I know we usually drool, rave and rant about the romantic love in these books but with this story you know what filled my heart even more, stood out to me more and made me smile more? The love of community, the love of a village. This story was curated beautifully with love, loyalty, and support from family, friends, and the extensions of those families and friends. It was the most captivating thing of this entire book for me. The way these people held down Cairo and Kamilla during every high and every low can stand to be jealous of. They were right by their side for EVERY season of their lives, and I loved that soooo much. It was nothing but real niggas & real bitches in this book, on Azul.
Cairo and Kamilla. Hella heart eyes for these two 😍. They way they seen each other, heard each other, calmed each other, balanced each other- I shed so many tears because this the type of love people yearn for. There’s so much to say that can’t be said without technically spoiling the book, but I will say if you know Pynnie’s pen you know she gave us another banger. It’s rare that I rate books 6 stars, but this one? Worth it. Read it. Immediately.

She did it again
Readers, I can not tell you how much this story stole my heart. Again, I don't know anything about street life or untoward activities... but this author knows how to tell an urban fiction with a measure of class. From the very start, this couple was it for me. I knew Kamilla would be fine with Cairo. His street creeds were activated when they were needed. Kamilla was taught by a legend. The pair made beautiful music together. 4.5 stars...

I had the absolute honor of reading an ARC of Just Like Summer by my girl Aubree Pynn, and baby…
I loved this one BAD. 😭❤️
We start off by meeting Kamilla Palmer, who is grieving the loss of both of her parents while also trying to figure out her purpose and where she fits in this new version of her life.
She’s currently staying with her aunt and fake cousin—who she cannot stand—and Kamilla’s plan is simple: keep her head down, stay out of the way, and make it until it’s time for her to start school.
Unfortunately for her, life has other plans.
When Kamilla suddenly finds herself being held at gunpoint, she’s forced to face the terrifying realization that no one is coming to save her.
Or so she thinks.
Enter Cairo Hendrix.
Now Cairo is known in the streets for having most of his screws missing. 😂
He’s not the man you play with, and everybody around him knows it.
So when he catches a group of young boys robbing a store and holding innocent people at gunpoint, Cairo immediately puts a stop to the foolishness.
What he isn’t expecting is for the beautiful young woman who caught his eye to pass out afterward.
So now he has no choice but to rescue her and bring her with him.
What Cairo thinks is simply him doing a good deed turns into something neither of them could’ve anticipated.
Because these two aren’t as disconnected as they originally believe.
Cairo was actually mentored by Kamilla’s father.
So while Kamilla is grieving the loss of her parents, Cairo is also grieving the loss of the man who became a father figure to him.
And this is one of the things I love most about Aubree’s writing.
She’s always going to give us that fated connection.
I’m normally not the biggest fan of insta-love, but the way AP writes it feels different because there is always something deeper connecting the characters. There is shared history. There is purpose. There is this feeling that their lives were always meant to intersect, even if neither of them understood why at first.
And I eat it up every single time.
Now…
I was NOT expecting Side A to end the way it did.
So the second we got into Side B?
Oh, I already knew Cairo was about to come in GUNS BLAZING. 👏🏾👏🏾
And he absolutely did.
But underneath all the chaos, what really made this story special to me was the emotional connection between Cairo and Kamilla.
There is something so beautiful about finding your person.
Someone who actually sees you for who you are—not the representative you show the rest of the world.
Someone you can finally let your guard down with.
Someone who knows your flaws, your grief, your fears, your baggage… and still chooses to love you fully.
That’s one of the most beautiful things we can experience as humans, and I loved watching Cairo and Kamilla find that in each other.
But what made it even better was that they didn’t only find that kind of love within their romantic relationship.
They found it in the people surrounding them too.
I LOVE solid side characters, and AP gave us exactly that.
Kamilla enters this story feeling like she’s essentially alone in the world. But once she becomes immersed in Cairo’s life, she gains so much more than a boyfriend.
She gains protection.
She gains community.
She gains people who genuinely care about her.
She gains a family.
And after everything she’d lost, watching her find somewhere she belonged was beautiful.
Aubree packed so much into this story without making any of it feel forced.
We got strangers-to-lovers.
Fated mates.
Forced proximity.
A little workplace romance.
Secret baby.
Found family.
Grief.
Healing.
And a man who is absolutely willing to crash out over his woman.
What more could I ask for? 😂
AP gave us romance, action, heart, family, and just enough mess to keep me locked in from beginning to end.
I ate up every second of Just Like Summer.
Five stars, easily.
And Aubree?
Yeah…
You did your BIG ONE with this one. 👏🏾❤️

