‘You think I’m a police lady?’ I ask in disbelief. ‘How dare you! Have you even seen my shoes?’ I throw my leg up onto the counter, years of adult ballet working in my favour. I present my black patent stilettos with a red strap. ‘Do these look like the ugly shoes of a policewoman?’ I ask, my voice rising higher than it should. Damn it, he’s offended my shoes. He might as well have called me fat.

I feel a thrill of excitement go through me at the thought of it. I’m like a bond agent. What would I call myself? Pussy Galore’s taken. Maybe Gorgeous Chick. No, that doesn’t sound like a name. Maybe Gigi Paris. Yeah, I like that.

My God, my lady bits are so excited I’m worried I’m going to take off any minute, spinning round the room like a let off balloon.

You just can’t trust drug dealers these days.

My Review:

Don’t pick up this book unless you are ready to let your hair down for an irreverently humorous, snarky, sweary, and busy read. The writing was sly, wry, snappy, ironically amusing, and laced together with Ms. Barnard’s signature style of impertinent levity. The storylines were filled with struggling and conflicted characters who were deeply flawed and extremely annoying, yet I was invested in their plight.

The story was written from the first-person POV of Sadie who was recently unemployed and panicked by her inability to find a new job. Sadie was flippant, crass, and brassy, yet she meant well. She was fiercely independent but had a painfully heavy chip on her shoulder, was prone to irrational temper flares and was easily distracted. While trying to make ends meet and help her former co-workers/friends, Sadie found herself on a course of self-destruction. I alternated between empathizing with her and wanting to pop her in the mouth. Her unusual odyssey was cheekily entertaining, smirk-worthy, and action-packed.

I would just like to say a very big thank you to the author who very kindly forwarded me a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book and read it very quickly as I couldn’t wait to find out what was going to happen.
Also, it was hilarious in quite a few places and I found myself chuckling along!!
I loved all the main characters - the girls, but the story was definitely helped along by the gorgeous detective!
The story is well written and I loved all the dilemmas that the characters go through.
A wonderful, fun read and I would definitely recommend it.

I’ve read a few Laura Barnard books and have found them all to be addictive reads. I power through them, having a good laugh, and am always willing to read more. Thus, I was happy to dive into Dopey Women. Although I enjoyed Dopey Women, I’m going to be honest and say it’s my least favourite Laura Barnard read.

Dopey Women certainly had me giggling at the antics that played out throughout the story, leaving me turning the pages at a rapid pace to find out how everything came together. Although I had a good laugh at some points in the book, as a whole I found it to be a bit over the top.

My problem is that I’m a bit picky when it comes to my rom-coms. With Dopey Women, I felt it was the kind of story that would have worked well as a movie but felt like too much as a book. There were times where I could see it playing out wonderfully on the big screen, but as a book it felt a bit forced.

Of course, this is just me. As I said, I’m picky with my rom-coms. There is no doubt this one had me laughing, but I didn’t quite buy into it the same way I did other books by the author.

It’s certainly a fun read, though, and I’ll continue to read the author’s work.

Laura Barnard has nailed it again! Not only has she created several well-developed characters, a romance embedded in a super plotline, she also has the gift of humour! In every single one of her books, thus far, I have been in stitches, and never without a smile on my face, and Dopey Women is no exception! Dopey Women is full of ‘sexcapades’, adventure and suspense that will keep you glued to the very end.

Written in first person from Sadie’s point of view, the reader follows her character as we realise she hasn’t had a great life, despite what her colleagues think of her initially. She has came from a shady background, has experienced foster homes and homelessness. She has built herself up to management level, and for what? Just to be made redundant, leaving her barely able to pay her mortgage, not to mention her car and credit cards!!

“I’ve flipped the crazy switch and there’s no going back.”

