Faith loves orchids. Her favorite time of year is when several are blooming. Pictures can be seen at her FaceBook page. And yes, she collects bones and skulls. Boston 1770. Two characters from two authors meet a couple of months after a notorious pre-revolutionary incident.
A young Everhart witch (a well known name in the Yellowrock's 'verse) is confronted with a man hired to recover a stolen brooch , the man is Ethan Kaille, a conjurer and thieftaker.
This is the beginning of what appears to be a conspiracy, family secrets and a world unknown in other aspects for the protagonists.
This story seems to be much longer for how short it is.
I didn't know anything about DB Jackson before this but I'm a Faith Hunter fan, but it is a nice introduction.
TOO SHORT! This was an exceptional story and to be so drawn into the two main characters lives so quickly speaks of exceptional writing skills which should also be no surprise considering who wrote this story.
The story revolves around Hannah Everhart (took me a minute to remember where I heard that name before and it was in the world of Jane Yellowrock) and the thieftaker Kaille who needs to retrieve something that Hannah needs to keep. The story moves effortlessly along while keeping the reader engaged with the story as the pace of things happening picks up as it progresses.
Bottom Line: I can't say too much or it would be a spoiler for such a short story but I feel like I just finished a novella twice the size of this one and left me wanting much more. Rating short works is always a bit tricky but this one is easy since it never let you down and made you feel you had read a much longer work. 5 Stars easy and wish it had been 10 times longer, this pairing has great possibilities.
A very short story putting a distant ancestor of Molly Everheart Trueblood from Faith Hunters Jane Yellowrock world into D.B. Jackson's pre-Revolution Thrieftaker Boston. Ethan Kaille is running down Hannah Everheart who has stolen a valuable sapphire broach. Little does he know, she needs the broach to use in a magical working that will save the life of none other than Sam Adams.
This short story features Hannah Everhart, an ancestor of Jane Yellowrock’s witch best friend, as well as D.B. Jackson’s character Ethan Kaille, a conjurer and thieftaker. Hannah has stolen a jewel that she needs to complete a magical working against an evil that has arrived in Boston, and Ethan is hired to find the thief of the jewel and recover it. Once these two get to know each other, they decide to work together to fight the evil being and save a very important revolutionary figure. Although a bit short, I liked the glimpse into the past and the story was wrapped up nicely, leaving room for more adventures for these two in the future.
Faith Hunter's Jane Yellowrock series is among one of my favorite UF series to date. That's not to say I believe everything Faith Hunter publishes is to my liking. I've never read anything from the author D.B. Jackson prior to this short.
The book was well written, nothing about this book felt disjointed. If this is any indication of how these two authors mesh i'd declare this collaboration a success, the authors work joined seamlessly. So congrats to D.B. Jackson & Faith Hunter on that front. The editing was also flawless.
48 pages is not long enough to develop a strong opinion on Water Witch. If I was asked to describe my feelings towards Water Witch I'd say "MEH". I don't feel the need to explore the world in which Water Witch exist. I should confess I'm not a fan of historical fiction & this series takes place in the 1700's. Think British Crown /Colonies etc. If that type of genre interest you the first book in the Thieftakers Chronicles is Thieftaker (The Thieftaker Chronicles Book 1) by D. B. Jackson.
No I wouldn't recommend this book. No I will not continue the series. I expected UF & got Historical Fiction. Not my cup a tea. I rate this book an extreamly generous 3 stars.

I'll give anything by Faith Hunter a chance and I wasn't disappointed in this short story. This is a nice fasts read that introduces an interesting new world that combines figures from Americas history and magic. I would definitely buy another book or short story set in this world.
Anyway. I thought a short by one of my favorite authors would be the right thing when I couldn't sleep and the head was all over the place. It was, and it wasn't. For, this book didn't feel like it was written by Faith Hunter. It felt more like the other author borrowed aspects of Hunter's world and wrote a story in his own world with it. Which wasn't bad, just not what I was hoping for.
The writing was a bit splotchy, with missing words here and there. On top of that, the story was slow and not all that interesting. Despite being so short, I found myself bored with all the backstory and worldbuilding, and actually not getting to know what the main plot was before at least halfway through, which is too late, I think.
Don't think I'll be reading more by this author, as I wasn't much fan of his character or the world he created, unfortunatly.
Bought as part of the Jordancon 2020 Reading Challenge - "A book by the guest of honor".
Where the Thieftaker crosses the Everhart world, magic happens. I have enjoyed books by both D.B. Jackson and Faith Hunter; this short story is their first corroboration and hopefully not the last. Mr. Jackson's tendency toward third-person and Ms. Hunters preference of writing first-person mix perfectly, creating a nuisanced story. If you like reading historical urban fantasy, this is one of the best out there. Water Witch works great for fans familiar with either of the authors, or both, or as a stand-alone.
For an hour, the short story transported me to a foggy pre-revolutionary war Boston. There a teenager seeks to stop an evil, and Ethan Kaille intervenes to help her when their paths cross. Witch and Conjurer. The previous worldbuilding of the Thieftaker world mixes perfectly with Jane Yellowrock's witch magic.
great story far too short , i was struck by the similarity to hp lovecraftscdescriptions of this area and thevsimilsrity betwwen thectwo and thoughtbhow theirvtwo stories could dovetail ie charles dexter ward meets thecwaterwitch, now doescthiscstory continue anywhere. oh andci loved fsith hunterscjanevyellowrock series andcwishbtherewere more than thirteen books.
I love Faith Hunter's Jane Yellowrock series & while I enjoyed the book, this book is more of a short story/novella. It's about a girl in the 1600's who has water magic & she is an EverHeart witch (which is a descendant of Jane's BFF who is an earth witch) the story doesn't really have anything 2 do w/the Yellowrock mythos. Great read but too short, imho. Hope this helps!
I love Faith Hunter's writing (own all her novels) and settled down to a great read and perhaps the beginning of a new series, but after paying $7.50 and loving the introductory pages, imagine my surprise that that's all there were: a couple of chapters. Shame on Amazon and on Hunter for posting and selling a non-book.
Just a glimpse into the Everhart’s past, leaving me wishing for more. I’d love to see a spin-off series about this family. As usual, well written and fast moving.
I just came off a long binge of Faith Hunter novels and was in withdrawal. Loved going back in time to Everhart ancestors. Would totally read a full novel series with these two “partners.”
Very enjoyable short story of Everheart Witch ancestors. Hope more are to come. Makes me wonder and hope The Everheart family missed the Witch trials and moved to make America better.
I was hesitant at first, but this story offers an intriguing insight into the history of the Everhearts as well as the evolution of magical law and creatures in the Yellowrock series.
