Featuring a preview of the highly anticipated new thriller Speaking in Bones, this eBook original novella showcases #1 New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs at the peak of her powers. In Bones on Ice, forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan gets wrapped up in the ultimate cold a death on Mount Everest.

It is called the “death zone”: the point on Everest, nearly five miles high, above which a climber cannot be rescued. More than 250 souls have lost their lives there. Most of the bodies remain, abandoned, frozen in place. When an earthquake leads to a miraculous recovery, Dr. Temperance Brennan is hired to identify the frozen mummified human corpse. The victim is the daughter of a wealthy Charlotte couple who never got the chance to say goodbye. But far from offering solace and closure, Tempe’s findings only provoke more questions. What happened on Mount Everest? Was the young woman’s death an accident? Why aren’t the other climbers talking? And how far will those hiding the truth go to make sure the past stays buried?

This was not too bad...but I am getting a bit tired of the novellas that authors put out between their books....
So, we have Temperance Brennan discovering that a woman who had been thought died whilst climb Mt Everest was actually murdered!!

I liked the way the investigation is done even though I felt at times it was pretty rushed......and let me just add....that I had an idea of what actually happened to the victim.

Hell, when are you going to see Ryan again??? Tempe must get a life away from all those bones!!!!!!

When forensic anthropologist Dr Temperance Brennan was called in by her boss to examine and identify a body retrieved from the “death zone” on Mount Everest, she had no idea the simple task would turn into a complicated and complex one. A recent earthquake and avalanche had sent bodies tumbling down and into an area which was safe for retrieval. The area called the “death zone” at the top of Mount Everest meant any unfortunate persons who passed away had to be left there as the danger was immense. Many bodies remained at the summit, frozen where they fell…

As Tempe’s investigation deepened, the anomalies she discovered sent shivers down her spine. She talked with the fellow climbers of the victim and found them to be reticent and hostile. Were they hiding something? The body and the bones were shedding their secrets – what would Tempe find? The truth? Or would it remain hidden?

Kathy Reichs has done it again! Bones on Ice is a novella, but with the usual style and humour which is the author’s trademark. Filled with mystery, suspense and intrigue; the usual excellent characters – all in this story, plus a preview to Speaking in Bones, which is due for publication toward the end of July 2015. Highly recommended.

Bones on Ice is a novella in the Temperance Brennan series by popular American author, Kathy Reichs. The well-connected Hallis family matriarch insists that Tempe conduct the post mortem on her daughter, whose remains are uncovered after the Nepal earthquake. Brighton Hallis died whilst scaling Mt Everest some three years previously, and her remains were unrecoverable at the time. Tempe finds many things she would expect after three years of exposure to freezing temperatures. But she also finds the unexpected, and her contact with Bright’s climbing companions raises more questions than it answers. In amongst the suspense and intrigue, Reichs manages to include lots of interesting facts about deaths on Everest, hypothermia and the bizarre associated behaviours, the effects of altitude and temperature on decay and preservation of a corpse, obtaining prints from dehydrated fingers and the effects of freezing on dentition. With its preview of the next book, Speaking in Bones, this is an excellent small dose of Tempe Brennan.

I really enjoy Kathy Reichs Bones series. This is one of the newer novellas in the series. It is a very quick and enjoyable reads. I listened to the audiobook version and found the narrator did a great job. I was drawn into this story right from the beginning. Temperance Brennan brings us on one of her many interesting cases, this one is about a frozen body. The girl was climbing Mt Everest when she died three years ago. They were only now able to bring her body off the mountain. We learn about how body decomposition happens when it is frozen and how Temperance has to defrost the body before doing the test to determine if this is actually the right woman. Of course there are twists in the plot that has us trying to figure out who dun it and if it was murder not an accident. Will Temperance solve this mystery? Is she in too deep? It is a great story for Bones fans/mystery/adrenaline junky fans!

I give this a 5 stars out of 5!

3,7 -> 4 ⭐️

A forensic investigation into the death of a body returned from Mount Everest reveals a shocking crime.

I'm a huge fan of this series and have read most all of the books yet had not heard about this novella. I just finished another book that had lots of details about the hazards and peril of summiting Everest, so this added to the fun factor with additional facts that always pique my interest. Climbing that mountain is extremely hazardous and the survival rate is such that many dead remain frozen in place, never to be recovered. Fascinating even if you aren't planning a trek or climb.

Temperance Brennan, a forensic anthropologist, is asked to confirm the identity and cause of death of a mummified and frozen corpse for a wealthy Charlotte family who believes it may be their daughter. The body was recently recovered from Mount Everest after an earthquake allowed retrieval. What was meant to be a quick favor turns quickly when Dr. Brennan finds evidence that the death of this young woman was no accident.

A fast and fun mystery with lots of forensic detail. I borrowed it from the library and enjoyed it. This can be read as a standalone as the focus is really in the particulars of this case and not much character development.