After meeting up with her colleagues some time later, she begins to realise that none of them have had it too good either: Lexi is living with an abusive boyfriend, Steph has become a single mum since her man left, and poor Mags has recently lost her husband and is now suffering from breast cancer. And, none of them have been able to find work.

After spending time with Mags during her chemo sessions, Mags mentions to Sadie about wanting to try marijuana, hoping that it could help ease the pain. Sufferers like Mags are in a vulnerable position, not necessarily having a clue how to go about these things, or who to ask, and therefore Sadie has a lightbulb moment that between the four of them they could grow and sell their own weed. I mean, of course, with any luck it would take off and they could all be receiving a little profit to help with those bills!!

This is where the fun really starts. Believing that a sex shop sells Marijuana plant seeds, all four women decide to check it out. The scenes that take place in the store are hilarious, with Mags, Steph and Lex checking out the stock and playing with certain toys, while Sadie is trying to buy the seeds. With one member of the team having an orgasmic ‘seizure’ and someone later getting beaten with a dildo you will certainly be crying with laughter.

Before she knows it, Sadie has an unexpected visitor in Detective Harry McKenzie. He is investigating new reports that a new drug dealer is in town. Sadie is a suspect, but when they encounter each other they find a little more than what they were expecting. Arrogant, rugged and muscly Harry is taken in by this unlikely suspect. And she in turn finds herself thinking about him. But, she can’t get close to him with her being a suspect. Surely he’s trying to get close to get her to confess? Maybe she should get close to him to find out what he knows? These thoughts constantly go through Sadie’s mind. He’s so god damn sexy though and she just can’t stop thinking about what she desires him to do to her.

“… This will make him think I’ve been dreaming about him. When I have. A normal person wouldn’t have replayed the coffee shop in their head fifteen times, each time ending with us naked and covered in coffee beans. But I never claim to be normal…

… He knows my name. It sounds so sexy on his lips. He must have tracked me down. It seems I’m not the only one fantasizing about coffee beans.”

The author has done a great job in telling parts of the story from Harry’s perspective too in opening up the reader to Harry’s diary. Sadie is a suspect, but he finds her so hot that he just can’t stop having the most savage thoughts. He wants her, and just maybe then she’ll open up about the drugs too.

Not only has Sadie got Harry to worry about, but it also isn’t too long before the already established drug dealer of the area begins to threaten her when they realise that she is dealing on their patch. These moments are intense and suspenseful at times as the reader awaits what will become of Sadie and just how far these threats will go. Especially when Sadie and her friends think up incredible ways to encourage the drug dealer to back off.

I found Dopey Women slightly darker than Laura’s other stories possibly because of the criminal element and the hot, hot sex. However, this did not affect just how funny the author’s work is. Dopey Women is a bizarre combination of Breaking Bad (tv black comedy drama) meets Miranda (tv sitcom), with a dash of Bridget Jones (I have actually likened Laura’s work to the latter two in previous reviews). I mean, imagine Miranda and her friends setting up a drug business, to help people and pay their bills, but then they get caught up with a hot detective on their trail who ultimately himself gets caught up in erotic thoughts and dealings with one of his suspects, while they also have an enraged, aggressive drug dealer out to stop them at the same time! The girls’ methods of dealing with the fiasco, particularly Sadie’s, are outrageous, quirky and usually wind them up in further trouble…

…which is just what you should expect when reading a Laura Barnard book!

Enjoy!

Arc given by the author for a honest review.

WOW! Just WOW! This is an absolutely, amazingly, hilarious book that
you just have to read! Seriously this will cheer you up and have you
rolling on the floor laughing.

I don't read "Chick Lit" as much as I should and I am so glad that I read
this one.

Sadie and a few of her work colleague's are suddenly made redundant
from where they work and its the last thing any of them need.
Several months and still no work, Sadie bumps into the other girls at the
job centre and decide on a coffee and a catch up. When Mags announces
she has breast cancer and has heard marijuana can help to ease the
symptoms of the chemo, the girls decide to start a little venture........

