Summoned by the news of her dying father, Isabel Delilah Jones escapes from New York City, broken hearted and disillusioned, back to her small Mississippi town. She is welcomed smack dab into a bizarre inheritance, a complex war for her affection between two former best friends, a dire haunting from an unknown child, and a deadly mystery that only she can solve.
Yonder is the perfect Southern treat for fans of tangled romance, spooky mysteries and down home cooking. Taking place in the 1940's on the cusp of World War II, Yonder promises a lovely glimpse of an era that was all too short.
LeeAnne Hansen was born in Paris, grew up in Oklahoma and now lives in sunny southern California with her husband and cats. She enjoys writing, acting and playing bass guitar. She can be seen gracing the stage in various theaters or even directing. She is a graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City and has studied art and astronomy. She also thoroughly enjoys long walks on the beach.
My favourite era stretching from the 1920s to the 1940s. Set in USA in the south where love, hardships, secrets and mystery occur. If you ever want to be romanced and spooked at the same time, this book is for you.
I was lucky to have won this book from goodreads.com. I was drawn into it from the start and really resented having to put it down. Isabel see a ghost on her 10th birthday and something terrible happens to her on every birthday afterwards. Her mother dies and her older brother flees their home by enlisting in the army. Her father becomes meaner and she runs away to NYC on her eighteenth birthday. Years later on another birthday she is called home when her father is dying. Her father's will is bizarre, she continues to see the ghost and she must chose between two of her brother's closest friends who both are wooing her. I hope it doesn't take too long for Part 2 to be released. Most likely it will be about Sam and Charles and Charles should have known that something wasn't right with Sam's "wedding", when her entire family disappeared. Highly recommend.
I was lucky enough to receive an e-book copy of Yonder (A Southern Haunting #1) direct from the author LeeAnne Hansen in exchange for an honest review.
Before I get into my review proper, I would just like to say that I think I have found one of my favourite quotes ever, on page 45 the main character Isabel says "There's nothing like the smell of old books. They smell like memories" This is just such a true statement, I think I'm actually going to make myself a bookmark with this on it.
The book is set in the 40's and is about Isabel who is called home from New York due to the death of her father and then becomes intertwined in amorous advances from two of her brothers childhood friends, Benjamin and Charles. All the while she is haunted by a young boy, but why?
The book is rich in details about the time period from the war to the coming out balls. You get the feeling of it being a simpler time right on the cusp of change. It all sets the tone nicely for the story about Isabel.
I really liked Isabel, she's a strong female character who for the most part knows what she wants. She does frustrate me at points with how young she seems, but if you look at the kind of childhood she had and how women were seen in this time, it does make sense. Charles is just awful and pompous and I didn't like him right from the beginning! He is just far too smarmy for my taste, Benjamin however seems to be a southern gentleman who makes the occasional goof. I really liked Benjamin and as you can imagine I was rooting for him throughout the story. The romance is done really well and it didn't feel tacky which is the reason I very rarely read romance books, the romance in Yonder felt real to me. I also have to point out that the love scene is beautifully done, very sensual and I didn't feel embarrassed reading it.
The haunting starts off subtle almost and then it becomes more intense and blatant as time passes. I loved how you could be enjoying a nice simple scene and then all of a sudden the child - Eli, appears and something happens. Isabel is the only one who can see him and she needs to figure out what he wants or what she can do to help him. When you find out who he is (I'm not saying as I don't want to give any spoilers because you need to go read this yourself!) and his story, my heart broke. It was so well written and so well thought out, it takes you by surprise and rips your heart out at the same time.
My only "complaints" - are slightly spoilery
I thoroughly loved this and I am looking forward to the second book already. If you haven't read this yet, you need to go and try it. Thank you to LeeAnne for allowing me the pleasure of reading her book.
