It's up to Sarah Robinson to save her shipwrecked family from a time-traveling "curator" of souls and a treasure-hunting criminal in Book 3 of the Shipwreck Island series.
Sarah Robinson and her family are shipwrecked on a remote and mysterious island. Their food is scarce and there's no sign of rescue. They have seen strange creatures, rescued a mysterious girl, and found The Curator, who has captured Sarah's father and stepbrother to use in a bizarre time-travel experiment. And then the only man who knows about the island comes back--he's looking for buried treasure and won't leave without it, even if it means leaving the Robinsons stranded. Sarah knows an important key to finding the treasure, but will she keep it a secret?
Stephanie is the award-winning author of the Elizabeti's Doll series of picture books, as well as several others. Her young adult novels include the award-winning The Compound and The Raft, and her next YA The Detour releases October 2015. The first two volumes of her middle grade series, Shipwreck Island and Lost, are available now.
For every mystery that 12-year-old Sarah Robinson and her family solve, more pop up in the third part of Bodeen's Shipwreck Island quadrilogy. It's a great scifi/fantasy/adventure mashup, and seems to have been inspired by classics like Swiss Family Robinson and Jules Verne's Mysterious Island. The action is sharp and the peril is surprisingly realistic, but the best part of the story is the growing relationships among Sarah's family.
This is the third book in the Shipwreck Island series. In this episode, Marco and Sarah meet the mysterious Curator and hear the story of why he is on Earth. They also manage to rescue Sarah's father, Marco's brother, and their dog Ahab.
They discover that they have the other half of the device that the Curator, who is a young humanoid, has been searching for and that he needs in order to complete his mission and return home. However, there is a treasure hunter who would also like the device and who is willing to hurt Sarah and her family to get it.
I liked that Sarah and Marco are, mostly, learning to work together. Marco's mother's pregnancy has finally convinced each of them that the marriage between their parents isn't something temporary.
This story has lots of excitement packed into its brief length. Middle graders will enjoy the adventure and the dynamics between the characters.
....Sarah and Marco have found his missing brother and her missing dad, but have no way to release them from capture. But the one person that can free them says he can't. When he tries to explain and shows them why, they can't believe their eyes. He needs something and they may have it, so Marco strikes a deal.
But can they get Yvonna off the island in time. She is very sick and getting worse. And then they see a sail! Are they going to be rescued?
The third in this exciting series which takes the reader through twists and turns to leave them wanting more....now!
In the third installment in this adventure series, Sarah Robinson and her stepbrother, Marco, learn the truth behind the Curator's identity and are offered a glimpse into his past. While her father and other stepfather remain captured by this boy, Sarah must decide if she can trust him to help her family or if his own goals will prevent that from happening. Just when it looks as though there's hope for this shipwrecked family and Cash, another victim of the Curator, someone who is even more determined to get his hands on a special rock formation arrives, and there seems no way out other than to reveal its location. The story is fast-paced, engaging, and sure to lure in middle graders who want something a little bit different from their usual reading fare.
This book is amazing and I totally recommend it! I read the whole series and loved them all. The author did an amazing job of drawing me in and leaving me with cliffhangers. I would totally, 100%, re-read all of the books! Loved it!
The reveal in the book was not what I expected- a lot of this book was explaining and talking for too long. The last bit was much more exciting. I’m not sure how the story will end- there’s only one more book!
Picks up right where book 2 left off. We find out A LOT more about the curator that had Cash. The theme that is pushed the hardest is the joining of two divided families. It is done pretty elementary like most aspects of this story, but it makes me feel good that this is a book a lot of young students could relate to for that aspect.
Tweens and teens who loved the first two books in this series will devour this one too. It has the same amount of action, adventure, step-family tensions, and bizarre animal creations. (Have you ever heard of a sharkodile?) This one veers even more into the fantasy and science fiction realms by revealing that the creators of the unique creatures found on the island are aliens. So not only does this new family have to deal with surviving on a remote island after being shipwrecked, they now have aliens and treasure hunters to deal with. Step-siblings Sarah and Marco, both 12, must make a deal with an alien child, called the Curator, in order to save Marco’s brother and Sarah’s dad who have been cryogenically frozen. Meanwhile, they meet a strange girl who was dumped on the island who speaks of hidden treasures. Also, Marco’s mom is deathly ill which scares the children. Of course more mature readers will quickly realize that she’s pregnant and likely not buy all the fantastical twists and turns of this plotline, but kids will enjoy this one and eagerly await the next in the series as this ends on a cliffhanger, just like the earlier ones.
