This is the first solo-written book by Taylor Henderson I've read, and I must say...I really enjoyed it! This book had me laughing so hard at some points, and the characterization was brilliant. I loved Violet - she's this awesome mixture of funny, witty, tough, vulnerable, mature, and innocent all at once. Her character was really genuine, like someone I'd be friends with in real life. I enjoyed Lena too. She was the ultimate sidekick with some secrets of her very own, and at times she had me laughing as hard as Violet's character. I would love to see a book just about Lena! Even Brianna had her funny moments, but all in all, she drove me crazy and I was glad when Violet plotted her revenge.
This is such an enjoyable read and I recommend it for teens and adults. The writing is good and the story flows so well. Henderson has mastered the art of showing instead of telling, and her storytelling abilities are fantastic! Most of all, her characters are the best part. They are all so well rounded and because of that, I was totally hooked to the story! Great read!
I can't wait to read book 2 of the Sweet Secrets series!

Better than Revenge is full of high school drama at its best. Violet was unfortunate enough to live next door to her number one bully and drama queen Brianna. For years Brianna has done things to make Vi’s life miserable and through it all Vi just kept getting stronger and more independent in her life. The final straw was when Blake, Vi’s sexy boyfriend and Lena, her newly found best friend, was drawn into a scandal of lies and blackmail. It was time for revenge because drama queen and her little trolls that follow her around have done enough damage to deserve some payback.
Now the plan was brilliant and I have to give kudos to the author for thinking this up, but in the midst of all the revenge, Violet’s heart was still breaking over what she had discovered. There is also a lot of angst among the characters families that draw these teens together against their will, so the side action is interesting as well. Violets mother was a riot, she is so crazy that sometimes I found I laughed out loud at her silliness but some of the choices her mother made, caused me to feel an over protective anger for Violet. The ending gave me mixed feelings. I can see the realistic value of how it ended and I was glad to see Violet was able to see the other side of the situation but I felt like they moved on while I was still feeling a rush of emotions over what happen. In a nutshell, if you can read this through the eyes of a 17 year old girl you are going to LOVE this story. I read it through the eyes of a mother and trust me things don’t calm down so quickly inside my mind when kids and bullying is involved.
I struggled with the number rating for this book only because I am not a huge fan of books about teenage angst and high school drama, let’s be honest I live with two teenage girls, I get enough of that at home. This story fits that genre to a T, BUT I couldn’t ignore the fact that this was a very well written book. The characters were developed so well they almost became real to me and it would be a five star book to those who love this type of plot. So in all fairness and because I do deeply love the message that the author has in this book and her style of writing was wonderful and easy to read and follow, I went with a four stars and feel solid with my choice.

Good Reading

I enjoyed this book. I got sucked in, and finished it early the next day. Blake, and Violet feel like a real couple, Lena is awesome, and the plot is fast paced and intense. If you like drama, there's definitely lots of that in here as well. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Four stars for a teenage audience.... they will really like this, IMO

I love a good revenge storyline, especially if it leads to true redemption…. and this one fits that revenge angle. It’s an emotional drama geared more for the teenage audience but adults can sit back and be entertained too. It’s a clean read in that there are no bedroom acrobatics and sticks to the plot. It’s not ‘clean’ when in comes to language. I know high schoolers don’t shy away from a bad language, but at times this one went somewhat overboard. I must agree that Brianna deserved the term ‘b!tch’. She never showed any redeeming qualities and she got to experience what sowing and reaping is about.

I didn’t understand how the parents never saw what was going on. Uhhhh, high school can be devastating when it comes to confidence being built up or torn down, and that self image can and often will remain over the years.. How were both sets of parents oblivious? And what mother would give her daughter’s room to a long term houseguest without talking to the daughter first?

Overall this was a cute, angsty read with high school antics and drama.

👁⌃👁 OBSERVATIONS:

✒︎ UGH… I always hate it when someone makes a bad choice and won’t accept accountability. Instead they try to convince themselves and others that it was a mistake… a choice is just that, a choice. It’s not a mistake. Blake made a choice.

✒︎ Violet was right in not letting Blake off the hook too easily. What he did was not spontaneous, his emotions and feelings had been building for at least a week when that kiss happened.

✒︎ Glad Lena was there to support Violet. I’m thinking Lena has her own story to tell.

