I'm a dreamer and a do-gooder. When I realized (around age 9) that my efforts to make this world a better place were falling pretty flat, I decided to make up entirely different, better worlds of my own, and ask readers to join me there.

A good retelling usually stays as close to the original source material as possible and polishes the story with an updated sheen for a new audience to appreciate. The best retellings, though, fearlessly divert from the original while deftly preserving its essence. They keep you on your toes with unexpected twists and they take fun tangents into unexplored nooks that deepen the world and enrich its characters.

The Rat Prince falls firmly in the latter category as Bridget Hodder takes the familiar Cinderella story and adds a unique second perspective: Char, the Prince of the Rats. From the get-go, we know Cinderella’s path will take her from her struggles at home with her stepmother to a magical night at the castle ball with the prince, but as the alternating chapters explore Char, his feelings for Cinderella, and his responsibilities as ruler of the lovable rat kingdom hidden within Cinderella’s house, the story takes on a whole new life of its own. It plays with gaps in our knowledge (who knows what the human prince is really like?), develops compelling backgrounds for all the supporting characters and gives an even more intense significance to the midnight countdown.

And at the center of it all, is a lovely relationship between Cinderella and Prince Char filled with fun banter, swoony revelations and their gradual understanding of each other’s noblest human and rat qualities. It transforms the Cinderella tale from pleasant wish fulfillment into something with real heart, and the entire second half is impossible to read without grinning like a fool and curling up into a ball of delight. Apologies to Charles Perrault, the Brothers Grimm and Disney– this version is my headcanon now.

So you thought the Cinderella story hinged on a glass slipper and finding happiness with a random prince she just met? Well, think again!

Bridget Hodder's inventive retelling of Cinderella begins with a rat, Prince Char, who lives in Lancastyr Manor, along with his many rat-subjects. Also in Lancastyr Manor is Rose, now insultingly called "Cinderella" by her stepmother, Wilhelmina. Her father is out of sorts with an Alzheimers-esque ailment, leaving Rose subject to the whims and impulses of the woman who treats her poorly. In chapters alternating between Char and Rose, we learn of a life-altering opportunity for Rose: a nearby prince hosting a ball, looking for a spouse. Could she be a fit? Could such a match solve the problems the rats are dealing with as well?

There is much delight to be found in Hodder's lovely take on Cinderella. For one, the charming Char as one of our two narrators. His narration is clever and sweet, particularly as we see him transformed into a human for the night and suddenly quite taken with Rose. Avid readers of fairy tale retellings will enjoy seeing all of the attention paid to reworking the various key elements of the familiar story, eagerly anticipating the big night at the ball (I know I was!). There is so much more I want to say, but I fear spoiling the reading experience. Just magical.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Books come in all shapes and sizes inside. Some are small and quirky, others are massive and solemn. Naturally there are about as many degrees of subtle difference as there are pages in the world. The best part is, though, when you pick up a book that you know so little about, make a guess as to what sort of book it'll be, and become happily surprised by what you find inside.

I'll admit I haven't read many retellings. So when I found this book in front of me, I made the assumption that what I'd be getting into would be something quick and easy and fun. And this book was fun. But it certainly wasn't the lightning-fast read I'd thought it'd be. Bridget brings a vastness to the world of Cinderella that completely swallows you and the seconds that were, just moments before, ticking away. You find yourself wanting to read a little slower to soak in all the wonderful details. There's a whole other layered story inside The Rat Prince where we meet Prince Char and the history of his people, er--rats. The spin Bridget utilizes to make this story completely original while paying terrific homage to the classic tale is simply brilliant. The story of the Rats could easily stand as a story on its own, but the way she weaves it into the narrative of Cinderella makes so much sense that you want it to to live and breathe in that world.

So consider me a changed reader. No longer shall I be so quick to judge a retelling the next time I pick one up. Because if I've learned anything from The Rat Prince (and I'm glad to say I definitely have), it's that what you think you're going to see is most certainly not what you might get.

