Hellion

Rate this book
Suffolk, 1817.

In addition to a fine estate, Oliver Fitzwilliam has inherited a nineteen-year-old ward, Simon Cavandish. Oliver has no time at all for Simon—the feeling is very much mutual—but he can no longer ignore the boy’s reputation as something of a hellion.

When Simon embarrasses Oliver at a neighbour’s ball, the brat’s just asking for a spanking.

It turns out that might just be the best thing for both of them.

Lisa Henry is a fantastic writer, but most of her books are too dark for me.

This one, however, is just right: a delightful, dirty romp through the stables of Regency England.

Includes: a brat in need of a spanking, a baronet with a penchant for tight arses, sexy enemies-to-lovers theme, delicious 15-year age gap, and puppies (plural!).

Oliver doesn't listen, and Simon doesn't talk—a smoldering combination indeed.

The climax (*ahem*) in the stables made these two stubborn men finally see beyond the animosity to the lust underneath.

If there is no rage like "love to hatred turned," then there is no passion like hatred turned to love.

He and Sir Oliver were like flint and steel. Whenever they crashed together, sparks burst forth.

My only complaint is that Oliver and Simon are such dynamic characters, I wanted more!

4.25 stars--My first Lisa Henry! It took a Regency to hook me in.

And how did I find this Regency guardian/ward bonbon?

Some read DRiTC stories based on the author, other on the prompts. I was ALL OVER THIS PROMPT! Like this was in my top 3 of prompts from this year's event.

Simon and Oliver? Perfect names. Their back story - an older baronet who who enjoys the Ton and hates the country. And can not stand the teenage ward attached to his country seat, Simon, a young orphaned gentleman. Simon, who prefers getting his hands dirty and caring for animals loathes his guardian as well.

You know they say there's a thin line between love and hate. Or in their case, hate and lust. Oh, do they give into their passion.

Can we say barn loving? And young supple backside spanking?!

I lived for every one of those swats. Spanking a firm bratty ass always sets the right tone for me. *slurps*

I wish this story was longer.

I'm sure if it were, the tension explored even further, Simon holding out into giving in just a little longer, this would've been an easy 5 stars. I love biting characters, Oliver was on the acerbic side but it makes for a great character, IMO. The story is short but it gives a great snippet into their lives.

Thanks to the author and the team behind this story. And also, kudos to Jennifer for a fantastic prompt & picture. :D

M/M bodice rippers should be a thing now. I nominate Lisa Henry to lead the charge.

I smiled through the whole thing.

I loved the witty dialogue.

I loved the characters.

I loved the dogs.

I loved the historicalness.

My favorite part, shockingly, was the bodice ripping.

That bodice got ripped so gooooooood.

I wish it were longer. I need Oliver to rip Simon's bodice again. And again.

Thanks to the author and her team for participating.

Hey! My story is out!

It's regency, which was fun. There's spanking, which was even more fun.

One of the MCs is a total dick, and the other one is a brat.

It totally works for them.

If you check it out, I hope you like it!

My second read by Lisa Henry and my first m/m historical read (I think) I really liked it! A bit taboo since there’s older/younger/guardian relationship. I didn’t mind that the story was short but considering it was I wished they would of been more development in the relationship between the Mc’s. I really think LH could of done that in the same amount of pages. Regardless I still liked it! ♥️

Regency romance between a lord and his ward.

Delightful gambol in the countryside as Sir Oliver retires along with the rest of the Ton to their estates. Waverly would be downright boring if it weren't for Nicolas and Jane visiting, and his half-wild ward, Simon. Having been allowed to run loose for far too many years, Oliver decides to finally bring him back into line and teach him to act the respectable gentlemen. Who knew chastisement could be so diverting?

Definitely the sweet side of Henry, here.

GAH! Yes. This was teh good.
Do I have to words?

OK. I try.

Yummy feels-generating story, and squirmy for more than one reason. Not just the one you think (but that one too). The characters popped directly off the page, an excellent accomplishment for <15K words. And not only the main dudes — there were at least 4 peripheral characters whose personalities and roles contributed an impact, two of whom were essential, because .

Lisa Henry can do shorts WELL. But dammit, I still wish I had another 100 pages of these two hot potatoes.

(Thanks for the nudge, Annery! It's been on my kindle over a year but who knows when it would have happened. xx)

3.75 stars, rounded up!

Lisa Henry does regency.
description

After another season in London, Sir Oliver Fitzwilliam returns to his country estate. He's not looking forward to it. Country life is boring and monotonous. Country life also means dealing with Simon Cavendish, Sir Oliver's unwanted younger ward. Simon is uncontrollable, and gets on Sir Oliver's nerves. He makes Sir Oliver want to bend him over his knee and give him a spanking. Purely for platonic reasons, of course.

