I signed up for an ARC of The Masked Princess by Melody Crane without knowing much except that it's a no-spice fantasy book about a princess. It was a little darker than I expected, with a plot revolving around a princess cursed to kill anyone she touches. The charming romance made up for the darker elements with a sweet courtship between childhood friends. The book was a bit longer than I would have preferred, but the writing was solid, with a detailed setting revolving around royal politics and rival kingdoms.
Princess Annalise is a kind soul with deadly powers. Anyone who makes skin-to-skin contact with her will die a gruesome death. She wears gloves at all times and tries to keep her distance from the people around her. To make matters worse, she is forced to cover her face with a mask due to a false claim that she caused a miscarriage by coughing too close to someone. The mask serves as a constant reminder of her curse, making her ashamed to show her face in public. This may have been a subtle social commentary on the regulations from a few years agoc, but there is no solid evidence in the book to confirm that.
The biggest strength of this book is the romance between Annalise and her childhood friend, Soren, who is sent to protect her when she travels to a rival kingdom to form an alliance with the enemy king. From the start, it's clear that King Nelan is a bad person and that Soren is a much better match for her, yet she has no choice but to follow through with the alliance for the sake of her kingdom. She also has strong bonds with her maids, Priscilla from her father's kingdom, and Elsabeth from her mother's kingdom. I appreciate when romance books give heroines strong female friendships in addition to love interests.
Although this book has no spice, the violence gets pretty intense at times due to the nature of Annalise's curse. I skimmed over the few scenes where she had to enact it for self-defense because the details were somewhat gruesome. I liked the strong contrast between her personality and her abilities. Many modern princesses would enjoy having such a curse to use against their enemies, but Annalise is a pacifist. Being forced to wear the mask amplifies her self-esteem issues that she must overcome.
Overall, The Masked Princess by Melody Crane is dark, no-spice romantasy with a sweet love story and a gentle heroine. The book combines political intrigue, social commentary, and fairytale romance strong enough to overcome a fatal curse. I recommend this book to people who prefer stories that have more violence and less spice. It was a bit long for me, but the worldbuilding around the kingdoms was strong and made the setting feel organic.

I thought I was reading about a princess who needed her curse broken.
Instead, I was reading about a princess who needed to understand what her mother’s magic had actually given her.
And I really loved that.
Annalise has spent most of her life believing that she is dangerous. She covers her face and body, keeps her distance from others, and has learned to live with the possibility that simply touching another person could have devastating consequences.
Yet despite the way she’s been treated, she genuinely cares about her people. Again and again, she’s willing to put what she believes is best for her kingdom ahead of what she wants for herself.
Then there’s Soren.
What I loved most about their romance is that Soren doesn’t suddenly fall in love with Annalise when he returns home after ten years away. He already loved her.
He thought about her while he was gone. He wrote letters even when she couldn’t easily write back. And while he was away, Annalise kept those letters, read them, and cherished them.
So when they’re finally together again, there’s already history beneath everything happening between them. Their relationship has this sweetness and longing to it that really worked for me.
More importantly, Soren isn’t waiting for Annalise to become “safe” before deciding she’s worthy of being loved.
He just loves her.
I thought the pacing was really good. There’s political tension, danger, family history, hidden pieces of Annalise’s past, and a much larger magical world than I initially expected.
I especially enjoyed watching Annalise learn more about her mother and where she came from. Some of the most touching parts of the story weren’t romantic at all. They were about Annalise experiencing acceptance, family, and genuine affection in ways she hasn’t always been allowed to have.
And then there’s the magic.
Without spoiling how everything works, I spent much of the book trying to figure out exactly what Annalise’s curse meant and how a romance involving a woman whose touch can kill could possibly end happily.
I had theories.
The book did something better.
I really appreciated that the answer wasn’t simply “true love fixes her.” The eventual understanding of Annalise’s magic adds another layer to her entire story and reframes something she has spent years believing about herself.
She doesn’t need someone to come along and make her whole.
She needs to understand that she was never quite what everyone told her she was.
That made the ending incredibly satisfying for me.
The Masked Princess feels like a grown-up fairytale: a masked princess, a devoted knight, kingdoms and political alliances, dangerous magic, family secrets, adventure, and a love that has survived years apart.
Soren loved Annalise in the beginning.
He loved her in the end.
And everything she discovers between those two points made this a really good story.

