The Mysterious Mind: How to Use Ancient Wisdom and Modern Science to Heal Your Headaches and Reclaim Your Health

Rate this book
One book. Thousands of years of wisdom. Finally, a solution to your suffering.

When most people hear the word "disease," they think of something deadly, uncontrollable and swift -- like cancer. But we're facing an epidemic of "dis-ease" -- of Americans simply feeling unwell and unable to embrace the lives they want to lead. They're tired, overweight, and inflamed. They're dealing with ongoing digestive issues like constipation or diarrhea (or both), and they aren't sleeping well. And many are suffering from regular and sometimes debilitating headaches.

"I just don't feel healthy," you might say. You look in the mirror and think, "What happened to the strong, vibrant person I was in my teens, 20s, 30s? Where has she gone and how do I get her back?" Getting back to a healthy you requires understanding your natural state. Only when you know what a balanced self looks like can you identify the symptoms of imbalance and make appropriate changes to reverse the trajectory of poor health. In ancient Ayurvedic medicine, these natural states are called Doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Your Dosha is the key to your health. This book will help you identify it and make meaningful changes for a strong, pain-free, healthy life. The Mysterious Mind is a groundbreaking and surprisingly simple answer to a complex medical problem. It combines ancient wisdom with modern medicine to help you heal your pain and discomfort, and reclaim your life. Based on the career insights of board-certified neurologist Dr. Trupti Gokani, this book tackles the questions you have assumed might go unanswered forever.

* Why do I get HEADACHES and how can I prevent them? Why do some of my attacks have nausea, light sensitivity and are located in my temples, yet other involve my neck and back of my head and include sound sensitivity?

* Is it normal to be CONSTIPATED all the time? Is there a link between the gut and the brain?

* Isn't there something I can do to cure my ACHING JOINTS? What causes body pain? How is it linked to the digestive system?

* Why can't I seem to get my MOODS in balance? Why does my mind always feel anxious and restless?

* What would it take for me to not feel so STRESSED OUT all the time? Is there such a thing as adrenal fatigue? Do I have it?

* Isn't there something I can do about my INSOMNIA? How is this linked to impaired liver detoxification and imbalanced adrenals?

* Are there certain foods I can eat or ways I can prepare my foods to help BALANCE my mind and body? What about herbals and nutrients that can bring me into balance?

Dr. Gokani graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Illinois with degrees in Economics & Biology. She later earned her medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she also completed her training in Neurology, was Chief Resident, and pursued additional post-doctoral training and certification as a Master Clinical Psychopharmacologist through the Neuroscience Education Institute. Her early bout with insomnia in medical school led her down a path of studying eastern forms of healing, specifically Ayurveda, for twenty-five years. She initially pursued formal training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. At that time she joined forces with another integrative practitioner and started an integrative wellness center. During this time she managed a team of practitioners ranging from massage therapists and nutritionists to acupuncturists and physical therapists. Dr. Gokani became certified in IV Nutritional Therapy and offered this therapy as a bridge for those struggling to restore energy, vitality, and reduce pain. At this time started practicing Transcendental Meditation in hopes to share this wisdom with her patients. During this contemplative time, she felt a draw to further study the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda. Due to her early exposure and personal transformation with this science, she decided to become certified in Ayurveda. She thus completed certification as an Ayurvedic Wellness & Nutrition Counselor through Kerala Academy. She then later pursued additional advanced training in Ayurveda through the Maharishi Health Professional Ayurveda Practitioner Program in conjunction with Scripps Hospital. In addition to these certifications, she trained in Pranic Healing and Chakra analysis to further pursue the mind. Her passion for understanding the physical-mental-emotional-spiritual connection to health led her to delve deeper into NLP training.

As mentioned above, most recently, she has become a Master Practitioner of Neurolinguistic Programming and is becoming certified as an Integrative NLP Coach. Despite all of her work in complementary medicine, she has maintained her vigor for studying western neurology and completed board recertification for Neurology & Psychiatry. She is medically certified by the American Board of Neurology & Psychiatry and is licensed to practice in Illinois and California. Due to her passion for education and training, she had become one of the leading faculty trainers for leading pharmaceutical companies such as Teva Pharmaceuticals and has been a local or national speaker for Allergan, Abbvie, Biohaven, Lundbeck, Merck, Pfizer, Glaxo, and Astra-Zenica pharmaceuticals. She has been married for 24 years and has two children, Ariya and Arman, along with her dog Blue. She resides in the northern suburbs of Chicago. Dr. Gokani published her first book, The Mysterious Mind, in 2015 and is working on her second book. She is available for speaking engagements and media appearances in addition to private coaching intensives. Please visit her website for more information.

