The televisions are displaying more ‘successful Deviant recoveries’ with each week that passes, and it’s getting on Lilian’s nerves. According to government reports, Deviants – sorcerers, the ‘out of place’ ones – have been wreaking havoc in several cities. While the government worries about the safety of their non-magical people, Lilian worries more about the restrictions that are being enforced.

Once Lilian learns that she is a Deviant herself, she is taken to The Institution: a location to train Deviants. The government’s extreme measures to keep the sorcerers in check start to become painfully clear: if they refuse to work for the government, then their existence is not appreciated. Those who refuse, simply disappear and no one in the general vicinity of the city’s propaganda seems or wants to notice. Deviants are noticing, and now that Lilian is one of them, making the decision to fight to exist and remain is inevitable.

Determined not to become a part of the shadows like many before her, Lilian – reinforced by elemental magic – decides to fight back. But fighting back comes with a price, and she’ll quickly learn that what people think can have disastrous consequences.

Aida Ausum creates approximately 43.287 stories a year, of which a whopping two actually end up on paper. She is convinced that there are millions of different stories to tell and that she can put some on paper (if her cat isn’t on top of her laptop). The colour yellow makes her happy, she can’t find a balance between eating cherry candies and actual cherries and she works together with a lot of superheroes.
