This is the forth book in the series (two more to go).
As with the previous three I’ve struggled with the writing style. It distances me from the story constantly referring to main characters as
The immortal (156 times)
The nun (43 times)
The difference here was I also struggled a bit with the characters and the story. Which hasn’t happened with the previous books. I wasn’t sure about Olivia at first. And as for Asgard not letting the council know. That was ridiculous. I know he’d had a bad experience in the past. He wasn’t sure exactly whom he could trust. But seriously with the computer skills of Howard. He could have send everything to several Bastian and Crovirs. I mean what did he have to lose?
This was the weakest book so far but I’m in this until the end so it’s straight onto the next book for me now.
I've been following the Seventeen series for a while now and the books, while not the best I've read, never fail to entertain me. It was a long wait for this fourth book in the series, but I'm glad it finally arrived.
This time not one, not two but three new main characters are introduced at the start of the novel. Two of them, Ethan Storm and Olivia Ash (who together make up the title) have a strange birthmark and with that birthmark come strange powers. This of course besides the 'simple' immortality.
While I enjoyed Ashstorm just like the other books, I was a bit disappointed that Lucas and the other characters from the others books were only introduced so late into this novel. It really took me some time to get used to and like the new characters and while the world was still the same, it took me a bit longer than I'm used to to get into the novel. Also, the author is writing a lot of short stories in this series right now, but I'd like to see her focus more on the full length novels.
However, it was still a very enjoyable book and I'm already looking forward a lot to the next book, which hopefully won't take too long.
Ashstorm is the fourth novel in the Seventeen series. There are short stories like First Death and Dancing Blades and the Meeting as well as the first three full length novels called Soul Meaning, King's Crusade, and Greene's Calling.
[I received a copy of this novel through NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.]
I read the first three books in this series last year, and found them enjoyable—not the best, but definitely enjoyable, and making me feel like checking if book 4 was out. Which it was.
New characters are introduced here, some of them bearing birth marks (and displaying powers) like the main characters in the previous installments, leading more and more to the gathering of a kind of “league” who, no doubt, will have to fight more and more dangerous odds. Olivia and Ethan complement and enhance each other’s powers nicely, while Asgard is tied to quite a few people among the most important ones, owing to his own birth. If there's one thing, it's how little we see of the others as the cast keeps on growing. I can't help but feel impatient regarding the moment when they're finally all together (is this book it, or will others appear in the next one?). Such a group is bound to have an impressive dynamics.
The focus was less on Kronos in general, and more on one specific antagonist pursuing goals tied partly to it and partly to his own ambitions. The idea of a secret base and secret experiments was a bit basic, though, so I hope later developments—the kind hinted at by the end of the novel—will go deeper. That Kronos isn't "only that". I'm sure it's not.
I’m a bit torn, too, regarding relationships between the characters. Although the idea of soulmates finding each other is nice, it’s starting to feel like every set of people is meant to find their own love interest in each story. Maybe it’s just me, but at some point I’d like to see something different, bonds that would run very deep without necessary being “couple-love”. We have some of this here with Ethan and Asgard, and I wish we could see more: after all, they fought Jonah for decades, and their loyalty to each other is unswerving. Comrades to death, and all that.
I still enjoyed the blend of action and quieter moments nonetheless, all the more because the characters didn’t completely forget about their predicament (something that tends to happen too often in many books: as soon as the love interest appears, the impending end of the world doesn’t seem so important anymore, and too much time is spent on trifles).
Once again, I’m not rating this novel higher… yet I’ll still seek out volume 5.
This book starts off with so much action and it keeps going throughout the story. There is so much mystery around every corner. I love how this story keeps you right in the middle of all the action and as if you are getting to know the characters right along side them. Asgard, Ethan, and Olivia find out more and more not only about each other but about what is coming and what has been going on for centuries as they work together to try and save everything they know and love. The gifts Ethan and Olivia have are quite amazing but when they work together things get amazingly intense. A.D. Starrling did a heck of a job keeping me at the edge of my seat wanting more. I will definitely be reading more of this series.
I can't even begin to tell you how fabulous this series is! Ashstorm is a compelling story, one you will find impossible to put down. Fast paced and thrilling. But do yourself a favor and start from the beginning; your experience will be greatly enhanced if you do. You will NOT be sorry, I promise. Full review to follow.
A.D. Starrling has done it again! The books of the Seventeen series never fail to get my adrenaline going. I don't give many 5 star ratings, but Ms. Starrling has already gotten 3 from me this year. Seriously Hollywood, someone needs to option this series for the big screen! Any time I am in a reading slump, one of these books has pulled me right out! I have read every one in a single sitting - I don't think I could go to sleep without finding out what happened first. The books are totally out of my normal genre, but I can't get enough. The plot is action-driven and the stories are engaging, well-researched, and quite detailed. Each installment has also carried just enough romance to keep my smutty little heart happy. Ashstorm even got a few tears out of me, though I still think King's Crusade is my favorite (it's a very close call).