After a hilarious start, the new venture seems to be going quite well for
the ladies, that is until the local drug dealer gets wind of them and
suddenly the ladies find themselves in the middle of a drug war with
them.

With their lives at risk and the police asking questions (or should a say a
certain extremely gorgeous detective by the name of Harry Mackenzie),
will the ladies decide to end the venture or will they stand up and fight?

There are so many reasons why you should read this book. For starters
and I know I've said it already, but its bloody hilarious and such a feel
good book. The story flows and is well written and thought out. You will
love the character's so much as they are easy to relate to.
This is a book I would read again and again and would recommend it to
anyone. A very well deserved 5 stars.

5 Star Review
I was given this book for a honest review.
I have say right away this book was hilarious it had me laughing out loud and getting some very strange looks from my husband.
Sadie, Mag's,Lexi and Steph worked together but have all been made redundant. A chance meeting at the local job centre finds them all having problems with finding jobs and earning money on top of that Mag's has lost her husband and is going through Chemo for cancer.....
The group of women decide that they could help the patients going through chemo and earn some money by growing marijuana and baking cookies with it in them...
What they don't bargain for is stepping on a local drugs baron toes and this is when the fun really begins . We then meet the handsome detective who goes by the name of Harry. Harry is looking for promotion but it turns into more than that when he falls for Sadie but he is a policeman and she is a amateur drugs dealer......
Mag's and Sadie were fun, laugh till you piss your pants characters.
Lexi and Steph had deeper issues and at times I wanted to yell at them but overall this book had me loving them all.
This book does cover some criminal activity and Sadie does pay the price for breaking in the law . Will Harry wait for her or will he move on after all he is a detective....
This is the first book I have read by Laura Barnard and I will be looking for more
Laura brought Humor to a subject that most people don't want to talk about, but she stil showed compassion for the subject matter.

Sadie is an Office Manager who unfortunately is made redundant along with her girls. A couple of months later, she runs into them again at the local job centre. Neither has found employment as yet. After taking sometime to catch up, they come up with a scheme to make money - maybe not everyone's cup of tea.
In the process, Sadie meets DC Harry Mackenzie who is investigating a lead for the drug squad.

The girls get caught up in a world they never wanted to be involved in, and with every great Laura book, get themselves into predicaments that will make you laugh, cry and laugh again, with a touch of swooning. With Sadie's unconventional upbringing, she thought she could handle this new venture, but once you are involved, there is no going back, even if she wanted to.

What I loved about this book, and every Laura book is the camaraderie between the characters and the hilarious dilemmas they go through. I love her male leads, and this one wasn't shaping up well, but hang in there, as he has a lot of growth within the book. I only wish there was more of the couple, as they were so sweet. I love to read Laura's books, and even though this wasn't my favourite, I recommend it highly for a fun read.

Dopey Women by Laura Barnard is a romantic comedy that I listened to on audio narrated by Mandy Williams.

I absolutely love Laura’s books! They always leave me with a smile on my face. I absolutely loved all the characters in this series. I loved the friendship between Sadie, Steph, Lexi, and Mags. Sadie and Harry's relationship was a bit messy but you can't help but root for them.

Mandy did an amazing job on the narration. I look forward to listening to more of her work in the future.

I would highly recommend this series if you love Chick Lits or Romantic Comedies.

The characters are as witty and outrageous as she is! I laughed my head off! From the first chapter to the last. With relatable characters,!we know at least one of these characters if not all! I’m totally Sadie I’m the friend weird things always seem to happen to,! This is a must for any anglophiles out there, it will give you a taste of London! This is a comedy-filled crime caper that will have you in stitches.
Think of the American TV drama WEEDS mixes with British humour of Notting hill or 4 weddings and a funeral. Written in the first person. It leans more toward romance than erotica.

No cliffhanger and a H E A, kind of?