If I were to tell you that I had just finished one of the most delightful books I have ever read in my ENTIRE life, would you believe me?

Well, you should because I just read and LOVED Bridget Hodder's THE RAT PRINCE. Let's start with the outside cover. Now, this cover is pretty special. That's Char, prince of the rats (northern kingdom). Char is noble and caring and dashing. He has a right-hand man (rat), Swiss, who is the kind of buddy that you want when you're running a kingdom.

Now you have Cinderella or the lovely Rose. Beautiful, kind, and strong-willed but very mistreated by her evil stepmother.

Now, throw in Beef One, Two and Three (you can never really know who's who - and this is only one example of the lovely humor Bridget Hodder sprinkles throughout), some kind and helpful mice, and magic and you have yourself a Cinderella story. BUT it's not the Cinderella story you expect. This is the real and true version.

I read this book with a grin on my face the entire time. I also cried a little (in the car shop no less) but I was still smiling as I was crying. That is the true sign that you have something special on your hands.

I received an ARC but I'm buying my own because I need to go back to the world of Char and Rose as soon as possible. I LOVED THIS BOOK!! I need Bridget Hodder to put out five more books immediately. I was completely charmed by this one. CHARMED!!!

I had the chance to read an advance copy of The Rat Prince, and I'm so glad I did.

This story is enchanting. I really had no idea what to expect, other than a retelling of Cinderella, but this was so much more than that.

The chapters alternate point of view between the Rat Prince and Cinderella (Lady Rose), showing us there was much more going on in the manor than we've been told. The way the author twists and weaves the story makes it a whole new take on the classic.

The characters drew me in--yes, especially the Rat Prince--and the story hooked me from the beginning. The voice is smooth and puts you right into that time period as if you're actually there.

Fun, clever, and engaging! Definitely worth a read. :)

I had the pleasure of reading an advance copy of THE RAT PRINCE in exchange for an honest review.

I thought I knew the story of CINDERELLA. Well, now I know the truth!

THE RAT PRINCE, told in alternating voices of Prince Char (The Rat Prince) and Cinderella, gives the familiar fairy tale a surprising and delightful twist. Bridget Hodder has re-imagined this timeless story in a way that is not only engaging, but raises thoughtful questions about loyalty, integrity, and beauty.

I adored meeting the dashing Prince Char and his lovable community of rats - Lady Apricot, Swiss, and even the lazy and self-absorbed Princess Mozzarella, just to name a few. And I equally loved spending time with Lady Rose (Cinderella), the cast of characters at Lancastyr Manor, and their enchanting family history that includes a magical ring, kept hidden for generations.

THE RAT PRINCE will certainly be a big hit with middle grade readers, especially fans of fairy tale retellings and animal fantasies. Highly recommend!

The Rat Prince by Bridget Hodder is a masterful retelling of Cinderella with a twist. Or, if I’m being honest, many twists. Many wonderful twists. Hodder takes the bones of fairytale we know and casts it in a way that feels both new and familiar. It’s a blend of a story we know and love with a tale we are hearing for the first time. While I found the plot unique and page-turner worthy (I read it in one big gulp), I also loved Rose, Char and, of course, Swiss. The characters felt real, and the division between the world of rats and humans was well-crafted. I highly recommend you read this retelling. You will be glad you did when you get to ‘Happily Ever After.’

I received an arc of this book for an honest review.

“If you don't like Cinderella because she seems so "naive" and "weak," listen to this quote from the Walt himself: "She believed in dreams, all right, but she also believed in doing something about them. When Prince Charming didn't come along, she went over to the palace and got him.”

----Walt Disney Company

Bridget Hodder, an American author, pens a delectable and compelling retelling of our favorite fairy tale, Cinderella in her new book, The Rat Prince that revolves around those rats who turned into Cinderella's coach drivers after fairy god mother's magic and also centers around Cinderella herself. The rat prince, who was one of those rats from that magical night, has forever been in love with Cinderella, but the night has a different twist that the fans of Cinderella never knew about, so if you want to know about it, simply grab this book.

