When Katherine Armstrong arranges a birthday weekend on her husband's private island in the Everglades, she plans for the guest list, the menu, the flowers, the careful distance between herself and the dark water beyond the dock.
She does not plan for the storm.
By nightfall, the power is gone, the mainland is unreachable, and something in the mangrove shadows has begun to move. Katherine has spent years building a life that looks flawless from the outside. Now, with her children beside her and the water on every side, she will have to decide what that life was actually worth.
Sixty years earlier, a World War II veteran named Conrad Boone made a decision on these same waters — one that seemed containable, even necessary, at the time. He passed the consequence of that decision to his family. They learned to live with it. And the island learned to keep its secrets.
Until the storm.
The Glades moves between a Florida that no longer exists and a Florida that is drowning in its own inheritance, between a man who thought he could manage what he'd done and a woman who never knew there was anything to manage. What lives beneath the water has been patient for sixty years.
Writers probably shouldn't write reviews of their own books, so I'll explain why I wrote this story. I saw a YouTube video about Nile crocodiles in the Everglades--and since Florida is my home state (I'm a native!), I was concerned. Turns out that the video exaggerated the risk, but they HAVE pulled Nile crocs out of that "river of grass," so the exaggeration isn't as great as I first thought.
How did they get there? What can we do to stop them from taking over? Because they definitely would--they are apex predators.
But this is a book about more than crocodiles--I had to imagine the people who care for the Everglades, and the people who use (and abuse) them. So I wrote a dual-time novel about the two groups who live and work and play in that area, and the price all of them pay for their actions. This is a thriller, but I believe it is also a testimony to human and divine faithfulness, as well as a warning.
If you enjoy venturing into wild, unexplored places, this book is for you!
“Ladies and gentlemen, Welcome to the wild side.” …. where not every guest is welcome.
I was looking forward to a trip to Armstrong Island and a chance to get my adrenaline flowing and my heart pounding after a week of sweet romance reads.
While the setting was vividly described and the tone was foreboding, I didn’t get the rush that I was expecting from the romantic suspense books I usually read. I’m not sure I’d classify it as a thriller, either.
Despite not being thrilled by this story, it was still an interesting read and I will continue to enjoy the author’s biblical fiction novels.
If a dual timeline, a focus on the people of the Everglades, and an examination of what happens when the past catches up to the present appeal to you, take a chance to explore.
I was gifted this copy and was under no obligation to provide a review.
I couldn’t put this book down. The desires of man and the consequences of their bad decisions take center stage in The Glades. It brought out the point that generations of choices can have devastating effects.
In the end, one character had tried to right their wrongs and make restitution. Another had a shift in the way they live their life. Going through tragedy can sometimes change someone for the better. And even in the midst of everything, God never leaves us.
Interesting and ominous setting.
I think I may be dreaming of crocodiles for a while.
I received an advanced electronic copy from the author. All opinions are my own.
I absolutely loved this story! The idea that someone would try to keep such dangerous animals as "pets" is WILD to me. I loved all the South Florida references for obvious reasons.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. Oh my what an exciting book. Once I started it was hard to put down. I had no idea there were truly Nile crocodiles in Florida. This book showed the consequences of a choice that one man made and how it affected the next generations. So very good!
This book was excellent. It kept me reading and I couldn't stop till it was finished. I enjoyed the Florida aspects as well as the historical and local culture elements it included. I read this book in less than 24 hours. It really kept my attention and I thought the plot line very interesting.
I received and advance copy from Netgalley Thank you.
A story that goes back years, when it wasn't against the law and then it was? So much heart ache and loss, and for what? So a rich man can have a novelty? Yes, the book grabbed me, and sure didn't let go until the last page is turned. The author does highlight Miccosukee and Seminole Indian tribes, the native American people of Florida, and I loved the way they were included into this read. If you enjoy heart pumping read, this one will keep you riveted, from betrayal to missing people. Whom are your real friends? We are really rubbing shoulders with the rich in this read. Money is no object, and breaking the law is for everyone else. I received this book though the Author, and was not required to give a positive review.
Can I complain for just a moment? Why do I ask? I’ll complain where and when I want. But I think it is a valid complaint, and I wonder if anyone else has experienced this and pray it’s not a new theme in writing. This is the second newly published book I’ve read in just about as many months that just read awkward. Omniscient people, especially children, that seem to always do the thing the way they do it. Short, almost staccato sentences. While they do help build the idea of tension and suspense, they drag away from truly building a story that you can immerse into. While I was gripped by the slow-burn tension that is this book, I feel like I missed out on getting to know the real characters because they were sometimes omniscient and many times dulled by the aforementioned complaint.