I've said it before and I'll say it again.... And again! But I just love Laura's writing and it's so funny.

This book is like settling down with your favourite comfort TV shows and just chilling and having a laugh! Grab a drink, some snacks and snuggle down to this masterpiece.

This one was different to the other books I've read by Laura, this wasn't the standard romance book. But does it still pack everything in.

You meet a group of ladies who are made redundant from their job and we follow them along a hilarious journey after that. All the characters bring something different and they all shone in their own ways.

Honestly if you haven't read any of Laura's books then you really should check them out!

This book was amazing!

I absolutely loved Sadie, Harry and all of the other characters too!

This book was romantic, gripping and steamy at times. It was a book that I could not put down.

I loved the storyline of this book as Sadie and her friends become drug dealers and a very suspicious, sexy detective is on their trail. What will happen to Sadie and the girls? What will Harry do?

I was provided an early copy of Dopey Women in exchange for an honest review. Honestly, this book is absolutely hilarious, brutally honest and deeply enthralling! The story begins with Sadie being called into the boss’s office for what she believes is a well-deserved promotion. When she walks in, her boss tells her that her department is all essentially…terminated. She has to face three women and inform them of this terrifying and difficult anomaly—right after she has a full on breakdown and throws something through her boss’s window for the lack of respect that he has given to her and her team. Sadie decides that the best way to find other employment is to go and apply to as many places as possible; however, when months go by without any word…she comes up with this crazy idea and the girls agree with her. They are going to start growing and distributing marijuana for cancer patients to help them through their chemo! That would make a boatload of money, right?! As soon as things get a little HARRY…she decides that they may have overstepped the boundaries, and she has become the very thing that she despises, out of total desperation. By the time she makes this rationalization, she doesn’t know if it has become too late to back out. What if she gets caught and goes to jail—could she ever have a prosperous future after that…and what happens to the girls that she has formed such a strong relationship with if she just turns her back and walks away?

My favorite characters in Dopey Women are Sadie and Mags. The author has gifted both of these women with grand personalities! While Lexi and Steph were a little annoying, Mags and Sadie were fun, piss-your-pants funny, intelligent and honest. What I loved most about the both of them was that they seemed to have the strongest connection, like mother and daughter. Their moral compass may have been off by a bit…okay a lot, yet it still took strength to move forward after they knew the consequences. In my opinion, no one likes to read about someone’s perfect life—and theirs were all far from it! Harry seemed very stand-offish at first; however, I warmed up to him quickly and could see what direction his life was heading before him!

I really enjoyed reading the story because it was highly creative, well-written and fast-paced. The author was able to hold my attention throughout the entire read. Overall, this was a wonderful read. I would have to note that I think this story to be inappropriate for anyone under the age of eighteen due to the language and situational dilemmas that are placed into the plot of the story. It was incredibly difficult to put down and any books that I have difficulty with this problem deserve five stars!

ARC provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

What can I say? It was amazing. I enjoyed this book a lot! From the first page the story sucked me in and wouldn't let go. I read in one sitting. Maybe 4-5 hours? It was that Good!

The story flows perfectly and characters are brilliantly developed. Simply amazing.

The main character, Sadie, after 10 years at her current job she has been made redundant. Gone her years of hard work, of long hours. One day, during job search, she bumps into 3 other ladies that were made redundant together with her: Lexi, Mags and Steph. They decide to catch up.

All of them start to tell their stories after they lost their jobs. Mags, who lost her job and a husband, found out she has a cancer. Steph became a lonely mother after her boyfriend decided she is not it and run away. Lexi also have a sad story: she is in abusive relationship and is not sure how to reclaim her freedom.

After a long catch up they decide to do something. Something that will help not only them but other people. And what they decide? No. Not put a company together or anything like that. They found themselves doing drugs.

This causes them to be on a radar of a big bad drug lord and also police.

I will not tell you the rest as you have to read it!!