Synopsis:

The Prince of the Rats, who's in love with Cinderella, is changed into her coachman on the night of the big ball. And together, he and Cinderella are about to turn the legend (and the evening) upside down on their way to a most unexpected happy ending!

Cinderella thinks she must work alone to save her noble family from the ruin and disgrace her stepmother has brought upon Lancastyr Manor. She has an ailing father, a sweet, innocent little stepsister and dependent servants to protect from the wicked Wilhemina–and no way to call attention to their plight unless she figures out how to attend the royal ball.

But Cinderella knows nothing of the ancient pact between the House of Lancastyr and the rats who live within the walls of her ancestral home.

Nor is she aware that the sleek black rat she thinks is her pet is actually the Rat Prince…

and she is not alone.

Char, the Rat Prince, and his kind have always been a member of the Lancastyr Manor since the beginning of time, where Lady Rose, daughter of the manor's Lord, lives with her father, her wicked stepmother, Wilhemina, and her two stepsisters. Although after the arrival Wilhemina and her minions, Lady Rose, a.k.a, Cinderella has been pushed out to the servant's quarter and has been living in an attic with no friends or proper clothes. But this is where in the attic, she befriended a pack of rats, one of whom she named Blackie. Little did Cinderella knew that Blackie is a prince named Char and someday her dream of finding a nice Prince Charming might come true because of him.

On the other hand, Char has always been in love with Cinderella from the very first day itself, although, he considers her as a dumb girl, yet she is madly in love with her. And now there is going to be a ball in the Prince's palace and Blackie must do something to stop Cinderella from meeting the Prince, whom he found extremely unlikable, but fate had a different plan for him, when the fairy godmother turns Char into a human being just for one night. Now Char's dream might come true, and for that, you need to read this to find out what happens next.

I've always been a huge sucker for fairy tale retellings, and especially for those retellings that are penned with a twist or a with a new angle or dimension. Because it gives me an opportunity to see the story under a new light, more like reading a new story altogether. Cinderella is my favorite fairy tale and hence I could not pass up the opportunity to reviewing this book. The story is narrated by two main characters, The Rat Prince, Char and Cinderella herself, hence the readers will get to know the perspectives of the both the characters, from what they desire to what they hate, everything is penned lucidly.

The author's writing is articulate and the readers will find it easy to contemplate with the story line. The dialogues are also free flowing and flows smoothly with the course of the story line, thereby giving a fast pace to the story. There are quite a lot of twists and turns that will keep the readers on their edges pretty much the entire length of the book. And Cinderella's life has been depicted with more clarity and reality, that will let the readers visualize it clearly everything right before their own eyes.

The characters are flawlessly portrayed with realism and a bit of humor, hence the main characters and the supporting ones, too will keep the readers entertained till the turn of the very last page. The main character, Char, is a thoughtful and a brave rat, whose outlook is vividly described and so his bravado. His love for Cinderella is immense and that has been penned with emotions, that is bound to make the readers feel. And thank god, the author has not painted Cinderella as a damsel in distress, this young lady in this book is quite brave and has a calculative mind. She knows how to play her game in a house filled with so many enemies. Even the supporting characters are etched out in an interesting manner, that will keep the readers amused.

In a nutshell, this is a perfect light read that one needs to curl up with after reading a heavy book or while having a reading slump. This is an inspiring little story with all our favorite characters, bursting out in a story with a twist.

Verdict: Entertaining, funny and extremely heart touching retake on the fairy tale, Cinderella.

