Thank you so much to the author for sending me an early copy of this book. So overall I liked it however I did struggle quite a bit with the world building and found it a little bit difficult to read at times which is why it took me so long to finish. I did love the concept of it however I don’t know if it was just the wrong time for me to read the book but I did feel like I had to force myself to read the book at times just because of the slow burn aspect of it as well and with it being a bigger book. However if you’re someone who loves those high fantasy and love world building and more almost technological stuff then this is definitely the book for you!

I LOVED the concept of this book! The first chapter was honestly really hard for me (as a bilingual with spanish being my first language) 😭 At some point, I was like… yeah, maybe this book just isn’t for me. But I decided to keep going and THANK GOD I DID because I was rewarded!

Once all the world-building started coming together and the story began to grow, I was BAFFLED. Like… okay, you got me 👀

I’m also LOVING a badass FMC, and Lore was definitely my favorite character. Consent is really important to me, especially at the beginning of a good dark romance, so I really appreciated that.

Brightling throws you into the midst of its society and its races (and explosions), then lovingly shows you the dedicated passion the author poured into building them. Aspen cleverly teaches you about the world around her characters without overtly beating you with it, so it slowly becomes more immersive over time for the reader. The book immediately pulls you in and makes you want to learn more about everything around you, makes you keep saying “one more chapter” the more you read. There’s witty banter between all 6 of our main characters with enemies to lovers vibes, pining, spicy revenge, trauma-bonding, and ultimately love. The way the characters fit together like a puzzle over the course of the story is ingenious. With a gripping plot (hitting a little close to home with the government corruption), the characters are well-written, each having their own distinctive personalities and kinks, which come into play for reasons of which you shall have to read the book. I love how you get a little bit of each character’s inner monologue, thoughts, and feelings as the PoV bounces around amongst them all.

Over the course of the book, there were times when it would become confusing to understand who was speaking in a conversation. There were a few minor continuity issues, and one larger plot-point it was a little blurry on what information was known by whom. However, these minimal snags do not detract from the overall beautiful story!

I would highly recommend Brightling, but, all joking aside, be aware of the trigger warnings before you pick it up; it is not for everyone. Our found family hurtles through the story like a comet, each scene building on the next, meaning in every touch, every caress, every glance, every choice…Danika says in the book, “you only saw the decision I made, not the choices I had.” If you do make the choice to explore B.B. Aspen’s celestial world of Brightlings, Darklings, kinks, blood, and their happily ever after, I guarantee you won’t be sorry!

I signed up to Arc read B.B. Aspen's new Book Brightling. It's a standalone. I was familiar with her writing as an Author reading her previous trilogy book series. The Dream Weavers Trilogy. Lots of word building and characters in this as well.

OMG. I have no words to be honest. A lot went on. Lots of spice, kinks, and blood! 👀 Reverse harem. Danika needs 5 Darklings to keep her in check with her power. 😱 Danika is a powerful bad ass. Like we need someone like her in real life.

If you're into vampires and magic, I highly recommend this because it's definitely what Brightlings and Darklings remind me of and they all have their own different abilities.

As always read trigger warnings before reading. Because I know this kind of book is definitely not for everyone.

3.75 ⭐ Mostly for me this is rated a little lower because I'm not a fan of some of the names during the spicy scenes. I just have never enjoyed reading the parts where one MC is calling the other a slut(whore, etc.) or telling the other to be a good slut( whore, etc) for them. But aside from that Danika goes through so much and her 5 boys change a lot through the course of the book. I don't think I could say I have a favorite because they all have their own special dynamic.

One of the most interesting aspects of the book is its connection to the stars, constellations and astronomical symbolism. Celestial imagery is not simply decorative here. The stars, zodiacs, elements and cosmic connections are woven into the characters' identities and powers, giving the story a sense that these people are connected to something far older and greater than themselves. Danika's place within that celestial structure adds another layer to the story's exploration of fate, balance and belonging.