In Ashstorm, we meet Asgard Godard - who is the son of Thomas Godard from Soul Meaning. Asgard was on the tail of his immortal enemy in 1599 when he fell through a glacier and was frozen in ice for nearly 400 years. I am so glad that we get the backstory on Asgard because I am a stickler for details, and I have found many of the books I have read this year to have been sorely lacking in details when it comes to a character's past. No need to worry about this with Ms. Starrling, she takes us on wonderfully detailed forages into the past that are both historically accurate and entertaining. (Well, not so much of a historical event in this book as was the Ottoman Empire in Greene's Calling, but it was a nice foray all the same.) Asgard was a lovable character in that father-figure type way. He made me have lots of feels in this book, particularly when he got to meet Lucas, Anna, Tomas and Lily. I was so stinking happy for him.
Asgard is not our sole main character of this story though, we have a triad to include Ethan Storm and Olivia Ashkarov. I can't tell you how everyone meets without giving spoilers, but I am going to say that it was very very tense and dangerous and everything you expect from this series. Ethan and Olivia are two more of our special immortals with the unique birthmarks - and they have some very cool powers! Ethan is an elemental and can manipulate things around him, and Olivia can do freaky things with her mind. While I liked Ethan's character, I was more drawn to Olivia. Her world was turned topsy turvy when she meets Asgard and Ethan, and she handled it with grace and determination. I couldn't help but like her.
The villains in this story may have been the worst yet - they are connected to evil deeds in prior stories, but they were sooo much worse. There were several times that the bad guy antics made me squeamish. (I will have close my eyes if they ever do make this a movie.) So these bad guys all needed to die, and in a very bad way. They were despicable humans and immortals alike. I know I'm being redundant, but I am trying not to give spoilers and I really really didn't like these guys - who you will know as Jonah, the General, and Scoleri. Scoleri was particularly bad, I would not have minded seeing him get some "an eye for an eye" type punishment. Blech.
Okay so you know (if you are are smart enough to be reading these books) that the overall theme is a good vs. evil type scenario, with a little bit of religious conspiracy and mysticism thrown in. Same goes for this story - good guys fighting the bad guys to save the world. As in the previous books, our special immortals are brought together at some point for the meet and greet, and we get some time with the children, Lily and Tomas. I love these little buggers. I am looking forward to seeing them continue to grow in the series - they are sweet and special and powerful. I anticipate even bigger evil and greater powers as the series progresses. Write fast Ms. Starrling! (Do you really need that day job as a doctor? I told ya these books are intelligently written - our author is a baby doctor!)
Favorite quote from the book: "You should have told me Mr. Godard was intending to kill Mr. Titus. I would have prepared less food."
I was honored enough to receive an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thanks Ms. Starrling!
Ethan and Asgard were imprisoned together but escaped to form an unlikely partnership. When they get word that a convent is being attacked, they get there just in time to rescue Olivia. Little does Ethan know what Olivia will mean to him, and little do they all know what terrible vengeance will be wreaked upon them all.
This is the fourth novel in AD Starrling's "Seventeen" series and the first to really feature more than one main character to focus upon. After "Soul Meaning", I wasn't sure I would be happy to see a different protagonist each time, and now that I have got used to that, she has changed things again by adding extra main characters to the mix. Once again, I am not sure I like this change, but no doubt I'll come round to it just in time for her to change things around again; exactly what intrigues me about this series, you certainly can't predict what will happen next!
As usual, the main characters in this book have managed to get themselves involved with something violent and stressful and, as usual, the book rushes along at breakneck speed. I can't say I liked all the unpleasant experimentation and nastiness that goes on this time (certainly Jonah Klondike is a definite "bad" character) but it makes for an easy and enjoyable read and one which doesn't take too much analysing.
I would definitely say that, by this stage in the series, you will struggle to keep up if you haven't read the longer novels in order and I wouldn't read this one without starting at the beginning first. As a long time reader though, this lastest story doesn't disappoint - I'm just waiting for the next instalment now to see what on earth will happen next!
I received an eARC for an honest review of this book.
Ashstorm is a continuation of the Seventeen series by A.D. Starring. I think this is my favorite book in the series so far. It is fast paced and suspenseful. More is learned about the secret group, Kronos and some of the plans they have been working on for centuries, undetected by the two immortal groups the Bastians and Crovirs. I liked the romance between Olivia and Ethan better than some of the romances in the past books of this series. I think there was a more of a connection between the two described in the story. The end of this gives you a glimpse of the characters from the past books and how they are interacting with each other and hints of a destiny they are meant to fulfill together.
A.D. Starrling does it again! 'Ashstorm' is another great book in the 'Seventeen' series. New fabulous characters and never-ending action is what makes this series amazing. As always, I can't wait for the next book to come out!
Thanks for NetGalley for giving me an e-ARC for my honest review!
I was so sad there wasn’t an audiobook for the rest of this series. The narrator, Michael Bower, was amazing and while reading this book I narrated it in his voice in my head, even if I had to guess how Asgard and Ethan would sound! I’m not sure why there aren’t audiobooks after book 3, but I will just be thankful for the books he did narrate because I loved what I got! I hope he narrates other books, but didn’t find too many.
