Ian Welch got in touch with me and asked if I would read and review one of his books. I would like to thank him for his kindness of choosing me to do this for him.

The story is set just after the second world war in Portsmouth, England.
The Cranston Family are struggling to survive on little money.

Edward - Works at the wharf, drinks to much and doesn't seem to care to much for his family. Until something happens that turns his life around and tries his hardest to provide for his family.

Isobel - Is the super glue that keeps the family on the straight and narrow. She has incredible strength no matter what life throws at her. This story is mainly about her. Her joys and sorrows and the people she meets along the way.

Frank - has some trouble at school, and strays as a young lad until Isobel sorts him out.
Phoebe - She is very much like her mum.
Abby - A very chatty child. I did feel her five year old voice felt more like a 7 year old. She also runs into trouble as a young woman until her mum steps in.

Selwyn and Eleanor - very well off couple who get to know Abby and Isobel and make life long friends. They help Isobel out where ever they can.

I judge a book by the cover and this book doesn't call to me. However the story inside is well worth the read. There is family life and heartache, good friends and family to share the good times and bad. There is a lot in this story and it will keep you reading to the very end.