The world itself is populated by a wonderfully mixed collection of inhabitants, including humans, Atlanteans, Gifted individuals, darklings, star-linked beings and other races and magical entities. This diversity gives the world an expansive, almost mythological quality. The various cultures, abilities, histories and bloodlines are layered together in a way that makes the universe feel vast and lived in.

That said, the world-building is intense. At times, it can leave you staring at the page thinking, “Huh? I think I need a map or a board to map all of this out!” There are a lot of races, histories, magical systems, political structures and connections to keep track of. But honestly? You do not need to become completely immersed in every corner of the world's complicated mechanics to enjoy the story. Sometimes the best approach is simply to let the world happen around you and enjoy the ride.

Because while the mythology, politics and fantastical elements are enormous, the main focus remains wonderfully clear: the bonds between the Darklings and their Brightling, Danika.

At its core, this is Danika's journey through unimaginable pain toward peace. It is about everything she endured to find the people who would become her family, and about learning that love can coexist with darkness, trauma, rage and even fear. Her Darklings do not expect her to become softer or less dangerous to deserve them. Instead, the story explores what it means to be loved in your entirety.

This is not a gentle book, and it is not a simple world. It is dark, excessive, emotional and at times delightfully unhinged. But beneath the violence, chaos and celestial spectacle is a surprisingly tender story about found family, healing, acceptance and finally having somewhere, and someone, to belong to.

Ultimately, the stars may guide the story, the magic may shape the world and the wars may change everything around them, but it is the bond between Danika and her Darklings that gives the book its beating heart. And after everything she endures, watching her fight for her family, peace and love makes the journey feel all the more rewarding.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Brightling by B.B. Aspen, and all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

This dark, delicious urban romantasy is a reverse harem packed with snark, danger, fascinating lore, and five Darklings who are about to completely ruin you.

Danika is our venomous little FMC, and I loved her immediately. She’s a Brightling with absolutely no filter and apparently no sense of self-preservation.

“Say whatever you want. It’s not my problem that my honesty offends your delicate dispositions.”

Her snark! Her attitude! The way she refuses to back down from anyone! I ate it up.

Then we have the five accident-prone Darklings who happen to be Danika’s blood mates, the same blood mates she initially rejected. Watching them clash, push each other’s buttons, and slowly grow closer was so much fun. The banter and back-and-forth between Danika and her Darklings is absolute chef’s kiss.

And Ryder? Sir… I mean he might be my favorite!

“Ryder, still not deviating his attention from my skin, rubbed his tattoos and grinned a grin that could have soaked all the panties of the skin workers in a brothel.”

The spice is dark, and the kinks are… cough, cough… definitely kink-ing. But this book offers so much more than spice. The politics, lore, and pacing had me completely invested in the story.

Brightling is a thick book, but damn, it’s worth every page. You’ll fall for these characters a little at a time, and by the end, you’ll be completely in love with them. This is the kind of story that stays in your head long after you finish it, and I’m already missing this beautifully chaotic group. I adored this book as much as these Darklings adored their Brightling!

In an alternate version of our modern-day world, celestial beings and their dark counterparts inhabit earth alongside humans. Brightlings are powerful, infused with magic from the stars. Darklings are their mates and protectors who help to ensure their survival and regulate their powers.

Danika is a Brightling so powerful she was connected by fate to five Darklings, all of whom she rejected when they first met under the most traumatic and dire circumstances. When they find her again years later, they’re determined to make her pay for that rejection and the lasting damage it caused. But if they can stop fighting fate, they might all find safety and salvation in each other.

If, like me, you are a fan of the reverse harem +rejected mates +bully romance trope combo (often found in the shifter/omegaverse, or series like The Bonds That Tie) then this book should be on your TBR. Just be sure to check triggers, because this one is as dark as it is spicy! It also contains dense world building and complex politics enmeshed with a multi-layered magic system. The first few chapters reminded me a bit of reading Crescent City for the first time - a bit overwhelming at first, but once the vibes take over it’s all systems go!