With that out of the way, this story seemed a lot more harrowing due to our characters being in captivity or being pursued for captivity and experiments. It takes a certain someone to experiment on humans like we get here. The person doing the kidnapping and experiments remains shrouded in mystery still, and I would guess we’ll eventually find out what his ultimate end goal was or even if he’s really dead.
The soulmate bond was a bit more interesting here. I liked how we got an expanded view of how it manifests in the immortals as well as that it’s possible to have more than one soulmate even if the latter wasn’t explained further and even the oldest immortal didn’t know there could be more than one soulmate. I can’t wait to read more, but I will admit I get so nervous and anxious over the action I sometimes skim through all of that action so maybe I missed some important info? Anyway, this author has done an excellent job of world building and I need to know what happens next! I just wish I had an audiobook to continue the story as I don’t always have the ability to sit down and read.

Wow !!!! This book was a super fantastic read !!! Olivia is a novice nun , sequestered in a remote location with the Benedictine order of nuns. On a horrible night that changes her life , she comes across two immortals who are trying to help her. Asgard has been kidnapped and experimented on for a very long time. When Ethan joins him , he knows that their chance for freedom will be soon . As these three immortals find themselves embroiled in the mighty mystery of the very first immortals , this story moves forward in a spectacular way . I was on the edge of my seat, and could barely put this story down !!! Lots of bad guys. Lots of action and adventure . So very excited to read the next book in thus wondrous series !!!!
The fast pace continues and the new characters appear only to link up at the end with the main characters from books 1-3. The structure begins to make sense and links to the untold origin story begin to emerge. Starrling's writing also grows in depth and she seems more comfortable in slowing down to explore character and feelings. Finally, the stakes grow exponentially to the level of potential nuclear annihilation. What can come next? An intermission it would appear as the 5th book is called Origins
This is just an awesome series!!!! There are new characters introduced and they bring so much action from the very beginning of the story. The page turning action and the storyline just captivates. My only wish is to have some of the old characters pop in…like Soul. I miss him! I would recommend the page turner to anyone who can read…. A.D Starrling – you did NOT disappoint!!
As with books one, two and three, I couldn't stop reading until my mind shut down from fatigue. Don't start one of these books late in the day if you need to get any sleep that night. Even then, be prepared for the overwhelming urge to start the next book immediately, no matter how sleepy you are.
An intense very interesting book! I loved it! This book is about Olivia and Ethan but there is more. You add an uncle, Madeline and my favorite, Howard mix well and you have mystery, action, humor and definitely romance. I highly recommend this book as I could not put it down!
Olivia and Ethan find each other after overwhelming odds. They start growing and learning. With Asgard’s help and guidance they discover who they are and a foreshadowing of what their future holds.
There are good guys and bad guys the age old fight of good versus bad extra special abilities and immortals with the fate of the world in their hands excellent stories with some factual science too loved it ❤️📚❤️
Outstanding read! Author AD Starrling again expands her literary world with this one. With each book she writes she further expands the work already created. I look forward to the next book.
I completely and thoroughly enjoyed this series from beginning to end. There really isn't much more to say.
The only negative is that I wish some of the characters (ie Lucas & Anna; Alexa & Jackson; Conrad & Laura) would have featured more permanently in the books following their stories. I dislike it when characters all but disappear. I understand that each couple has a story to tell, but I just wish the others would come into play. They do appear in the books, but not nearly as often as I would like. But again, this is a minor negative.
I loved all the action, the characters, the writing, the settings. I am really glad that I decided to give this one a go and will be recommending it to anyone looking for a good read. Whether you like paranormal or not, this is a fabulous story. I think what I really liked about it is that it was very different from other paranormal reads. I mean there were no vampires, werewolves, witches, fairies, just 2 races of immortals; Bastian & Corvir. It was a well though out, well executed story and I am anxiously awaiting the next installment to see where we will go next.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher for an honest review. The Bastion and Crovirs are two groups of immortals that can live through sixteen deaths as long as there not blown up or decapitated. In this book Ethan meets his soulmate Olivia. Ethan is a powerful elemental while Olivia is a powerful psychic. Together there powers are virtually unstoppable & unlike any others. Jonah is an immortal that partnered with a secret branch of the government has been kidnapping, experimenting & causing the deaths of immortals and humans. He's been doing this hundreds of years. His goal is to create super soldiers powerful enough to wipe out humans and immortals both. Ethan and Olivia along with there allies set out to put a stop to his evil. This book was better than the last and I'm hoping the next in this series is better than this one. Thumbs up!
My favourite of the series. While still fast-paced and full of action, the author took a bit more time with characters which made me feel more involved and less as just an observer. I do hope A.D Starrling will continue with the series - I am enjoying the authors "voice" and good, intelligent writing. Meanwhile, will be catching up on the short stories.
Incredibly entertaining. Rangers are in a battalion not a regiment AD...
I would wish for nothing more than time and every novel that AD Startling writes. She is that original and that proficient at keeping you turning the pages as quickly as one is capable.
