Rokudenashi Blues was made into a live action movie. At the beginning of Masonori's career he was an assistant of Tetsuo Hara on Hokuto no Ken.
His name is similar to the main character of Takeshi Obata and Tsugumi Ohba's new manga, Bakuman. The character's name is Mashiro Moritaka, and like his namesake, Morita made his debut while still in high school.
The Rookies manga was adapted for an 11 episode television drama in 2008.

Review of the whole series
I feel the influence of Slam Dunk, Vol. 1 on this series. There are similar troupes: delinquent students turn into athletes, lonely genius athlete(s). Even the arts have resemblance with Slam Dunk.
This series is basically character-driven slice-of-life manga first, then sport-manga second. The character development is the main strength of the series. And there are a lot of character developments. On one volume, I gave 5 star rating because I love the antagonist team development, maybe one of the best that I have ever read.
For sport-manga fans, I want to share some warning: the sport portion is not too big. Whole series only has two-three serious matches (there is one match that I can't decide yet. )

One Volume finished, but the plot is still focusing with the moral, behavior, attitude, and dreams issues with the delinquent students.

I read the Volume 2, and now I understand more about the plot of Volume 1. It is worth the effort to be patient on Volume 1.

Enjoyed reading it but very average in most departments - art, humor, emotions , romance. The author didn't really excel in any of them. What he did excel in was the over the top nice teacher act about dreams, which i didn't like. Did enjoy the sports, delinquent and comedy parts, But as i said earlier all of them were average as compared to other similar manga's.

Voici une série que je rêve de découvrir depuis plusieurs années. On me l’avais recommandé car j’étais un fan de Slam Dunk et de GTO, cependant dans les années 90-2000 les éditions tonkam n’étaient pas fiable quand venait le temps d’avoir une série et en plus les livres étaient cher à l’époque. Je m’étais dit que je la ramasserait un jour, mais cette série fut discontinué. Par chance je l’ai trouvé au complet, à prix abordable en France. Je dois dire que ce livre redore le blazon de ma collection et ce de manière magistrale.
L’histoire est en effet un peu un mixte entre GTO et Slam Dunk car elle relate l’histoire d’un prof hors de l’ordinaire qui reprend un classe de voyoux. C’est en les faisant jouer au baseball et en montant le club de son lycée qu’il apprendra à ces petites frappes à devenir des hommes et à se donner a fond pour le sport qu’ils aiment. On a droit ici a un bon mélange de manga furyo (voyous) et de manga de sport. En plus l’auteur est un maître en ce qui a trait a faire vivre des émotions à ses personnage et de bien nous les faire connaître. L’histoire se lit comme un bon roman et je peux vous dire qu’on embarque dans l’histoire dès le premier volume et que jamais l’histoire ne ralenti. Autre coup de maître, l’auteur nous boucle un histoire complète en 24 volumes et on est rassasié à la fin. J’en aurais pris plus s’il y en avait eu plus, mais l’histoire est tellement bien ficelé que j’ai été complètement satisfait à la fin.
Au niveau du dessin, on a droit ici à un maître en la matière. Le trait est réaliste, bien maîtrisé et surtout bien rendu. On différencie bien chacun des personnages, les mouvement est les scène de sport sont extrêmement bien rendu et les dessins sont assez clair pour toujours savoir ce qui se passe vraiment. Rien a redire côté dessins.
Pour ce qui est de l’ambiance, chapeau. Je ne suis pas un gros fan de baseball, mais ce manga m’a fait aimer le baseball et même comprendre des subtilités de ce sport qui pourront faire que je pourrai écouté des match à l’avenir et comprendre mieux le fonctionnement de ce sport. Les match son complètement débile et je les les ai dévoré avec grand enthousiasme. En plus, les scènes entre les match nous font vivre le monde des voyous vraiment très bien donnant toute sa saveur à cette série.
En outre ce manga est un chef d’oeuvre à la hauteur de Slam Dunk. Je ne peux en dire plus, sauf peut être que ce manga est excellent et recommandé pour tous fan de manga de sport de haute qualité. Bien que cette série n’existe plus en format papier, elle est facile a trouver en ligne. Un must à lire et à relire.

Kalau ada komik yang menurut saya wajib dibaca oleh semua pecinta komik, maka ROOKIES bisa dimasukkan di nomor urut atas. Buku ini bercerita tentang Koichi Kawato, seorang guru baru yang mendapat kesempatan kedua untuk menjadi guru di SMA Nikogaku, setelah sebelumnya harus mengundurkan diri di tempat mengajar pertamanya karena melukai muridnya. Pak Kawato ini seorang yang sangat optimis dan memiliki cita-cita yang kuat untuk mengubah murid-muridnya menjadi para pemimpi. Menurutnya, orang yang punya mimpi memiliki mata yang bersinar, tak pernah bosan, dan selalu bekerja keras untuk menggapai cita-citanya. Kewajiban seorang guru adalah membantu muridnya mencari cita-citanya dan mencapainya.
Payahnya, dia sebenarnya ditarik ke nikogaku untuk membersihkan sekolah itu dari gerombolan berandalan yang menguasai klub baseball dan menteror sekolah, baik dengan cara halus atau kasar. Dapatkah Pak Kawato memenuhi misinya dan memberikan mimpi buat anak-anak yang sudah dianggap sampah itu? Ikuti terus kisahnya setelah pesan-pesan berikut ini, he he he.
Dari segi artwork tampaknya Morita sudah mencapai tahap matang, sehingga gaya gambarnya yang realistis bisa terlihat begitu hidup dan lentur. Dari segi penceritaan juga sudah matang sekali dan penokohan karakter dibuat dengan begitu baik. Kawato ini harus berhadapan dengan sepuluh anak berandalan yang perlu disadarkan, dan begitu hebatnya Morita dalam membentuk karakter tokoh ceritanya, sehingga saya ingat nama-nama mereka di luar kepala (Aniya, Shinjo, Wakana, Mikoshiba, Sekikawa, Hiyama, Yufune, Okada, Imaoka, Hiratsuka) lengkap dengan tampang dan sifat masing-masing!
Dari segi pesan moral juga banyak yang bisa dipetik: tentang pentingnya mimpi, keberanian untuk menggapai mimpi kita, persahabatan, dan kerja keras. Semua disajikan dengan gaya menggurui (lha wong tokoh utamanya guru) tapi ringan, lucu dan segar. Dibandingkan dengan komik sejenis seperti GTO, ROOKIES mungkin lebih serius dan konsisten dalam menggarap pesan moralnya.
Entah apa lagi yang harus tak tulis untuk meyakinkan bahwa komik ini wajib dibaca, he he he...

I can't believe how hard in love I fell with a dang SPORTS manga. I don't even LIKE baseball (but I know it's a big, BIG deal in Japan). I powered through this entire series within a few days because it was so freakin' GOOD.
Basic summary: Gung-ho teacher comes to a new school after *something-something* incident from his previous school with the agenda of taking over the school's defunct baseball club and making it into something special. He has to deal with teachers who have given up on their student, a spiteful principal, extremely troubled and violent students, and his own past confronting him... and also learning how to even play baseball!
Unfortunately, this series did not pick up much attention in American nor did any of Masanori Morita's other works. Despite his incredible art, I can understand that much of his other works incorporate a lot of Japanese idioms and cultural aspects that makes it difficult to translate. This series is totally worth the look if you come across it though!
