He is mostly famous for his series Innocent and Innocent Rouge.

I tell you what - Japanese authors may sometimes have a weird perspective on European history, be it Middle Ages, Queen Victoria's ruling, or introduction to French Revolution, like here, but the execution of their works is usually so stunningly immaculate/original/funny/you pick yourself, that one (me) can actually forgive everything. Innocent was no exception.

I read 9 volumes in one breath just to realize it was still ongoing under a slightly differed name, as Innocent Rouge. Which is awesome. Here was presented the story of Charles-Henri Sanson, Monsieur of Paris, or to put it simple, great royal executioner, who by the way was a real historical personality and was famous for starting using the guillotine when it was invented.

In general Sakamoto is rather faithful to Sanson's biography, to the WHO and WHAT - he checked the facts, he checked the backgrounds (I looked in wikipedia for Sanson and manga is very close to real story), and omg, his detail of costume is mindblowing!!! But he allowed himself an obvious liberties when working on HOW... It includes relationships in protagonist's family, his actual personality and his sexuality. And I don't care. Because the art, because the scenes, because the drama - it was fantastic! And the long way Charles-Henri comes from scared teenager into the position of the feared and powerful Grim Reaper of Paris is something you can't take your eyes off. It's fascinating. And sometimes gory and extremely violent. The depiction of tortures and corporal punishments is well detailed and described. This is not your regular homoerotic shojo manga.
Together with Charles the figure of his little sister Marie-Joseph comes into the light and at some point she simply steals the show. She's on the good way to become a psychopath, but let's hope the author won't go that far...

The only confusing moments were when the author tried to be, hmm, comical? It simply didn't work for me and was so off, but then again, it didn't happen that often.
If you like your manga historical a la Versailles no Bara style, but full of bishonens and beautiful designs and piles of cut off heads and laughing maniacs you should try Innocent.

P.S. And you should also definitely check Sakamoto's instagram. Those cakes!!!!! And the art of course... ;)

It was one of the most exquisitely drawn manga I have ever read, which added to the already incredible experience. The narrative is compelling, ethically sound, and mentally demanding—all things my 2024 self would have loved to read.

خیلی عجیبه که جایی به این مانگا اشاره نکرده بودن و خیلی اتفاقی پیداش کردم. آرت و داستان توی همین قسمت اول به حدی خوب بود که تعجب کردم. ساکاموتو مشخصا خیلی تسلط زیادی به مدیایی که کار میکنه داره، تمام پنل‌ها با دقت انتخاب شدن، حتی فضاهای خالی هم منطقی و درستن. داستان هم... همونیه که باید باشه. همه چیزش توی یه بالانس تحسین برانگیزه.
امیدوارم افت نکنه.

Amo el dibujo de este mangaka, me parece precioso y muy realista.
Hay dos cosas específicas que el autor dibuja de maravilla y consigue transmitirlas a la perfección: 1. las emociones (sobre todo a partir de planos detalle de los ojos); y 2. las imágenes violentas, que por cierto son espeluznantes.

Nunca había oído hablar de la familia Sanson y su odiada, y temida, profesión, pero su historia es muy interesante y algo... creepy.

El protagonista, Charles-Henri Sanson, es un niño (aunque quizás en aquella época ya no lo era) obligado a ejercer un oficio (oficio que pasa de padres a hijos) que no desea.
Es maravilloso como el autor nos mete en la piel de este chico y nos lo hace pasar tan mal como a él.

Una obra que NO es para todos los públicos.
Si os gusta la historia os gustará. Si no os gusta la historia también.

De lo mejorcito que he leído. Espero poder leer el segundo volumen pronto.

Très introductif mais on sait déjà qu’on veut absolument lire la suite.

C’est hyper interessant d’avoir le point de vue du bourreau et du futur bourreau de la révolution française.

Pour le moment on n’est que sur les prémices mais j’aime beaucoup voir les tourments du personnages principal, ses idéologies et ses réticences.

Un monde pas facile.

C’est très bien retranscrit, assez graphique, beau et horrible en même temps.

