What if the life you know is only one of the lives you could have lived?

Christopher Cole has the life many people dream of.

A loving wife. Two children. A life that should feel complete.

Yet something feels out of reach. A quiet certainty that he was meant for more. That somewhere along the way, he became a version of himself he never intended to be.

Then, in a single devastating moment, everything changes.

When Christopher wakes after a car accident, he finds himself somewhere unexpected: a reality where the accident never happened and his life has taken a different path.

But the life he remembers has been erased.

Determined to find his way back, Christopher searches for answers in a reality that feels both familiar and impossible. But the deeper he goes, the more he begins to question everything he thought he knew about his life, his memories, and reality itself.

All the while, the life he is fighting to return to may no longer be waiting for him.
A gripping story of love, loss and impossible choices, The Second Thread asks:

If you were given the chance to live the life you thought you wanted, would you risk losing the one you already had?

Hi, I'm Ashley, although you'll find my books under A. E. Ward.

I write stories about ordinary people finding themselves in decidedly unordinary situations, usually involving impossible choices, questionable amounts of science, and at least a little existential crisis.

My debut novel, The Second Thread: A Life Refracted, began with a question I couldn't stop thinking about: what if the life you know is only one of the lives you could have lived?

When I'm not disappearing down research rabbit holes or wondering whether I've accidentally broken the laws of physics, I'm a teacher, mum of three boys, owner of two springer spaniels, and permanently surrounded by half-finished cups of tea in Northumberland.

I love stories that leave you thinking about them long after you've finished reading — and that's exactly the kind of story I hope to write.

The Second Thread is unlike anything else I’ve read this year. It didn’t just give me a story to follow; it gave me an idea to sit with.

The premise was one of the things that initially drew me in: the possibility of there being more than one version of our lives, different threads and different outcomes. Even the title intrigued me before I’d started reading, and the philosophical questions behind the story ended up being one of my favourite things about it.

Christopher was a character who had me up and down throughout. There were choices he made that genuinely made me fall out with him for a while, particularly in the way he sometimes projected his own troubles onto the people who loved him. But I was still emotionally invested in what happened to him.

I also really felt for his brother, Danny. His personality, love and loyalty came through beautifully, even when his own worries and experiences weren’t necessarily receiving the same concern. Their family relationship was lovely to read. Emily’s relationship with her sons, and the way she continued to carry Christopher in both her heart and memory, was another part of the story I found particularly touching.

A. E. Ward does a brilliant job of making both worlds and both versions of life feel tangible and plausible. I was particularly impressed by how much research had clearly gone into the theories behind the story. The exploration of thread theory, timelines and the science and philosophy surrounding what Christopher is experiencing gave me so much to think about, although, I’ll admit there were a few scientific terms that sent me straight to Google!

The pacing felt balanced. It wasn’t slow, but it wasn’t rushing towards its destination either. There is a literary, almost poetic quality to some of the description. Occasionally I felt certain moments could have had a sharper impact with a little less description around them, but it never took away from my enjoyment of the story.

And then I reached the final few chapters.

From the deprivation tank onwards, I was fully invested and couldn’t put it down. As the possibility of Christopher getting back to his original thread became more real, the stakes rose with it. I genuinely didn’t know whether his plan was going to work. I’d wondered whether he might eventually accept his new fate, particularly after his first failed attempt, so the direction the story ultimately took surprised me.

Then came that ending.

Rather than neatly answering everything, it left me with even more questions. What exactly happened? Was his son dreaming? Did Christopher actually make it? And, perhaps most importantly… are we getting a second book?!

I love when an ending does that. It leaves enough room for interpretation that you’re still trying to work it out after you’ve closed the book.

Underneath the science and its central premise, I think The Second Thread asks some fascinating questions about life, choice and consequence. If we were given another chance at life while retaining the memories of the one we’d already lived, would we actually take it? Would knowing what we’d lost make another life feel like a gift, or would it make us appreciate the one we already had?