We were given a copy of this and the following two books for an honest review. That being said, we loved these books, they were such great feel good, stories about two sisters and their best friend. Very well written and engaging books. In the first book we meet Violet Forrester a sweet teenager with a bully problem. All her life she has been bullied by Brianna Richardson, but when Brianna starts making passes at Violets boyfriend Blake, Violet decides that enough is enough and it is time that Brianna learns her lesson about leaving other people’s property alone. The school year starts out like any other, new bus drivers, new classes and new students. It is in gym class where Violet meets Lena and they instantly bond. They find that they live close to each other and they start to spend a lot of time together at school. Lena comes to hang out with Violet at her house and that is is when Violets world turns upside down.
“I do say so,” I replied snarkily. Then, changing the subject I asked, “What are you doing tonight?”
Flicking his eyes away, he looked a little uncomfortable. He was silent for a moment before he finally answered with, “I don’t know. I’ll probably just hang out at home and start my homework. My math teacher passed out our textbooks, and assigned reading and questions for the weekend. So I guess I’ll get that done tonight so my weekend is free.”
I nodded. “Smart. Lena is coming to my house for dinner,” I said with a smile.
Hearing her name, Lena leaned around me from her place near the window and said, “I finally get to meet the infamous Mrs. Forrester.”
Blake smiled. “Mrs. Forrester is great, you’ll love her.”
Lizzie, Violets little sister sees Blake over at Breanna’s house after he told Violet he was just going to be at home doing homework and then he lies more trying to make it better and stop her from freaking out. Blake corners Violet and asks to talk to her and explains himself smoothing things over with her and she is able to calm down where Blake is concerned. Lena is acting like she has a secret though and things between her and Breanna start heating up in a big way. They start having more issues in gym class when they are pushed together by their teacher. When Breanna shows up at Violets house however, things get even more intense. Violet finds out that Breanna is going to be staying at her house for a little while due to her parents being away and her life feels like is it thrown into disarray. Will Violet get her revenge on Breanna or will Breanna end up taking the one person who really makes Violet happy? Will Lena let Violet in on her big secret? Read the book and find out.

Firstly I would like to thank Taylor Henderson for sending me a copy of her YA novel Better Than Revenge in exchange for a review.

Better Than Revenge is a fun and relatable young-adult read with really fun and likeable characters. I think many girls can somehow relate to being the victim of the Regina George of their school, and wishes they could stand up to them just as Violet did.

Lena was my favourite character – although I share a similar story to Violet, it’s Lena who I liked the most. I relate to her tough shell but soft centre, and I found her fun and exciting as a character. I also find her relatable to my friends, from the torturous gym (or PE for Brits like me) scenes to the 3am phone calls.

The story has quite a Mean Girls feel to it, and it’s a great lesson on standing up to the school bullies and it-girls.

I rate Better Than Revenge four stars and I’m really looking forward to reading the rest of Taylor Henderson’s Sweet Secrets series.

Better Than Revenge is YA and I loved it. Taylor Henderson captures what some teenage girls go through at this time of their lives very well. Unfortunate for Violet, she lives right next door to her bully and princess wanna be Brianna.

"You know I really do admire, you, Bri Bri." I smiled sweetly, leaning forward as I placed my hand on her shoulder. "The fact that you've had so many f@@k buddies this summer and still have not managed to contract some kind of STI or gotten pregnant really does inspire me."

Violet decides she has had enough of Brianna's antics and plots revenge when Bri makes a play for her boyfriend of two years, Blake.
Violet meets Lena on the first day of school and they become friends instantly. Lena is the support the Violet needs and helps her by being there for her.
There is a part in the book where Brianna stays with Violets family for a week. WHAT, do her parents not know what the history is between these girls? The bullying that Bri does towards Violet is heartbreaking at times.

"Do you regret anything?" A smirk turned the corner of my lips upwards. "Hell no. After all, there's nothing better than revenge."

I loved Violet's strength and some of the nicknames she came up with for Brianna and her followers were hilarious. My heart also went out to Lena and what she was going through. The revenge piece comes a lot later in the book and we find out something very surprising, not at all what I expected.

Better Than Revenge is the first book in the Sweet Secrets series. I can't wait to see what is next. Thank you Taylor Henderson for a great read.

*I was given a copy of this book as a gift from Stephanie's Book Reports in exchange for an honest review.

3 stars for Better than Revenge by Taylor Henderson.

For as long as she can remember, Violet has been teased and tortured by her next door neighbor, Brianna. Brianna is beautiful, and Violet just can't understand why she hates her so much.

Now that they are both in high school, Violet hopes that things between them will change. Violet is happy. She has a great boyfriend named Blake whom she is crazy about. Brianna is the "queen bee" of their high school and she treats everyone (even her friends) like crap. When Blake gets caught up in one of Brianna's webs, Violet has had enough. She realizes that now is the time to retaliate.

Violet and her friend, Lena, come up with a master plan of revenge. When they are through with Brianna, they hope that she will finally realize that being on the wrong side of bullying is no fun. Will their plans produce the results they want, or will they realize that stooping to a bully's level makes you just as bad as the bully?

This was on okay read for me. In my opinion, it is geared towards younger readers, and that is not necessarily a bad thing. Just not my cup of tea.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

Violet And Brianna are neighbors Ever since Violet moved in next door Brianna has been horrible to her. She teases and tortures her. With them both being in high school Violet has hopes of things changing. She's eve got a boyfriend now name Blake. But don't mess with the Queen Bee or you'll get stung, and Brianna is pretty much the it girl at their high school. She's horrible to everyone. But, when Blake gets caught up in one of Brianna's schemes Violet has had enough. Revenge is a dish best served cold and it's time for Brianna to taste some cold dishes.

