"Sometimes it isn’t the hurt that’s most difficult to lift away from an old wound, it’s the happiness we’ve laid over it."
Can assassins have friends?
Carly and Jane are back on the road – only they’ve had trouble leaving a certain sexy gypsy and a teenager behind. Business as usual is unraveling, and the assignment that just landed in their laps isn’t a good one for training wheels…
Lesbian Assassins 2 is book two in a new series of shorter novels - quick reads with quirky, memorable characters, storylines you'll cheer for, and the occasional turn you might not see coming.
The sequel to Lesbian Assassins did not disappoint - in fact, I think I might even have liked it a tiny bit better than the first one, as we now know the characters and the scene has been set. Also, I think I found the ending slightly more realistic than in the first book, which has bumped my rating up the extra half-star.
I love Carly and Jane, Rosie and Lelo, and wish the book had been twice as long, so there had been more page-time to devote to their relationships and secrets. Audrey Faye writes characters so well, and creates people you'd want to meet and befriend in real life.
Look I adored the Witch books that Audrey publishes under Debora Geary, I liked the novella about sleeping solo (which was was a very cool way to explain to fans why she was changing direction so completely). I even love teal, really I do ... the colour and what it stands for.
BUT and it's a big but .... there are a couple of things I find unforgivable, even in a much loved author ... some notable suggestions on writing include these words ... "Do you insist too much on certain characters traits? Are you telling instead of showing?"
Well, Hell, Yes! On. Both. Counts. Now, seriously stop it Audrey.
If you don't consider 28 mentions of 'flannel' in less than 90 pages to be a contravention of suggestion one then you are no friend of mine!
I get the whole flannel as a metaphor thing ... really ... I do. But 60+ mentions in two very short novellas is lazy writing and annoying and limiting characterisation, and if you hadn't given me so much joy in your previous books this would have received one star.
Carly and Jane, two assassins working in the shadows to make the world a better place for those that need it. This second installment seems to focus on the developing relationships these two "loners" are developing with their new "crew" as Rosie and Lelo join these two in helping another young lady escape a desperately bad situation. The story has a great flow that keeps the reader engaged and let me just say the solution to the problem was brilliant!!! I really enjoyed not only the case but the fact that we got to see our two main assassins develop as characters. Faye begins to open doors and we begin to see who they really are. Whole heartedly recommend this series!
I read the first book and thought it was OK and definitely considered the series had potential for development, especially as this would be quite a departure from the author’s previous books.
Unfortunately I am not sure that this book has taken the series any further. In fact very little happens in this book, with a series title of ‘Lesbian Assassins’ you would expect some action, but this is really about cozy relationships.
I really enjoyed this author’s previous books which were built on cozy relationships, but if she wanted to write this type of book, why did she stop writing the ‘Witch Central’ books. I had hoped this new venture would have a harder edge, over all I think this is a missed opportunity.
Although Jane and Carly are nominally assassins who go about the world either scaring the bad guys straight, or quietly taking them out of the way if they are not redeemable, this second book in the series is a light-hearted romp that involves gooey cinnamon buns and a flannel bikini.
The style is light, but -- as have many of Faye's books -- it touches on very real world issues.
I recieved my copy via email today, and read it in one setting. It was fun -- and the solution to a situation that could have gotten the asssassin team in a whole lot of trouble.
This is the 2nd book I have read in this series and I already have #3 waiting! I really enjoy your way of telling a story and making your characters come alive. I have read read all the Witch Central books ( and adored every one of them!) and the Lesbian Assassins characters could fit into that world and be their interesting new neighbors! I am glad I took a chance and read your new series.......I now look forward to anything else that you might write. Only complaint is that the stories are NOT LONG ENOUGH!
This was a fun continuation of the adventures of the Lesbian Assassins, but I felt like it was too inwardly focused. Very little happens in the book; it's mostly introspection, with only a few pages devoted to the actual problem they're solving. I know all her books are mostly about introspection, but somehow it didn't feel right for the setup -- I expected a much more even mix. I still really enjoyed it, though. :)
I really enjoy Faye's books. Somehow she can pul off what others cannot. Don't be fooled by the title....yes, -there are lesbian characters, yes - they are assassins-ish....no - this is not some lesbian melodrama or romance. Ultimately, Faye does what she does best - tells the story of friendships, bonds between people (particularly women) and holds out models of lovable, flawed struggling characters as they muddle through life's challenges. Super quick read!
The characters of this book are human - imperfect, broken and full of life. Letting others see what they do and why as they try to fight others battles in an effort to heal each other makes a story worth reading.
No matter what nom de plume Audrey Faye writes under her characters are always engaging and leave one thinking "ye gods and little fishes" how long till the next installment?
Just a thrilled with the second installment of this series as the first. Campy, fun, with the shattered leads still moving forward despite their own personal demons. Keep them coming Audrey!
All I needed was an easy read with a decent group of people and a nice ending; this was it. I am enjoying this series as it comes along. I don't have to work hard to get into it
