Caliban
After the death of his wife, Dr. Bobby Reed gave up his life as a geneticist and settled down to raise his kids. He thought he had destroyed everything related to his research until an old rival calls for help. Bobby races against the clock as both the virus and Alpha Corp bear down on Walker's Pass and his children. Have you read Andromeda Strain? Caliban is MUCH better! Nading's writing is excellent and her characters are well-developed, leaving me loving the good guys and hating the bad guys. Caliban is a well-plotted thriller about a genetics lab gone wrong that threatens the existence of a small town. A little bit of romance and plenty of tension kept me turning the pages. The ending was left open for a sequel and I hope it comes soon! ...along with the movie!

A great thriller. Miranda Nading did a masterful job of crafting the plot of "Caliban" in such a way as to reveal bits and pieces of the past and what was happening and, in my opinion, make the entire story more suspenseful. The main characters are well-developed and realistic.

Bad men plus science equals monsters!
I don't begin to say I understand anything about gene exploration. But, I do understand that there are a lot of evil men in this world who think they know everything and are willing to try anything for power and money. This book describes that quite well. I was drawn into the storyline quickly and loved the characters. Imagine your grandma turning into a monster who wants to kill you and everyone else! That is only the beginning. What happens in this small town will make you wonder what is really going on in this world. It will also scare you!

The setting is in the Windriver mountains of Wyoming in a small town where Dr. Reed and his son and daughter live. When Dr. Reed (Bobby) gets a call in the early morning from an old acquaintance with whom he has an unpleasant relationship, but works for the same company as Bobby. He is "requested" to report to an exclusive cancer research and nursing facility up in the mountains. Reluctantly Bobby agrees to go and trusting his kids to their favorite grandma he heads out into the teeth of a pending storm. What he finds at the center will change his life and the lives of the whole town. It seems that his acquaintance has "acquired" notes on some of Bobby's early research and under the blanket of the center and in secret research has managed to unleash a virulent and deadly virus with unexpected results. Thoroughly well-developed characters and great descriptive writing. I found myself drawn especially to the teenage characters. Can't wait to read more by this marvelous writer!

Exciting book, but does make you think. Characters are excellent. It is so strange how you can not like one of the characters just from, reading the book.

Very good read. I really liked this fast paced story.
The premise is an oldie but goodie: an evil corporation inadvertently spreads a deadly virus to a small town, turning infected people into monsters, then try to sweep their mistake under the rug by killing everyone.
We have a great set of characters, and a twist and turn plot that makes you want to keep reading even when you know you should go to bed.
This is my type of story, and I will totally read the sequel, if only to know what will happen to Shawn and the rest of the characters.
My only complaint is that the author obviously fell in love with her characters and spared the lives of almost all of them, when realistically, some should be dead. And the one that died didn't get a proper grieving at the end. This is the reason why I didn't give the book 5 stars.
In all, great read, and an author I'll read again in the future.

What a great story! Caliban is a story of deception and murder on a colossal scale. Secrets unfold with each page and you are drawn in to an improbable family affair of sorts. The author writes with authority and either knows the technical aspects of the genetic story or has done some good research. The characters are developed in an engaging way although a little too black and white much of the time.
The only thing that detracted from what became a ripping yarn was the slow start where too much detail was used to set the scenes and the characters. I was forced to skip over paragraphs, reading only a few words, just to keep myself interested in the storyline. That slow progress changed about a third of the way through where the action started and the descriptive passages became fewer and shorter providing a much better reading experience.
In all, very well done, but could be made better with some front end editing.

This story is not your average story about shifters, or those infected with animal blood. When the Bobby Reed is called to a retirement research center only to find that the experiments the Alpha Corp had been doing were not only dangerous, but were killing the very people they were trying to save from cancer.
The dangerous experiments escape only to infect the surrounding town, but they only way to stop the infection is take out the entire town. Bobby is concerned that his children will be in danger, but is unable to leave because he must find a way to undo this terrible problem.
A truly amazing story that makes the reader want more of these very interesting people and what this infection can truly do.

Spooky and thought-provoking!
This book kept me glued from start to finish! When I think about what scientists are doing with genetics I generally tend to think in the abstract, much like the H in the book. Possibilities. And lots of testing. Lots of years of testing. But what if you get individuals who don't think like that? The characters in this book are just your average person, your neighbor. They came together and became something extraordinary. I REALLY hope there is a sequel to this book. Not only to find out what happens, but to follow up on the characters. This is a MUST read!!!
