I just have to say that Tor's marketing for this series is absolute genius. They released the first book, Eve of Darkness, at the end of April. This one, Eve of Destruction, followed on June 1, and the finale, Eve of Chaos, came out on June 30. I call this genius marketing because they are perfect beach reads and it's hard to imagine having to wait a year (or more) for the next installment. I think the series would probably lose momentum if the reader had to wait for the next volume.
Eve of Destruction starts off after the first scene of Eve of Darkness. (The first book starts at the end and the rest of the story is told as a flashback.) In Eve of Destruction, Eve is coming to terms with having been chosen as a Mark and is beginning her serious training as a hunter of infernals. We learn a lot more about the nature of angels, marks, and infernals. The story zips right along. It's an episode of Ghost Hunters at Camp Crystal Lake. It's got a good mystery and some surprising twists.
Fortunately, I have the third book already. I'll probably start it at the gym tonight.
I'm not sure where I sit on this series. There are definitely some pros, but there are many cons. First, this is a pretty large book for the urban fantasy genre at 418 pages. By itself that doesn't make much difference, but when you compare it to the amount of plot progression you are left with a bit too much filler. On one hand, I enjoy that the author planned out a trilogy and knew exactly what was going into each book before publishing. On the other hand, I really think the "trilogy" could have been edited down. It definitely would have benefited from less love story and more plot progression. I am eager to find out more about the grand scheme of things and less about the main character's romantic life. Also, I found the use of two names for each character a tad confusing. Some may not have this problem, especially if they read the books right after one another. I read the first book so long ago that I have a hard time telling Cain, Abel, Reed, Alec, Gadara and Raguel apart. I had to constantly remind myself that Abel is Reed and so on. The author will refer to him as Abel in one sentence and Reed the very next. It doesn't help. One plus side to Eve of Destruction is the presentation. I was not a fan of the way the first book was presented, so I am happy that Eve of Destruction takes place in the present time. What really bothers me though is the characters and the romance. I felt that the majority of the book was Eve trying to decide which man she wanted to be with, and in the end not really making any decision at all. I understand where each character is coming from, but I would like more progression and less rehashing of the same thing. In that respect, I also felt that the majority of the characters were being a little dense in this book. No one listens to Eve's ideas or problems, and they don't even feel bad when people die because they are being close minded. Oh well, on to the positives.
I like this series for it's originality. Being marked to slay demons while struggling with faith and love is a tough thing, and it's presented well in this series. The archangels act differently than humans, and I appreciate that. The characters are not perfect and they do get hurt. A bonus to this book is that Eve comes up with the solution to multiple mysteries and acts on her own to save the day. No angels coming in and scooping her out this time. Well, maybe once. She is new to the trade so I don't expect her to be super tough and jaded. Her uniqueness as a mark is an interesting part of the story that I can't wait to read more about. Overall, this series is original and entertaining. The downside is the heavy reliance on the romantic side of things with very little progression. I feel that the pace is a bit slow, and there are a bit too many unimportant details, but I'm not too upset because it really seems that the author planned everything well. Hopefully, there will be more closure in the next book, but I am not counting on it.
Well, well, well. Another winner from S.J. Day in her 'Marked' series, "Eve of Destruction" packs plenty of mystery, action, hot lust, and suspense into 414 pages of reading pleasure. I would caution readers NOT to try and begin the trilogy with this story, book two. Instead, go ahead and splurge--cough up the seven bucks and hang on for the ride.
Book two picks up right where "Eve of Darkness" left off--Eve has been toasted (literally!) by a dragon. But it seems she has some information Heaven needs, so even though she should be dead...she's alive. Eve is pretty sure her growing feelings for Cain and Abel of Biblical infamy also had something to do with her current state, but she's not about to argue about it! Now it's time for newly 'marked' Eve to head to training camp and learn how to battle the forces of Evil. What she actually runs into is death, mayhem, dislike, jealousy, mental menage, and ah yes...destruction. There are quite a few stunning surprises, and I can hardly bear to wait another twelve days to get my hands on book three.
