Merek Slatter is the wild card on the Silver Star Ranch in Texas and always has been. He’s blessed with his granddaddy’s love of the ranch yet haunted with chasing that gold buckle eight seconds at a time.
Tensions are high on the ranch when circumstances threaten to take it under. His dad and brothers pressure him to stay home and become an active cowboy on the ranch. However, Merek is addicted to the road and rodeo. He’s home anytime he can be and provides plenty of money to keep the family ranch afloat, but sometimes it takes more than what’s in the bank to protect tradition.
Now home on a three-month break, Merek finds himself all tied up with the new girl in town. She’s quiet and reserved but there’s something about Challis’ green eyes and feisty attitude that makes her irresistible. When he runs into her at a rodeo and catches a glimpse of her on horseback all hopes of leaving her alone flies out the window.
There are several rumors floating around town about her, however that doesn’t stop Merek from going after what he wants. He knows she’s off limits and only full of trouble, but Merek thrives on trouble and adrenaline.
Then the road calls again and it’s time to leave. Eight Seconds Gold Buckles And the high… What will he choose?
USA Today Best Selling Author, HJ Bellus is a small town girl who loves the art of storytelling. When not making readers laugh or cry, she's a part-time livestock wrangler that can be found in the middle of Idaho, shot gunning a beer while listening to some Miranda Lambert on her Beats and rocking out in her boots.
I was excited to start this one. I loved the premise, but it was a a let down.
First the heroine comes off as a b***h. I did not understand where her attitude toward the hero came from before he even said a word to her. There must have been something from their past, but that was not really mentioned until later and I already had a bad impression of the heroine.
Then the way the hero introduces the heroine to his female BEST "friend" from high school annoyed me. At this point in the story, the hero wants the heroine and heroine opened up a little to the hero. The heroine thinks this woman that hangs out with the hero is his girlfriend. I mean the heroine saw the hero and the female "friend" make out. So instead of putting the heroine at ease as to why this blond woman is always hanging around he introduces the tramp like this. Now keep in mind, he wants to kind of make her want him and I think he wants to put her at ease.
"I thought...I thought...I mean, isn't she your girlfriend?" "No, longtime best bud and f**k buddy." (loc 21%)
That whole exchange just felt out of place and why would the heroine want the hero if he is introducing the woman he made out with (and had sex with a few days before) as his f**k buddy?!?! I love drama...I devour it and especially ex or other woman drama, but that whole thing felt weird. A guy does not talk about his conquests or say things like that to a woman he wants to be with.
This may work for you, but it does not work for me. This is my opinion.
You know how some books just take a little bit longer to get through and you can find yourself struggling to finish it but you still want to persevere and finish the story. For me, that was 8 Second Decision by HJ Bellus. This book starts with Merek Slatter returning home from the Rodeo circuit, he is seen as a big shot in town and a bit of a playboy. He goes to the bar with his brother and he is captivated by the new waitress Challis. As girls normally fall over him, he is surprised when Challis rejects him and he responds by being a grade-A jerk. Challis doesn't have time for a relationship as she is busy trying to earn money to win her Dad's ranch back from her evil Stepmother Lola. What Challis doesn't realize is that Merek is having problems at home too as he is trying to help his family save their ranch too as his father has gambled all their money away and is in serious debt. During the novel, the pair get together and have an angsty relationship. They have their ups where they are lovey-dovey and having sex and doing the rodeo circuits together and other moments where they are at each other's throats and not letting the other get close. I really struggled with their relationship as it seemed to be quite a toxic one despite their happy moments. Can the pair learn to work together and put their differences to the side in order to be happy or will they realize that they bring out the worst in each other and are better off friends as their relationship could end them being as toxic as it is? Parts of this book I loved like the rodeo's as my Grandparents were in the Rodeo circuit as well as my Uncle John and as a family we would spend the day watching the Rodeo events near us in New Zealand.
Challis Jones and Merek Slatter have more in common than they think. Both plagued by money problems not of their making, their life is family, rodeo and the seconds on the time clock. When they get together it’s hard to tell if they simply hate each other or if it is just a major case of dislike.