Two families intertwined by a dark, deadly, kinda illegal secret for three generations. It started simply enough with a wealthy man who thought he could do whatever he wanted because . . . money, and a poor man who just wanted to support his family. And like these things do, it got out of hand. Tragically out of hand. I did struggle, initially, with the dual timeline and keeping the characters straight, but once the idea of the story settled in- the thing you are meant to figure out but not yet know how it’s going to play out- I was a lot more engaged. I loved that I wasn’t told all the things I needed to know. I was shown those things to some degree, and given all the info I needed to figure it out without having to be obviously shown.
It’s hard to think that I read a thriller that met all the qualifications I like in a thriller and was also a slow burn. There was no in-your-face rapid chaos. It built over time- generations, actually- planting seeds for an outcome you knew was coming but wasn’t sure how it was coming. I felt like the ending was a bit rushed while still not giving a neat little bow on everything perfectly ordered. Angela Hunt has proven you can write a thriller with threads of faith, not being overly graphic, and still build tension in a way that is masterful. I kept turning pages, way past bedtime, because while I knew I needed to know. And that is what makes a great book.
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by NetGalley. I was not compensated for this review and all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own. I was not required to write a positive review.
Christian Suspense is a genre that I enjoy a lot. The Glades by Angela Hunt is the most recent book I have read. The novel is also a Dual-Time Novel and Dual Time really intrigues me.
WOW, this was definitely a book that I couldn't put down until I finished the book. The settings is a Private Island in the Florida Everglades. The main character is Katherine Armstrong. Katherine is one who likes to be prepared for everything, including her Birthday weekend in the Everglades. The one thing she didn't prepare for was a Storm coming through the Island. The Storm was strong and caused disruption of Power on the Island and other damage to the island. The happening prompts Katherine to look at how she has lived her life and if life will look the same in the future for herself and her children. She loves the island, yet is afraid of water and she is fearful when she hears things moving in the mangroves. The storms also uncovered some LONG Kept secrets of the Island. World War II veteran named Conrad Boone stood on the same island Sixty years before Katherine. Conrad made some decisions that would affect many generations to come. There was mystery and suspense in both the present day and the past. I really LOVE that Faith was strong in this storyline, especially with Katherine leaning on God to help her through the storms of life. The message contained within the storyline of this book is that God will uplift us and never leave us through the Storms. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Mystery and Dual-Time novels. GREAT BOOK!
The Glades by Angela Hunt – A Book Review If a trip through the Everglades in Florida is on your bucket list, this story may make you think twice. Or maybe not—if you like to be scared! Though entirely fictional, this is a very believable tale of Nile crocodiles, never meant to live in Florida, transplanted to a remote, privately owned island in the Everglades at the whim of a wealthy “nature lover.” The New York gentleman employs a local man to build a lagoon and watch over his island—and the crocs. At first, it seemed like a small thing. After all, they were only a couple of feet long and weighed about as much as a house cat. But as the crocs grew, the owner aged, and his family grew less and less interested in both the island and the creatures he had brought there. Family secrets, storms of life, and storms of nature all collide in this engrossing story. It made me gasp, hold my breath, and even imagine I was hearing crocs in my own yard—though the sound was actually coming from an ad for the book on my computer. The characters wrestle with faith, listening for God’s voice, and balancing their responsibility to their families with the risks of caring for the island. This is another one of Angela Hunt’s masterful stories, one that draws you in from the first page. I could see the mangroves, feel the humidity, swat at the imagined mosquitos in The Glades, and feel the pain of the characters as they face life and all its trials. I give it two thumbs up!