This is a thick standalone that packs as much story as some 5-book series, so there is a lot going on. But at its heart are six damaged people learning to trust, heal and love one another amidst the chaos. The story delivers fast-paced banter, action and a whole lotta spice. It is a slowburn (due to the whole rejected mates/bully romance situation), but once the spice kicks in, things get intense - and creative!

I look forward to reading more from this author.

This was such an exceptional book. I wasn't sure after the first few pages of world-building if this story was going to be the right fit for me, but once I got into it, I couldn't stop. The characters were written so well, each with their own diverse histories. One of the MC's was genderfluid and represented really well. The FMC was flawed and frustrating, and had more courage than sense sometimes, but she was loyal and strong and her resilience was unmatched. The family dynamic with multiple partners with multiple gender identities was never portrayed as anything other than just 'family'. Well done.

This was a 5-star read with the exception of the ending. I did receive an ARC from the author (thank you!) and this review is written before final publication, so it is likely I will update once the novel is in its final print. There were multiple inconsistencies and continuity errors in the final 83-ish percent of the book. Characters would appear out of nowhere or were listed as missing, but then were on the couch in the very next paragraph. At one point, there was a chapter from Kaito's POV, but then he is referenced in the 3rd person as though it was no longer his chapter. Isa and the baby came from where? There was only one mimic, and yet 3 people showed up.

It felt rushed and improbable - which is weird considering this is a magic based world - and there were a lot of misspellings and typo's. It wasn't distracting enough to keep me from finishing, but it wasn't polished enough just yet for the full 5-stars.

Overall, I enjoyed the characters, the spice, and the bonds that connected the characters and their unique relationships. I would recommend to a friend.

I loved this book! If you are reading reviews you know what this book is about; but do you really know what you're getting yourself into?
This book is THICCCC. The characters are dynamic, diverse, and loveable, the magic is so cool, and the politics are interesting, but not as interesting as the consequences for those on the wrong side of history. B.B. Aspen is the master of writing a creepy bad guy so well that they make your skin crawl. She also managed to fit what could have easily been two to three books worth of story into one book (did I mention it's thicccc?) while making sure that the entire story was told in a satisfying way.

This book is certainly spicy (like, all the chili peppers spicy), but it isn't *just* spicy. The spice isn't the whole story, but it adds depth and flavor.

Brightling was absolutely worth every late night, every jump-scare when my boss walked in while I was busy wondering what happens next, every ache from reading at weird angles late in the night. I gasped, I giggled, I worried.

I would absolutely fist fight a darkling for Arlo Gates - even Mr. Bossypants himself. I would lose, but I would try.


I am so grateful I was lucky enough to be chosen for the ARC read of this book (and yes, I still preordered it.) Absolutely massive shoutout to the author for not only responding when I was worried about one of the listed triggers, but going as far as offering to let me know *exactly* where it would be mentioned so I could avoid it, or even to put a post-it note over it if I got a physical copy.

Very slow burn with a lot going on

Okay so first off this was a really good book. However, it was really, really long. I really struggled getting into it as the beginning was just a lot of information and not really a lot going on. I understand it's fantasy and there's World building and all of that but it felt excessive.

Things got better once they were all together. However, there is still so many things going on. There. This book struggled with pacing as some parts we're really full of action, information, or things actually moving forward while others felt like a lot of waiting for something to happen.

I personally did not connect with everything that was going on in this story and so some of it felt unnecessary for what was going on. The end of the book had a destination in mind, whereas some of the rest of it. I wasn't sure where it was going or why we were learning about something.

I enjoyed the complexity of each of the characters. They each had their kinks and their abilities that were all unique. I enjoyed the connection between the characters and the actual interactions between them more than anything.

For anyone who has an issue with long chapters, this book has some very, very long chapters. I felt in some places I struggled to want to keep reading. Overall this is a good story that could use some breathing space and more focus on the things that were important to get to the stories conclusion.