I've spent the last few days in the enchanting world of The Rat Prince by Bridget Hodder. I was fortunate to read an ARC of this captivating fairy tale. All I knew before reading was that the book reimagined the Cinderella story. I'm glad I didn't learn more about it before diving in, because there were quite a few twists that I didn't see coming. The story is told through dual narratives of Cinderella, or Lady Rose as she was formerly known, and Char, the Rat Prince. I appreciated the author's rendering of a strong Cinderella with compelling motivations and sympathies. And Char, the Rat Prince, was both charming and regal, while also 100% rat. I loved how the author took us inside a rat's brain, showing his motivations (food!) and the moral/honor code that governs the rats. It was all very well thought out. Also, I loved the classic fairytale feel of the novel. Plus, the cover is absolutely gorgeous and succeeds in making a rat look stately and dapper--no small feat! This is a wonderful book for the middle grade reader, and any reader who enjoys classic fairytales with a twist.

From the moment I heard about the book, I was smitten. A re-telling of Cinderella, partially from one of the rats who became a foot man's perspective? Delicious. From the very beginning, we are drawn into the world of the Rat Prince, who feels compelled to assist the horribly treated Rose, the rightful Lady Lancastyre. Only an evil stepmother, a mad Prince, and being two different species can stand in the way of their happiness. This is a delightful story, told by a wonderful storyteller. Hodder gifts us with surprises galore, right up until the end, and we love her for it.

***I had the pleasure of reading an advance copy of THE RAT PRINCE in exchange for an honest review.***

On first glance, one might imagine that this book is for children, and that it is nothing more than a retelling of the classic Cinderella story. One would be sorely mistaken on both counts.

I have deep respect for the depth of the characters and the complexity of the world Hodder created in The Rat Prince. It feels less like a work of fancy than an historical novel, despite the fact that it is purely fiction. The story takes place in Angland, a mythical kingdom that not only supports a human ruler, but a ruler of the rat realm as well. The two worlds overlap and are intertwined, and the unique rules for of each are laid out with great care by the author. I won't spoil, but there is a particular slogan of the realm of the rats, led by the heroic and arrogant Prince Char, that my kids and I now chant on a weekly basis.

In The Rat Prince, questions you may have had about Cinderella's life are answered and explained. What happened to her mother? Why did her father choose to marry his new wife? Why wasn't Cinderella, a high-born and noble young woman, protected? We're taken behind the scenes into the life of the character we thought we knew and given a glimpse into what challenges and drives her. Suffice it to say, the Cinderella of The Rat Prince is no simpleton or princess waiting for a prince's rescue. She has a fearless heart, and is willing to sacrifice for the good of her father and the subjects in the kingdom, despite the hardships she's had to fight against.

She's enlightened enough to be drawn in by Prince Char in all of his forms, gravitating towards his intelligence, courage, and sense of morality. But she's a heroine for the 21-st century. A dashing, handsome figure isn't enough to blind her to her goals. She behaves with clarity and integrity, despite the humiliations and discomforts she's forced to bear. Even when presented with a chance for revenge against those who've harmed her, she thinks with a balanced heart and mind.

Don't expect a formulaic, simple saga. The plot is twisty and complicated, and there's a certain event that literally made me suck in my breath, then exclaim out loud. The author is not afraid to raising the stakes to a high level.

Although it is not a kids' book, I gave my copy to my teen daughter to read, and she declared it the best book she's read this year. She compared it with The Princess Bride for its wit and adventure. When my 9-year-old son begged to read it, I let him but he had trouble with the poetic and sophisticated language, and the gorgeous web of cultural references, so we read it together, aloud. He was thrilled by the forays into real violence and danger, and loved being transported to the world of The Rat Prince with its customs and manners. He was especially drawn to Prince Char, who is devoted to food in all its glorious forms, and who is as pompous as he is admirable at times. All three of us enjoyed the banter between Rose, the Cinderella character and the prince.

Hodder takes great liberties with the story and is unafraid to layer on her own inventions and interpretations. The is especially evident with the Fairy Godmother character, and the goings-on at the legendary ball.

The Rat Prince is funny, smart, and gripping. It's a book for all ages, and succeeds on multiple levels, the way a fairy tale should. I loved it because it was a perfect romantic comedy. Others might argue that it's an action adventure tale, a New Adult novel, or a sweeping epic. Call it what you will, I loved every page. Recommended.

