About the author

Mike Bossy

1 book
Michael Dean Bossy or, according to some sources, Michael Jean Bossy is a Canadian former ice hockey player who played for the New York Islanders for his entire career and was a crucial part of their four-year reign as Stanley Cup champions in the early 1980s. Among many other remarkable achievements, he was the only player in NHL history to score consecutive Stanley Cup winning goals (1982 and 1983) and the only player to record four game-winning goals in one series (1983 Conference Final). He is the NHL's all-time leader in average goals scored per regular season game, holds the NHL's third highest all-time average points scored per regular season game, and is one of only five players to score 50 goals in 50 games. On January 27, 2017, in a ceremony during the All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles, Bossy became part of the second group of players to be named one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in history.

I guess I am a little bit biased here. I love the New York Islanders. One of my favourite players growing up was Mike Bossy. There. That's out of the way.

I first read this book almost 30 years ago! Crazy! But, it's been awhile...I don't remember much. It's essentially a breakdown of his career, year by year. There's some early childhood stuff and junior hockey stories, but 90% of the book boils down to his years with New York and his friendship with Bryan Trottier. What more do you want? :-)

He comes across as VERY honest! I certainly got the feeling he wasn't holding much back. From his stance on fighting (which was pretty well known), to his reluctance to play in the '84 Canada Cup, to his hope of playing in the '88 Olympics...whether he was with the Islanders or not! I felt like I got the complete story. At least at that point in his life.

He wrote the book shortly after the 87-88 season that he did not play in. Would have been interesting to see how his perspective would have changed if he had waited 10 years, then written the book. Things and feelings change as you get older. Maybe Boss has another book in him yet? I hope so.