Oh what a intense ride this was.
I absolutely love a good long standalone and this one didn't disappoint.
The world building definitely took me a minute to get figured out and characters lined up. But I also was struggling mentally..not due to the book...just life in general. So idk if that may have played a role into how long it took me to get into the book.

However once I did get several chapters in, I just couldn't stop. I loved our fmc, Danika, she was absolutely fierce and fought with all she had. But also, the sacrifices she made, my heart hurt for her....just don't let her know it's not pitty. I'd like to stay on her good side okay. 😅
The whole story of the brightlings and darklings was just so intriguing and unique. Idk which I'd love to be more...
As a scorpio I'd probably be a darkling. 🤣

This book!!! I was pleasantly surprised with this one. I went into it completely blind only knowing it was a reverse harem and it was way better than anything I expected. I found myself completely falling in love with these characters and anxiously waiting to read what happened next throughout my day which hasn’t happened to me in a while. The character development, tension, romance, banter, one liners, are all executed flawlessly and will have you begging for more in the best way. Some of my favorite quotes from the book include: “You saw the decision I made. Not the choices I had.”; “Submission forced is slavery. Submission giving willingly is adoration.”; and “Hello trip hazard.” (iykyk). The spice is spicing but I love how it’s not just there for the sake of giving spice but each hot chili pepper scene adds to the plot and development of the characters. I will say I was a bit lost in the first chapter, but by chapter 2 and 3 it all started coming together nicely and I was fully invested. This is a thicc book so it could benefit from a character glossary but not completely needed to understand what is going on. This is definitely a must read for anyone who loves reverse harems, yearning, and thinks of trigger warning lists as a yummy menu. 🖤🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I love a good standalone because there is no pressure of waiting for the next book, you get to completely immerse yourself in the world, get emotionally attached, have your heart put through things, and actually get the full story.

And Brightling gave me exactly that.

The world-building, the plot, the characters, everything just worked for me. But what really had me invested was Danika and everything surrounding her past.

Her Darklings only know that she rejected them and disappeared, but they don’t know everything she went through or what actually led her there.

So naturally I’m reading like…

When are we getting the truth?

Can they forgive her?

Can she forgive them?

Can everyone heal?

And most importantly… WHEN ARE WE GETTING REVENGE?!

Because with everything Danika went through, I was READY for consequences to be served.

Then you have the Darklings and all their different personalities, the tension, the spice, the revelations and me thinking I was going to choose a favorite.

Yeah… no.

Brightling is a dark, spicy and emotional standalone that took me a little while to settle into due to the heavier world-building at the beginning, but once the story got moving, there was plenty to keep me invested. The characters are definitely the standout, with each of the Darklings bringing their own personality and dynamic to the group. Danika is a flawed but resilient FMC whose past, relationships and search for healing drive much of the story.

There’s plenty here for dark romance lovers: tension, banter, revenge, found family, diverse representation spice. I super appreciated that the relationships went beyond the physical, with themes of loyalty, forgiveness, consent and healing woven throughout.

Being a standalone is also a huge plus—you get the complete story without waiting for another book. Dark, filthy, emotional and slightly unhinged, Brightling certainly delivers.

I will be buying the physical book to go on my trophy shelves - bonus points if the cover is the same as the image here!

Brightling by B.B. Aspen is one of those books that found a way to get under my skin and stay there. I went into it expecting a good story, but I didn’t expect to become so emotionally invested in it.
The story pulled me in from the beginning, and as I continued reading, I found myself feeling so many different emotions. There were moments that made me smile, moments that tugged at my heart, and moments that made me stop and just sit with what I was feeling.
What I loved most was that Brightling didn’t feel like just a story I was reading—it felt like a journey I was experiencing right alongside the characters. Even after I finished, I found myself thinking about it and the emotions it brought out in me. Those are the books that mean the most to me—the ones that don't simply end when you reach the last page.
I absolutely loved this book and would wholeheartedly recommend it. ❤️ If you’re looking for a story that will pull you in, make you feel deeply, and leave a little piece of itself with you after you’re finished, Brightling is definitely one to pick up.
