Title: Live Love Lead
Author: Brian Houston
Genre: Christian, biography, advice
Overall Rating: 4 stars

I haven't read a christian book before in my whole life, other than the bible and it's safe to say that I was pleasantly surprised. I liked how he made it personal to his life and to his walk and shared some of the high points of being the senior pastor at Hillsong and some of the low points. He gives a lot of really great advice throughout this book as well.

I read this book in a day, but I really recommend taking your time to go through it. I feel like I probably should've done that and maybe one day I will.

It was a great read.

honestly- despite attending hillsong church, this book was hard to read. i got both audio and e-book and was struck by how horrible it all was.
parts where ok. other where just about how they are making a movie...that came up so often it started smelling like advertisment. other stories where misrepresented. riddled with mistakes. but still ok in some parts. audio version is truely horrible. his voice is unbearable. I would probably never recommend this book to anyone.

Loved this book so much that I bought 20 copies to give away to people God put in my heart. Ps Brian shares his life experiences, leadership and give valuable advice. Once I started reading, it was hard to put the book down. I'll read a second time at a slower pace. Thank you for taking time to write.

A fantastic book that I can highly recommend. Pastor Brian from Hillsong church shares a lot of amazing insights that he learned from leading g hillsong all these years. He is being real and honest and some of his stories really shocked me and taught me a lot. It's written in a simple and not academic way.
Read it if you are looking for a book that will challenge you and cause you to grow a bit :-)

I recommend this to everyone who is in a position of leadership or aspires to become a leader in the future.
This is full of amazing gold nuggets and I had to stop reading several times because I was so overwhelmed by some of the deep revelations in this book.
I was absolutely floored by the sincerety and honesty of Ps. Brian Houston about the struggles he had to go through and I seriously believe, we should honour our leaders more as they carry burdens that we often have no clue about.

On another note: the fact that I read a big portion of this on the gorgeous beaches of Sydney and Melbourne, was probably another big factor why reading this book was such a great and encouraging experience. :)

Pastor Brian Houston shares a lot of anecdotes intertwined with, what I would describe as, one ministry per chapter. Every chapter has a category. Both entertaining and food for the soul.

I have a problem with books about Christianity, by Christians. Perhaps it's because I'm a new Christian who isn't comfortable with her faith. The Christian books that I have read have came across as unrealistically optimistic and overly preachy. Which is kind of the point, but still annoys me. One of my favorite teachers recommended "Live Love Lead" to me, which gave me hope that I would enjoy it. I loathed it-it is easily the worst book by a Christian, for Christians that I have ever read.

Brian Houston is obnoxious, vexing, irksome, pestiferous, whatever. He's annoying. Each chapter had a new personal story, followed by a new life lesson that he obviously connected to the Bible/God. After about 3-4 chapters of this it got monotonous. Story, lame jokes about the situation, Bible. Move on, time for the next chapter. Houston held such an optimistic, peppy tone throughout the book that it became ingenuine. No one should sound so joyful when talking about how their father molested someone.

Those who are fans of Hillsong Church's worship music will want to read this because it was written by Hillsong's founder. The personal stories about the founding of Hillsong and how Houston manages it might be interesting, but "Live Love Lead" should not be read for leadership and life advice. Each piece of advice in this book can be found from any decent life coach.

So this isn't a good book. And while its not really a bad one either, I expected more.

Brian Houston is the founder of Hillsong Church, the global mega church best known for its worship music. I think what he attempted to do in this book was provide a sort of leadership manual for aspiring church leaders. Sadly, what came out was a convoluted collection of thoughts that was hard to follow.

Sure, there are some good points here and there. And undoubtedly Houston has a lot to bring to the leadership conversation. I just felt that a lot of the book was hackneyed platitudes that you'd probably hear from any other run of the mill leadership coach.

You can do without reading this.

