I've been a follower of TVS for quite a while, stumbling upon their (then all weird and cluttery) web page with my old mobile phone for the first time.

After a while I bought the Pillars 1.5, a worthy addition in my phase of researching every vocal pedagogy that existed back then and finding the one that will suit my needs.

I didn't understand it, though, and the exercises were very tough for a newbie student that was still wondering what "head voice", "passagio", "mixed voice" were (the usual stumbling blocks).

As my understanding of the voice grew, so did the appreciation for TVS system, and I started to "get it", implementing the exercises while working with my vocal teacher.

Along with Jaime Vendera's book, the TVS material became the staple of the process of rebuilding my voice, a true "vocal bible".
So, when the Pillars 2.0 arrived, I was stoked to check it out (16 gb of lectures and exercises. yummy.), using the upgrade discount.

I got the 2.0 update of the TVS book today and I've read it in just a few sittings.

This book is all about cutting edge vocal pedagogy. A lot has changed, and Robert's further research and hard work emphasizes the use of twang, formants, and a novelty in TVS - modes. Vocal technique graph is one of my favs too.

Complete beginners and students of singing might find the layout confusing - the book goes into great (and, for me - necessary) detail about certain functions and aspects of the voice, and watching the video lectures as a newbie is a MUST (I wish I had those when I was just starting out).

Don't get discouraged. Learning about the voice is a journey of a lifetime, not something that will come to you overnight, grab you, and make you a rock star or whatever you want to be.

It takes dedication to become a true "screaming pillar". Do you have what it takes?

My reason for purchasing "the four pillars singing" program was specifically to learn how to sing with grit in the upper range, and I was struggling to find someone who could adequately teach this. Having seen some of Lunte’s videos on things that he calls “overlay distortion” and “Extreme Scream Pitch” I felt confident that this program would help me get there.

I bought the program from the vocalist studio website. Due to the massive amount of content there was a synchronization software that had to be installed in order to transfer the pdf’s, videos, audio etc. but within the welcome email and an introduction video the process was made fairly simple (it actually took me doing it twice as the first time the sync crapped out half way through).

The webpage-based program is neatly laid out and gives you direct access to lectures, exercises and a starting video that instructs you on the daily warmup routine (Lunte calls “semi-occluded phonations” or “establishing the resonant track”).

After watching this I dove into the 468 page pdf and began watching the lectures which included such topics as: “The Embouchure”, “Falsetto is NOT Your Head Voice”, “Onsets and Sirens”, “The Intrinsic Anchoring Set”, “Mixed Voice is Dead!”, “Vowel Modification”, “Dampening the Larynx and Tuning the Vocal Tract” and of course two of huge interest to me: “Overlay Distortion” and “Extreme Scream Distortion”.

I had to read the book in small sections because (despite the odd spelling mistake) it was very technical. Admittedly I had limited vocal training background but many of the terms being casually used were foreign to me, so I found myself constantly flipping between the material and the terminology section.

What I found however was beyond doing the “foundation building routine” every day I did not really have a lot of direction in terms of working towards my specific vocal goals.

After a couple of months I found that my progress hit a bit of a wall and I wound up going back to the drawing board looking for other vocal trainer who could teach me to scream like the rockers of the 80’s, and found myself signing up for Jaime Vendera’s vocal academy (interestingly Robert Lunte wrote an article in Vendera’s book based on one of his lectures).

Since that point in time I feel my progression has excelled, mainly due to the fact that where Lunte tries to wax technical Vendera attempts to make it as layman as possible, and where Lunte leaves you to make your own path of progression, Vendera opts to guide you forward. In terms of trying to scream those high notes, Jaime’s book and academy have given me far more helpful tools in terms of building the co-ordination and strength to be able to work towards that.

As an instructor, I would say Robert Lunte is equivalent to the Mike Mentzer of the vocal training world. Like Mentzer he is very one-minded in what works and will often bad-mouth his competition (in this case Vendera, Brett Manning, Ken Tamplin and CVT are the ones that I’ve taken note of). Those who take issue with any of his methods seem to become his mortal enemies at which point he has been known to lash out at people including his own students.

The last time I contacted Robert was because supposedly the version of the e-book I had was out of date – I was not emailed or notified of this, it just came up during a random discussion on facebook. I attempted to update the book but it turned out that the synchronization software was no longer being used either.

I’ve given this book 3 starts out of 5 because I believe there is a lot of valuable information here, but I had to dock points for the lack of follow-up support as far as the updates, the difficulty navigating through the material in terms of plotting out my forward progression, and finally because his seeming lack of respect for his peers in the field rubs me the wrong way.

In conclusion I would say this book is suited more to the academically minded aspiring singer who already has a base foundation of vocal terminology and technique, not so much the non-academic who wants simple instruction.