It is so hard trying to write a review of Yonder without giving any spoilers but I will do my best. You are best reading this story with no idea of where it might take you I wasn't really sure what to expect from this book, is it a romance? Or a Ghost story? Or something else? All I can tell you is to let go of any expectations, let the story take you by the hand and lead it where it will........ I absolutely loved this book, the author weaves a beautiful, bittersweet story of childhood dreams, heartbreak, loss, revenge and love but not necessarily in that order. This is one of the few books that have brought tears to my eyes, whether they are from sadness or happiness I will let you find out for yourself. The story follows the lives of childhood friends with Isabel being the main character. The characters are so well written they could be real people, the author writes about them as though they are well known and loved friends. Their story is written in full colour, you can see the scenes being described, smell the heavy fragrant air, feeling you really know the characters and being pulled full force into the story. I know people always say "you won't be able to put this book down" but you really won't! It has a lot of secrets and surprises, in fact I decided to stop trying to second guess what was going to happen. For example from early on I thought I knew who Eli was and what happened to him, turns out I was only partly right in who he was the rest was a complete surprise. I really can't praise this book highly enough and I have recommended it to all of my friends. If you are undecided about this book is suggest you buy it, you won't regret it. Sorry if you feel I haven't told you anything about the story but the best way you can read it is by knowing nothing about it, I so hate reviews that tell you either the basic story or spoilers from the book. I can't wait to read the next in the series x
I received this book in return for an honest review. As a southern girl, born and raised in Georgia, but then lived 13 years in Mississippi, coming to Oklahoma from Hurricane Katrina, I saw the author was from Oklahoma at one time, and thought, wow what a coincidence, I should read this. It was everything I hoped it would be. A good Southern ghost story with lots of mystery, intrigue, and romance. Poor Isabel Jones has not had much luck with birthdays. Each one seems to be worse than the last. With an overbearing and just plain mean father, a dead mother and a brother who got out of Mosby, Mississippi as soon as he could and joined the Army. After a disastrous 18th birthday and coming out, Isabel packs her bags and left for New York, hoping to become a serious writer. But in the 1930's and 40's women were not encouraged to write about much besides makeup and hairstyles. Soon she falls in love and after a year or so is expecting a proposal. What she gets is a phone call telling her to come home, her father is dying. Back in Mosby, nursing a broken heart and having to bury her father, she also is getting a lot of attention from her brother's best friends, Charles and Benjamin. For once she revels in all the attention of having both of them chasing her. But she is distracted by a long dead little boy pleading for her help. Isabel has many unanswered questions and everyone in this town has a secret of some kind that they don't want told. This is just one of the best stories I've read set in the south. I was so disappointed when it was over, only to see that there is another book continuing the stories. You become quickly invested in the characters and I for one can't wait to see what comes next!
This book was very interesting. Not what I usually read but it was really good. Definitely a Southern ghost story! I loved the characters with all of their flaws and secrets and their dysfunction relationships. Reminded me of a lot of people I know! LOL! I believe there is a second book coming with a different couples story. I will have to keep my eyes out for it.
The story takes place in the heart of the Deep South in Mississippi from just before the Great Depression to the rumors of WWII. It opens with "snapshots" of Isabel's 10th, 14th, 16th, 18th and 26th birthdays. To Isabel, these birthdays were memorable; but not in a good way. The stage is set and has put into motion the drama and mystery that is about to unfold.
On her 26th birthday, Isabel receives a phone call telling her to "Come home." There was so much static on the phone that she wasn't sure that she had heard correctly. What was more unsettling was she thought she recognized the voice. It was a child's voice from a long time ago. It was the day after her 18th birthday when she suddenly left, no, fled Mosby, Mississippi and never looked back. Now she feels compelled to return.
She returns to her childhood home to find her father dying. She is trying to put pieces back together ...trying to make sense of all that has happened these past eight years. She left NYC amidst fragments of a love and betrayal. Her older brother's two best friends, Benjamin and Charles, are now vying for her attention. Her best friend, Samantha, had left under suspicious circumstances. Why did her brother join the army so soon after their mother's death, abandoning her to their father? Then there is Eli. The little ghost child who has been haunting her since she was ten.
There are social threads woven into the tapestry of this story growing up in the heart of the south; social appearances and standing, there is a hint of "racial order", and the place of women in the home, family and community. There were unwritten rules that all were expected to follow and there were consequences for those who did not.