That’s where this book really tickled my brain.

If you enjoy stories that play with reality and possibility the kind of concepts explored in The Butterfly Effect, Project Hail Mary or Limitless I think there’s a lot here to enjoy.

For me, The Second Thread was a comfortable yet thought-provoking read that explored life and possibility through a very specific lens. I enjoyed the story while I was inside it, but it’s the possibilities it left behind that I’ll keep thinking about.

Thank you to A. E. Ward for providing me with an ARC. This review reflects my own reading experience and opinions.

Absolutely unputdownable.
So, okay, why?
The style is gooood. I heard it when he walked into the busy streets. I cried with her during the bike scene. I was the brother during the scientific explanations. I experienced the sadness, the despair, the grief, the angst.
There is a small prequel that is very interesting to read before to have a "ahah!" moment around the middle of the book. Check out her newsletter for that.
There is a love story but this is not the main topic. This is science fiction. Its about family, about belonging, about identity, about loss.
You don't need a doctorate in science to understand ;)
The ending is mindblowing.
Read it.

This book was fantastic. The depth of living and death and what could happen is mind blowing. It is a must read especially if you are wondering about life threads ,time lines we follow. I have told so many people to just read it and maybe some of there questions they have can be answered.

"The Second Thread" is a speculative psychological thriller that asks the deep questions, explores undiscovered realities, and has you not just wondering IF something is possible, but also believing that it just may BE possible. It also explores the many facets of grief experienced by the loss of various familial relationships, while providing an entirely plausible ability to maintain a tenuous connection with loved ones that hints at an explanation which may bring peace or closure to some.

The level of scientific detail speaks to A. E. Ward's meticulous research skills and pursuit of academic and literary excellence. Subsequent perusals of this book reveals additional layers and complexities which adds to the story and expands the realms of possibilities.

For a debut novel, A. E. Ward has done an amazing job of creating a world of intrigue and psychological exploration. This book is an absolute must read for anyone who enjoys pondering the mysteries of life! A. E. Ward is definitely an author to keep an eye out for in the future!!!!

Thought-provoking, clever and full of heart.

⭐⭐⭐⭐½

I really enjoyed The Second Thread. At its heart, this is a brilliant story about love, loss, the choices we make and that fascinating question of what our lives might have looked like if we'd taken a different path.

The characters were excellent and, for me, they were what really carried the book. I became invested in Christopher's story and genuinely wanted to know where it was going.

Some of the physics and explanations around how everything worked were a little difficult to follow at times, and I felt they occasionally distracted from what was an otherwise very compelling story. That's probably personal preference, though, and readers who enjoy the science behind these concepts may love that aspect.

The ending was slightly sharper than I would personally have liked — I wanted just a little more time with it — but the story underneath it all was excellent. Thought-provoking, clever and full of heart.

4.5 stars from me. Definitely worth reading. Rounded up to 5 ☆ as Amazon doesn't allow 1/2 ☆ 💜

I finished The Second Thread by A.E. Ward with one thought repeating in my head: What if?

As a beta reader, I had the privilege of experiencing this speculative fiction story before publication, and I absolutely loved the way A.E. Ward threaded everything together. The story kept me questioning, second-guessing and wondering what could happen next, and I simply couldn’t put it down.

What I loved most was how thought-provoking it became beyond the story itself. It made me reflect on choices, consequences and the endless possibilities that can come from a single decision.

I won’t say more because this is a story best experienced without spoilers.

The main character also stayed with me beyond the pages, inspiring me to create my own artwork, which made my connection to the story even more special.

A beautifully threaded, thought-provoking story that stayed with me.

The Second Thread releases September 8, 2026.

I really enjoyed this book. 4.5 stars!

The first part of the story was more literary than the second part, but I experienced that as a good thing because the opening used more sophisticated prose and elaborate descriptions of the environment, which isn't really my taste.