“I’m lost in the tornado of everything Challis Jones and wish she wasn’t such a stubborn jackass.”
As time will tell, it is neither. As they begin working together towards common goals their attraction turns into more than physical.
“We are saving our roots, going to work our asses off, rodeo together, and see where this takes us.”
This is the first book in a series that sees intrigue and danger plague both the Jones and Slatter clans. Merek is a sexy, talented, champion rodeo rider who loves his family and their ranch. The call to rodeo has always been stronger than even his family ties, until now. Painted a manwhore, a label he has a hard time arguing, he is committed to Challis and the mending of his ways.
Committed to the same lifestyle, Challis grew up in rodeo and wears her own champion buckles with pride. There are only a few things in life that ground her so when she loses one, and the others are threatened, her strength is sorely tested.
The two together seemed like oil and water and I wondered at times why they were even together. Did they even like each other let alone love? By the end of the story though these answers were made crystal clear in an emotion-packed journey that reminded me yet again why cowboys rule.
Strong characters and a storyline that has only just begun makes this series a must read on my TBR. I can’t wait for the next Slatter brother story! ~ Diane, 4 stars

It doesn’t take much for me to want to read a cowboy book, and this one had a delicious cover and an intriguing blurb so I was all in…and I didn’t need eight seconds to decide.
Merek Slatter is back in town for three months, determined to help his brothers save the family’s Silver Star Ranch, which has come under fire. He’s not home looking for a girl, but when Challis Jones catches his eye, it’s impossible to walk away from her.
Challis, though, has problems of her own. She’s fiery and she’s a heart-breaker on a horse, and she’s not interested in what Merek is offering. Except he won’t let up. And when it comes time to figure out the problems that plague them both, Challis and Merek have to decide whether to go it alone…or do it together.
This was a really solid start to what could prove to be an excellent series, but a day after finishing it, I am having trouble putting into words why. I didn’t love the book, but I was captivated by it while I was reading. I read it in a night, no interruptions, no distractions and no desire to put it down. But now, I struggle a little to remember why I was so taken with it.
I know I loved Merek – the strong, alpha man that was head-over-heels for Challis and seemingly unafraid of it. And I know that a painful turn of events damn near broke my heart…and absolutely had my heart pitter-pattering as I waited to see what would become of this couple and those they loved.
I had some concerns about the time-lining of it. There were a few jumps that I felt were a little too much – I would have liked some more detail and time spent on things that were just passed over, but I won’t deny that in skipping them, H.J. Bellus was able to concentrate more on Merek and Challis and their burgeoning relationship. Which is a good thing, no doubt.
In a similar way, I was worried about the seemingly quick ending, but in the time that’s passed since I finished, it’s become clear to me that if I continue with this series – and I definitely want to – I will get more from this couple. Most likely indirectly, as I would imagine the books to come will focus on Merek’s uniquely named brothers, Marvel and Maverik. And that’s okay. I liked them both as characters and Maverik’s back story, in particular, has peaked my interest.
All in all, 8 Second Decision was a really fun, somewhat sexy and rather absorbing first book in the Silver Star Ranch series. If it took me less than eight seconds to choose this one to read, then book two will be a no-brainer! ~ Beth, 3.5 stars
"Chasing my dreams eight seconds at a time on the road."
Hot Cowboys. Fast-paced Rodeos. True family bonds.
This book has it all! Right from the start, you get a sense of the dynamic between the Slatter brothers.
Merek Slatter lives for the rodeo. The thrills, the chases, the gold buckles, everything. But he's about to meet his biggest challenge yet.
"My name is Challis and I'll break it to you easy. You don't stand a chance with me, Champ."
Challis Jones has been given a bad hand in the past several months, and she's not going to let some cowboy (even if she can't seem to look away from him) stand in her way of geting what she wants.
Along side of her best friend and champion horse, Teebaby, she has everything she needs...or so she thought. It seems even she can't resist the charm of a Slatter.