Yes, there are loves now and long ago, a wandering child ghost, a mystery that reaches beyond the grave, a murder and an attempted murder. Isabel's father, T.L, has a will that will shake the very roots and core of this sleepy southern town. The story ends with more questions. What really happened between Charles and Samantha? Why did Samantha leave Mosby and more importantly, Charles so suddenly? What about Doug? What did he do to earn his father's eternal wrath? Why did he leave so suddenly to join the army? What does Eve have to do with this if anything at all. We do get a hint with a sneak peek from Samantha in the form of "snapshots" of Isabel's 10th and 14th birthdays. Intriguing...
I grew up in a small town. Everyone has secrets; but like everything else in a small town, nothing is what it seems and secrets are never buried forever.
Can you say love? That’s the way I felt about the novel Yonder, the newest offering by author LeeAnne Hanson. Set in pre-WWII Southern Mississippi, this story is the perfect balance of spooky, romantic, fun and heartwarming, and I truly could not have enjoyed it more. In it we find Isabel Delilah Jones, newly returned from New York City to be with her father while he is dying. Dealing with heartbreak of her own, she finds herself also needing to figure out a strange inheritance, attempt to play peacemaker between two former friends, and deal with a haunting from a young child. A child that seems to have a message that might help her figure out the answer to a mystery only she will be able to unravel.
This was such an enchanting read, and I enjoyed it from its front cover through to the last page. I read Yonder all at once, rushing through it with delighted glee. LeeAnne Hanson has a true gift with language, her descriptions of the South in this time period were spot on, and the way she developed the characters will have you truly caring about each of them. There are some steamy scenes as well, and they were exceptionally well done. Yonder will appeal to any reader who loves romance, mystery, intrigue, ghost stories, stories of the South or who just plain loves a good book. I, for one, am thrilled that this book is the first in a series, and simply cannot wait for LeeAnne Hanson’s next book!
Hansen, what a curiosity you have written. At first I didn't like it at all. The main character wasn't likeable at all. Then as the story developed I liked then loved.
Where I thought we had a Southern Plantation version of Twilight, we ended up with a perfectly set romance where the leading lady thankfully picked the right man.
As far as haunting goes, there is very little. It certainly is more about love than a good fright.
The next book is from another characters perspective. Would I read it? I think so. I'm curious to know what happened. There was a lot that went unexplained and I think Sam will answer all those questions.
I really can't put my finger on what made this book so enjoyable. I'm not normally huge on romance and take disappointment hard. I think 'a southern haunting' was a poor choice in book title. It implies it weaves around ghosts. A southern romance, maybe?
I received this book free in exchange for a fair review from GoodReads First Read giveaway.
I was given a gifted copy by Story Cartel in exchange for an honest review. The first time I came across this book on Story Cartel I couldn’t get it so the second time I grabbed it as fast as I could and I must admit I don’t regret it at all. This is the story of Isabel and her miserable birthdays. From her tenth birthday on something happened that ruined her birthdays. On her 26th birthday, her father passed away and she had to go back home where the past caught up with her. Funny, sad, scary and sweet, difficult to put aside and in spite of some editing issues, a book to enjoy. The author left some questions unanswered for next book.
First things first, I love Izzy and Benjamin being together, I knew he always loved her. Now back to your regular scheduled programming...lol
This southern mystery is full of charm and romance as well as twists and turns.. I just didn't know what to expect next... I loved it and I'm definitely looking forward to the next book.
This was such a lovely lovely story. I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this from the author in return for an honest review.
The characters are all so likeable, with their real life secrets, and how open their emotions are. They story itself is enthralling, unpredictable (to a certain extent) and so easy to follow.
I recived a free copy from Storycartel in exchange of my review. I just love this book. I was drawn into it from the start until the end. It is full of romance, mistery, humor: make you travel on time to that time of the story it is very well set.
Another good one from author LeeAnne Hansen! A strong, intensely likeable heroine, plot twists to delight any reader, this book is the perfect read for any fan of spooky tales. Deliciously satisfying!
Yonder is one of the few books which I found difficult to leave until finished. I've loved the twists and turns in the story and specially the way the author revealed the mystery. I find this book more than worth to read despite a few odd things that can be easily overlooked..