Les dessins sont quant à eu absolument divins.

Con uno de los mejores dibujos que he visto hasta ahora esta historia nos narra la vida de
Charles-Henri Sanson el verdugo de París encargado de guillotinar a Luis XVI. La historia comienza con Charles-Henry renegando de su herencia familiar, la cual implica convertirse en verdugo. Nuestro protagonista tendrá que llevar la losa de no ser ni un noble ni un plebeyo y enfrentarse a una vida en el que es temido por todos como emisario de la muerte en que se va a convertir, toda la historia esta bañada de sexo y momentos de tremenda violencia.
De momento le doy 4 estrellas porque tengo la sensación que esto no ha sido más que un prologo, veremos como avanza, pero es muy prometedor.

Drawing and story are two completely different point of a manga. I have read manga with average drawing but a great story and mangas with bad or incomprehensible story with god level art, this manga belongs to this category. I can go forward with this manga for the sake of its art but I would like more to have a better story.

Una maravilla de ilustraciones y hechos históricos de la Revolución Francesa, usando como eje el caso real de la familia de verdugos Sanson (con algunas licencias dramáticas, claro está), enfocado en su deber y cómo éste los marca a fuego. Muy gráficas las descripciones de los suplicios, en especial el descuartizamiento tirado por caballos, que había leído mil veces en libros de historia, pero no me había puesto a pensar en lo horrible que era. Impresionante sería la palabra más adecuada para todo el trabajo de este manga.

Tbh..I don't really pick up Manga for the art..
I'm more of a story/ writer appreciator ..

However .this Manga is relatively new to me...and I did (first time in a long while) stop and linger over some of the art in this volume

A mix of realistic/gothic and somewhat graphic art makes me want to continue.

The story...just by the very nature of the plot is going to be graphic....but the pure anatomical descriptions of slicing bodies etc....again surprised/interested me

Very different from what I've been reading.....that's a good experience!

[volumes 1-9, chapters 1-89] I LOVED this. Shin-ichi Sakamoto is probably the most artistically Literary manga-ka I’ve read, in a way that occasionally feels constrained by the medium, but more often than not leaps off the page. Not very subtle, but so many unforgettably beautiful sequences and SUPER fucking cool, although there’s an anal fingering page turn in volume 2 that startled me pretty bad lmao

Also, varying levels of Miku Binder Thomas Jefferson historical fiction OC-ification going on here, but holy SHIT Marie-Joseph Sanson is truly one of the all time greats. This series jumped publishers after the ninth volume so I’m excited to pick up the immediate sequel series Innocent Rouge ASAP

When I discovered Innocent I was immediately drawn to it even though it is far from what I normally read. The art is painfully beautiful and stands in stark contrast to the topic of this series which is going to show us the life of Charles-Henri Sanson, the executioner of Louis XVI of France and many others.

Volume 1 introduces Charles-Henri at the age of 14. He is destined to follow in his father’s footsteps to become the so called Monsieur de Paris. Charles-Henri desperately wants to escape his fate but eventually has to give in and becomes an apprentice to his father. He tries to hang on to the teachings of his tutor and to stay true to God but when he tries to defend a life by saying he won’t kill an innocent it sets something in motion that he couldn’t foresee.

The way volume 1 ends is horrible and I mean it in the truest sense of the word. So I’m desperate to read volume 2 right now.

As I said, the art is beautiful but the mangaka doesn’t shy away from showing the reader the awful truth when it comes to (emotional) pain, violence and bloodshed. He sometimes (or at the same time) uses metaphors. For example when instead of hitting the first vertebra to sever the head neatly with the sword he shows us Atlas getting hit in the hip, which stops the sword and leaves the condemned man alive and in extreme pain.

I'm struggeling with the rating (4 or 5 stars?) because I still feel a bit sick to my stomach and ... troubled.

Esta historia trata acerca de Charles-Henri Sanson quien llegaría a ser uno de los verdugos oficiales de París durante un período muy importante.