Amazing 5 stars!!

Well Laura Barnard has managed to do it again! Smashed it out the park! Hit a home run! She has yet again created a well developed romance and a hilarious group of characters.
She has achieved to combine romance and humour perfectly yet again, which is why I'm no stranger to this author and her books.

The storyline is unique and I can honestly say I've never read one quite like it before, which as a avid reader is always a wonderful surprise!
The majority of the book is written in Sadie's POV but you are also treated to the occasional POV of Harry (the very hot detective!) but not in the conventional way... I'll leave that for you guys to find out...But each and every character brings something to the table to create this marvellous book

There are many funny moments between the group of friends that can be quite relatable especially when us ladies let our little bit of crazy loose hahaha but that being said you also have the elements of danger they get into... all which leads to many fiascos that had me in fits of giggles!

So to sum it up... This book contains an abundance of comedy, complicated romances, some steamy sex, gripping suspense and a great book hangover! Oh how I love to read a Laura Barnard book <3

Oh my gosh! Let me start by saying I loved this book!! The story just flowed from start to finish and I was so engrossed in it that I had to read it in one sitting.

Sadie is down on her luck. She has just been made redundant after 10 years at her job. She is in the job search office when she bumps into Mags, Lexi and Steph (all old work colleagues). Over a cup of coffee they catch up and each has their own sad story to tell since they lost their jobs. Mags not only lost her husband, but she also has cancer. Lexi lives with her abusive boyfriend and Steph is not a single mother after her boyfriend did a runner.

There 4 women find themselves in the drug business as a means of not only making money to live, but also to help cancer patients but this draws the attention of not only the police but also a big bad drug dealer.

Sadie finds herself in love with a police officer. The police officer in charge of arresting her no less.

This story will make you laugh, cry and even cringe but it is so worth it. The ending is not what I seen coming but oh my did I love it.

I really hope we get more books about these women and how their lives turn out.

What a ride! I didn’t know what to expect from one minute to the next.

When Sadie and the girls in her department are laid off from their job and they can’t find another job, they don’t know what they will do for money. But, when one of the women confesses she has cancer and wants to try marijuana, an idea is set into motion. They will make pot brownies to sell to the other patients going through chemo. Once they start selling, all sorts of craziness starts happening. But, there is one speck of hope, a police officer who can’t seem to get Sadie out of his mind. He will even risk his own life and career to protect her.

This book was serious, funny and romantic all rolled up in one entertaining story. I didn’t want it to end. I could easily see it being made into a tv show. I would say movie, but I wouldn’t want to watch for just a few hours, I want to keep watching the drama unfold for months at a time. If you’re looking for something a little bit different, be sure to pick up this book.

I was given this for my honest review, that said this is really a great read if you want humour, loyalty, fantastic characters and a story that you can believe then this is a book to read. There is Sadie she has been a manager over Mags, Steph and Lexi and they have built up a good work friendship but when they get made redundant they go they separate ways. After a few months they bump into each at the job centre, each of them struggling to find work so they all go for a coffee and catch up.
This is where the story gets hilarious and you can't help but laugh, even out loud, it's great writing to be able to take you into the story and you feel with the characters about where they lives have taken them. It's what they do to get out of their dilemma and their past life what makes this believable, I don't like to do spoilers but will say this is a brilliant book and definitely worth reading, I have enjoyed reading so much and i'm sure you will to.

Dopey Women by Laura Barnard is a standalone romance and is Sadie and Harry’s story.

Dopey Women is like no other book of fiction that I have read before. I had no idea what this title meant but I found out and it makes complete sense now.

Sadie along with several of her co-workers have lost their jobs and they have no-where to turn to. Sadie comes up with the idea to sell marijuana to ladies that are going through chemo.

There are some LOL moments but also the seriousness of selling drugs. They now have a detective that is suspicious along with angry drug dealers. Harry is the detective and she has a love/hate relationship with him. Even at the end of the book it seems that she is always willing to think the worst of Harry. Through some twists and turns there is an HEA.

