Jean-Luc’s hotel has been blown up, his friend is dead and he is under investigation by Paradise Lot’s police chief, the archangel Michael. And his day hasn’t even started yet...
Hellelujah!..
The gods are gone. All of them.
Their last message to humanity was: "Thank you for believing in us, but it is not enough. We're leaving. Good luck." At first no one took them seriously. Until, that is, all the denizens of all the heavens and hells started showing up on people's doorsteps.
Creatures that were once thought of as myth are now refugees striving to adapt to life on earth. Trouble is, after eons of living forever, they're not very good at being mortal.
Caught in the middle is Jean-Luc, a struggling hotelier who (reluctantly) promised to help these 'Others' live in this new GoneGod world. But taking care of his guests, keeping his hotel afloat and dealing with the constant drama of the Others' lives is figuratively killing him. And now that an unusually strange Other is in town, his figurative demise might soon become more literal.
Ramy Vance lives in Edinburgh with his wife, recently born child and imaginary dog where he enjoys a beautiful city, whisky (Scottish spelling, not mine) and long walks. All he really wants is to quit his job and write stories based in Paradise Lot. All he really hopes for is that his child is healthy (ten fingers, ten toes and at least two eyes is a good start) and that eventually he can can get a real dog so that he can have an excuse to go on even more long walks.
This episode starts with some of the protagonist Jean-Luc's fondly recalled memories of his wife. They were teens who fell in love and married young. But we know from the first book - and are quickly told in this one - that Bella has died since the coming of chaos. The gods departed and all the hidden supernatural beings came out into the bright of day.
In this portion of the book we get more emphasis on the constraints now placed on these Others. A being which was immortal, like an angel or a were, now has a usual earth human lifespan. They still retain some powers but if they use them, the energy required reduces their lifespan, like using up the fuel. This is a good way to explain why nations are not dominated by gorgons and vampires (or perhaps some are, since we don't hear about anything but the immediate aftermath of change).
I was interested by the personification of a law of physics. I might have taken a different approach, that it was a god created and worshipped by scientists, albeit unknowingly.
The death and destruction begun in the first book continues and Jean-Luc is required to spend some time assisting police. He ends up in a perilous situation, which annoys me. The episodes are not that long and can be made shorter if you're like me and skip over the gory bits. It's possible to read part two first and still follow it, especially if you have read the Suki Stackhouse or similar series. I recommend the tale for adults who enjoy dark urban fantasy and don't mind cliffhangers.
This is an unbiased review. I have also reviewed part one as the author made two parts free to download.
The story picks right up where episode 1 left off. Jean-Luc, Penemue, Astarte deal with the aftermath of Joseph's death and the explosion. Caca makes an appearance during a recon mission to find the Announcer. Judith is still with the group, too. The story moves quickly without feeling rushed. As more information is revealed you feel some of your loyalties shifting from okay this character is alright to wishing for revenge of some sort and everything in between. The humor, banter, and interactions among the characters keeps you hooked. Of course, cliffhangers at the end and having to wait for the next episode helps, too.
This story just keeps drawing you in deeper and deeper. It so engaging and full of action that you can't put it down. Can't wait to get into part three.
ANOTHER GREAT EPISODE IN WHAT IS SHAPING UP TO BE AN AWESOME SERIES!
This is the sequel to the first Paradise Lot: the GoneGod World, and in the second part we have more heavenly/earthly mayhem: the characters in the GodGone World are still struggling to overcome their situation on earth as they learn to cope living in a world with each other. Each chapter moves readers at a fast pace through the story with the characters. My favourites are: Medusa the Gorgon, Jean-Luc Matthias the human, and Grinner, a bad ass that causes mayhem and destruction.
Chapter 1: Unleash the Dogs of War The hotel has been destroyed and hell is unleashed as Grinner faces off against Jean-Luc and two Others that ends in an epic battle!
Chapter 2: Spiteful Angels The hotel is destroyed and Jean has a dream of Bella as Medusa saves him from certain death brought on by Grinner; Michael [an Angel of the highest oder] interrogates Jean-Luc Matthias. The Unicorn also dies which is a tragic loss for our GoneGod heroes.
Chapter 3: Even Angels have wicked schemes The story moves closer as the survivors try to figure out what has happened and the involvement of the angels and they have to accept the fact that they are mortal. Also we find out that Grinner is Gravity’s Avatar, an all powerful force that threatens to destroy everything and everyone. And they try to find out that the “box” really is, why it is so important and the significant role it pay in the GodGone World.
Chapter 4: The Question In An Answer In this chapter our hero jean-lux is picking up the pieces after the destruction of the hotel, the death of the Unicorn, Bella and Joseph.
Chapter 5: Everything leaves Behind a Scent Begins with our hero telling his tale about joining Special Forces after bella died, and the hunting sword he still has in his possession. Jean sets out to hunt down the angels responsible for killing Joseph and destroying the hotel. The tension build sas you can feel the action coming on!
Chapter 6: The light at the end of the tunnel of shit Now we have Jean heading out through the sewers in search of some bad-ass revenge. Jean-Lux hooks up with Hermes and gains more insight and knowledge on the GoneGod world, and what happens when the Gods left.
Chapter 7: Betrayal Can be Sweet Grinner is back and launches an attack against jean-lux and Hermes.
The Real Deal with GodGone World Book 2: The story moves with quickening speed because of the wicked interactions and relationships of the characters; This doesn’t just expand on the 1st book, but elevates the story to a new precedent. Readers are taken into a world that challenges the imagination and stimulates sympathy for those that trapped in a place not of their making, and desperately want to find there answers to what has happened and, more importantly, how can they get out and make the world right again.
This series is shaping up to deliver a power-punch that you definitely want to stay in tune with. The writer RE Vance has also written this sequel in a more passionate tone which indicates that the characters are beginning to develop genuine personalities that emerge without the writer’s control. The characters are developing into real personas that you start to care about. And, you can’t wait to flip that next page to see what they decide to do next!
With just part II released, the series is already gaining strong ground and is digging in to deliver a whopping story guaranteed to entertain, frighten and capture readers’ attention.
Another exciting and interesting installment. Short, but with plenty of action. Very much enjoyed it, looking forward to finding out what happens next...
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this series, some nice twists, good character development. Can't wait to read the next!! I love Penemue, he is the best & worst of all of us. Wishing he could do more but unable to because of his past that keeps him down. How many of us go through that daily!! I love the characters & the way the author keeps the characters true to what most of us accept as "Fact" concerning the Gods, Heaven, Hell & everything in between
Another great read. But I have to say........Beware! The ending will leave you wanting, and waiting. I'm still very excited and anxious for the next episode.
I bought this book with all 4 parts in the same book. As with other GoneGod World books I have read, Ramy Vance keeps me spellbound from the first page to the last, keeping me always hungering for more.
This story doesn't disappoint as it is intriguing, fast paced, totally fascinating and the characters are humorous and lovable.
Part two of a serial, so you need to have read part one. It isn't a full story. I am thinking of it like a comic book series without pictures. (It comes out monthly and each part costs about the same as a comic. You can get part two free if you buy either part one or three though.)
Jean-Luc is the human owner of the Other hotel. The kindly Other known as Joseph has been killed and a large portion of the hotel is destroyed. The Other that is responsible turns out to be massively powerful and seems to have set his target on Jean-Luc.
I was really surprised by this installment. After the first one being basically an introduction of characters, I figured this would be a gentle introduction of the plot. But it was a gentle wading into it, it was a full headlong dive into the deep end. In fact, now I am wondering how the author plans to keep the story going for the thirty installments that he said he has planned. It will definitely be a roller coaster ride.
