close and keep Amelia safe. Nathan will do everything he can to make sure Amelia stays safe and stays his.

THOUGHTS:
This one really kept you guessing who was involved and what was happening to those women. It was a interesting investigation and had a different twist to the ending.

Romantically, we started off very well. Amelia and Nathan were high school sweethearts and had a long history together from their neighborhood. Nathan’s plan was to go into the army and Amelia simply wanted to get away from her prostitute mother and make a name for herself. Amelia broke off things with Nathan so that they would each move on to the future they had planned. When they initially got back together, they sizzled. It was as things progressed and they started talking about the past that they both started lamenting the past and got that teenage angst going on again of “I think I like her more than she likes me.” and “I don’t know if he will forgive me and stay.” Both started off with “I am not letting them go ever again” to a suddenly wishy-washy “I don’t know how they feel about me.” Where Amelia and Nathan started off strong with a past history as lovers and instant rekindling of their passion, they then took a detour and the long-road to get back to that spot before the end of the story which kind of ruined the romance for me since they were both strong personalities and the wishy-washy seemed out of character for both of them.

I am going to pick my next action romance more carefully. The last several have all involved women being abducted, shipped out of the country and sold into sexual slavery. I am outlawing any future talk of spring break in my house and have considered getting those tracker anklets that they put on prisoners under house arrest for my kids. If the dogs can get trackers, then the kids can get them too, even if I have to take them to the vet to get it done. I really need a break from human trafficking stories or soon I won’t be able to sleep at night. :( I need to find a nice quiet vampire story.

Aside from my own personal nightmare, it was a good investigation and it kept you guessing.

REVIEW: A COVERT AFFAIR is the fifth installment in Katie Reus’s contemporary, adult DEADLY OPS romantic, suspense series. This is NSA agent Nathan Ortiz, and restaurateur Amelia Rios’s story line. A COVERT AFFAIR can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

Told from several third person perspectives A COVERT AFFAIR follows the investigation into a series of missing women in the Miami area-most of the women with a connection to a women’s shelter or one of the restaurants owned by Amelia Rios. What ensues is the search for the people responsible, and the horrendous discovery of the truth behind the discovery of the missing bodies.

The relationship between Nathan and Amelia is one of second chances. At seventeen and eighteen years old respectively, Amelia and Nathan had been high school lovers but life and a possible career in the military called Nathan away, and Amelia was forced to push away the only man she would ever love to keep his dreams alive. Fast forward to present day where our couple rekindle what they once had but Amelia kept secret the real reason for pushing Nathan away. The $ex scenes are intimate and intense.

There is a large ensemble case of secondary and supporting cast including several of Amelia’s employees, as well as Nathan’s Special Ops agents and friends-Cade and Maria (Bound To Danger #2); Hannah and Dax (Chasing Danger 2.5).Levi and Selene (Shattered Duty 3) , and Karen Stafford (Edge of Danger 4). We are introduced to several of Miami’s players in the import/export trade, as well as the requisite evil whose own connections to Amelia are too close to home.

A COVERT AFFAIR is a fast paced, exciting story of suspense, mystery, romance and a second chance at love. The premise is exhilarating and intense: the characters are imaginative and charismatic; the romance is provocative and sensual. The happily ever after fast forwards the story line a couple of months where we are witness to the start of Nathan and Amelia’s new life together. Katie Reus DEADLY OPS series is intriguing, realistic and seductive.

Recently off the injured list, Nathan Ortiz is chosen for an off-the-books op in his old stomping ground of Miami. He has no idea that the pursuit of missing women will bring him face to face with his first love, Amelia. She is a hard-working restaurant owner trying to give women in need a chance. But now some mysterious disappearances are leading back to her restaurants and a foundation run by Cade's wife, Maria. So the team begins an investigation where they are not sure where all the pieces will lead.

It takes them into a dark world where young women vanish to unknown ends. They are trying to stay ahead of those involved and out of harm's way. There are multiple possible antagonists, motives and mysteries.

Nathan is a hot protective alpha. Having a near death experience recently made him realize what he was missing. But he has a lot of resentment, questions, and pain stemming from their past. Amelia is sassy, smart, resourceful, and brave. But she still carries guilt from their past and fear of being rejected. The situation they find themselves lends itself to mistrust and wondering what hidden agendas there might be.