I was lucky enough to get an Advance Review Copy of this charming book. Billed as a retelling of the Cinderella story, for me it was more evocative of A Little Princess with a dash of The Rescuers. Lady Rose (Cinderella) and Prince Char (the Rat Prince) are the perfect match in this romantic/animal comedy.

I particularly loved Hodder's descriptions of Rat culture, complete with imaginative rat names (Princess Mozzerella, Swiss, Char,) and a more democratic system than that of the human society. Hodder's understanding of rat priorities is well researched, especially when it comes to edibles. I must admit I too am a sucker for good food (perhaps I have a bit of Rat in my lineage?) Along with extravagant cheeses and bread, there are pear tarts stuffed with Gorgonzola, quail's eggs, lingonberry trifle. I started to wish I had been invited to the ball too.

When Char is enchanted and becomes Prince Charming, he experiences the trials of a rat turned human, dealing with his new opposable thumbs and human emotions like guilt. (He still has his love of all that is edible though.) Traditional Cinderella details are recast in this story and we come out feeling that perhaps this was the true narrative all along?

Hodder's humor and charm are a perfect match for a fairy tale retold for today's audience. So glad everyone will get a chance to read this soon!

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book for an honest review. SO MUCH FUN!!

I LOVED this book. The tale is familiar (Cinderella), but the spin was completely new. This is the tale of the Rat (who happened to be a prince) who was turned into one of the coachmen for Cinderella's ball. From page one, I was swept into the story, and despite Char being a rat, I just loved him. So noble. Kind. Intelligent. Wise. Compassionate. . . . And I could go on. But he was all the things a prince and hero should be.

And Cinderella. Or rather Lady Rose. She was a heroine I can get behind. Yes, she submitted to her stepmother's will. Yes, she was meek and subservient. But she was strong. And Smart. And Kind. A loving daughter. A protectorate of the weak. She did not just wait for a prince to save her, but she was also not afraid to ask for help. A balance that is so hard to find. I was so sad when the book ended. I could have spent many more hours with these characters. I very highly recommend this book. One that I will definitely be buying so I can read and re-read this story to my heart's content.

This Cinderella retelling was glorious and empowering and so, so lovely! I kept wishing for something to happen at the end *no spoilers here* and when it did I nearly danced! Hodder has created a glorious tale here, one in which Cinderella has so much agency and voice. And the prince? Oh, what she does with this character! I found myself cheering for the unlikeliest of heroes (you will too). But the underlying message in this tale is so brave and brilliant and true: that love comes from knowing a person, connecting with a person--and not a magical spell that bewitches one into love. Hodder’s debut is extremely clever and will appeal to middle grade readers as well as adults. You’ve never read a Cinderella retelling like this and I’m still smiling after lapping up the last page of this gorgeous story. Highly recommend!

I read a lot of fairy tale retellings (both because I love them and because I teach a course in them), and I particularly loved THE RAT PRINCE. This book never loses its sense of magic, and that magic is made even more fun because one of our narrators is a (very gentlemanly) rat. Prince Char has a destiny of which he could never have dreamed, and I loved following along on his journey. I loved the alternating point of view, and the fact that we got to hear from both Char and Cinderella (or Rose, which is her true name). Rose is a spirited heroine who makes a great role model, as does Char. Hodder has such a gentle touch in her characterization, and her way of describing all the ways people can become a family (Rose and the servants who loved her late mother and love Rose now, Char and his fellow rats, Rose with her father's friends--a couple called Lord Bluehart and Sir Tompkin, who act as honorary uncles to her). This is really a lovely book, both for middle grade readers and everyone else.

Just when you think you know the Cinderella story, here comes this charming and captivating re-telling told in alternating perspectives —hers (Cinderella's) and his (Char, the Rat Prince).

I loved the lyrical writing and the well-developed characters, especially the rats, who had their own culture, history, and divisions. I also very much appreciated the fact that of all the Cinderella telling I've ever read, this is one of the few that fully addressed my major problem with the story — why did Cinderella put up with this? FINALLY NOW WE KNOW.