Overall: 5 of 5 stars Performance: 5 of 5 stars Story: 5 of 5 stars Reviewed: 07-31-23
Part mystery, part ghost story, and part love story, “Yonder” spins a enthrallingly entertaining web that captured my interest instantly, and then held me fast until every last mystery was solved, and every ghost laid to rest! The feeling of authenticity in this story was incredible! The characters, the situations, the dialogue, EVERYTHING felt real! I’m not going into plot/sub plot details for fear of playing spoiler. I don’t want to ruin ANYTHING, especially the many surprises packed into this hauntingly fabulous story! I can say that the exquisitely defined characters and meticulous scene setting fit the period of the story perfectly, and that the “feel” of that era is not only incredibly present, but comes across loud and clear! Also, know that you can listen with confidence to this fantastic, emotional, suspenseful, riveting story because come the reveal, it all makes sense, you won’t have any unanswered questions, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll feel better for the journey! The narration along the way is stunning perfection! Voicing choices emotionally perfect, and beautifully fitting each characters personality, remaining consistent throughout! I particularly liked that the pauses between chapters were long enough for me to grasp that there was indeed a new chapter beginning! “Yonder” was a thoroughly enjoyable listen! Five fabulous stars! I loved it!
I've still got goosebumps and the hair on my neck is standing at attention .... WOW! Talk about being haunted! This book has it all - haunting, murder, mysteries a-plenty, twisted romances, an evil father, a crazy mother, a little boy lost, really amazing characters and a well-told story. This is the kind of book that will keep you reading or listening and eager to find out what will happen in the end. I loved everything about it including the narration of the audiobook. Not only does LeeAnne do a splendid job as an author, she also seems to have just the right kind of control over her voice as a narrator as she easily changes it and the accents according to the various characters and brings them to life. A story well worth reading or listening to! I voluntarily listened to a free copy of the audiobook which I requested and received from the author and the above is my unbiased review.
I was in the fence about this one because it’s out of my normal reading wheel house but decided to give it try. It is read and narrators bring the author and she did quite well. Even her singing voice is smooth and relaxing. This is a ghost story with a side of a love triangle. I loved the main character and her grit. Her drama was over the top sometimes but mostly fit the ages in which the story was currently in (6,10,16 and so on). It’s set in the early 1900’s was fun to jump to a different era. My biggest things were there were some slow spots for me at least and while like stated earlier she did quite well with the singing there was just to much for me. I enjoyed the push and pull. The fact that the main character was determined to break social norms and not be out in a cute brainless box was a huge win in my book. There’s some things you don’t see coming and the end ties all the major points up nicely. Leaving just enough to intrigue you into the next book.
I sorry to say that I listened to this book instead of reading it. I’m sure if I hadn’t had to to suffer through the amateurish reading by the author that I would have given this book 5 Stars. This was a great story, but I always read two books at a time. I read one and listen to the other. I bought this book from audible so I had to listen to it. I’m certainly going to read the sequel because I want to know about Charles and Samantha. However, I still cringe when I think of listening to LeeAnne sing.
my dear LeeAnne, is there anything you cannot do? you can narrate (I already knew that) you can act, you can sing and you can write! you are also a funny, beautiful and interesting woman and I am so blessed to e-know you. this book, was mysterious, funny at times, sensual, romantic, inspiring, sad and happy all together. I loved all the characters and how beautifully detailed every scene was. it was like watching a movie! and you were right, by the end of the book I started liking Charles too. looking forward to book two!! wonderful job, I LOVED it!
This was a really good book.Isobel has had no luck on her birthday, ever. When her mothr dies she is left with a father who just wants her out of the way.She has two boys in her life from an early age. They both decide they want her and it never seems to work out.Oh and there is a ghost boy who shows up when Isobel is in trouble. It is a twisted tale of family and murder narrated nicely by the author.“I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.”
Absolutely fantastic book, such a heartwarming story of love, lost and true friendship into lovers. I really enjoyed listening to this book via audio book. I would recommend this book.
Bad birthdays. I hadn't expected to enjoy this audiobook as much as I did. Although it was a bit slow to get going, it built throughout to a skillful ending. I was glad I was listening to the audiobook, excellently narrated by the author.