Thank you so much Melody Crane for letting me be an ARC reader for The Masked Princess. I have rated it 5 stars because I really loved the fairytale style of the book. It is beautifully romantic, spice free, which feels appropriate to the style of the story, and is a tale of friendship, love, found family and loyalty, with plenty of action in between. It is a stand alone and wrapped up perfectly at the end. I particularly enjoyed the green flag MMC Soren and his love for Annalise, the way he treats her when they are first reunited after her curse was so heart warming. She had been treated so coldly by everyone for years and he makes her feel special again, which was a beautiful moment. I also really enjoyed Annalise’s relationship with her Aunt. If you are looking for a traditional fairytale style story, this is the book for you!

This book felt like all the fairy tales and princess stories combined in one sparkly fantasy package. From Rapunzel to Sleeping beauty, this story has it all. Who doesn't love a stroll through a good fairytale now and then?
SUMMARY: Annalise is the crown princess for the kingdom of Dovea. But she is also cursed, cursed by her mother as a young child so no one may touch her without suffering a painful death. When a rival kingdom calls in an old betrothal, calling for Annalise's hand in marriage, she knows what she must do. With a strong back and loyalty to her kingdom burning in her veins, she is not prepared for the journey she will undertake and the secrets that will be revealed. And neither will you be.
WHAT I LIKED:
This book was a very easy read and enjoyable like a warm hug on a cold day. The story was well thought out and the characters were just the right blend of courageous and expressive. For me, what made this book so enjoyable was the ease with which the story flowed. There is no unnecessary prose or events that made no sense - it all connects into one. I enjoyed the way that Annalise develops and the way that despite being hidden for most of her life, she still garners the love and respect of the kingdom (rightly so.) This book is it's own cheerleader.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
The climax at the end of the story (not the book) with the villain felt a little underwhelming - but just to be clear - it was entirely appropriate for the story and was very logical. But it felt like it could have been a little bit more eventful. Perhaps that is just an overly critical thought.
ROMANCE:
There are no explicit scenes and the only romance comes in the form of a few chaste kisses and a lot of yearning/expressions of love and adoration.
CHARACTERS:
Annalise is just lovely. Her whole attitude and demeanour is like Snow White - sweet and caring. The development we see of her throughout this book is lovely. Showing that people's affections are built on actions and not words.
Soren is a loveable rogue. The childhood friend who went and made something of himself he portrays that playful charm and...well goofiness but without the goofy if that makes any sense. He is a lovesick puppy but her biggest champion.
VILLAIN:
The villain was very reminiscent of Scar from The Lion King and like most villains, gets their comeuppance in a mostly satisfactory way that fits with their character well. (see above for general comment.)
SUITABLE FOR:
YA and upwards, suitable for fans of adventure stories, fantasy elements and events, magic and curses. Also suitable for fans of Disney movies and other similar fantastical movies.

The Masked Princess took a minute for me to get into. For a while, I wasn’t entirely sure how Annalise’s curse worked or exactly why she had been cursed, just that she had been cursed and it wasn’t good. Then, as the pieces started falling into place, that early uncertainty paid off and somewhere along the way, I went from wondering where the story was taking me to repeatedly telling myself, “Just put the book down and go to bed.” I couldn’t. I stayed up all night because I had to know what happened.
Annalise was so easy to root for. She’s a genuinely kind person who has spent much of her life being demonized for a curse she didn’t choose. Despite being the Crown Princess, she’s dismissed, punished and conditioned to obey. And yet, she still cares deeply about helping others. While the king is raising taxes on the poor, Annalise is quietly growing herbs in the castle garden and giving them to healers to make remedies for those in need. That small detail told me so much about her character.
Watching her slowly come into her own (and, frankly, grow a spine) was one of my favorite parts of the book.
Then there’s Captain Soren. He’s the kind of green-flag MMC who makes you spend a significant portion of the book thinking, Please, just run away with him already. Where so many people see Annalise’s curse first, Soren never confuses the curse with the woman carrying it. More than anything, I loved that these are simply two good people you want good things for.
The fairy-tale feeling is darker than I expected, with people conspiring on both sides and villains I very actively wanted to see lose. I mean like, I wanted to reach through the pages of the book to hurt them. That made Annalise’s growing circle of people who genuinely cared about her even more satisfying. So many of the people who were supposed to value her discarded her or worse, but along her journey, she creates a family of her own. The people who truly see Annalise recognize her goodness, and eventually she begins to recognize her own worth, too.
And then there’s Gryna. I’m saying absolutely nothing because I don’t want to spoil the fun; just know that I cheered.
After the slow setup, I flew through this. The curse had a satisfying payoff, the relationship felt healthy and worth rooting for, and the ending left me literally sighing with relief.
If you love dark fairy tales with happy endings, found family, friends-to-lovers, green-flag MMCs, characters you desperately want to see get what they deserve (in both directions), and watching someone finally come into her own, I think you’ll love this one.