"I see you've kissed a cowboy a time or two." "Maybe. Or just watch a lot of western movies." "Which is it , Challis?" "Shut up and kiss me, Champ."
I enjoyed reading Merek and Challis' story so much! This wasn't just a "two people meet, fall in love, live happily ever after" story. This is a story of acceptance, love, forgiveness, loyalty, and family.
There were moments in this book where I couldn't stop the tears from clouding my eyes. Emotions were on high as these two, strong people are shown that even the bravest have weaknesses.
"I just want to forget it all, Merek, all of it. Why can't I just move on? Go down the road and rodeo, leaving behind everything." "Because it's your roots and you never leave those. We have wild hearts, but always know where home is."
This was a wonderful start to this series and I can't wait to read more about this family!
These Slatter brothers are a force to be reckoned with and I'm ready for the challenge;) HJ Bellus has proven once again that she can write anything! Love this so hard!!!
"Our table my be tiny, but our hearts and passion are fierce. We are the Slatters."
**ARC given by author in exchange for honest review**
What woman wouldn't love a cowboy? Certainly not me!! Especially if I was noticed by one ...but trying to blow him off when all he can do is stare at you even though at times he is acting like a jerk ...but the moment he hears and finds out what is going on and what you are trying to accomplish doesn't give you a chance to turn him down ....even though deep down you want to and you try to but in the end it comes down to family and what you believe in...... but what you don't realize is that in the process you have changed his thinking as well and he can't be without you like he is drawn to you no matter where you go ....no matter what you do.... hes there protecting you.......... I absolutely loveed this and I can't wait to read more!!!
It is very hard to win me over with Western Romances because they are a passion of mine and the storyline and cockiness of the cowboy has to be just right. HJ Bellus has done it with this romance. You get everything the produces a wonderfully developed cowboy romance; one-liners, cockiness, ranching, sabotage, love, defeat, heartbreak, and family bonds. I have been in a search for something to quench my yearning thirsty for the ranch and this did it.
Sattle up and hold on for the best 8 seconds of your life. Even stick around for the whiskey and bond of a family of 5 while they battle through the destruction haters are throwing their way.
Take a ride on the wild side and dive into this sexy read. Merek was rodeo playboy until he ran into Challis. The cowgirl who was tough as nails. They fought hard and loved harder. Get roped into this hot steamy read and you won't regret it.
Great read! Merek Slatter gold buckle bronc rider in the rodeo circuit and Challis Johnson champion Barrel racer fight the laws is attraction. Both have baggage and face challenges with a specific family member. Love prevails when tragedy strikes . HEA
A fun quick romantic read. I enjoyed reading about Merek and Challis. A great couple and good match even though they don't know it. This book has a little mystery and we will have to read book #2 for some answers. I'm looking forward to reading more from this Author.
I give 8 Second Decision 4 stars for its good story and great characters. I would recommend this book to Adults.
I was gifted a copy of this amazing book in exchange for an honest review. I am happy to say it was awesome. I would have felt bad if I had to slam it. I was kind of (actually still am ) clueless about the rodeo world. Thankfully the author took pity on me and explained things well enough that I might actually be able to watch a rodeo and understand what is going on. And if the guys are have as gorgeous as the characters in this book I might just follow the circuit. I was roped into 8 Second Decision from page one. There was just something about Merek and Challis that I couldn't get enough of. They both had their issues. They were both dealt a bad hand. Financial issues plague them both. I have to admit I found it rather thrilling to read about more than one serious issue, one crisis (want to know what they are you have to grab the book. You won't be disappointed). Challis and Merek didn't think much of each other when they met. Of course that didn't stop the attraction. Merek is home after months on of being on the road to a rodeo. Sitting in the bar with his brothers, he sees Challis waiting tables and calls her over. There first contact does not go well for Merek. Smooth Moves didn't last 8 seconds. Challis laughs in his face giving his brothers great pleasure. Challis has a feistiness to her that had me laughing almost as hard as she was after shutting down Merek again and again. Challis should be rodeoing for a living just like Merek. Instead she is pushing beer. Her attitude about life has her butting heads with Merek until they meet on common ground--a rodeo. They both want the same thing, to win and collect the purse. When she is at her lowest he is there to pick up the pieces. He gives her what she needs, He is mart enough not to take what he wants. Who knew he could be such a gentleman? Not me. Captivated doesn't begin to explain how I felt about the book. It held my interest. I cheered them on in the arena and in bedroom. Challis is just so cute at times and then others she is TNT. Merek plays the tough guy and then he says something so beautiful he has me and Challis swooning. I was so engrossed in the book. I didn't see the end coming and when it came I jumped on Amazon and purchased Maverick's book. I will not be deterred.