Gah! I thought this book was the last in the series! But no, there's a cliff-hanger ending. I love the character growth the kids go through as they try to blend their families together. The plot definitely moves faster in this book, and we find out answers to many of our questions. But not all the questions...
For those who have read my previous reviews on this series...
If you haven't go on down below and click through and read them - I'll wait :)
... you'll know that though I don't typically read or enjoy a lot of Middle Grade...Shipwreck Island is one series that I do enjoy and recommend.
Sadly, although Trapped, book 3 in the series was solid, I didn't love it. Bodeen's normally compelling writing and pacing just seemed a bit off to me. I didn't feel as compelled to power through this book until the end...although I did finish reading it in one afternoon...I felt that it could have had a bit more action and less repetitive discussion.
We did finally get some of the answers to the island's mysteries in Trapped. Though, I have mixed feelings about whether I'm happy about the direction the series is taking. And an anticipated threat resurfaced which leaves us fearing for our shipwrecked family at the conclusion of this volume.
I was surprised by the cliffhanger ending as I'd assumed this was only a trilogy and can only hope and assume that a 4th volume with be forthcoming. The more I think about that , the happier I am as I'm sure that Bodeen will step it up in the series finale and end on a higher note.
Blech. Blech Blech Blech! I only vaguely liked the first novel in this series. I thought it was decent and had the potential makings of an exciting action-packed series. Boy oh boy do I regret continuing this series! Luckily, it’s only four books under 200 pages, so I’m already basically done. But wow… such terrible, terrible writing. This book was so bland, ridiculously weak vocabulary, everything sounded fake and superficial. It was just bad and near torturous to force myself to finish. It really felt like the author phoned this story in more than usual. Blech.
Bad luck continues as a newly blended family is trapped on an island and Sarah's father and stepbrother are frozen. They meet the Curator who only wants to return to his own planet. With more evil to come, another open ending leaves room for book 4. Again, a short and easy book but filled with adventure! Rated 3.5
When we started reading these, we didn't realize it was for a younger audience than she had previously written for... they are basically like reading a chapter of the story at a time. We are invested now, kind of waiting to see what happens next.
I guess I should rank this higher bc I was interested enough to keep reading. I enjoyed this series bc it was about a mysterious island and don't enjoy the sci-fi element of aliens part that much.

This is the third book... each ends without resolving the conflict~ which belies that there will be another book in the series. This is not my favorite type of reading... feels more like chapters of the same book, but not receiving the conclusion.
Sarah Robinson and her family remain trapped on a desert island with no hope of rescue. That is until a new character washes up on shore. That coupled with a discovery of a humanoid with supernatural powers give them hope of leaving the island until the only man who knows of the island reappears in search of a treasure. This is the third in the trilogy by S. A. Bodeen. However the ending of the story is a cliff hanger and leaves room for a fourth book in this trilogy. The action is fast-paced and the plot takes many twists and turns. It is interesting to see he the blended family comes together for the good of the group. Though the plot takes a curious turn, it will be interesting to see how a fourth book will tie up the loose ends and conclude the series. Luckily, the story contains enough information about the previous two books that reading the first two books is not a necessity but it would be helpful in the long run. This is a good read for the middle school student who enjoys adventure books. Recommended for grades 5 and up.
And the mystery continues! Another good book in the Shipwreck Island series. Sarah and the gang are still trying to find their way off of the island. But now they've been joined by some other characters. Are these good guys or bad guys? We're still waiting to find that out for sure. The suspense is building! This was just as good as the other two books in the series. The reason for the 4 star rating is because of how short it was. Only 150 pages. I feel like books 2 and 3 really should have been combined as book 2 was just as short. Still, I enjoyed the read. I'm looking forward to the next book. I just hope that it's a bit longer!
