Rex Canyon writes suspense-driven fiction about people caught at the point where law, justice, violence, and personal conviction collide. His work ranges from historically grounded Westerns to contemporary political suspense, but across genres his stories share a fascination with crime, moral consequence, and what happens when ordinary systems of order begin to fail.
He is the author of the ongoing Coldiron series, which follows Jesse Coldiron Newton, a former soldier turned Texas Ranger in post–Civil War Texas, as he pursues killers, thieves, and fugitives across the nineteenth-century frontier. From Fort Griffin, the notorious “Babylon of the Brazos,” to the drought-stricken Llano Estacado and the Rio Grande, Canyon draws extensively from actual people, crimes, places, and events to build stories rooted in documented history.
On October 6, 2026, Canyon released his first venture outside the western genre, a political suspense thriller titled -30-, set in present-day Kansas City. Canyon explores a very different landscape but many of the same questions that run through his Westerns: What happens when people lose faith in the institutions meant to protect them? Where is the line between justice and vengeance? And how quickly can one violent act become something much larger?
Whether writing about Texas Rangers, frontier outlaws, modern investigators, or a country divided by anger and distrust, Canyon combines suspense, character, and action with stories about choices and their consequences.
His newsletter, The Canyon Chronicles, takes readers behind the books, with historical research, background on real people and events, new releases, works in progress, and other news from the worlds he writes about.
