Silent Reading: Mo Du (Novel) #4
Silent Reading: Mo Du (Novel) Vol. 4
A VANISHED KILLER REARS HIS HEAD
When several students from a prestigious private school flee campus overnight, the Yancheng Municipal Public Security Bureau launches a search—only to find one of the runaways murdered. As Sergeant Luo Wenzhou and his team investigate, they uncover a cruel ritual carried out by the students’ own peers, and powerful parents who would rather the case be forgotten.
But the ritual is only the beginning. The boy’s death is soon linked to a series of highway murders from more than a decade earlier. Following that trail, it becomes clear that all the bureau’s most recent cases contain a common thread…a thread tied to Fei Du.

I love how expertly Luo Wenzhou rebuffs every one of Fei Du’s attempts to push him away. Your dad was a sadist and as a result, you can’t love anyone??? Likely story—considering you got yourself blown up for me last book and at any given moment want to kiss me so much it makes your stupid, handsome face look even stupider. Now, come snuggle with me and my cat and stop talking nonsense.
It’s fantastic on every level.
If my partner can’t put up with me like Luo Wenzhou puts up with Fei Du, I don’t really want them.
Anyway.
This was another INTENSE volume.
They just keep getting more twisted and unsettling. Here, we got a bunch of rich kids going “Lord of the Flies” again—creating a social hierarchy and hunting each other for sport. Yada, yada. As the worst kids you know do. Add in some self-entitled rich parents who have also never faced any consequences for their bad behavior and a delulu fugitive who’s been haunting the narrative and you’ve got a very MESSY story.
Luo Wenzhou somehow has more restraint than I do—I’d have hit a lot more folk.
A kid has been brutally murdered because of some classroom squabble? Go f*ck yourselves. Idk if the kid was a d*ck, too.
In my humble opinion, this is why rich people don’t deserve any rights—they abuse any system they can immediately and all that bad behavior trickles right down to their rotten kids. Tax them. Take all their money. Maybe then they stand a chance at being decent people.
Anyway, anyway.
Good, solid volume.
Would like some more fluff, though??? Please let these grown men be baby girls~

That ending? Wild. Now I go back into cryo sleep until the next one comes out.

Another great continuation of this series. I'm so happy we got to see Luo Wenzhou and Fei Du as a loving couple living together for the whole book. The really kept dodging any conflict or miscommunication moments they could have had and I was so grateful for no relationship drama. They have bigger fish to fry. Namely this suspicious organization working in the shadows. We got much closer to cracking that larger case as we examined the case in the book. It was full of some great action sequences that are sure to keep anybody engaged as the story progresses. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book to see where things go from here.

I think this is my favorite volume so far. I love how how Fei Du tries to pull an avoidant "it's not you; it's me" rejection but Luo Wenzhou calls him out on his bullshit because he knows Fei Du loves him. In most other stories, this would result in angst for over 10 chapters but Luo Wenzhou is too old for this! I love it. I was also really invested in the mystery and I thought it was the most interesting one so far. So many nice interactions with the side characters too -- Fei Du meeting Luo Wenzhou's parents, the other police officers getting their limelight too, Tao Ran and Luo Wenzhou shenanigans, and His Feline Royal Highness ;)
I've been enjoying this series greatly but when I finished this book, I really thought "Wow, I love Silent Reading." I just really appreciate Priest's subtle, slow-burn characterization and plot heavy approach.

Oh we are so back, baby.
This case was fantastic and went into some dark corners like it did with the first two cases which I liked so much about them. I also enjoy how much it also did develop and show Fei Du and Luo Wenzhou's relationship without it being the main focus or deviating too much from the case. I also liked how much it does push forward the overarching plot while continuing to mention the previous cases.

Review of advance copy
What even was this case? They weren't lying when they said kids are the scariest people today. Of course, it is because the adults around them failed them one way or the other, whether by pampering them too much or otherwise. Still, this one really gave me chills.
Though I do want to dock at least half a star for that distasteful joke :(

(4.5☆) probably the least compelling case (to me) of the story so far on its own BUT i do really like how pieces are starting to come together in the overarching storyline & the relationship progression was very good!!!

Anyway, overall kasusnya fantastic dan segelap dua kasus awal. Progress relationship Fei Du dan Luo Wenzhou juga dapet banget tanpa ngalihin fokus dari misteri utamanya. Kerennya lagi, overarching plot-nya tetep ngegas sambil rapi ngejahit kasus-kasus lama. Solid parah!