This is one kick-a$$ series. The plot is still unfolding, although the reader isn't left hanging. Eve is still torn between the brothers, but there are some big changes in the relationships. It's also cool to find out more about S.J. Day's angels and where each fits into the scheme of things in her world. I honestly can't find anything unflattering to say about this story. Maybe a little more sex...but what there is, is definitely smokin'. There's no dead spots, no jerky transitions, and no halt to the plot. "Eve of Destruction" is simply another riveting read.
I liked the first volume of the series and I confess that I was curious to read what would happen after such an end. We find all our characters in a different story. Indeed, while Cain is sent to investigate the facts that took place in the first volume, Eve must take courses in order to become a true Mark. Yet nothing will happen as planned …
As everyone went their own ways, Cain realizes that some paranormal creatures act in a very strange way. Trying to understand what is going on, he will have to leave Eve behind to discover the truth. Meanwhile, our heroine is taking classes with other people like her on an abandoned basis. The problems begin to become more delicate when one of the members is killed and it seems that this is only the beginning.
It was a pretty nice volume and it was quite different to see the characters on their own although Abel joined Eve very quickly (which will add to the complications already present, it must be said). I was curious, I have to say, to understand exactly what was happening and who the culprit behind all these deaths was.
As I said, a lot of things happen in this second volume and I admit to being surprised by a few, especially about Cain. I really wonder how the whole thing will be settled because the situation has been completely changed. I now need to read the third and last volume!
The twist in this book was good. I knew something was going to happen but it kept me guessing. The love triangle however is getting annoying. I like both Reed and Alec although I think I prefer Reed, however her relationships with them are getting out of hand. Whenever it seems like one is the better fit something happens and ugh. Aside from that the book was pretty decent.
Sometimes when I read the first book it's catching, but as you read on the next book it just kinds of lags for me and therefore I really kind of lose interest. Hopefully I will get to complete this series at a later date.
Better than the first but still not excellent! The last couple of chapters are where the action happens and where the plot picks up. Moving onto book 3.
I'm thinking this could have been condensed waaaaay down if they eliminated the senseless fluff.
Also, it's getting hard to keep track of the characters because they bounce between Cain, Alec, Reed, Abel, etc sooooo much.
Anywho, book 2 was definitely better than 1, hopefully 3 is even better.
Well readers, we are back again!! Time to review another fabulous book by Sylvia Day, this time Eve of Destruction; the fantastic sequel to Eve of Darkness.
In my opinion, this book is ten times better than Eve of Darkness, and I LOVED that book!! This book is full of drama, jealousy, action, and overall awesomeness!! The Postivies I really love that we see Eve more in this book on her own; rather than with a babysitter all of the time (ie Alec, Reed, her mother). She gets a chance to shine among her peers and show that she is worthy of all the craziness that is surrounding her. Because of this, we learn more of her strengths and weaknesses and we get a snapshot of how strong she will be in the next book, which rocks. I am excited that we get to know Reed better in this book. In the last book, he really seems like an arogant jerk who only wants to "bed" Eve to make his brother jealous and ultimatley bring Alec down. In the sequel, he is still arogant and "jerky" at times, but we understand why. That he has trust issues and is scared of his true feelings. He never wanted to like Eve, but he seems to be growing attached and that is scary. He doesn't seem like the type to not be in control, and so when he loses control he freaks out and goes into jerk mode. He is just a typical guy....with wings :) I also really like that we see the Marks in the field in this novel. The whole "Mark" world is really new and is not something that has been written about by any author that I have read, so it was time to see what the fuss was all about. It is really intense when you get right down to what all the cadets have to do in order to erase their sins. Day was really creative with this aspect of the story. She has an awesome voice, and it shows!! I am excited that we get to get a visual in our heads about Hell and that we get to meet the devil! That may sound weird, but in book one we really didn't know the true evil. So I am happy that we are now aquainted with the devil and his minions. It makes for good reading! The Negatives There are not really too many negatives to report (because this book is GRRREEEATT!!) but I do feel like I should mention a few. I was not happy with the lack of Alec in this book. I mean he was there...but not THERE. I was really liking the whole Alec/Eve relationship that was building in book one, and I feel like she went away from it in book two. I mean, we do have interaction, but they seem to be losing their way. Especially with what happens toward the end (I won't give the spoiler...read and find out!!) I am not looking foward to reading more about the Alec/Eve/Reed love triangle. It just creeps me out that she is "bedding" two brothers (mentally I might add) and I feel like that it will only get more creepy as the series progresses. I hope I am not wrong :) The Verdict Get this book!! And then read the next one !!! I know I will!!