Overall this is a spectacular book that my 11 year old and I both adored. A perfect read for any middle grade reader.

It takes a certain genius to take a story as familiar as Cinderella and make it into something alive and emotionally-charged. The Rat Prince succeeds wonderfully because it brings new levels of substance to the classic fairy story. I found a rich history and mythology here underpinning the classic plot points, and Hodder’s characterization of Cinderella (aka Rose) and the Rat Prince had me emotionally invested from the first chapter. The writing is confident and enchanting, and I believe this book will appeal to a wide spread of reading levels. Several reviewers have called it “delightful”, but I think The Rat Prince has a depth as well that makes it stand out among others in the genre.

I never thought I'd read a book written from the point of view of a rat, but this is such an original retelling of Cinderella. The plot is full of twists and turns and I loved the cast of characters, especially Prince Char the rat. The characters are well-developed - Cinderella for once has a reason for putting up with her stepmother's mistreatment of her, and the supporting cast includes a wonderful same-sex couple, Sir Tompkin and Lord Bluestone.

Quirky, funny and thoroughly charming, the story also raises deeper questions about families, friendship and loyalty.

The most adorable, fun Cinderella story you'll ever read! The chapters alternate between Cinderella's POV and the Rat Prince's POV to tell a tale of a girl who wants to save her ailing father from her wicked stepmother, and a rat who must ensure his kingdom's safety from humans. Only by joining together can Cinderella and the Rat Prince overcome their dire situations.

I loved the clever twists in the traditional tale. The Rat Prince goes by the name of Char (a nod to Charming) because he likes his food blackened, and he's certainly a charming character. He's a noble, brave prince who will do whatever it takes to protect his fellow rats and to help Cinderella, known to him as Rose. Rose is clever and brave as well, and she uncovers secrets about her family history that provide a new source for the magic that allows her to attend the ball. The last several chapters were full of surprises, and the ending was sweet and delightful.

Definitely pick this up if you enjoy fairytale re-tellings!

I received an ARC of this book in return for an honest review.

THE RAT PRINCE is a delightful retelling of the story of Cinderella, only this time we observe half of the story through the eyes of Prince Char, ruler of the rats' northern kingdom. The other half of the story is told from the viewpoint of Cinderella herself.

Prince Char is determined to help Lady Rose (aka Cinderella) escape from the clutches of her dastardly step-mother and step-sister, but it quickly becomes an "out of the frying pan, into the fire" story when the plan to get her to the royal ball introduces more problems than it solves. Throw in a goddess, a human prince of unstable temperament, and a ticking clock, and you have all the makings of a thrilling ride that will keep you guessing until the very end.

Overall, the story is a lot of fun, has various twists and turns to keep the reader engaged, and the voice of the rat prince is especially well done. Readers will enjoy this fresh take on an age-old tale.

I was privileged to read this book before its release date and I devoured it in one sitting, a rare occurrence for me since I usually only read before bed and it's five minutes and I'm asleep. This one kept me up late, and was definitely worth the sleep lost.

The scene for the story is one with which we are all familiar, Cinderella and Prince Charming. But the author has re-imagined the tale to craft a new hero and a new definition of heroism. The characters are three-dimensional and sympathetic, you cannot help but fall in love with the rat prince along with Cinderella.

If you love fairy tales but also want a story that is complex and does not simplify life's complexities, this is a great read. I am, at least chronologically, no longer a young adult and I can say that no matter your age you will enjoy this book and find something in it to warm your heart and inspire you.

I was lucky to read an advanced copy of THE RAT PRINCE.

I was so excited to read THE RAT PRINCE because I love the premise--a Cinderella story told, in part, from a rat's point of view. Prince Char is dashing and heroic and his one-liners are hilarious. (My favorite: "It's good to be prince.") I laughed out loud so many times--particularly when he complimented Cinderella on her rat-like virtues. And, I will be honest, I totally fell for him during his duel at the end. Swoon!

