Tess Carver was victim to a brutal, ritualistic murder. Strange symbols were cut into her body, which was found in a ring of trees under a dark sky.

The police seem to have the case wrapped up. They’ve imprisoned Gunner Bray, head of the Clayton Society—called a cult by some. The Clayton Society owns the land, and who else but crazy cult members would butcher a woman this way?

But the Clayton Society has money to burn, and they’ve come to blond private detective Ivy Stern for help. They want her to clear Gunner’s name and find the real killer. Ivy takes the case. She’s good with murder, and she’s determined to bring Tess’s killer to justice.

Even if it really is Gunner, after all.

Quite absorbing, and a good follow on from the previous book. If you're looking for ratiocination and intricate puzzles this might not be your thing, but for the record I didn't figure out the mystery early... (Well, OK, I usually don't, because I'm more in for the ride not the puzzle.) I enjoyed the impulsive protagonist and her problems, and her candor. Her relationship with Pike is complicated, and her assistant Brigit really blossoms in this book.

There are a few more typos in this than in the previous book, but otherwise the editing is good... I have the list of things I spotted... (Copy-ditorial nit: The spelling of blond/blonde is not consistent at all in the book. She variously refers to herself as blond or blonde in different places. LOL)

Oh, and I do wish Ivy would drink a more serious beer with some oomph and taste ... Haha.

This Book 2 had some really drawn out parts. It's what we've come to expect as far as character relationships and the basic setting, though. The resolve of the mystery was somewhat easily obtained by Ivy, no mastermind thinking or detective work, just like Book 1. Chambers may not be able to keep doing that in books, it's only forgivable once or twice. Also, the ending has a sad twist.

If you're looking for an airtight case with intricate or layered evidence and suspects, this book is not for you. But if you enjoy noire drama along with great characters, a murder, and a side romance, then enjoy.
