Dragon Calling #2
The Beacon Thrones
A fractured prophecy. A secret power in peril. The key to restoring both lies with Valadae’s last dragon.
Laeka’Draeon is the last dragon in Valadae.
The key to finding his missing kin lies in a prophecy delivered by the centaur prophet, Belzor Ven’Ho. To unravel its hidden meanings, he and his companions must brave the depths of Raegelian Forest, where the legendary seer, Lady Megandel, keeps her vigil.
But the enemies of the old wars have already set their plans in motion, threatening far more than his quest. A terrible doom gathers on Valadae’s horizon, and the power to avert it resides in the mysterious Beacon Thrones—a power only a dragon can awaken.
As the threat against the allied kingdoms grows ever graver, Laeka’Draeon will need more than strength and determination to confront it.

About the author
N.R. Eccles-Smith
10 books27 followersNaomi confesses that the best word to describe her is: whimsical. Forget “the girl next door”—think more along the lines of “the girl from the next galaxy over,” and you’ll be closer to the mark. She’s an unequivocal daydreamer, anime enthusiast, partisan of fantastical things, and an unshakable devotee to storytelling.
When not immersed in her written and illustrative projects, Naomi can be found wandering the worlds created by others, either between the pages of a book or across the sweeping digital scapes of console games. Part geek, part monster-slayer, with a heart for all things noble, wondrous—and perhaps a touch creepy and unusual—she endeavours to remind us that a little beautiful strangeness is a good thing to have in this crazy world.
She currently lives in Australia’s sunny state of Queensland, with an assortment of cats and family members.

The Beacon Thrones continues the adventures of Laeka'Draeon and his friends as they try and save Valadae from the evil that's invading it. The second book in the Dragon Calling series is certainly enjoyable and contains some great world-building and wonderful creatures, but it was just a touch more meandering than the first book. However, it still held my interest throughout and I look forward to seeing what happens in the next installment.

This book is definitely worth the read. I really loved the first book in the series, and I'm pleased to say that I found this one to be even better. It contains plenty of action and suspense, and the plight of the main characters (characters you actually care about) becomes more desperate - and imperative to the survival of the world. I'm definitely looking forward to book 3, and would suggest this series to anyone. Just make sure you read book 1 first!

Better than the first
This second book didn't contain as many hard to read names in the book which was helpful to us who have to read the story out loud. My son loves this series but there were some mild swearing in the book and a mention of demons that I found upsetting. Other than that, we especially loved the centaurs. I find this book easier to read out loud than the first and more emotional. I would have given the book a five star rating if the author hadn't mentioned demon.

October 7, 2015Note: As of 2026, the original edition has been discontinued. Now it's time for the second edition to soar.
A writer's journey is a road that winds ever on, full of climbs and curves, dips and straights, and unexpected vistas around every turn. Returning to The Beacon Thrones for the revised Second Edition has been its own kind of journey: a chance to breathe new life into a story that has grown alongside me.
Revisiting these chapters allowed me to polish the prose, clarify more world-building elements, and honour the tale and its characters with greater consistency.
The primary changes found in the Second Edition:
- Revised written content (improved sensory descriptions, trimmed excessive use of character names, cut down and changed echo words, sticky paragraphs, redundant phrases, and sentences heavily structured with “of”s). Also included are some brand new scenes!
- Enhanced world‑building elements (more unique lexicons and creature lore, improved character voice, and added cultural idioms and jargon).
- Added Chapter Banner Designs for a bit more artistic flourish.
- Swapped out the old line map for a double‑spread map with much more detail.
- Added the new logos to the front content pages.
- Larger font size and book size.
To all Dragon-Seekers, young and old, thank you for joining me once more in this grand adventure. Let's save Valadae together.