Debo empezar diciendo que el dibujo es sumamente impresionante, todo tiene un detalle que resulta asombroso y cuando digo todo, me refiero hasta lo más minucioso y pequeño que pueda haber, se nota mucho la habilidad del autor (y sus ayudantes) para hacer trazos muy delicados y finos que le dan un peso muy particular a las expresiones de los personajes y a las situaciones que se presentan.

Sin duda el protagonista al formar parte de una familia con una tradición sumamente particular, como la de ser generación tras generación los encargados de impartir justicia aplicando la pena de muerte a los que infringen la ley, le resulta algo muy pesado de sobrellevar, no sólo por la carga emocional y psicológica que implica si no también por el repudio y desprecio que la sociedad tiene hacia ellos al ser vistos como un signo de mal agüero.

No será nada fácil avanzar por el camino que le ha sido impuesto solo por el hecho de haber nacido en esta familia. Desde un inicio se augura que su historia será muy tormentosa y llena de muchos obstáculos a vencer, siendo que en ningún momento (al menos en este tomo) tendrá un respiro.
A pesar de ser un tomo introductorio a mi parecer pasan tantas cosas que logras sentir empatía por el protagonista y entender la desesperación y los sentimientos encontrados al tener que enfrentar este cruento destino, las etapas que tiene que ir superando y las sorpresas que se va encontrando. Realmente no puedes dejar de pensar a cada momento que se merecía una mejor suerte el pobrecito.

Eso sí, hay ciertas situaciones que me han tomado totalmente desprevenida, no sólo por el momento que representan si no también porque el dibujo logra a mi parecer transmitir una amplia variedad de emociones que las refuerzan, momentos de desesperación, asombro, incredulidad, alivio...y obvio, la muy singular manera de vivir de los parisinos en la época previa a la revolución.

Y el final, siendo cómo se han dado los eventos en este primer tomo, no podía terminar de una manera menos dramática en un momento importante para el protagonista.

Cabe mencionar que ésta historia está basada en datos históricos del personaje pero con algunos ajustes, lo cual resulta interesante y un aliciente para que la curiosidad te impulse a leer sobre la vida de Charles-Henri Sanson, aunque tengo que mencionar que siento que es una historia no tan fácil de recomendar, sin embargo un punto a su favor es el hecho de ser un manga con base histórica, no tan común como otras tantas historias y con un dibujo impresionante, así que por lo mismo se merece una oportunidad y si no es de tu agrado, al menos habrás probado leer algo diferente.

QUE BUEN INICIO DE OBRA, SANTO DIOS.
Ayudó mucho el hecho de que, recientemente, me he obsesionado con Francia por culpa de Versalles, una serie que recomiendo fuertemente a todo el mundo. En este primer tomo nos encontramos en Francia siglo XVIII, el hijo del verdugo, Charles es un inocente joven de 14 años que no está preparado para convertirse en un asesino. A pesar de su lucha por evitar su destino, en las últimas páginas deberá enfrentar su primera decapitación, y lo más lamentable es que tendrá que matar a un joven que conoce. Así empieza su historia y yo estoy ENFERMAMENTE ANSIOSA por saber cómo se irá desenvolviendo Charles a lo largo de estos 9 tomos. Le tengo mucha fe, y que sea historia francesa en este momento capta mucho mi atención.

TW: torture, mort, sexe. Je ne m’attendais pas à adorer autant. Les graphismes sont à couper le souffle. Je crois que niveau intrigue je préfère Innocent que DRCL. Le premier tome est vraiment adressé à un public averti et bien dans son mental. il n’est vraiment pas à mettre entre n’importe quel mains. Tous les personnages ont une violence et sont une cruauté innée. Hâte de voir comment cela va évoluer

Innocent is manga that reflect on the Sanson’s Family a famous France Royal Executioners Family and Mainly on our Main Character Charles Henri Sanson…the Story is Kinda interesting to follow on but my major issue with this volume is the art work, the art work are good but sometimes it just get unrelatable to the story, the time period or it just becomes weird and you can’t get anything out of it!

I really loved the art style and the premise, but besides that, this manga really couldn't catch me.
It was quite boring and I couldn't really make out an actual plot, sadly.