Migraine Help

Dr Gokani gets it. She has actually treated and helped the complex and horrible types of rare migraines so many neurologists have only thrown pills at or given up on treating. Her mix of experience and research on neurology, functional medicine, and Ayurvedic medicine give her a unique perspective on patients with migraine. This book has quizzes, plans, and information, not just case studies, but it’s easy to understand.

She has good information, but I felt like she could have expounded a lot more on what to eat for each dosha. I didn't really learn anything new in the book, but it is a good starting place for healing from migraine. It just lacks details to really accomplish that goal. However, I did appreciate that she has good research and balances western and eastern medicine well. It's not full of fluff or just telling people what they want to hear like so many migraine books are.

Very insightful read...

What powerful insight into how our bodies work on an Ayurvedic level. Very well written for the practitioner and lay person as well. Can't wait to do some further research and use the information to help bring healing.

Book Review: The Mysterious Mind by Dr. Trupti Gokani

A Revelatory Fusion of Ancient and Modern Healing
As an avid reader of health and wellness literature, The Mysterious Mind struck me as a rare gem that bridges the gap between Eastern wisdom and Western medicine with remarkable clarity. Dr. Gokani’s dual expertise as a neurologist and Ayurvedic practitioner shines through every chapter, offering not just information but transformation.

Why It Resonated
The book’s core premise—that headaches and chronic pain are often manifestations of deeper imbalances—challenged my assumptions about symptom management. Dr. Gokani’s personal journey lends authenticity; her writing carries the warmth of a trusted physician and the precision of a scientist.

Particularly powerful were the sections on mind-body-spirit alignment. The Ayurvedic principles, presented without exoticism, felt immediately applicable. One exercise involving breathwork and self-reflection had such a profound effect on my tension headaches that I found myself recommending it to friends before finishing the book.

Constructive Feedback

-Structural Flow: While rich in content, the transition between scientific studies and Ayurvedic practices occasionally felt abrupt—a stronger narrative thread could enhance cohesion.
-Case Studies: More patient anecdotes (beyond the author’s own experiences) would illustrate the protocols’ real-world impact.
-Visual Aids: Given the complexity of some concepts, diagrams or summary charts might help readers retain actionable steps.

The Lasting Impact
This isn’t just a health manual—it’s an invitation to reclaim agency over your wellbeing. Dr. Gokani’s unique voice (equal parts compassionate and no-nonsense) makes even dense neurological concepts accessible. By the final page, I’d shifted from seeing my occasional migraines as random occurrences to understanding them as meaningful signals.

Thank you to the publisher and Goodreads Giveaways for this gifted copy. Fans of The Stress Rx (Dr. Gokani’s other work) or integrative health titles like The Mind-Gut Connection will find this equally enlightening.

Rating: 4.5/5 (A groundbreaking synthesis that could change how we view chronic pain—would benefit from slightly tighter organization.)

Note: The book’s emphasis on prevention over suppression aligns beautifully with modern functional medicine, making it a timely read for our overmedicated era.

I picked this up because I saw Dr. Gokani do an online talk about ayurveda at a migraine summit. This book is good if you want more details on biochemistry and diagrams associated with that, but if you just want to know your dosha and a plan for imbalances, you can get that for free from banyan botanicals. I'm completely unaffiliated with them and don't plan to buy anything from them (just found them with a google search), but they have a simple dosha test and a way to see any imbalances with a simple plan to help you feel better (without the need to buy their products). You do have to create an ayurvedic profile - and yes you have to give them your email, but I was willing to do this - and I'm happy I did since the info seems to be concise and easy to follow. The biggest issue I had with this book is that I really need a simple plan to go ahead with - something like a cheatsheet at the back would be helpful - such as do this for pitta imbalance with a bullet point list to make it easier to incorporate. There were some sections that seemed to be helpful, but then they referred to other sections that were less clear about specific actions. What would be great is to have a three day plan to get you started with sample diets and specific yoga/meditations that could help. I realize that different things might work for different people, but if you are struggling with severe migraines, you may not have the energy to piece together a plan from bits provided here and there throughout the book, and it would be helpful to have a very clear plan to begin with and see what does and doesn't seem to help after you try the prescribed plan for a period of time.