I read a few of the reviews before reading this book and I'm not sure it did me any good.
I expected this book to be directed towards those that want to lead in ministry. The more I read, the more I learned it was about Leading the life God wants you to live. That despite all of the trials in life, God wants you to have live the best.
I thought it was pretty cool learning the background of Hillsong, since their worship songs lead close to my heart.
This was a good book overall, yet, there were definitely flaws. But he's a human writing a story about his life in the church.
I liked a lot of the quotes, and I think there's a lot that people going through hard times in life should hear.

This book gives great insight into the history of Hillsong Church and the people who helped shape the modern day Hillsong Church as we know it.

Ps. Brian Houston dives deep into his past experiences and opens the door into his personal life and relationship with Bobby and his parents.

Jaw-dropping and beautifully written.

The author, Brian Houston, talks about how he lived before the Hillsong church was made. Brian also tells the story of why he felt a calling to build a church. I would recommend this book to people that think life stories are cool and that really desire to have a good relationship with god. I thought this book was really interesting because I've learned a lot about how and why Hillsong church was created.

I love Brian Houston's heart and the honesty with which he shares his story. People often look at highly successful leaders and think that their life is been a bed of roses. However, dynamic leaders such as Brian have known pain and sorrow, and have allowed God to work all things together for his glory. I loved this book and would recommend it to leaders and anyone aspiring to experience more!

I originally picked this book up at an op shop soon after Houston resigned from Hillsong. I now understand why it was at the op shop to begin with. Once you have read the first chapter, you've read them all. His writing is jagged and you end up applauding the man when he links the bible with his experiences. Throughout the book Houston doubles down on the 'white christian' narrative, especially in the regards of the repeated 'othering' of the continent of Africa. While other countries are individually named, Houston perpetuates the idea of Africa being an impoverished, disease ridden continent needing 'to be saved'. In the first part of the book, Houston encourages christians to respect other faiths, yet throughout the book when mentioning someone who he deems 'bad' or 'sinful' he is quick to point out details that allude to them not being a christian.
For a book trying to link personal experiences to the bible, he doesn't do a great job. Most of his personal tidbits are then linked to bible. verses, backing up thoughts and feelings. However, he LOVES to pick and chose the translation of these verses to fit his narrative (even going as far to use The Message translation multiple times). While using multiple translation isn't inherently wrong, the picking and choosing from 6 different translations is excessive.
Throughout my reading, I decided to cross reference each verse using the KJV just for a base understanding. During this cross referencing I noticed an error in his verse quoting. On page 227 he tries to quote Hebrews 6:22 (this verse does not exist). Instead this should be Hebrews 11:33. While it is a bit nitpicky, I still think this is a pretty big blunder.
If you want to learn more about the Hillsong founder, this book is not it. If you want to learn more about the language, politics and ethics of Brian Houston, this book is great. While I do not have any experience with Hillsong Church, I hope they do not reflect his ignorance and questionable language.

P.S. This book supports the idea of 'sacrificing your sexuality for God'. While Houston is no longer affiliated with Hillsong, he was at the time of writing this book.

Excellent book! I recommend.

"One day in November, my son and his wife invited us for lunch at a restaurant and gave us some good news: we would be grandparents! We were happy, we shared testimonies and in the end someone paid our bill. How I wanted to know who it was!

Twelve months later, in the same place, I was running by when someone with a child stopped me: can I tell you a story?

He told me that for years he tried to have a child with his wife, but to no avail. He sought God and one day he had the promise that he would have a child at the end of the year. That day at the restaurant he heard about my daughter-in-law's pregnancy and was filled with envy: why not them and me !? And he found himself in a dilemma: whether to surrender his envy or trust what God promised him.

He made his decision and paid our bill anonymously, grateful for the opportunity for growth. Today he has his son on his lap. "

What an attitude!

Matthew: 15. 26. But he said, It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the puppies. 27. To which she said: Yes, Lord, but even the puppies eat from the crumbs that fall from their owners' table. 28. Then Jesus answered and said to her, O woman, great is your faith! be done as you wish. And since that hour your daughter has been healthy.