Set during the build-up to WWII, the scene is set to follow Isabel Delilah Jones through a number of catastrophic birthdays and the fall-out from these dismal celebrations. After the death of her mother, she is raised by a tyrannical father and runs away on her eighteenth birthday, to start a new life in New York. She doesn't return to her family home until the death of her father, who leaves a bizarre inheritance to his family and friends. I loved the chapter where the inheritance is explained, I listened to it twice so as not to miss anything.
The characters were fascinating, especially Isabel and her two admirers, Charles and Benjamin. There is also a ghost, a young boy named Eli, whose identity we learn towards the end of the book. He is such a sad, bereft little boy, searching for his mother.
There are a few questions left unanswered and although I know there is a sequel where they may eventually be explained, this was still frustrating. Hopefully this will also be available on Audible, as I'd love to have it read to me by the author.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I think LeaAnne Hansen has done it again. Another captivating story with some mystery and intrigue. I think she has a thing for ghost stories, but I don’t mind. A love triangle, miserable birthdays and paranormal aspects make it all so believable. It feels as though it is a part of history for this small Southern town and not a fiction book. It is so well-written that I was immediately captivated by the story and enjoyed how Hansen brought everything to life in my mind. I had to give it five stars. I definitely cannot want for the sequels to come out! Hurry up already, LeeAnne! :)
I loved how this book started out with the series of miserable birthdays for Isabel Jones. The book finally picked up when Isabel arrived in her home town in Mississippi. Her father is at death's door and she had to deal with his funeral and the will reading. Her brother's best friend Benjamin showed up. He is concerned for Isabel because her father has just passed away and wants to help her. He felt as though it was his duty to protect her. I am trying really hard to not give anything away. But Charles came back into the picture, along with Benjamin, and obviously there is a little love triangle going on between them. Charles tried to charm his way into Isabel's life again, while Benjamin has always been Isabel's stable and trustworthy friend. We see the differences between the dates the men take Isabel on. You can tell there is obviously a deeper connection between Benjamin and Isabel, than Charles and Isabel. Isabel finally gets her chance with her dream guy, Charles. But it made me root for Benjamin the entire time. You can tell there is only friendship meant for Charles and Isabel. Benjamin was somewhat the underdog. Ah, the love triangle. They were all invited to the reading of TJ's will (Isabel's father). There were other interesting attendees invited, which made the story all twisted, in my opinion. I honestly did not see that happening while I was reading. I honestly don't know what about this story is so captivating to me. I love the love triangle, the mysterious Eli showing up throughout the book, and the mysterious provisions behind Isabel's father will.
Obviously, I am having a hard time writing this review because words just cannot express how quickly I finished this book, but it took me forever to write the review. Writer's block of the reviewer. I am glad that I am finally getting around to finishing it and cannot wait to see the next Southern Haunting by LeeAnne.
I read LeeAnne Hansen's first book Ghost Light earlier this year and it made quite an impression on me, she has a gift for capturing the atmosphere and surroundings for ghost stories and keeping the suspense going all the way to the end. My favourite thing about LeeAnne's books however is her characters, you can tell that she knows each one inside and out. She shares this knowledge and fondness with you and you can intensely feel everything her characters do throughout - there's never a single character you completely dislike because they've been created with so much empathy that you can see the light in them even when they do terrible things.
In this story, Isabel receives a phonecall from a literal ghost from her past, telling her to return to her childhood home. Shortly after she gets there, her estranged father dies and she stays in her brother's absence for the reading of the will, catching up with her childhood friends.
Hansen sets the scene with great charm and detail, you get a very strong feeling for the Southern Mississippi town that Isabel grew up in - I've watched enough True Blood to know authentic Southern hospitality when I see/read it (Alan Ball would never lie to me, right?).
When Isabel gets back home, she reacquaints herself with her two best friends growing up, Benjamin and Charles, and finds herself in the middle of an intense love triangle. Dare I say it, I actually loved the romantic aspect of this book, even though I'm not usually a fan of the soppy the haunting provides a perfect counterbalance. While Isabel tries to decide which one of the boys to give her heart to, strange things start going bump in the night (so to speak) in her house until it all finally reaches a dramatic climax. The last 20% of the book - best thing about Kindles is that you know how much you have left! - had me sitting bolt upright and forgetting to blink so that I could stuff it all in my brain as quickly as possible.