Gosh this book took me way way back to high school. I loved though how Taylor Henderson wrote the character of Violets voice. I did feel like I would have enjoyed it a whole lot more if I was in my late teens early twenties because that's how high school was. Now many years later you don't pay any attention to the drama. It's a great book and I enjoyed it but kept thinking if I was eighteen I'd love it more.

I bet we all can remember the most popular girl in school. She always gets what she wants, even if it don't belong to her.

In this story her name is Brianna. She has lived next door to Violet. She has taken her friends, boyfriends and likes to bully her. Brianna wants the man Violet loves the most Blake. Violet has had enough of her crap. She wants to give Brianna a taste of her own medicine. Violet and her new friend Lena devise a plan to to get back at Brianna. What are they gonna do? Are they gonna pull it off? You got to read for yourself to find out.

I enjoyed reading this story. Violet like so many other teens are bullied throughout there high school years. This is a story of hope and how a young girl fights back. During this she learns how cope, to trust her true friend's and learns life lessons.

I look forward to reading more books from this series. I recieved an ARC from JoandIsalovesbooks review team for an honest review.

I really, REALLY enjoyed this book! The style in which it was written made me feel like I was right back in high school watching all of the catty drama take place and I LOVED it! Violet has a unique voice which I always enjoy in a narrator and I loved, loved that as a secondary character Lena was such a fireball...do I smell a series of her own? Perhaps some healing for her family? Lol! I really dislike Blakes lying behind and I don't think Vi should have forgiven him giving the duplicitious nature of his "cheating". It was ongoing for Petes sake but...I digress. All in all I really enjoyed this novel!

Different

I enjoyed this story. Different is the word that most comes to mind. The main character violet was real not fabulous beautiful or whatever she is a normal girl I like that. I like that this story is about regular high school life. I have never read a book even similar to this one. So this author truly gets two thumbs up and five stars. Enjoyed getting lost in something real and different. Not perfect, which made it a really great story. Highly recommend.

This is my first Taylor Henderson read, the story flows nicely and the characters are interesting. Honestly, I thought of Mean Girls when I was reading this just a little more immature. It was funny and packed full of teenage drama. At times the story seemed a little slow and I was a little confused on the ages of everyone but overall I enjoyed reading. 3.5 stars

A very ”meh” kinda book

Quite a lot of typos, a few misspellings and other inconsistencies. But the thing that bothered me the most was the little sister, supposedly five years old, sitting in a booster seat attached to the table, not being able to pour drinks in a cup or handle cutlery and still taking naps in the afternoon

Better Than Revenge

This was a good YA read. When the school bully sets her sights on her neighbors boyfriend things go wrong. For who is part of the story. But add a couple of new kids into the mix and you get a good clean, somewhat, revenge. There are two more books in the series.

For me, Taylor Henderson's book, "Better Than Revenge" has a lot of potential. It is about a high school girl named Brianna who has a neighbor named Violet. Violet is one of those popular girls that are at every school- bottled blonde, pretty, and mean to those who she feels are beneath her- at least that's how Brianna sees her. That's where the title "Better Than Revenge" comes in- with Brianna wanting to get revenge on Brianna for being mean to her for all these years.

However, the actual "revenge" doesn't come until you've already read about two hundred pages. I would have liked it if we saw Brianna's schemes earlier on in the book and for it to be bigger than it was. When we finally do get to the revenge portion of the story, it's more like little pranks than anything too involved.

At the beginning of the book, there is a time where Violet stays at Brianna's house for a bit. I thought that this would have been the perfect opportunity for some interaction between the two girls or for some plotting to start, but nothing actually came out of them sharing a roof. It was jus something that I saw as a missed opportunity.

I think a younger audience would like this book. It's an easy and quick read, and the characters are likeable. At some points it seems like the characters are a bit generic, but it doesn't really deter too much from the story and they all have their quirky moments. I especially liked Lena, who becomes Brianna's new best friend after her and her family move to the neighborhood and they have classes together.

This is a book that I would recommend for upper middle school or high school readers who are just looking for something fun and fast to read.

One word describes this book: charming. The characters are amazing, very well-rounded and likable. Violet Forrester and her boyfriend Blake are easy to relate to and you can’t help but root for them from the very beginning. I enjoyed seeing the friendship between Violet and Lena develop as well. Lena Snotty was my favorite character in the book, even though she was a secondary character.
The only thing I had trouble with was the pacing of the book. It seemed like it took too long to get to the meat of the drama. I would have liked to see screaming, hair-pulling drama and more of a risk throughout. I have to say I did enjoy seeing the villain of the story get her just desserts though. Who doesn’t love a good revenge story?
This book is very appropriate for teens and reminded me a lot of my own high school years. I can’t wait to read the next in the series! Scarlet Awakening sounds marvelous.

2.5 stars. This was not an easy read...

I just dont understand the great ratings for this book. I just felt like the story dragged on and on. I started to lose interest early in but I hate not finishing. It took me weeks to finish this book! I had to stop reading it and start another book because it became painful to keep reading. I didnt give it a 1 because it did make me laugh a little toward the end. I guess to each his own. I think I will just stick to ya fantasy/dystopian and thriller/mystery books because these ya contemporay books are so typical.