I really enjoyed this. For such a short story, it was able to capture the atmosphere of a country-set regency. There is a grand house, the wide open fields, and even a neighbourhood ball. I also liked the slight angst which gave the story some depth. The kink only pops up once, but it was still a sexy scene.

Overall, a very good addition to the Love is an Open Road event. My only compliant is that the romance doesn't come about until right near the end. A few extra pages with Sir Oliver and Simon together would have been appreciated. I've got my fingers crossed for a sequel!

I'm not a big historical reader. But hey, it's Lisa Henry! Of course I liked this.
“You are the most uncouth, ill-mannered, disrespectful little brat I’ve ever had the misfortune to meet.” Simon’s gaze flicked to Oliver’s hands, and then back to his face. “It’s high time someone showed you your place.”
That's right. Show him his place, Oliver. *eyebrow waggle*

Yummy, hot little tease of a regency story. I'd whine that I wished it were longer, but given this author's outrageous generosity with free fictions this year, that would be the height of churlishness. Altogether fun, steamy addition to the event.

Ok, here's my review.

Ready?

I. Want. MORE.

There is a deeeeeliCIOUS wider story here, begging and scratching to be told.

Once again, you tease me with your skills, Lisa Henry. Uhhh, make of that what you will.

If you've never tried reading an historical before, here's a wonderful first step into that type of story.

If you enjoy historicals, then you'll definitely enjoy this.

Really, I wanna know more about Simon and Oliver.

3 Stars - A cute tease but way too short, I wanted much much more.

Hellion is a M/M Romance Group freebie novella from the event "Love is an Open Road" (get it here). My friends seems to love it. — Regency, smexy, 50 pages by the talented Lisa Henry. I was in the mood for light and fun kink today.

**********************************************

Oliver Fitzwilliam, Baronet of Stockdale inherited his title and Suffolk Waverley estate a few years ago. With his legacy he is also stucked with his uncle's young protege Simon Cavendish. Now gorgeous, 19 years old and all trouble...

This was tempting steamy, a bit rushed and I'm honestly not wholeheartedly impressed. It felt a bit like reading two chapters when at least two more are needed. Anyway, I enjoyed the few pages I got.

I LIKE - puppies

HELL F-ING YEAH! Now THIS is the kind of Regency I can get behind.

I loved everything about this story. The descriptions of the settings were fantastic. I loved the tension and buildup between Sir Oliver & Simon and I adored the way the story and the relationship between them played out.

Woop! I am 3 for 3 with "Love is an Open Road" stories.

A HUGE thank you to Lisa Henry and ALL of the volunteers that make this event possible!!! *tips top hat*

Thanks for the nudge, SRAL! *mwah*

5 stars, because it's Lisa Henry and I adored Simon, the brat, and his dogs ;)
Oliver, on the other hand, I would love to put on my own lap and spank until he comes to his senses :D :D :D What an insensitive, spoilt snob! ;)

Quite an enjoyable, a bit kinky, and adorable read (and a freebie, too!). Recommended! :)

Thanks to the author for participating and offering this freebie. Regardless of rating that's appreciated.

Historicals aren't my first choice but I was tempted in by who wrote it. The writing was as expected smooth and engaging, unfortunately for me the characters weren't.

The puppy was cute. Side character Jane showed wry spirit and had potential.

Of the main characters; Simon was too much a child I couldn't believe him as capable or responsible, or accept him as a viable love interest - a good part of that is because we're seeing him more through the eyes of other characters rather than by example.

Then Oliver. Pompous gentleman with a taste for paying pennies to get 'dainty young things squirming in his lap'. I remain completely unconvinced that there could be any affection between them, it read far more like a wealthy man finding a new spankable dalliance -one entirely behoven to him- than a romance. In fact I rather detested Oliver.

The stars are for the writing, the story didn't work for me.

Started strong -- but it needed a whole lot more pages for me to believe in the transformation from hate-to-love. Especially Oliver. He was too full of disdain over his ward, that I could not believe that one moment of his eye-gazing of Simon's naked form was all that Oliver needed to have a change of heart. The transition between the spanking session to the library (those who have read this will know what I mean) was way too quick and not entirely convincing turnabout of feeling.

For me, Simon was more believable because we got that glimpse of his feeling towards his guardian. But Oliver? Not so much. Oh, in addition, I really didn't get the 'brat' or 'hellion' characteristic from Simon. I thought that people just misunderstood Simon because he preferred to be with his horses and dogs rather than wearing nice clothes and acts like a gentleman should. But that's not "brattish" behavior to me.

Having said that, my oh my, I needed to have less dark historical stories from you, Lisa Henry. You hear me? :)

How easily hatred slid into another primal feeling: lust.

Good lord, I love historicals.

This was so damn good. The prompt picture (right click and save) is freaking fracking sexy and the story fits it perfectly. ACK. Oliver and Simon, Simon and Oliver. I loved the budding relationship or rather, lack there of between the guardian and his ward. When realization of dislike turns to interest that turns to domestic discipline and then toward some yummy skin on skin action. *fans self* Yeah, this was good.