I enjoy watching the hit show Bones staring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan so I decided to jump in at book 17.5 and accepted an audio of Bones on Ice by Kathy Reichs. This novella features a preview of the next book Speaking in Bones. Brennan was personally requested to handle the identification of a frozen mummified human corpse believed to be Brighton Hallis, a young American girl who died from a fall while attempting to climb Everest. This was an engaging thriller despite its short length and while I enjoyed it, I would have preferred a full-length novel.

Brennan begins the identification process and methodically examines the severely damaged corpse. Brennan is very hands on and speaks to fellow climbers. Her forensic investigation begins to uncover anomalies that point to murder. The science and Brennan’s meticulous methods fascinated me. Her inquisitive nature gets her into trouble as she begins to unravel this mystery.
I was hoping to meet Ryan her love interest but he was only briefly mentioned. Much of the investigation takes part in the lab, on the phone, and through conversations with a local detective. I enjoyed the case but as a novella, as it did not allow the luxury of any extras or in-depth discoveries.

I enjoyed the author's writing style and attention to detail. She mixes in humor and interesting facts as she constructs a clever and suspenseful tale. She lays out clues and together Brennan and the reader solve the murder.

The narration fell flat but the blame may be entirely mine. I kept imagining Emily Deschanel voice. (The actress who portrays Brennan on the hit TV show Bones) I think she performed Brennan's narrative well particularly her inflections and tones, but I don't feel it necessarily enhanced my experience.

Overall Bones of Ice was an interesting case and excellent way to try this author. I am hoping to read Speaking in Bones next.

Kathy Reichs uses all her skills in this unique novella, which sees forensic anthropologist Temperance (Tempe) Brennan involved in a cold case like no other, foul play atop Mount Everest. When Tempe is called in to work on a weekend, she's less than impressed. Once she learns that she's personally been requested to handle the identification of a frozen, mummified corpse, things get a little more interesting. While trekking up Mount Everest, Brighton Hallis perished amongst the elements, the rest of her crew finding her body on their descent. It's been three years and Tempe must work with what she has to determine if this is, in fact, Brighton. With over 200 bodies scattered around the "death zone" area of Everest, it is anything but a foregone conclusion that these remains are those of Brighton. Reichs explores the world of mountain climbing, where individuals lose their identity and become known by their coloured clothing, the only differential when surrounded by snow and ice. What appears to be a simple body succumbing to the elements soon becomes a murder victim, leaving Tempe to piece it all together. Was it one of the climbing crew with a vendetta that wanted Brighton to die up where no one would find her, or perhaps a rival climber who wanted glory? All this leaves the legal argument of charging anyone in Charlotte with a crime that took place in Nepal. In her anthropological sleuthing way, Tempe pieces it all together, but finds herself more confused the further she digs. A wonderful novella to bridge the time until the next full-length Tempe Brennan novel hits the shelves.

Reichs remains the queen of her craft and is as entertaining as she is educational. Tackling forensics in ways no other author (outside the field) has ever attempted, she keeps the reader curious and wondering throughout this piece. From the medical terminology surrounding climbing to the legal matters of a murder on the other side of the world, Reichs leaves few rocks unturned in a short period. Pepper in some humour and a little character bridging between the two major novels and you have a wonderful novella that is sure to tide avid fans over, but not for too long.

Kudos, Madam Reichs for all your hard work and entertaining writing. I am a true fan and cannot wait for more Tempe.

Veramente interessante venire a scoprire così tante informazioni in così poche pagine.

Grazie.

A frozen mummified human corpse frozen in the death zone of Everest for three years is finally returned to Charlotte at the behest of the victim's mother, a wealthy, influential socialite. As the body defrosts, Tempe Brennan has to confirm the identity, which is hard because the teeth are smashed and the finger tips terribly frozen. I figured out the plot before she did. I was disappointed that Reichs completely ignored what happened with Detective Ryan at the end of the last novel although as she has done in each of her novellas, she basically has taken up a cause.

Really enjoyed this novella. Seeing how Brennan puts all the clues together and works things out - just love it. Also gave me some insight into the dangers of mountain climbing and what can happen that I never thought of - quite chilling (if you'll pardon the pun). There's also the intriguing hint of Ryan's proposal from the previous book, which she is still mulling over, making Brennan such a human character - her life isn't without its bumps! Can't wait to start the next book!

Still not clear on why the Medical Examiner is the one going out and interviewing people and solving all these crimes in Reichts books, instead of the police....but ok. This one was a fast read. Entertaining. Rather predictable but something for a quick plane ride read.

In spite of being barely a novella, this was one of the better Tempe stories I've read in a while. It's a shame Reichs didn't flesh this out into a full novel as I think it could have done well.