4.5⭐
I will never doubt AP's pen ever, because this was one of my favorite reads of 2026. I got all the feels ☺️
While Summer is in the title, this still makes my cozy reads list the way I was swooning for these two characters.
This story starts off a bit heavy, the FMC Kahmilla, is not handling her recent grief well. She has moved in with her aunt in LO and is having a hard time even getting out of bed some days. The one day she goes outside to the store, trouble finds her, but then also her biggest protector in the form of an Azul Cairo. Cairo dealing with his own darkness, is drawn to Kahmilla and starts to look out for her and one thing led to another.
I love when a street ninja is tough and feared in the streets, but when he finds the right woman, he is completely soft on her. The way Cairo protected but also gave Milla a safe space from the beginning, instantly one of my favorite MMC's. AP also has a way of writing FMC's who was dealt a hard hand but once they get their footing, they tend to sore and I love that as well. I loved the small pocket of moments they had together and their playful banter. One of my favorite moments is Cairo teaching Kahmilla how to cuss, I was cracking up. Of course, being in the streets comes with backstabbing, plotting, and someone always trying to take what they think belong to them, but I loved the friendship with the Nate & Dania specifically. They stood 10 toes down and supported and everyone need friends like that, who become family.
A love that survives over time, Love how these 2 people made a plan to steal the moon together and did what they had to, to reach that goal both individually and together. Kahmilla levelled up both emotionally and mentally. AP does a good job writing a female who not just wait for a man and hold him down but actually take what they have and flip it 10x over. I could go on and on but I really enjoyed this book and this story and its one of my favorite reads of the year. On Azul.

Solid 4.5 stars
Kamila is HEAVY in grief when she literally walks right into a convenience store robbery. 😭 Girl passes out—and in walks Cairo. C4. 🥵
And when I tell you Cairo can move around the city almost untouchable, even in gang territory… whew. This man is HIM. 😂
We’ve got:
✨ Slow burn
✨ Friends to lovers
✨ Virgin FMC
✨ Good girl/bad boy
✨ Secret baby 👀
✨ Redemption/ Grace
I’ll be honest, this one really picked up for me around the 50% mark. Cairo taking the fall for Kamila’s naivety had me like 🥺
Then Kamila steals the moon. 🥰🥰
And listen… just because Kamila is “green” doesn’t mean she’s dumb. I loved watching her realize her own intelligence and learn how important it is to surround herself with like-minded people. Finding out she’s the daughter of a hood legend added another layer, and Cairo’s connection to her dad? Kismet. It just felt like everything was falling into place exactly how it was supposed to.
Now Aunt J… TRASH. 🗑️
And her play cousin Martez? EVEN WORSE. 😒
My favorite characters were definitely Dania and Haddon. I also LOVED Cairo’s friendship with Nate. Those friendships brought such a good balance to the story.
But WHEW… THAT SECRET. 😩😭
One thing I can always count on with Aubree Pynn is that she’s going to put her characters through IT, but she’s also going to remind us about redemption, grace, love, and second chances.
And most importantly… we are GUARANTEED a HEA! ❤️

This was a coming of age story for Kamilla. Product of the hood but not born in the hood. After the loss of both her parents, Kamilla is now living in the hood in CK territory but catches the eye of the Azul leader, Cario. I enjoyed Kamilla and Cario love journey. They had to separate for Kamilla to find her voice and I’m so happy she did.
Both are grieving but found each other and created a found family.