Brian Houston is a powerhouse. His message is so strong. Encouraging the reader to take the narrow gate , that is Jesus and by dong so embrace a wide-expansive life and future. We are all called to engage with Christ and God no matter where we are in our lives. Houston talks of embracing 'all things' within our lives because God asks us to. Houston is the global pastor of Hillsong church and much of what he relates to us to is based around his experiences being a part of this church.I love how he focuses on worship through music and every chapter has a quotes from one of Hillsong's songs . His message again and again is that Christ has so much in store for you in your future you just need to embrace it. Houston, tells us everyone has unique gifts . Whether small or great those gifts are what can give meaning to your life. He doesn't focus overly on himself which is refreshing. Just enough to personalise the message. He ends the book with the following message - 'Live, love, and lead like Jesus and your life on earth and in Heaven will reflect the ongoing glory of God - in all things. There is no doubt - your best is yet to come' . A powerful shout out to everyone hoping to call more people to be believers in Christ and our Father.

DNF: I read about two thirds of this book before I had to stop. Houston couches this book as a guide to leadership. In reality, this book is one giant anecdote about how successful Hillsong is.

In regards to the Spiritual encouragement I expected to see from Houston, this book feel short. He had some good one liners about trusting God through difficulties and about having faith in Christ alone for salvation. However, most of his Spiritual advice can be summed up with “trust God and He will make you successful and help you fulfill your dreams.”

This line of thinking distorts the Gospel to make it less about God and more about what we want while we are here on the earth. This way of thinking is ultimately what moved me to stop reading.

As a follower of Christ, our lives are meant to be lived as a sacrifice of ourselves so that the unveiling world may know His love and worship Him. It is clear from Jesus’ teachings that our lives are not supposed to be focused on any sort of success or fulfillment of our dreams. (Luke 9:23-27)

I love the encouragement and life that Hillsong has brought to the way people praise, and I know that Houston meant well by the book. Still, I would not recommend this book to anyone looking for advice on how to lead/shepherd anyone Spiritually.

"The church is not called to be an enforcer of rules, but an outpouring of grace."

How to live in this grace and live and love as Jesus did is the central theme of Brian Houston's book.

God has called and chosen each one of us with a specific calling and destiny. He has given each of us unique gifts and talents. We can chose to embrace them and fully live, or, sit back and watch life pass us by.

With examples from his own life and ministry, Houston shows what a life of faith and calling looks like. Using examples of success and failure, through good times and lean times, Houston walks out the life of unique calling that God has placed on his life. His message is upbeat and positive, simple but profound. We are all called. Life isn't always easy, but the God that calls us will keep us and empower us to live fully.

We may not be called to lead a global church as Houston does, but we are called to make an impact on the world around us with the gifts that God has given us. We are called to live and love fully, as Jesus did, knowing the best is yet to come.

This book is a game changer from beggining to end. Pastor Brian knows how to nail the history chapter to chapter. Couldn't leave my Kindle since I started reading the book. Amazing is a word that falls short to everything that has and is happening at Hillsong. Lots of tips, lots of things to learn and to put to the practice. I had the chance to personally hear 2 of Hillsong preachers, Chris Mendez and Phill Dooley (Hillsong Argentina & Hillsong Southafrica) at México, the Hillsong DNA is truly inspiring. I recommend this book to anybody that is seeking his/her purpose on life, wether if you have a clue of what it is or if you are clueless, this book will definitely open your eyes, senses and heart to the glorious future God has for each of us. Happy reading!

This book is kind of like Pastor Brian's teaching, full of stories and easy wisdom. He is like the spiritual dad you would want to laugh with or bring your friends home too. The chapters are easy to flow into. However, I do wish Pastor Brian would stop using the phrase 'You See" before beginning to explain something, because its an overused easy writing tool.
I did find the book lacked any real hook and could put it down for days before picking it back up again. That can be a positive thing when wanting a book you can pick up and read at any moment or it can also mean it lacks a hook to reel you in.
