Actions during the Civil War have long-reaching consequences...
Elena Tinsmann is one semester away from graduating with her history degree. Her parents inform her she must start planning a wedding - her own. She learns she's engages to the one person who's hurt her most; someone she used to call a friend.
Alec Herr has the world at his feet - all the money he wants and an established business handed to him when he's ready to take over the reins. It's the last thing he wants. When he finds out about the arranged marriage to Elena, he sees it as a chance to follow his own path.
The premise of this story was something I was very unfamiliar with. For starters, arranged marriages are not something people are used to hearing about, let alone read about . Typically I associated them with marriages that occurred hundreds of years ago, but can be rarely found in some cultures today. The one thing I didn't like about the book was it took a while to figure out if the story took place a long time ago or was current. There were a few minor errors in the story, but it's not something I'm going to nitpick over.
The story itself was well written, very descriptive and kept me glued to every page. The dynamic of the two characters Elena and Alec was a constant wave of hot and cold and with just cause. I won't give away anything specific, but I will say this was a surprising take on a romance novel with powerful characters that you will remember for quite some time.
A great read from Melanie Macek! This is the first book I have read by this author and I loved it! I liked the way that the arranged marriage and history came together. I love reading books about mail order bridges and arranged marriage in historical books so for me I enjoyed this one. It did have some twists that I was not expecting.
If you are looking for a great read that is not like all the rest of the books out there, then you definitely want to read this book from Melanie Macek!
Elena is working her way through college...her passion is history... she comes home on break to find out she has been put into an arranged marriage with her once best friend who turned on her in high school. Alec her ex best friend now has to win her back for the sake of the "contract". The "contract" took way too long to be divulged in my opinion...and it was mentioned a wee bit too often. A sweet story, not a lot of angst, with a HEA.
This book was an easy read with a sweet romance. It caught me off guard a bit with the modern day arranged marriage, but once I understood the history of this practice, it made a bit more sense to me.
I can admit that I didn't immediately take to our MCs, but that's a good thing. They convinced me to give them a chance and I ended up liking them. Elena was kind of your average, everyday girl next door. Except for her extreme love of history (which I love too) and her arranged marriage, there wasn't one thing that stood out about her. I could almost say the same for Alec, who had a lot to prove in this book. So if I had to choose the character who held the most interest for me, I would say he did.
My only real peeve is that the great secret of the book took too long to be revealed, and to be honest, I'm still confused as to why a marriage contract was forced because of it. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but maybe I overlooked something that would make it more plausible. One good thing that came out of the secret was that it confirmed an important decision for Alec and made it all the more easier. There were some serious consequences involved with his actions, but overall worth it, I think.
This was a clean romance so there wasn't a lot of spice to it, but it was refreshing for me because I am a dirty romance lover. So if you're into clean romances where the MC's have prior history, resulting in quite a bit of intriguing drama, then this is the book for you. Coupled with a style of writing that doesn't take too much effort to ride the flow of, this book is worth a read!
I won this book in the author's contest during a Facebook party. I enjoyed this book very much since it was a rather unusual topic I did not know much about. The author managed to keep the secret and the intrigue almost until the end of the book, and the historical part of it was rather interesting too. I liked the characters' development - seeing them change under some difficult circumstances.
