Dan is a veteran Emergency Medical Technician, currently mentoring Jack, a new employee. When they fail to resuscitate a young nightclubber from a drug overdose, Jack questions if he can handle the job. And while this is far from the first time someone has died under his watch, something has begun to unwind within Dan.

Despite being an average, sports-loving, every-day guy, Dan’ s life starts taking strange directions. After causing issues within his love life, he agrees, at his girlfriend’ s insistence, to see a psychiatrist. Said psychiatrist, Dr. Prescott, takes an unusual interest in Dan’ s situation and begins to invade his client’ s personal life and eventually reveals his own agenda.

Dan’ s newfound obsession with death has crossed into every aspect of his life, causing a major problem with his longtime girlfriend and his job. And as he gets closer to understanding what exactly is happening to him, it appears he’ s not alone in his fascination, as the world itself seems to be entering a new, and final, phase…?

This is one of those books that'll either have you digusted and end up not finishing it or sticking it out to the end and watching the whole tone of the book change. It's better if you're in the latter.

A 35 year ole man has been an EMT for eleven years. He's seen a lot of death and he's in a loving relationship with his girlfriend. Until a 22 year old woman dies from a drug overdose. He immediately becomes obsessed with this woman even though they've never met. And his sexual fantasies become extremely creepy when he's thinking about her. The first half or more of the book deals with his increasingly twisted necrophilia thoughts about this woman and how it affects his relationship with his girlfriend. When his girlfriend discovers his secret, she kicks him out.

It might be easy to assume some things at this point but, I promise, you'll want to keep reading. The ending is a weird, out of control, and bizarre mind fuck which you will never see coming and it's a full on gut punch to the first two thirds of the book. Everything you've read up until that point is twisted around once you get to the end and it's a banger.

While we never find out EXACTLY what's happening, we know enough and it's absolutely unforgettable. I highly recommend it.

This book was a bit different from what I usually read, but I enjoyed the experience, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to read the ARC. It's a story that combines psychological horror, obsession, and personal relationships in a rather unsettling way.

The story follows Dan, a paramedic who begins questioning many things after failing to save a young man's life. Although he's used to dealing with death as part of his job, something changes in him, and his fascination with death starts affecting both his personal life and his relationship with his girlfriend. When he agrees to see a psychiatrist, Dr. Prescott takes a particular interest in his case, and things begin to take an increasingly strange turn.

I found it interesting how the story explores the impact a traumatic experience can have on someone and how something that initially seems like an individual struggle starts turning into something much bigger. I was also intrigued by the mystery surrounding Dr. Prescott and his true intentions, which adds another layer of tension to the plot and makes you want to find out what's really going on.

Although this isn't the kind of story I usually pick up, I enjoyed stepping outside my usual genres and trying something different. The combination of psychological elements, a dark atmosphere, and a plot that becomes increasingly disturbing made it a unique reading experience for me.

I'm truly grateful for the opportunity to read this ARC and discover Nick Cato's work.

The amount of money I would give to be able to see inside Nick Cato’s brain when he was coming up with this plot.

WHAT. A. WHIRLWIND.

This book is morally black. Darker than dark. Incredibly f*cked up. And I consumed every bit of it. I knew it was going to be insane after the 2nd paragraph.

If it were me, I’d characterize the majority of this book as splatter punk, with the end being more sci fi/horror. Either way, it made me feel uncomfortable & shocked & I think that makes for an amazing horror read.

I enjoyed Dans character quite a bit, and Cato does a great job of letting you into Dan’s mind and feelings. But Jesus Christ is there SO MUCH SEX. If people are actually having 4-5 rounds every night, I need to ask what kind of meds they’re on.

Would I recommend this book? Absolutely, to my true horror fans. For the new ones trying out horror for the first time, maybe try something a little more mild. This book deserves nothing but love, & I feel like majority of horror fans will appreciate it.

Thank you NetGalley, the publisher, and Nick Cato for allowing me this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