Stealing the Moon
I LOVED Just Like Summer. It was a story of triumphant love, even if it took a temporary pause.
I always love when the Mmc is everything, which I did love Cairo. However, the fmc Kamilla stole my heart. She was young, freshly graduated from high school, and had experienced so much loss. Even when she was at her lowest she brought everyone up with her. Kamilla made decisions grown women wouldn't be able to make and put everyone she loved in position to grow. Although, her dream was slightly altered she was really able to steal the moon for both her and Cairo in just five years. She was a real grinder, an uplifter, a multiplier if you will. The way she looked out for her chosen family, while dealing with heartbreak and still needing to be present for her son was just everything.
Little KP, man that's my dude. I loved his little smart mouth self. His momma gave him the game and his daddy gave him the sauce. It was clear it was in him deeply. I was so happy to witness their family growth, their love expanding it was just so beautiful.
I would only change a few things ..first being the cover. The story was so inspiring and while I like it, it does not give hood/urban romance. I needed to see big curls in the fmcs hair and some blue flags somewhere , on Azul. Lastly, I would have loved to see on page their wedding? Or even the birth or possibly them out as a new family, just something more. Overall, I loved it.

When I say this book was GOOD, baby… I MEAN GOOD! 🔥
Kamilla has suffered traumatic losses that force her to uproot her entire life, while Cairo’s brutal childhood molded him into the dangerous man he is today. Two people carrying more pain than they know what to do with somehow find a connection and a little comfort in each other. But if you know anything about life, you already know… peace never lasts too long. 👀
Kamilla is the definition of ride-or-die! She had me rooting for her the entire time. And one of the things I loved most about this story was the reminder that family isn’t always about blood. Sometimes the people you share DNA with can hurt you the deepest, while the people you meet along the way become your real family.
And let me tell you… their village was NEXT LEVEL! Everybody was getting it out the mud, and every character brought something to this complicated, messy, addictive story. Nobody felt like they were just there taking up space.
This book had pain, loyalty, survival, love, betrayal, and enough twists to keep me locked in. I couldn’t put it down!
🔥 One of the best urban fiction reads I’ve picked up all summer!
If you’re looking for a story with characters who will have you stressed, invested, and yelling at the pages… ADD THIS ONE TO YOUR TBR! 📚🔥

He was trying to claw his way out of the streets.
She was wrapped in darkness, searching for the light.
Will one rash decision derail their happily-ever-after?
I'm familiar with Aubree’s pen, but I haven't read anything from her in a while because we all have the same problem: too many books and not enough time. When I saw this trending on social media, I decided to stop everything and read it. It turned out to be a beautiful story. I enjoy stories with six degrees of separation—just when you think you understand who’s who, another connection reveals itself, adding more pieces to the puzzle. I am eagerly awaiting the chance to meet the other characters in this world. In my opinion, if you loved "Watercolors" by Evelyn Latrice, you'll definitely want to read this.

Cairo and Kamilla
This felt like a modern day West Side Story. My heart felt for Kamilla when she was at her lowest point, but her glow up is goals. It’s usually a robbery gone bad, but in their case it’s a robbery gone good. Definitely recommend. If Aubree wrote it I’m definitely going to read it. She always get it right

Kamilla and Cairo! I really enjoyed this story! The paths were always destined to cross one way or another. It’s filled with secrets, love, hurt betrayal and more. AP does such a great job with character development and we saw it here with but Kamilla and C4!
I loved the cameos from past characters in her universe and looking forward to Joey’s book!