They grew up together, spending their childhood exploring palace gardens and forging a bond that neither time nor distance could break. When Soren is sent away at sixteen to train at sea, he leaves with a boy's heart in love. Years later, he returns as a Captain with one goal and one goal only: to marry the princess he has loved his entire life.
But fate has other plans.
Since her mother's death, Annalise has lived under a devastating curse that condemns her to a life of loneliness. And when the King gives her away as part of a peace treaty, everything changes. From the very first chapter, I was completely swept away. A book with princesses and evil kings, with curses spoken in old languages and with a love so strong that goes beyond everything!
The Masked Princess is Annalise, the beautiful sole heir of Dovea, the princess that is touched by a terrible curse. She is secluded completely from being known and touched, by wearing clothes that cover her entire body, and a porcelain mask to cover her face. Why? because her touch, her blood, and even her spit can kill in a matter of seconds. She is beautiful, kind, sweet natured, brilliant and cultivated but deadly just by being alive.
Her best childhood friend, Soren,is the love of her life since forever. He was sent by his father at sea, to learn how to fight and how to become a skilled sailor and warrior,and, when he comes home as a ship Capitain, he is sent by the king to guard Annalise on her way to getting married.
They love each other deeply, from distance, kept apart by the curse and by the cruel fate that made the princess marry the neighboring country's king.
The story carries us through a lot of adventures: a terrible kidnapping, a lot of death and traumatic events, two evil kings that have 0 scruples and even some hidden magic, from a hidden land. The friends to lovers theme is soft and is interwoven through out of this fairytale, because,in essence, this is what The Masked Princess is: a beautiful fairytale!

This had a strong finish. The characters were cute (except the villains of course) and I enjoyed the reveals at the end.
Plot: Princess Annaleise was accidentally cursed as her mother was dying: anyone who touches her dies. Soren, her once-childhood friend and newly returned to court as a sea captain, has always loved her in secret. There was a lot of bittersweet about this story: Annaleise who wasnt supposed to be cursed, shunned by her father's court and basically treated like a leper. I definitely felt for her as she tried to do her duty while being treated like dirt. And Soren who had always loved her but had to take her to marry another man.
I felt like somewhere in the middle this story kind of stagnated. The characters didnt really progress. Their relationships didnt really progress. The plot did, but not in a very interesting way. I found myself a little bored.
But I'm glad I continued because the last 80 or so pages were enjoyable! There were feelings and plot and reveals and happy endings. Sure, i could see most of them coming from a mile away, but they were still enjoyable to experience. Especially since the MCs deserved some happiness.

This had a strong finish. The characters were cute (except the villains of course) and I enjoyed the reveals at the end.
Plot: Princess Annaleise was accidentally cursed as her mother was dying: anyone who touches her dies. Soren, her once-childhood friend and newly returned to court as a sea captain, has always loved her in secret. To start my review, I wanna start by saying I am very…. particular when it comes to my book rating and I don’t just give out 5 star ratings all Willy nilly (Willie Nelly?) but there wasn’t a SINGLE thing about this book that I didn’t like. IMMEDIATELY fell in love with Soren. 🥰 The stuff that he said and the banter between him Annalise was perfect! I had SO many moments of just kicking my feet and giggling. Then there were other part when I was laugh at the situation. But a good book can only be a good as its villain. And man did she do a good job with character. It definitely wasn’t an immediate “oh yeah, that character, that’s the villain.” Melody what kind of hint at it a little bit but it wasn’t a definitive that was the bad guy character.