Nathan and Amelia are also trying to come to terms with being reunited and deal with the ghosts, pain, and guilt from their past while finding their connection and attraction has not waned. But there are secrets, trust issues, and lingering regrets and anger. It's a mix of lust and passion with a need for protection and forgiveness.

They had chemistry, passion and a long standing connection that neither of them ever forgot or could truly replace in their lives. But the secrets, hurt feelings and anger regarding their break up and lost years will have to be addressed to even find their footing in the present or move onto a possible future. And they also have to face the threats and danger and solve the mystery that the team is working on. Amelia seems to find herself getting deeper and deeper into the danger and Nathan is determined to keep her safe.

There were quite a few cameos from other team members: featured were Dax, Elliott, Karen, Wesley, Selene, Cade and his wife Maria. And a few other filtered in as the team hits Miami to take down the people responsible for crimes against women. I like the camaraderie and all of the skills of the team members. It was a big mystery with several possible perpetrators. It was fast-paced and full of action, danger, suspense, and surprises. But it was also a sweet, sexy, second-chance love story.

Covert Affair is the 5th book in Katie Reus' Deadly Ops Series but could be read as a stand alone. Katie really knows how to write a great romantic suspense. She has the balance between suspense and romance down to an art and always enough edge of your seat moments to keep you engaged throughout the story.

This book is a second chance romance with the trademark blend of romance, danger, suspense and action. Nathan is a covert operator in the NSA. He's a take charge Alpha hero with a bit of vulnerability thrown in. His latest mission has put him back in touch with Amelia, his first love. Amelia broke things off with Nathan without an explanation and Nathan has never really gotten over it and received the closure he'd like. Amelia has made something of her life from a very tough background but never gotten over what she did to Nathan. Now the two have been thrown together in a tense situation and found that the attraction between them is still scorching hot. However, they have past issues to resolve in between working a case of kidnapped woman.

Amelia is a tough, edgy character who recognizes that she hurt Nathan and as much as she'd like to change the past she knows she can't. She's willing to own up to her past mistakes and can only hope that Nathan will forgive her. She's a business woman with a solid life and she's a fighter. I loved that Nathan recognized that while he could forgive Amelia he still had a lot of hurt feelings from her actions and lack of trust in him. He didn't immediately "get over it" but took the time to work through his feelings without turning his anger on Amelia.

The bad guys isn't immediately obvious and I enjoyed the action and suspense of the book. This was a sexy, fun and enjoyable romantic suspense. I don't think you can go wrong with a Katie Reus Romantic Suspense book.

A sexy, fast-paced, high-stakes, electrifying, heart-wrenching raw thriller

"If you want to stop, tell me now," he said as he ripped open a condom wrapper.
"Stop and I kill you."

A COVERT AFFAIR by Katie Reus is romantic suspense at its finest with lots of depth and spice. This is the story of NSA agent Nathan Ortiz and restaurateur Amelia Rios. The characters are realistic and captivating with sizzling chemistry. They'd fallen in love as teenagers and then she'd dropped out of his life without explanation. Neither has been able to forget the other in the twelve years that have ensued. Now, fate has thrown them back together. Will long-held secrets blow them apart?.

Our NSA friends were called to action when a long-time friend of Wesley's called in a favor as a young girl who lived in one of his rental properties had gone missing. When he looked into her disappearance, he was left with more questions than when he started as he found a myriad of girls with the same back-story who had dropped off the grid never to be seen again. As the team desperately searches for a despicable psychopathic criminal targeting young, unattached females, the reader will experience a shocking and complex tale set against a dangerous underworld backdrop.

Even though this is the fifth book in the author's addictive Deadly Ops series, it can be fully enjoyed as a standalone. In fact, all the books in this series can be enjoyed individually, if that is your preference. There are recurring characters throughout each, so the books are linked, but not to where the story-lines converge. So, feel free to read them in any order you wish.

Katie's books are always must-reads for me. She is one of my favorite authors and I should have known better than to start reading this tale as I prepared for bed... as it resulted in a sleepless night. Duh! There was no way I could stop reading it once I started. I would highly recommend this book, indeed this whole series, to anyone who enjoys sexy, fast-paced, high-stakes, electrifying, heart-wrenching raw thrillers.