Big Daddy C4
One thing I love is a C4-lovin'blow-another-nigga-up-quick MMC, and that is definitely Cairo, aka C4, aka Cai (as his lady love calls him). I wasn't disappointed at all. Something about this book feels like a continuation of the Nipsey Hustle legacy. We have C4 a hood goon, flag carrying member of the Azul Heart set, but we get introduced when he's about on the verge of making some different plans. ⚠️WARNING⚠️ The first 50% of the book takes place over two to maybe 5 weeks with C4 and Kamilla. In those few weeks, we watch Cairo, fresh off a heist and trying to break through in music as a producer, fall in love with fainting in the aisle at the first sign of violence-don't know how to cuss-ignores serious gangland red signs with the golden ear Kamilla. Kamilla, aka Milla, is fresh off grieving for her mother and other thangs. So once the pieces have been placed and the stage is set as readers we get to sink in at the sweet romantic moments while danger lurks in the background.
One thing Aubree Pynn does so well is making fear palatable. I did not live in Milla's house, but I felt unsafe. I felt scared, and my book anxiety was pumping into overdrive over the possibility of what was about to happen. I could see the snakes in the grass of the aunt and play-cousin; I appreciated the serious message their presence brought and the lessons to be learned from that type of betrayal. But that's when I fell into oooo over C4. He was going to make sure Milla was good, no matter how much he bullied his way into being her friend and then her boyfriend.
For me, this read flowed effortlessly, but for me it contained some of my least favorite tropes:
💮18 fresh-faced FMCs
💮 separations
💮secret baby
The book is divided up into Part A and Part B, or A Side/B Side. And even though I loathe 18-year-old FMCs, I think I would have liked it if the story just played out on A Side forever with the eventual HEA. The secret-baby reason still grated on my nerves, but the time jump created such a clear demarcation in the story. Ultimately, it felt like enough but not enough. I wish so hardcore that the story started with them at 22/23 and gave us a time jump because they were talking like grown-grown-grown ass people when the 5-year-later mark came. I got it, but I didn't when you realize Milla is only 23 now. I love the author's writing, so it is what it is. B-side, you see them get their grown, rich, and accomplished people on. We get to see how their HEA unfolds, and even some pop-ups of beloved characters from other standalones.

On Azul, Just Like Summer might be my favorite read of the year. It completely exceeded my expectations, and I’m forever in awe of AP’s writing!
You can’t help but fall in love with both Kamilla and Cairo. I really loved the way their paths crossed and how their friendship slowly bloomed into something beautiful. It felt like they were always meant to be together.
I’m glad that life happened for them, even when it seemed like there was no way out and everything was falling apart. They never stopped loving each other. Through all the sacrifices, heartache, grief, and everything they had to endure, somehow it all led them back to each other and gave them the opportunity to steal the moon together🌙🥹✨

Just Like Summer is a romance about two people finding their way toward each other while carrying grief, uncertainty, and the weight of everything life has already asked them to survive. Kamilla and Cairo come from different circumstances, but both are searching for something steady in the middle of their own struggles. What develops between them is more than attraction. Their connection becomes a source of comfort, understanding, and grounding as they learn how to make room for love without losing themselves in the process.
Kamilla’s journey with grief was written so beautifully. Aubree Pynn doesn’t treat grief like something with a beginning, middle, and clean ending. It follows Kamilla. It lives in her memories, her choices, the way she moves through the world, and even in the moments when she’s trying to convince herself that she’s okay. There’s such an honest portrayal of what it means to continue living after losing someone you love deeply.
Kamilla isn’t asked to forget in order to move forward. Instead, we watch her slowly learn that grief and joy can exist in the same heart. She can miss what she lost while still allowing herself to embrace what life is placing in front of her. That part of her story felt incredibly real because grief doesn’t just disappear. You learn how to carry it differently.
And then there’s Cairo. Cairo and Kamilla’s relationship had me from the beginning because underneath everything surrounding them, there’s this tenderness between the two of them that continues to grow. Cairo may exist in a world where being dangerous is almost second nature, but with Kamilla, we get to see another side of him.
Their relationship becomes a place where both of them can be vulnerable in ways they aren’t always able to be with everyone else. He sees Kamilla beyond her grief while still respecting the parts of her that have been shaped by it. And Kamilla sees beyond Cairo’s reputation, chaos, and circumstances to the man underneath who is still trying to figure out his purpose.
What I loved most was watching their love progress and blossom throughout the years. Their relationship isn’t contained to one perfect season of their lives. They grow. They change. Life happens. They experience things that could easily change the way two people love one another, yet there’s something about Kamilla and Cairo that continues pulling them back toward each other.
Their love matures alongside them. What begins as a connection becomes familiarity, protection, friendship, devotion, and eventually something that feels deeply rooted. There’s history behind the way they love each other, and you can feel that history in the smallest moments. I love a love story that allows the characters to grow into the people they’re meant to become instead of keeping them stuck in one version of themselves.
I also loved the way the book highlighted the love of community. Kamilla and Cairo’s story isn’t built in isolation. The people around them add another layer of warmth, support, accountability, and belonging. Community is shown through the way people show up for one another, offer comfort, protect each other, celebrate each other, and help carry the weight when life becomes too heavy for one person to hold alone.
It reminded me that love isn’t only found in romantic relationships. Sometimes it looks like family, friendship, shared history, familiar faces, and the people who continue to make room for you even when you’re struggling to make room for yourself.
That sense of community also made Kamilla’s journey with grief feel even more meaningful. Grief can be deeply personal and isolating, but this book shows how healing can be supported by the people who surround you. They may not be able to take the pain away, but their presence can remind you that you don’t have to move through it completely alone.
The community in Just Like Summer becomes part of the emotional foundation of the story. It shows how connection can help people survive, grow, and find their way back to joy. Sometimes the people around you can’t fix what hurts, but they can sit with you in it. They can remind you who you are when you’ve forgotten. They can help you believe that there’s still something beautiful waiting for you on the other side of the pain.
Their story also reminded me that sometimes love doesn’t arrive once everything is healed and pretty. Sometimes it finds you while you’re still figuring out how to survive. Kamilla and Cairo don’t magically fix one another. Instead, their relationship gives them space to become, to heal, to dream again, and to recognize that maybe their lives can hold more than everything they’ve already endured.
Just Like Summer ultimately felt like a story about grief, survival, purpose, community, and a love that keeps growing through every version of two people. Kamilla and Cairo’s journey isn’t powerful because everything comes easily. It’s powerful because of everything they have to live through while continuing to choose the light they found in one another, while also being surrounded by people who remind them that they are worthy of love, support, and belonging.
Aubree Pynn gave them a love story with roots. And those are always the ones that stay with me