The author doesn't travel the same worn paths as your typical ghost stories so they keep you guessing right until the very end - I absolutely love this as you do find cliches do start getting a bit worn when you're constantly reading books within the same genre. I was overjoyed to learn while reading this book that it's the first in a series and the second one will be written from the perspective of another major character.
NOTE: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This book had a little bit of everything for me. It had romance, history, spook, and mystery. The best part about it was that the author wrote the book so well that I felt like I was actually there. The book was provided for me through audible. I usually am not a fan of "listening" to books, but after this book I have definitely changed my mind. LeeAnne Hansen definitely has a voice for audio books and I really enjoyed listening to her read the story. I could not quit listening! I listened to it on my 45 minute drive to and from work, during my work shift, and even caught myself sitting in the car in my driveway waiting for the chapter to finish because I couldn't quite cut it off yet. All of the characters were believable and I found myself rooting for some while hating others and hoped they would get theirs in the end. The ending was perfect and unpredictable. It was definitely quite a shocker. The book was well-written and the storyline was easy to follow. The setting was described so well it was impossible not to feel like you were in the book yourself. My mother, who reviews books, asked me what was something I did not like about the book. My response to her question was that it ended. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to the next one by this author.
Birthdays are supposed to be the best day of our year, right? The one day where our wishes come true while surrounded by those we love... for Isabel, her "series of miserable birthdays" plagues her from childhood into adulthood. Whether it be through a serial haunting by a mysterious young boy or unrequited love, she becomes as increasingly sympathetic protagonist as we go through the snapshots of her life along with her and her three companions.
Fast forward to Isabel now in her 20s living in New York being summoned back to Mississippi to her estranged father's deathbed. She is thrown headfirst into a complicated inheritance, a love triangle between her brother's two childhood best friends, and an increasingly mysterious ghost whose story could change the lives of Isabel and her friends forever.
LeAnne Hansen has woven the stories of these four characters from childhood into adulthood in a way that leaves you wanting more from each. I look forward to seeing what comes next when the Southern Haunting Series continues...
The author created some really interesting characters -a self-centred drama queen, a kind boy who grew into a compassionate young man, a rich somewhat selfish boy who turned out to be less so on both counts, a southern vamp and a wicked father. Sad, little Eli who floats through the story is a mystery that became an obsession to be solved. This apparently sweet story set in the United States south in the early part of the 20th century has a definite underlay of violence and sorrow.
The climax to the story was particularly well done. By that time you would have figured out what was happening but it was a thrill to see it all unfold.
I listened on Audible (first time experience!), LeeAnne changed her voice to reflect the different characters and the narrative. Although quite long (10 hours), it wasn't hard to listen. Her singing voice is pleasant and broke up what could have become the monotony of a speaking voice. Hearing popular songs of the time definitely helps establish the period.
I received the story free of charge for an honest review.
I first read Ghost Light by this author and loved it. The author takes the reader back to a time of Agatha Christie meets Susan Hill a traditional story of lives in the American South each telling their own story down the years with subtle twists and turns that you know somehow will be linked you're just not sure how. The main character Isabel appears to being haunted. ...or is she...is she being warned. .. I read late into the early hours on many occasion just to find out what that latest piece of the story meant. I don't like to give too much details but this is such a good read, you will come to many conclusions, but will it be the right ones I read the kindle version and am now hooked by the trailer for book 2
I received this free in exchange for an honest review. It was a little different to my normal reading, which is something I have been aiming for, so took a short while to settle into. But once I did I really enjoyed it. The four star rating may be a little unfair as I found listening a little difficult at times, often becoming distracted. So that's not the fault of the writer, but still I was asked to review. I also had trouble with the accent occasionally. Whilst an enchanting accent, to my U.K ear, a tiny bit confusing at times. For example, I wondered why they were covering the 'meers' and what were they anyway meerkats maybe. Then I realised it was actually mirrors! But all that apart, I enjoyed the book and would recommend.