I really liked this book a lot:) Now, I am not a huge countryish/cowboy type romance reader BUT I felt like something different and I saw this on FB and said to myself, what the heck, and I am glad I did:)
Merek and Challis were good characters. Now let's talk Challis, I liked her and disliked her at the same time, lol. I found her a bit too crass at the beginning, I get she has pride BUT there's a way to talk to people and the way she communictated was not what I like to read about especially from my heroine of a story. Yes, she did get better BUT even towards the end of the story she reverted back to her old self and the way she treated Merek was a big fat no and big turn-off at one point I could have smacked her silly.... But all in all, I liked her. Now Merek, oh my, I LOVED him and the way he loved and cared for Challis I mean, what a guy:) He was a total turn-on:)
The story was a nice quick read that was fairly low on angst and drama and yet it did keep you interested from start to finish! I truly hope I get to see more of these 2 in the future books of his brothers! I do look forward to reading more about this group in the future!
YES! I loved this book! Okay so I'll just get to the meat of it. At first you feel like Merek is pretty much an ass and its really hard to give him a chance. He comes off as super arrogant. But as the story goes on and the relationship develops with Challis you get to see a different side of him and he absolutely redeems himself. Challis is a bit of a mystery at first because she has so many conflicting emotions going on, but don't worry, it all becomes clear and you love her vulnerability despite the tough cowgirl exterior. Thats all the details you get because nobody likes spoilers and I can't control myself. Aside from the story, the characters are very engaging as it the story line. You can't help but keep reading. I like how the story line develops and builds at just the right pace. There's not a ton of angst and waffling bogging it down. Gotta say, this is probably in a tie for my favorite HJ Bellus book, alongside Miles and That Girl To sum up, I am absolutely stoked about this new series and I can't wait for Maverik's story next! I'd better be beta reading that Heidi!
I am a huge H.J Bellus fan!! When I saw this new series I knew I had to read it. As always H.J spins a story that captures your attention and keeps you wanting more. This is the first Rodeo book I have ever read and must admit that I am now hooked. I loved Challis and Merek. Challis is a tough character who comes off as unapproachable. She does this on purpose to keep others away because she has her own problems to deal with and doesn't have time to deal with cocky cowboys. Merek is the ultimate cocky cowboy. His love for the rodeo and his families ranch is what keeps him going. He is good and he knows it, but he has his own problems to deal with as well and doesn't have the patients to deal with a woman who wants nothing to do with him or anyone else. I love how this story unfolds and the relationships that form. I cannot wait to read the next book and find out more about the Slatter brothers from the Silver Star Ranch.
I enjoyed the setting a lot and the story had potential with lots of action thrown in. There was always something happening and the characters weren't standing still for long, or there was a bit of a time skip, which made for good reading.
However, the main characters were far too volatile for my taste. The female MC was supposedly this tough cowgirl who rarely cried and didn't take shit from anyone, but she came across as the contrary on far too many occasions.
Besides, the way they talked to each other was over the top a lot of the times. The name calling, the shouting, the explosive reactions. Don't get me wrong, it's all part of some personalities and some relationships, but I found it overdone in this book and the cursing often seemed forced and didn't fit into the sentence structure at all.