Can we correct or change what happened due to our choices and decisions of earlier years? Can we face our fears when it matters? What matters the most to us when we are in the middle of a storm? Will it even make a difference? These are some of the questions I had while reading The Glades. But I found out that sometimes we don't know the answer to these questions until we are caught in the storm. The Glades by Angela Hunt introduces us to the Boone and Armstrong families, whose secrets and choices affect others in unexpected ways. Set mostly in the Florida Everglades the story spans a time period from 1958 until 2027 (present time in the book). The story is seamlessly interwoven over the time period and seen through the eyes of the characters especially Micco, Yuna, and Katherine Armstrong. You see how family legacy is formed through jobs passed down in the Boone family; just as an island is passed down through the generations in the Armstrong family. The Glades is a story of family, relationships and also a story of friendship and healing, which comes in the storm. This is a fictional story written around an article in Florida Museum Research News from 2016. The Glades grabbed my attention from the very beginning and I had a had time putting the book down. I finished it in two days. A five star read for me. I received an advanced copy of this book from Netgalley for my honest review. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. with ANGELA HUNT as the author of her newest Christian Fiction/Thriller, I was “chomping at the bits” (bad pun) to read this. I have every book by her on my Kindle. I have read many of them. Her Bible fiction is Amazing, though SO different! Now to “The Glades.” We know what is going to happen, but we don’t know. From beginning to end, I found myself not wanting step foot outside, both in the book and in reality! Katherine is wealthy, but not in the least a snob. She truly treasures her friends more than her mansion and wants them to enjoy a unique birthday with her on this special island. The mangroves are creepy, but the sunsets are spectacular. The mansion is one of-a-kind even to other rich folks, but it’s also lonely. She only resides there for short spells; she usually just “vacations” there with her two children. She adores her children. She is afraid of water. Having lived in Florida for a short time, I really can “see” the river and the mangroves. Also, the beauty. The slides. I despise gators. I would not have a croc purse if given to me. Though I despise these critters, I love Angela Hunt! I’m thinking “what story can she possibly write .. …about Them? And like it!?” She did. I loved it! Watch the teaser on this book of “Run, Katherine, Run.”
This is the first book that I have read by this author and I must say it was not what I was expecting it to be but its one of the best storytelling stories that I have read. It touched something in my soul.
The Glades is not your typical thriller and it took me totally by surprise. I was expecting this to be a locked room isolated on an island psychological thriller reading the summary but it ended up being a thought-provoking, choices and consequences, cultural/historical elements and some christian themes wrapped up into a soul touching story. One of the best books that I have read this year and highly recommend. I couldn't quit reading it, took me just a few hours because I couldn't put it down... I read a lot of popcorn thrillers that are entertaining but this was several layers above that kind of story. The characters are so well written, the story is so well woven together from the past and present days and you follow the men of two different families and the consequences of their choices on those around them. Throw in some wild beasts and that made it so interesting and intriguing. I was hooked from the beginning and all the way to the ending.
Thank you Netgalley and Hunt Haven Press/IBPA for the complimentary copy of the story.
This book needs to be made into a movie! Jaws, everglades edition! Ms. Hunt is a new-to-me author, and is now one of my favorite authors! Her knowledge of the ‘glades, of Indian culture, of life through generations makes this story vibrant and real and authentic. Her characters leap off the page with their actions and words and emotions. The storyline is all too plausible, if not actually true. Ms. Hunt builds the tension and supense page after page, word after word. The author endeared Micco to the reader from the moment we meet him. And Yuna, quiet yet impactful to the story. The eccentricity of the first Victor Armstrong. The indifference of Junior, and then of Trey. Lives lost, risks taken, heroes made. Yet a hero who has lost so much does not revel in it. Would that I could have read non-stop—and would have done if it were possible.

This book was well written and fast paced. It was interesting to learn about crocodiles and about the Everglades in Florida. I enjoyed this story and would recommend it to friends. I am reading an early release copy and was asked to give a review but not told how to write it so I can review it on my own. It is a wonderful book fast paced and full of action as well as lots of information on the Florida Everglades. I enjoyed the characters.
Book #80 of 2026: I’m struggling and unsure how to review this novel. All I can do is share my honest opinion. The blurb is only in reference to the present day timeline and one of the main characters from that. Present day is listed as 2027 which is odd considering this is an October 2026 release and this is not a futuristic book. The *party* and the *family mystery* are a small part of the entire book in my opinion.
A large chunk of the book is in the past from about 1958 to the teens of the 2000s, featuring Conrad/Connie, and then his son, Micco. What I expected from the book description and what I read didn’t really mesh together well.
The timelines flip around but Connie and Micco (esp.) were the predominant main characters for me, not Katherine. She seemed like a piece that didn’t make much sense until later. Sort of. In some respects, I felt like I was reading 3 somewhat connected stories with no all-around resolve in the end.
I never really understood where the story was going. It was disjointed for me and I still felt a sense of confusion at the end as to what the point was to it all. Nile crocs are bad and the association to them was bad. That’s not a mystery but an easy assumption. Some aspects to each of the 3 stories felt unnecessary to the book. There were too many things going on in each timeline, a lot of characters to keep straight, and it didn’t feel wrapped up for me in the end. Even my review seems confusing, sorry.