This is yet another story in this event where I could have read a great number of pages more about the characters but that end was sticky sweet so I am once again, sated.

For now.

This was my first time submitting a prompt, and I really had no idea what to expect, but I knew Lisa Henry would blow me away with her story, and she absolutely did.

Simon is the perfect hellion - he's wild, unruly, resentful of anyone who tries to place limits or restrictions on him (especially Oliver whom he sees as an usurper who swooped in and took over Simon's home and life), but it's natural because no one has cared enough to step in and actually give him the attention and discipline he's needed since he was a young child.

Oliver is exactly the right man to take Simon in hand... if only he opens his eyes to see Simon's need to be wanted, his need to be... not tamed, but put on a different path - one that leads to a better future and a sense of belonging.

Nicholas and Jane were lovely friends, and the housekeeper, though she often got frustrated with Simon, never gave up on him, so kudos to her - he didn't make it easy.

The scene in the barn (yes - *that* scene) was oh, so hot, and we may not have seen the details of their first night in bed together, but just the line "It was revelatory." gave me shivers. A+ chemistry.

I just loved every word, really, and could have happily read on and on and on about them for days.

So, this was a little experiment for me. I 've read plenty of Historical romance but never MM . So this is Regency and Lisa Henry, a good place to start.

I truly loved this story. The enemies to lovers theme was pulled off expertly. Oliver was an asshole but I didn't really mind. The stable scene was super hot, the brat had it coming. And why do I feel that the sex in historicals is so much filthier? Is it just me?

I adored the setting and the puppies. My only niggle is that I wanted more romance. They only got together towards the end and I don't think that all these fights between them qualify as slow burn.

Overall, a great story:)

P.S. Dani! I liked this. You promised historicals "all dirty, all the time". I'm ready.

What a brilliantly-written short story! Not a word was wasted, the dialogue was delightfully pithy, and every character sprang to life. I say that despite the fact that the drastically unbalanced power dynamic between the MCs made me uncomfortable.

I thought Sir Oliver was a nasty piece of work, and I would have preferred to see their roles reversed . But even though I was left with a vaguely squicky feeling, I can't help appreciating this. If Lisa Henry devoted herself to writing m/m Regency romance I think I would follow her anywhere.

Lisa, Lisa, Lisa...Why oh why was Oliver such a dick? Grrrrr...

Not normally my type of story but I really enjoyed it once I stopped truly hating Oliver.

Thanks to all the Group members who provided awesome prompts with lovely pictures, the authors for writing free stories based on those prompts for all of us to read for free and the M/M Romance Group for all their hard work in putting this years Don’t Read in the Closet event, Love is an Open Road, together.

In Poland they sell this wine at the supermarket, it's cheap as rocks and you probably wouldn't whip it out in "respectable" company but it's delicious, it gets you buzzed in the happiest way and it's:

When I saw it for the first time I couldn't stop chuckling, like, creepy Bella Swan chuckling in the middle of the liquor aisle and I still can't get over how genius it is. D'vine.

What do you mean, puns are not genius?

So Hellion reminded me of that as I was looking for fitting adjectives to make a praise sandwich. Hellion is a delightful Regency piece, it's the most perfect historical romance read I've read in ages. It's clever, snarky, hot as blazes. Perfect slow burn (because when you read historical romance, isn't the slow burn and the cool facade and propriety and classism the whole point?) full of douchey snobbery, storming out of the country manor, angry horse rides, passive-aggressive dinners and other gentelmanly shenanigans. You know how usually when there's conflict between MCs in these kinds of stories, it's just misunderstanding because those guys keep using the wrong words to verbally express their mutual hard-ons? Not here! Real honest delightful douchebaggery going on here. And when the sexual tension finally discharges it is so filthy hot you can only sit there and clutch your pearls and cover your blush. Or you know, whatever it is you do when reading porn. All this with bonus perfectly proper historical-like writing style devoid of random blatantly modern phrases.

If you haven't read it yet, treat yourself! Screw summaries and analysis, this story is an EXPERIENCE. Seriously, all the stars. I've been giving out two-stars and three-stars ratings for daaaays, this story deserves them all for what it chooses to be. If it chose to be an outrageously inappropriate romp that defies boundaries of social acceptance, equality, decency and all that... Well, that was kind of the point, wasn't it?

This was a really, really good story from the event this year. I love Lisa's writing.

Oliver and Simon hate each other. Oliver doesn't listen and Simon doesn't talk. There's so much tension between the two that works really well.

The barn scene was just what these two needed and it led to a wonderful ending perfect for these two.

“You are the devil,” Simon muttered, tugging on a lock of Oliver’s hair.

“And you are a hellion,” Oliver said fondly, leaning in to claim Simon’s mouth in a kiss.