This is a story of a cocky cowboy and the tough woman who pretends to want nothing to do with him. Merek loves his family’s ranch and the rodeo. He has some issues to work out and has little patience to deal with Challis when she shows up. Challis is tough. She’s also full of issues and presents herself as unapproachable at the beginning. She’s trying to keep others at bay and this just made me enjoy their relationship and how it moved along, so much more. I didn’t find much angst in the story, yet I was interested and enjoyed it from beginning to end. The side characters were also interesting and I want to know more about them as well.
Merek is cocky and seriously self confident, “two wild l have crashed together, boys, and I’m going to make her mine. Just watch me.”I pat them both on the back and walk out into the Texas sun feeling happier than I’ve ever felt." Challis disoriented a night after drinking is funny, “my stud.” I pat his abs again. I roll up on my elbow and stare down at my guy and then realize I’m naked. “Um, where are my clothes?” I really enjoyed this book I'm thinking I'm going to love this series.
8 Second Decision is the first book in the Silver Star Ranch series by HJ Bellus. This book had me hooked from page one. The storyline was spot on with tons of twists and turns that it had me hooked from beginning to end. The characters were fabulous and had depth, emotion, and a ton of chemistry. I can't wait for the next book in this series and more by HJ Bellus!!
Merek Slatter was a hot shot on the rodeo circuit, loving his life on the go and not having responsibilities of the ranch. Then he comes home to find out just whats been happening while he has been gone. His Daddy had made their Ranch Debt ridden from his gambling and on the edge of losing it all. His brothers have been around trying to set things straight. He is home now and in for the fight with his brothers to set them and their grand daddies ranch free. Challis has been a cowgirl all her life. It was always just her and her father when she was growing up because her Momma left them at the hospital after she was born. Being a girl her father never let her use that as an excuse, she could do just as good as any man. Then as a young girl her father married. A woman Challis never grew to like, she called her the Golddigger. When her Daddy passed away, Challis was left with the task of fighting for her father's Ranch. Her step mother wanted money, leaving Challis to try and find a way to pay her off to get her fathers ranch back. One night while working the good looking Merek walks into the bar where she works and sparks fly but she is determined that she has enough on her plate and doesn't need distractions. Hmmm maybe just one distraction more...
H.J Bellus strikes again with another brilliant read! Although very different from her usual settings, Merek & Challis take us on the proverbial ride of our lives.
I loved the Slatter brothers so damn much but cocky cowboy Merek from Silver Star Ranch, literally stole my heart. He's a bad boy. Egotistical & Extremely delicious!!! My heart bled for Challis. She hasn't had it easy. She's weathered enough storms in her young years and this in turn causes her to be very stubborn and prideful. Together they embark on a adventure based on lust, passion & love. They both have decisions and choices to make.
This book is a sexy Western & I have to say I loved every minute of it!!!!!! I cannot wait for the next installment.
H.J. Bellus you my dear are a literary genius. ~Joanna, 5 stars

This is the second book I've read by HJ Bellus and by God did she do it again. I am falling completely in love with the way she writes, her stories, the way the characters come about, even the life lessons you pick up from them. I have not a clue when it comes to rodeos, but this book got me hooked—more so because it's also about the bad boy of the rodeo and the daughter of a legend clashing and coming together.
Challis Jones has been taught by her dad to be a tough as nails cowgirl. She learned to handle everything and can almost do everything in a ranch with her eyes closed. But all of that changed the day her dad died. She's almost lost everything, except for her best friend, the horse her daddy gave her, Teebaby. And such a special and strong tandem they are. They barrel through rodeos and set records. That's what keeps Challis going. She's feisty and never lets anyone see through her. With her stepmother threatening to sell her only other memento of her dad, their ranch, Challis is busting her ass working to get all the money she needs to pay her evil stepmother and win her father's ranch back.
Merek Slatter is the cocky bad boy of the rodeo. He finds his high every time he's winning his buckles and gains glory from his victories. He has everything at the palm of his hands. He can have anything and anyone he wants anytime, but the moment his eyes find the luminous green eyes of Challis, he knows his life is about to change. Although they've fought tooth and nail, and has never seen eye to eye the first time they met, Merek has be knocked on his ass by the feisty cowgirl. He has found his match in her and he'd do his damn best to win her over and give everything he has to her.