I did learn many things about the tribal traditions and knowledge of the Indian people from Betty’s family. I also appreciated the interesting info and drama with the monstrous Nile alligators. Connie’s studies and Micco taking over in his father’s footsteps was also interesting. It’s for these items that I gave the 3.25 stars. The one quote that I really appreciated was, “Some things are easier to carry than to set down.”
I’m also admittedly comparing this to other books I’ve liked by this author and this just wasn’t my cup of tea.
*** My thanks to Hunt Haven/author for an electronic advance copy of this novel. My rating and review are both voluntary, honest, and in my own words.
This book was amazing! I had to research if Nile crocodiles are actually in the Everglades, and they are. The reader knows early on that crocodiles are going to attack, but the story line to get the reader there was excellent. The descriptions were mesmerizing. I couldn’t put it down. I love a good suspense story and this was definitely one I won’t be forgetting for a long time!
This book really caught me by surprise! I didn't expect this type of storyline from Hunt and it kept me on my toes in all the best ways. Throughout the book I kept thinking "Oh this is where it gets corny and the stereotypical storyline comes out." Boy was I wrong. Great writing, as always, and Hunt kept me on my toes the entire time.
Exceptional thriller that is well-constructed and developed. Truly, I wanted more...the rest of the story, if you will...because I want to know how the characters are now. Angela Hunt delivered a great read that is safe for the whole family. There is so much I want to discuss about it, too, so it would be a fantastic book.club read!
Imagine a choice you made affecting generations to come. This story brings the reality of those consequences to life. This was a wild time! I loved how descriptive the writing was and how so many local details were added in. But the crocodiles, oh my goodness! Could you imagine?! This wasn’t what I was expecting, but it was everything I needed!
Thank you so much Angela Hunt and Netgalley for the gifted arc in exchange for my honest review!
I am ALWAYS down to read a book about a vacation/retreat gone wrong! And this was a solid sort of vacation thriller for me.
This had a pace that kept me interested (and I think that's the most important aspect of a thriller/mystery) and complex characters and character dynamics. I think that also helps to keep my invested. And I think a lot of readers will agree with that assessment of this story.
This does have dual timelines, but it wasn't too hard to follow. (And sometimes, they can be.)
Thanks to NetGalley for the e-ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!
A birthday party on a secluded island in the Everglades is the perfect closed-circuit mystery setup. The island holds a secret that will come into full view during this fateful birthday weekend.
This book bounces between storylines giving readers a glimpse into the past and the secret that will come to haunt those spending the weekend on the island. Readers see three generations of Armstrong men – what their quest for power produces – and how they treat those in their employment.
There is a crazy story twist near the last quarter of the book that I didn’t see coming.
This is a story about man against nature. About relationships gone sour. About God’s mercy in the middle of tragedy. About forgiveness.
It’s dark and heavy, but there’s a message of hope threaded throughout the story.
If you like suspense – especially man against nature – you should pick up this book.
I received a copy from NetGalley. All opinions expressed are my own.
This was a well paced dual timeline story that had a touch of suspense/intensity and was primarily character driven. The story starts in modern day when Katherine Armstrong requests the presence of her 2 closest friends for a birthday party at the large house on her husband's private island. When the weather wreaks havoc, they learn that it is not the only danger they face. We then travel back in time to when Victor Armstrong the first came to the island and we see how the choices he and his hired caretaker made impact the current day. I enjoyed the perspectives of the father and son caretakers of the island and how they weighed their choices. This book had multiple points of view, mostly 3rd person, but Yuna's perspective was in first person. I did not find this difficult to follow because it was primarily 3rd person, and the timeline changes were easy to follow as well. The faith thread in this story was lighter than some of the author's other works, but was still present, particularly in one of the friends invited to the party. And I enjoyed her take towards the end of the story on the perceived guilt felt by another. If you enjoy character-driven stories with unique and diverse characters and some intense scenes, this is one I can easily recommend. Special thanks to the author for an advance e-copy of this novel. I was under no obligation to provide a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.
I could not stop reading this Florida Everglades thriller story-Jurassic Park meets Nile Crocodiles! I love visiting my family in Florida and this story was one of my worst nightmares come true!