This series just keeps getting better and better. Eve seems to become more confident with herself as time is going on. She takes the advice of the guys and trusts her gut which leads them all in a way they didn't think was possible and made it so that she was able to figure things out that even the archangels couldn't contemplate.
I love to watch things heat up between Eve and Cain and Abel. While the guys do have genuine feelings for her, they both want to use her to get ahead in their world and inflict pain on the other brother. She does is best to stand up to them both and not be the chew toy in their dogfight. I also like how she is aware of her own conflicted feelings and can see both the good and bad in each one of them. At first I had my idea of who I wanted to see her with, but now I am not sure.
I can't wait to pick up the next book to see what happens next!!
Contains spoilers: I have really enjoyed the series thus far. The continuous sibling rivalry (with celestial powers) between Abel and Cain is almost as hilarious as Eve's adventures. And an archangel with a cellphone playing Handels hallelujah- lol! I am starting to get a bad feeling about Cains ancestry, though. When you take into the account the lilins who call him "brother", Sammaels reaction, and the color of his wings, I am beginning to wonder if Cain just maybe, has some archangel blood running through his veins... Cant wait to see how this plays out in book 3. One letdown, though- as a Norwegian, I felt a little offended when a demon of Norwegian ancestry, startes counting in SWEDISH! After all; Sweden and Norway are the Cain and Abel of the Nordic countries, so boooo!
I'm glad that I discovered the Crossfire and Renegade Angels series before the Marked series because I don't think I'd have loved Sylvia Day as much as I do if I hadn't.
I didn't like the first book Eve of Darkness, but I finished it anyway thinking that I just didn't get it. And so I started book two Eve of Destruction. Was really optimistic after the first few chapters but then it kinda went downhill. I think I just still don't get it. There's so much going on and everyone's powers and abilities get really confusing, however the dilemma Eve finds herself in with the two brothers is intriguing and enough to make you keep reading.
I loved the last eight pages, Finally the Sylvia I love returns sparking a little bit of hope for a more positive read for book three - Eve of Chaos.
A staggering disappointment. The main character does nothing for the first 349 pages other than tell us how hot she is and how everyone either loves her or is jealous. All action happens off camera. When it does happen, it's lame. By all rights, the main character should have been killed again for stupidity. People pop in and out of room to remove a necklace that no one has noticed before now. She leaves her only weapon AGAIN to face the ultimate infernal unarmed. At the end an unnamed woman shows up in the same type and color car as eve and crashes it the same way. With all the vague pronouns, it was hard to tell who was doing what.

Continuing onwards to Book 2 in the series has Eve beginning her training and going with her Training Class for new Marks on a "fieldtrip" to a deserted military base. As you would think, both Alec and Reed are arguing over whether or not they will be able to accompany her on this journey, but both are told to stay away. Alec gets an assignment to take out the Alpha Charles in Northern California and Reed is busy trying to get some backup to help protect Eve.
And while this is all occurring, Eve is not feeling well but this is dismissed by Raquel and Reed........hmmmm, that's curious. Trainees begin dying and not in simple ways but gruesomely. The only one who seems to have a realistic idea of what is happening is Eve, but what does she know?
There is a very unusual occurrence that happens between Eve, Reed and Alec and this new tie between them complicates things in a very unusual way. Things are changing and there are many, many different plotlines going on at the same time.
I am liking this series so far, even though Eve gets on my nerves every so often but not too much for me to stop now. Interesting politics are in play and some of what is going on is brought to light near the end of this book. Onwards to book 3.....