The second part of the book was no less sophisticated, as that's where the deeper physics themes were introduced, but—thank God—they were written in far more accessible language.

I still had to reread bits, but not because of the prose. Rather, I was trying to grasp the concepts and, more than that, my brain kept running away with them, dragging me into alternate possibilities [pun not intended!] as the physics was explained. For me, the book didn't so much answer the "what if?" question as raise more and different "what ifs" as I read, and that really intrigued me.

Whether you're into science or more speculative ideas, this is the book for you!

I was lucky enough to be selected by the author AE Ward to be a beta reader for this book, The Second Thread. Wow, does this book make you think?

Through the pages of The Second Thread we meet Christopher and his life. Is this the life he dreamed of? What might have been if he had chosen a different path?
Christopher, due to injury, gets to explore a second alternative life to live. But, it's at the expense of his comfortable old life which no longer exists.

Grief, love, loss and family are all major themes in this riveting book. A touching story that makes you think yourself, what if that happened to me?

The Second Thread is a unique book as it makes the reader question their own lives. This book is enthralling and captivating and will astound and impress readers alike. AE Ward's debut is stunning. It's 5 out of 5 from me.

Really enjoyed The Second Thread by E.A. Ward. It’s definitely one that makes you think! Some parts were a little confusing for me, especially towards the ending, but I actually think that added to the whole “what is real?” feeling of the book.

The characters were strong and I found myself really invested in them. You can also tell the author has done a lot of research — the science parts were really detailed and added another layer to the story.

The biggest thing the book left me thinking about was déjà vu… is déjà vu actually déjà vu, or could it be remembering a different thread? 🤯

Definitely a thought-provoking read and one I’d recommend. Although I’m now left wondering… is there going to be another book?! Because that ending definitely left me with questions! ⭐⭐⭐⭐

5/5 ⭐️

Captivating. I genuinely could not put this book down, total binge read (from
about 18:00 - now! )

The Second Thread is emotionally raw, beautifully conceptualised, scientifically fascinating and utterly heartbreaking. There were moments that felt so relatable, drawing you into the characters’ lives until you find yourself desperately rooting for multiple possibilities.

You want things to “work out” whichever way they go, yet you can’t help feeling heartbroken by all the possible outcomes. Because no matter which path is taken, or which thread - someone is going to face unimaginable loss.

A book as beautiful as it is sad, it really is a thought-provoking story…I think it will stay with me for a while. I would highly recommend this book.

A.E. Ward's debut is an utterly compelling novel on alternate realities / parallel lives that blends scientific realism with quiet but devastating emotions. It’s thoughtful, human, and introspective, and will stay with you and leave you wondering after the final page.

It is speculative, yes, but is rooted in relationships, memory, and questions about identity. A beautifully crafted debut novel - you will love it if you enjoy character‑led stories with a touch of sci fi.

I found it very difficult to put down, and was very invested in the characters (particularly the MMC Christopher).

It's just a little bit different to everything else I've read, and I can't recommend it enough.

I was lucky enough to be one of the few people chosen to check out the advanced reader copy of this amazing book!!! I love that it touched on a very technical subject - quantum physics / mechanics - yet it didn't feel difficult to digest. The was VERY thought provoking, yet enjoyable and easy to take in! It felt magical and mysterious from start to finish. I couldnt wait to finish it - so pages just kept turning!!! I love the overlapping stories between the characters and I love how the author weaved everything together. Highly recommend.

4 Slow Blinks. I was lucky to be a Beta reader for @aeward_official and The Second Thread. Overall great concept and had us googling Quantum Echo, body dies but mind moves to next thread, and provides a realistic “after-life” where we can continue to be worshipped appropriately. The reveal of the Marcus Hale in the first thread was really well done, but explaining the thread theory was really confusing and still not sure we get it. Good debut and look forward to the next thread!