The chapters go back and forth between present day and the late 1950s when Connie, who is known for being the best guide in the everglades, meets Victor Armstrong. Victor wants Connie to become his caretaker of Armstrong Island and help him raise his imported (secret) Nile Crocodiles. Over the years we see how Connie learns and takes care of the family of 4 Niles and then eventually his son Micco takes over as caregiver. Three generations of Armstrongs come and go from the Island where the present-day story picks up.
Micco and his granddaughter Yuna are trapped on the Island with Mrs. Armstrong, her kids and friends. After a deadly storm comes through, they have to figure out how to survive the crocodiles lurking underneath and make it back off the Island alive.
This fast paced, clean thriller was AMAZING and hard to put down! I really enjoyed reading it and getting to know the characters and how the Everglades helped shape their futures and beliefs.

I read The Glades by Angela Hunt in two days. I couldn't put it down. Even though I suspected what would happen, I had to keep reading to find out (in several cases) I was wrong about my suspicions.
Not only does the book have a strong element of suspense, it also carries a tangled story line of relationships over several generations, friendships, betrayal, redemption, and forgiveness.
Are there crocodiles? Yes, and they even have names! Are they menacing? Of course. After all, we are in Florida on a small private island in the Ten Thousand Islands area, surrounded by mangroves.
Are there likable characters? Yes, many. They come from diverse backgrounds and ethnicity. They each have their quirks and are believable in the story.
I highly recommend this book. It was everything I hoped it would be for a book called The Glades. The suspense kept me reading, some characters had me pulling for them while others made me mad, and the story of redemption and forgiveness that is subtly woven through was just enough to tie it all together.
I was offered an advance copy of this book and asked for an honest review.
The Glades by Angela Hunt is a Christian thriller that takes you on a trip through time in Florida’s Everglades that you won’t soon forget! Sixty years ago, one man’s arrogance and sense of entitlement led him to buy Nile crocodiles and enclose them on his own private island in the Florida Everglades just for his own sense of having something exotic…something no one else had. That choice affected the following generations in ways that, even if he’d known the effects, he would still have made the same choice. His self-centeredness (and future deception) affects not only his own family, but that of the caretaker chosen to keep his crocodiles and secrets safe.
There is so much to love about The Glades! It is a real page-turner! Though it took me a little while to fully get into the story and to keep the people straight, once I did, I couldn’t put it down and read it in less than a day. The remote setting just adds to the darkness that you can feel exists on the island, even when the crocodiles are no longer “housed” there. There’s a reason for that, but you’ll have to discover it by reading it yourself.
I can’t do the book justice without spoilers, and it’s a must read for you if you are a fan of the Christian thriller genre. It’s in the genre for a reason, so if you can’t handle books with death and fearful situations, you might want to skip it. I love how Hunt weaves faith into the book while still creating an extremely suspenseful, scary story, and I highly recommend it!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Gulp. I can’t remember the last time I read a book that had me so on edge. If I would’ve known what was lurking beneath the surface I probably would not have read this book!! This story is intense, terrifying, and more. A real Thriller. But different than any I’ve read before. And it gave me a new appreciation for The Everglades. (But I might never want to go there again!! The characters were down to earth and very realistic. I enjoyed both timelines, and loved seeing how it all tied together. There is so much going on in this story. Expect the unexpected! One last word of caution - Be aware of the danger before you read! ;)

Angela Hunt's The Glades is her best yet! I know how much research she does for her stories and learning some facts about crocodiles was a little unnerving. I won't say too much here because I don't want to spoil the story for you, but I will say this: it was hard for me to put it down. I didn't finish it in one day because I started reading late. I had to call it a night so I could get up for work in the morning. I really liked the protagonist, Katherine, and how she came through each of her trials.
I live in Louisiana and I've never gone swimming in a bayou. Now I know why I've been hesitant.
I read an early release copy and was asked to give a review but not told how to write it. So my review is mine own.
Katherine Armstrong has a birthday party at her home in Florida. Her two best friends are invited and a few guests. During a powerful storm, one of the workers on the island goes missing. The story goes into the different families and how the Nile crocodiles are brought to Florida and the dramatic rescue by Micco, the caretaker.
I enjoyed reading this story, the history of the Miccosukee and Seminole Indian tribes living in Forida, and about the Nile crocodiles. The book was hard to put down!
Interesting read: This book was both thrilling and scary given that certain events felt totally plausible. The author did a fantastic job of describing the setting and it felt as if I was right there in the Everglades alongside the characters. I enjoyed the dual timeline feature and exploring how certain actions can have long lasting and generational consequences. There was also a good message about trusting God during the storms of our lives. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions expressed are solely my own.
