This is not an easy book to review. Well, it is, but taking into account that it is two books into one. You have a story by Hayamine Kaoru and one by Matsubara Hideyuki, who are challenged to write stories with some common words in the plot. The four words that have to appear in both stories: queen, joker, flying ship and AI.
The first one, by Hayamine-san, is quite easy to read, fun, and fast paced. It is based on Arsene Lupin or Twenty-faces's stories, with "Queen", a thief who is a master of disguise, as the real protagonist of the story, which involves stealing some AI program. Yumemizu-san, the supposedly real protagonist of Hayamine-san stories, takes a back step in this one. As I said, for mystery lovers, a very fun story. For Japanese learners, not a complicated one.
The second one, by Matsubara-san, is more of a challenge. Is filled with 回文 (palindromes), which may not be a problem for Japanese readers, but a little bit for gaikokujin. Anyway, the story, involving a 回文making-robot-cat is not as much as the other one, a little bit of a letdown. The ending is quite good, but the other 150 pages it just drags along. Fun enough, though.
As with other books for primary and middle school students in Japanese, the stories have the furigana when a kanji appears, which makes the reading quite easy. It is not a very complicated book, and quite fun for Japanese learners or not very complicated mystery lovers.