I loved this original storyline. At least it was original for me. This book held my attention from beginning to the end. I look forward to reading more from this author. 4.5 stars.

This is a story that I didn’t really expect! It is fun and engaging with delightful characters. I really never knew what was going on between Sadie and Harry. I know I had wishful thinking but that doesn’t always work with a book.

This is chock full of wonderful characters! I loved each of them for different reasons. Her “gal pal” group has the most dynamics in it. Plus a wide range of ages which make them interesting. Then there is the Detective along with the drug dealers. I don’t want to forget Sam. He is a nice surprise and helps fill in Sadies backstory.
Then there is the lady of the hour Sadie. She is looking for one thing which leads to a boatload of trouble then she finds something else.

Overall this story is great! I could easily listen to it over and Over. I did listen to this on audio. Mandy Williams is the narrator. She is a first time listen for me and she does wonderful.

* I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own *

This is the story of Sadie and her colleagues who have all been made redundant from their jobs and find themselves at a loss what to do next.
A few months later Sadie is in the job centre and sees her former work colleagues and they decide to go for coffee and catch up. Hearing what each person has gone through from Mags finding she has breast cancer and something to help with her symptoms from chemo.
They decide to join together and start a small venture with marijuana.
This is a hilarious story by Laura Barnard where the ladies find themselves in the middle of a drug war and meeting up with the sexy detective Harry Mackenzie who is investigating the drugs.
Will they carry on with their venture or will the drug war force them to fight or get out of the business forever.

I would like to thank Laura for sending me a copy of this to review in time for the re-release with a brand new cover.

After being made redundant Sadie and her colleagues soon find themselves needing to make some cash QUICK, and what better way to do it than by selling “Weed Brownies” to the other ladies at her friend’s chemo sessions? After all they do believe that Cannabis is meant to help.

But of course it’s not quite that simple, not only are they being investigated by “Detective McRugged”, they have also pissed off the main drug dealer in the area. All they wanted was to get back on their feet.

This novel is full of Laura’s wit and sarcasm, her characters while may come across as bitchy and anti-women, actually seem very real, it would be great to believe that everyone is perfect all the time and nobody ever has negative thoughts about someone else but let’s be honest, we are human, there are times when I am just having “one of THOSE days” and I may end up thinking “oh my god will you just shut up” because a friend or work colleague is talking about something that I have no interest in. Does this make me a bad person? I hope not, it just makes me human.

So yes there may have been a few occasions where I felt like Sadie may be coming across as a little irksome and not entirely likeable, but those are actually my favourite characters any way, they have more depth to them.

I loved the development of the friendships between Sadie and her colleagues- although it was quite amusing to see her slipping back into her “manager” personality despite them being out of work.

Of course I was drawn in by the romance, which of course was a bit of a rollercoaster ride, but I loved the banter between Sadie and Harry.

Much like the other novels by Laura this is balanced out with some very sensitive topics, again much like real life.

I was happy that the end of the novel saw our “Dopey Women” find their way to something better, and still maintaining that friendship that blossomed during their brief stint as drug dealers.

Sadie has worked her way up from living on the streets, and for the past ten years has worked an honest job in order to provide for herself. When her entire department is laid off, while although she freaks out, feels sure that she will bounce back, especially after the way she left after the layoff. Months later, nobody from her department has found other work, and they are all drowning in bills and bad luck. From their bad luck stems an idea to get their bills paid and back on their feet as a group; growing and selling drugs. Through some trials and tribulations, the group eventually gets on their feet and start making a profit, but between the local drug dealer finding out about them in addition to Sadie attracting local cop Harry, the group is doomed from the start. While the story was comical in some parts, it felt like it drug on and got a little redundant and confusing and while the concept was good, to me it fell a little short.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