Bones on Ice

This story was the one that provided the least surprise for me. But all the information about getting bodies off Mount Everest, international transportation of a body, and other factors make it a really interesting read. The main focus of the story is the identification of cause of death for a rich kid whose body had been recovered from Everest after a few years frozen atop the mountain. A very wealthy patron is insistent that her daughters' case be a priority, and this patron has the ear of the mayor and the chief of police. But the story takes a very interesting twist. And Temperance ends up a little battered and bruised while pursuing the clues to figure out the truth.

Read the review on my blog Book Reviews and More and reviews of other books by Kathy Reichs. Note this story in my region is now only available in the compilation The Bone Collection: Four Novellas, along side 2 other previously published stories and 1 new novella.

This is another quick-read novella. This time, Tempe is involved in autopsying the frozen remains of a young socialite who died on Mount Everest. The challenge with the frozen remains includes a complete lack of dentition; her teeth have been smashed out, making a positive ID more challenging.

Throw in that the young woman's family is connected to local big-wigs and making noises about wanting their daughter identified rapidly and you have a problem.

It's complicated when, of course, Tempe discovers that hypothermia is not the most likely cause of death.

If you already know most of the players from the series, like Larrabee and Slidell, the lack of character development in the novella won't matter as much. The "whodunnit" didn't surprise me so much ... but the "howdunnit" did. An enjoyable little read.

So for me as a short story, this checked a lot of boxes. The pacing was great, I cared about the MC, and the story was intriguing and kept me wanting more. Reichs did a great job describing the forensic medical examiner and her role in trying to discover the cause of death from halfway around the world. I definitely added some Temperance books to my TBR.

I don't often read novellas so wasn't sure what to expect from this. 120 pages was just enough to get some individual story plot, some character detail relating to the long-running series plot line and a lot of extra knowledge about Everest! The thing I always love about murder mysteries is the detail that the authors go into about the particular theme/setting of the murder; in this case, hiking to Everest summit. I feel like I've come away with tons of extra interesting knowledge about the subject, which I didn't necessarily expect to when I started.

In essence, short but sweet!

Kathy Reichs is one of my favourite authors and she did a bang up job on this very short novella. With an apology and a dedication to the people, and in particular the Sherpas, this novella was written before the April 2015 earthquake and not to capitalize from a disaster.

How long does a body take to thaw? Ms. Reichs certainly did her research on all things frozen.

2 thumbs up and 4 solid stars (I don't like novellas - they are too much of a tease).

Loved it. I was impressed with how much information about mountain climbing Reichs was able to stuff into a novella length story. The tales of those left behind in the dead zone of Mt Everest gave the book a chilling reality. I guessed the twist but was entertained throughout.
My only beef would be the use of summit as a verb. Much like medaling in the Olympics, I guess I shouldn't be surprised to see mountain climbers changing this noun to a verb.

I have read many many of Kathy Reichs books but this one has been in my "To Be Read" list quite a while. I was wanting a bit of a change of genre so I decided this would be it.
So happy I chose it because as soon as I read it there was the preview for Speaking in Bones at the back, so now I am going to order that one, maybe catch up on a couple I have missed.
It was like meeting up with an old friend again after a couple of years apart, you knew all about her but not what she had been up to in the interim and it was great catching up.
This case was interesting, the daughter of a very well to do lady had died on an expedition to climb Everest. Temperance was asked specifically to take on the case of identifying the corpse that has been shipped over from Nepal - ne expense spared.
The corpse was little more than a mummified body that has frozen solid after being on the mountain for so long. Her first job was to slowly thaw out the body, but it should be an easy enough task after that.
Famous last words. Temp got the name of the fellow climbers in Brighton Hallis climbing group, and went to question them to see if she could get any information while the thawing was taking place. There were four others beside Brighton in the group, not one of them was what could be called friendly or open. They all had hidden agendas for being on the climb, the main one was a sort of audition for a tv show based around mountain climbing and they all wanted that part as well as many other climbers there at the time.
As she ploughs through all the evidence she has and the information that the body is giving her, she comes to realise that this is anything other than a straight forward case, it could be murder, a case of mistaken identity or a number of other things. Being as tenacious as she is, she will not let it go until she gets to the truth even when her own life is in danger.
A very good book which I read in one night. The only thing missing was Detective Ryan, him of the sexy blue eyes, and great body, who has proposed to Temp just before this case. Where is he? Will she accept his proposal after all these years of being together on and off.

A quick read with a familiar character cast, although this time sticking primarily with Temperance Brennan as she is asked to determine cause of death of a child of a prominent southern family. Unusual in the sense that the death occurred three years previously on the top of mount Everest and had only just arrived.

Mayhem occurs when the cause ends up being anything but accidental.

Great read with a quick turnaround!

Fascinating read, fast paced and if you don't know this book series was used as the basis for the TV series Bones. I found this very interesting because in one of my book clubs we read and discussed Into Thin Air. This is a good series.