When I tell you I fell for the MMC from the get-go, man oh man, I knew I was in for it. I came across The Masked Princess one day on social media, and was intrigued by the summary and tropes. And I mean, A PRINCESS AND A KNIGHT!!! If you know me, you know I love knights with a passion.
This book kept me hooked!!! Even though it moves at a medium pace, there is so much that happens that keeps you wanting to know more.
Annalise, the FMC, is so Eowyn coded, she’s so gentle, strong, determined, fierce, and a brave princess who has a curse on her that if anyone touches her, they are annihilated.
Soran, the MMC, is a strong, gentle, fierce, committed, dedicated Captain (and Lord…hehe) who loves Annalise since they were kids, and he yearns!!!!
Through the curse, kingdom politics, hidden magic, secrets, betrayals, loss and many twists, this fairytale-like romance keeps you intrigued from beginning to end! This is a standalone book, but I really wish it was a series because I need more of this world!

I truly loved that she remained kind and gracious despite the wrongdoings of people who were supposed to care for her, and it was so pleasing to see her build a strong community of people around her who had her best interests at heart. The MMC, Soren, is the greenest green flag ever - funny, chivalrous and totally enamoured with the FMC. The cast of side characters were equally as fascinating, each having purpose and depth to their character that helped the reader form attachments to them!
This is definitely a must-read book that I would recommend to friends & family. The romance and yearning was impeccable!

A powerful love story between two very stubborn souls and where one would sacrifice her happiness for the betterment of her people; the other is honorable to a fault. Throw in some court politics and intrigue, betrayal, emotional and physical abuse, found family, and yearning for days makes a strong story. Be prepared for some tears, but also growth for our main characters.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC from Melody Crane and I'm so happy I did. The Masked Princess is a beautiful, yet tragic tale of a princess who is cursed as a child. The story Melody weaves is so captivating it had me reading well last my bedtime. To live the way Princess Annalise lives , and the way her father treats her just broke my heart.

Annalise and Soren grow as childhood friends and life circumstances separate them for years until Soren decides to come home. He immediately gets assigned as Annalise guard and is ordered to escort her to neighboring kingdom to marry the king because of an old treaty that was signed. BUT! She has been cursed and her touch can kill people.
It had some plot holes and some things sort of developed quickly, but I think overall it was a good read and I enjoyed the story because the evil bastards got their due.

I was sent this book as an ARC and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The story had me hooked very early on and I absolutely loved Princess Annalise and Soren as characters. Having a story built around a princess that can’t touch anyone is new and refreshing and I enjoyed the tension built around what Annalise wants and what is possible for her. It was also refreshing to have a love interest that was never mean to the heroine. The story progression was well done and the tension was top tier. This book gave me a lot of joy and was a wonderful escape, I look forward to reading more from this author.

This one gets a solid 4 stars for me. The fantasy feel was done very well, and I ended up loving the overall concept of Annalises curse. Soren is a fully green flag, golden retriever mmc, and he falls first. He is also her bodyguard if you enjoy that trope. This is a no spice story, so make sure you go in with the correct expectations! The winged horses were an amazing touch, and her aunt was actuality probably my favorite character. Was I absolutely blown away by this story? No... but I did really enjoy myself and it was an easy and well laid out fantasy book!

As far as I’m concerned, this is a 5-star read—only because it’s physically impossible to give it 6; otherwise, that’s what it would get.
For me, a "perfect" book needs to tick a few specific boxes, and The Masked Princess nails every single one of them: a female lead whose strength lies in her kindness and resilience; a male lead who is a walking green flag (bonus points for chivalry); an antagonist who is detestable yet fascinating; and a satisfying ending or epilogue.
In my opinion, this book literally has EVERYTHING. Aaaaand it’s going to be my entire personality for the next few months, probably.

I loved how creative and unique the storyline in this book was. It kept me drawn in. I loved the characters in this book- they were very likable and it had me rooting for them in my head, as if they’re real. I recommend this book to anyone who likes clean romantasies. It also is clean for YA readers as well.

Really enjoyed this book, loved that it was a stand alone as well so all wrapped up at the end.
I really liked the main characters in this book, Annalise was so genuine and selfless throughout. Soren was so loving and loyal, also he had some good humour. The storyline kept me intrigued and engaged throughout, could have easily finished this in a day if life didn’t get in the way!
Overall, this was such an enjoyable easy read for me, off to read the prequel novella now!

Reviewing as an ARC reader
I was chosen as one of the ARC readers for this book and it was a good read. It was fast paced, but I think it was well paced in order to satisfyingly tie up the story in a single book. Melody Crane does a good job at making our protagonist truly detestable. And Soren was definitely the love interest I was rooting for. Also - love a good green flag MMC.