The Moon. You're going to catch my attention with that celestial being every time. The connection with the moon is deeper than a phrase. It starts as something distant & becomes life, love, hope, a person, a dream...a legacy.
Kamilla stole my heart from the first page. 18. No parents or parental figures. A questionable aunt. A dream of going to college and making her parents proud. She built walls of steel around herself & rightfully so. I loved that she didn't immediately cave to Cairo's charm and protectiveness. But love didn't require her to disappear. She didn't want to end up like her mother. Kamilla survived the very circumstances she feared would destroy her.
Cairo/C4. His instincts were beautiful...at first. Protection.
Love. Obsessiveness (I know how yall are
😄) This wasn't a
"Let that man love you" situation. She did. His sacrifice was self-erasure. His growth comes from realizing that destroying himself to protect Kamilla wasn't the love she was asking for. Kamilla’s release made Cairo wake up from his own destruction. His apology works because his decision was damaging, not protective.
Sacrifice was a strong theme. One person was "I'II keep showing up for you, even when you won't let me." The other said, "I'll sacrifice myself for you." Two VERY different expressions of love. I kept screaming, "Stop making decisions for someone else's feelings towards you!"
I would've loved more time within those time-jump years because that's where so much emotional weight lived. I wanted more of Kamilla building her life & her found family-Dania, Haddon, Fredo, & my Lucci. They kept her close and her secrets closer 🥹 That secret? WHEW! Frustrating MEEE 😒
Kamilla moved through life the best way she knew how even though her heart didn't move with her. I love that she didn't let it halt her future. I loved the moon they created 🥹, her
standing her ground, Cairo's apology, his "There will be smoke in the city"🔥🌆 attitude & the setup for his future.
They really did steal their moon 🌑🥹🤎

Well written, captivating, emotionally charged, and satisfying, Just Like Summer is an engaging read. I felt compassion for the FMC and the MMC as well as the secondary and tertiary characters, but also illustrates the love of found family. I found the pacing to be perfect plus it contributed greatly to the development of each character in the novel. I have no criticism of the story and I see why Aubree Pynn is such a beloved writer. The only reason why I didn't give the book 5 stars is the grammatical errors. I don't know much about the author, but I have heard a lot about her and I didn't expect this many mistakes in the publication.
Final rating: 4.25 stars
Spice rating: 3/5 stars