I love how this is part of a series—I cannot wait to know more about the Slatters especially how they played their roles in being Challis's new family. You will be left hanging with a twist going unresolved, but it won't leave you raging and aching for the next book. It ends on a high and happy note and I'm more than okay with that. This book will enlighten you about love and loss, acceptance and forgiveness, passion and courage. It will make you realize that in a relationship, when one is suffering, the other can't just give up and let go when pushed away, but become the anchor and just hold on. Fight with everything you have because in the end, all will eventually be okay. And this is what I loved the most about Merek Slatter. I can't wait to see what the oldest Slatter brother has in store for us! ~Renery, 4 stars

Addicted to life on the road and an active participant of the rodeo we meet Texas’s pride and joy, Merek Slatter. He has an aura that will have women swooning over him, a personality that can either frustrate you or fall for him hard and has won the hearts of many fans from his bareback winning rides. He catches sight of the new woman in town and is tenacious to make her known to him.
The horseback rider, Challis Jones has come back to town and she is one tough cookie to not mess with. She has returned for one main reason and is determined to not let anyone or anything get in her way. Afraid to get too close and/or to open up she prefers to keep her personal life to herself (with the exception of her Aunt and Uncle) regardless of the gossip that are being said about her.
I am not really familiar with life on the ranch or the rodeo but HJ Bellus still gets me hook on her characters and continues to impress me with her words. The connection between Marek and Challis was one that had me wide eyed and concerned whenever they were facing things apart and or together and although they also had heated moments they were not always hearts and flowers feels which causes me to flinch when it comes to their actions. This book was not only about the connection between two opposite people with a growing attraction, it entailed some mystery and suspense aspect to the story while teaching us the true meaning of family. ~Cristina, 4 stars
Sometimes a gal just needs a good cowboy book to indulge in. 8 Second Decision sure fit the bill.
You get your fill of a hot sexy cowboy, a sassy heroine & a bit of mystery thrown in.
Merek Slatter has always been addicted to the high of the rodeo but he now has his eyes set on a new kind of high in the form of a green eyed Challis Jones. Challis has her heartbroken when he Daddy passed and the last thing she needs is a cocky cowboy wiggling his way under her skin. The high for these two will take them soaring but when they come down will they go lower than before?
It shows the meaning of true love and the true meaning of family. The meaning of true grit, trust, having each other's 6s (backs) that it doesn't matter if your male or female you are just as capable as the other. Shows how you should stand and fight for what you love cherish and dreams come true hold on to your morals and the ones that are your world tight don't let good things that you care for slip through your fingers
Finding love when you least expect it is the overall meaning to this story. Merek and Challis are both behind the eight ball with the debt and believe that the rodeo is the only way to get the funding. But with close quarters comes a spark that neither one of them saw coming. Can you find love with so much on your shoulders? With a solid storyline and characters that were the real deal this was a great read.
Is there anything hotter then a sexy cowboy. Only one being put in his place by a strong cowgirl. The brothers of silver star ranch are in for a fight to keep their granddad's ranch. Challis is fighting to get her father's ranch from her evil stepmother. If they all work together they can take on anything.
I loved this book! It grabs you from the opening and the laughs and sass between our couple and the brothers is just so funny and natural. There is also a lot of heart and some sad times too just to balance it out. A great read I would recommend. Please note that there are some unanswered questions lingering to be picked up in the next book.
Mystery, love, anger, and happiness. All in this story.
These two had some ups and downs. Wish you would have told us the mystery person in this book. Great writing and looking forward to reading the next book.
HJ Bellus is either a hit or a miss for me and this one was mostly a miss. There wasn't any real character development and the plot was all over the place.
I didn't really feel the connection between the characters other than physical. Also, a bit tooooo country for my taste. Maybe that was the issue.
Either way, I think I will skip the rest of this series.
Such passion. So Well written. And very likable characters. I felt the rodeo. I wanted to be there. Great story but my heart almost broke wide open, so I can’t wait to read more in the next book.