THE RAT PRINCE is a perfect blend of romance and comedy.

I cannot wait until I get to read another book by this author!

THE RAT PRINCE is a delicious read! The author delights with the traditional elements of the Cinderella tale alongside a new and creative story with fresh perspectives. I loved the new, more empowered cinderella and the inclusion of the m/m couple, Sir Tompkin and Lord Bluestone. The writing is fantastic - classic but not in any way stilted - and there are many fun and silly moments. Romance, intrigue, fantasy, humor - this book has it all!

This book is utterly adorable - and I LOVED the voice of the Rat Prince himself, Char, with a mad and passionate adoration. Every section from his point of view was utter catnip for me - hilarious, quirky, wonderful and unique, offering a genuinely different & fabulous take on the Cinderella story. I found the sections from Cinderella's point of view a little less compelling at first only because they offered less of a new spin on the familiar story (although they were still very well written, of course), but as the story itself twisted and took on new turns, I started enjoying both of the alternating PoVs much more equitably. (And honestly, I'm pretty sure that most kid-readers would love the whole thing from the very beginning - if I'd read this book when I was 10, it would have been 5 stars all the way through!)

Highly recommended!

You have to love a retelling that puts a great twist on a classic tail... I mean tale.

The Rat Prince was a delight! Prince Char was so gallant and charming, he's now vying with Justin from The Secret of NIMH for my favourite fictional rat. I loved the dual POV between Rose and Char. It gave the reader a taste of the familiar story while building the new world.

Speaking of the new world, I loved Angland and all of its inhabitants - big and small! Swiss was absolutely adorable. All in all, this book kept me hooked and guessing all the way through. It was a lovely read. I AM a sucker for a fairy tale ending!

Charming. Magical. Delightful.

I'd be the first one to admit that I'm often not a fan of fairytale retellings, but The Rat Prince is an exception. This is, of course, a retelling of Cinderella, but it attacks it with humour, spark, and inventiveness. Not only do we get to follow an unusual take on Cinderella herself, but we also get to follow the rats whose normal role is no more than to be turned into coachmen for Cinderella's trip to the ball. In fact it's in the rats, and in particular Prince Char, who is in love with Cinderella, who absolutely make this story. They are fantastic characters who completely steal the story.

I'd strongly recommend this to any middle grade reader who loves funny, clever, fast-paced stories.

I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for a fair review, but I'll be getting a finished copy as soon as it's out.

I mean, if I don't end up loving this book, I will probably lose all faith in humanity.

Cinderella has never been my favorite fairy tale. She just seems so ... passive. So why did I love this MG retelling?

First off, it answers one of MY big questions about the Cinderella tale: What happened to the animals who were transformed into Cinderella's coachman and attendants? Were they traumatized by their stint in human form? How did they feel about being yanked from species to species? Call me weird, but this has always bugged me.

Second, The Rat Prince keeps the essential moral of Cinderella—that steadfastness and loyalty will be rewarded—while getting there in new, clever, and refreshing ways. This Cinderella isn't a stoic sufferer; her submission to her stepmother is a mask hiding plans and determination. This royal court features a same-sex couple who play a key role in aiding our heroine. The Rat Prince is an enlightened fairy tale in which wedding a prince is NOT seen as an automatic win; a story in which people are judged by their characters and actions, not by their looks or titles.

And so are rats. I loved the "rat perspective" element of the book: the details of rat government and ethics, the rat obsession with food, the rat concept of beauty (with her beady eyes, the stepmother is "prettier" than Cinderella!). Whether in rat or human form, Prince Char is a wonderful jaunty, swashbuckling hero, the kind who doesn't take himself too seriously, and his chapters made me laugh a lot.

Finally, I loved the book's prose style—just close enough to the traditional language of fairy tales, yet easily flowing and not overly ornate. This would make a wonderful read-aloud book—especially because it's likely to make family members of all ages giggle in delight.