I genuinely enjoyed this book. I enjoyed it to the point that it sort of consumed my day. Every unimportant thing was pushed to the side because I couldn’t peel myself away from the story. Cairo was the most sweetest, tender, gentle, loving, unhinged MMC I’ve ever read. It was a great balance. Kamilla was the realest FMC i’ve ever read and I love how Pynn didn’t write her in a way that made her get mad at things just to build tension between the MCs’. Pynn wrote this book BEAUTIFULLY, in a way that flowed easily to my brain (if that makes any sense). I love how dynamic the storyline was, how much effort Pynn put into penning their lives outside of the MCs’ relationship. It wasn’t monotonous for a second and I appreciate that the most. This was a great book. I definitely plan on double-backing and rereading. I quickly added it to my favorites list.

🌶️🌶️🌶️ when I say this book was so good I mean it! The MFC, Kamilla suffered a traumatic losses and had to up root her life. Cairo had a hard childhood which made him a dangerous man. These two somehow connected and found comfort in each other. But life always throws curveballs. Kamilla is the definition of ride or die! One of the things I loved most about the book is the idea that you don’t have to be blood to be family. In this book like in real life, your blood can be the ones that hurt you the most. Their village was next level. Everyone in the book got it out the mud! Such a good complicated story. One of the best I’ve read all summer!

This is one of my favorite reads of the year. It tells a compelling story of Kamilla, a young girl mourning the loss of her parents, and C4, a talented rapper striving to survive the chaos of street life. When their worlds unexpectedly collide, a powerful bond forms—only to be shattered by tragedy, forcing everyone involved to find strength and healing.
Aubreé has a remarkable talent for taking readers on unforgettable journeys with her characters. This book exemplifies that mastery, leaving a lasting impact.

Healing, grief, love, danger, and a little Los Oceania mess. Kamilla and Cairo were two lost souls trying to find their way through grief, life, and everything Los Oceania threw at them. I loved watching their connection grow while they both figured out what it meant to truly LIVE instead of just exist.
Aubreé Pynn gave me all the feels with this one. She’s officially one of my favs because it’s something about the way she can write the HELL out of an MMC.
And Cairo? Baby… underneath all that chaos was a GOOD MAN 🤭

I LOVE AP SUMMERS
I now expect an AP book every summer. This one is just as good as the last two summers. I loved getting an update on the others as well. This one had so much depth and so much love. Had my eyes sweating for all the reasons, happy and sad. The characters were great, the supporting roles were hilarious and relatable, and the writing was amazing. AP continues to outdo herself with every new title. I, excited to see what’s next. Read this book ASAP

From Bonnie & Clyde to Redemption
This book exemplifies how circumstances don’t have to dictate your trajectory. A newbie to the hood & a young OG collided worlds after a robbery about to go wrong. Grief was the trauma bond that united them but love was the force that solidified their destinies.
Love that when Kamilla had barely anything to give, she knew her love was the balm to Cairo’s soul. Cairo knew it was kismet when he dedicated to being her protector and provider.
It’s a ride or die romance with plot twists and turns.

Spicy!!!!! Sassy!!!!!!!! Suspenseful!!!!
When you grow up in GANG territory, that's all you know! Survival of the fittest! Cairo realized that violence, murder and betrayal was a part of the game and only the fearless, the chance takers, and the not afraid to die, lived to see another day! And if you're really lucky, in the middle of the madness, you just might find your ride or die Queen who has the MAGIC EAR that can transport you to a bigger and more successful life.

This was a cute story. I loved that Cairo was not only crazy but also crazy about Kamilla from the moment he laid eyes on her, and she truly needed someone in her corner. And even though this book turned into my least favourite trope, I was still locked in because AP's storytelling is just like that.

always the one… rarely the two
You know who consistently tells a good mother freaking story? Aubralina J Pynn. I am proud of who Kamilla become and love the way AP writes FMCs to build whole entire worlds for/with their men, while always being worshipped by their men.