So, not sure what's going on here but this book barely kept my interest. IDK why the FMC is actually becoming less interesting as her story evolves. There's just too many similarities between other book series I have read and it's starting to feel overly derivative. The whole world building feels like 1 part Brotherhood of the Black Dagger, one part Buffy the Vampire Slayer along with some kind of biblical mishmash which makes very little sense at all. Kind of a trail mix of paranormal creatures and half realized romantic tropes that take up a lot of space but doesn't really go anywhere. There's not much suspense or danger if you can just be brought back to life anytime you get killed. The Caine/Able thing which should work better is flailing along too. Which brother is the true love match, the one who dresses in suits or the one who rides a motorcycle, because other than that they seem pretty much interchangeable. Hopefully Eve of Chaos will do something to respark my interest.
This book was okay. It wasn’t as good as the first one. I felt like there were too many characters and the plot got lost a bit. While I liked seeing Eve come into her own more, I didn’t like the lack of Alec in this book. While Able has grown on me, I believe Alec and Eve are end game. The love triangle is getting too convoluted for me. I don’t like how she wants a physical relationship with both brothers. Them being related just makes it icky and I feel like she’s jerking both men around really bad, especially Alec. She needs to make a choice once and for all and the men need to accept it.
I’ll continue on with the series because I’m invested at this point but I’m not eagerly awaiting the next one. These books are missing the sexual and emotional intensity you expect from Sylvia Day books like the Crossfire series. It’s making it harder to enjoy it especially when the world she’s building is interesting but is not fulfilling its potential.
I have a love-hate feeling with the triumvirate of Alec Cain - Eve Hollis - Reed Abel. I love how strong their souls were connected as if all three of them were one unit. Just like Eve, I love both men. How can any female resist Cain and Abel? But I hate that because Eve loves one man and covets the other, it hurts both men, or all three of them in the process. They were all suffering in their own ways because of their strong bonds with each other. Sometimes it's so complicated that I think a ménage a trois is inevitable. But will the brothers willingly share without killing the other? There is the whole business of demon slaying and vanquishing but for me, this is only secondary. What kept me hooked in the Marked Series was the Cain-Eve-Abel story and where it will lead. So, on to the 3rd book, Eve of Chaos.
Another great read from S.J Day’s Marked Series. I am a huge fan or urban fantasy and loved this book. The first book in this series ‘Eve of Darkness’ was a real winner for me and reading book 2 ‘Eve of Destruction’ was so much better with the story line. But I am really starting to get annoyed with the 3 way love triangle between Cain, Eve & Abel. I know that Eve will have very strong feelings for both of them but she has mentioned several times throughout the book that she is a one man woman but yet she keeps playing the brothers. She has a jealousy moment over Cain when he mentions that he is with the Mare but yet she is making out with Abel. Talk about double standards. Other then this frustrating triangle I really loved reading this book and can’t wait to read ‘Eve of Chaos’.
I Can't Take It Anymore! I hung on through the longest flash back ever, ready to see what happened after the dragon fight, but found myself extremely disappointed. This story reaffirmed my distaste for love triangles. It's a bummer because I loved Day's Crossfire series
side note: both stories had the male love interest move in next door -- and heroine names were Evangeline "Eve" and Eva....hmmmm...sensing recurrent themes! (I'm sure there were more similarities, but these two really stood out).
Solidly in the "love triangle zone". If you don't like them, don't read this book. Both guys are super hot, of course, but the main character has commit issues to match theirs. Fun whodunit, and plot kept me reading but overall a bit lackluster. Left it on a total cliff-hanger too, which is annoying.
I really enjoyed this book, much more than the first one. But there a few errors I noticed in the spelling and in some of the details. One page said one thing and the other page said another thing. The editing was not done well on this book, but other than that it was better than the first in my opinion!
Sadly this story just didn’t have the tension and excitement the first one did. Our heroine spends too much time in an abandoned townhome “in training” thinking about what’s going on and not enough time figuring it out and doing things. Also first book: a 7-day sexed up marathon in the first 50 pages and a stairwell rendezvous. Second book: Sandpaper dry spell.
This is quite literally THE WORST book I have ever read. If zero stars were an option that is what I would give it. Poorly written. The intended story line would be great, but it was unfortunately not put together in an engaging manner. I don't see myself reading the third.
I liked this better then the first book. It has more plot and since it didn't skip timelines it was easier to follow the story. I do feel that the erotic tones where missing in this book, but it has a much better story line then the first.
