At eight, Kathy Scolari failed to rescue her younger brother from a fire. His death left her with both emotional and physical scars. Her entire being is closed off from emotions, living for the day she will be reunited with her brother.
Candy Kane also has emotional scars. Unlike Kathy, she has never allowed them to hold her back from truly living. There is one exception. She has never allowed herself to truly love someone or receive love.
What happens when Kathy, a firefighter, rescues Candy, a bookstore owner, from a fire? Will the firefighter finally learn to live? Will the bookstore owner learn to fully open her heart? Or have they both been too badly burned?

Going through kindle Unlimited i stumbled upon this one i had put on the back burner to read. Its a long book and it coild have been shorter but a lot things kept being repeated such as how Kathy was a lone wolf or how Candy and her family's relationship was rough. And it wasn't even a brief mention of it; it was like a refresher as if the reader was reading it in parts. Anyway...the book started off slow as many people have said but it worked for the direction I thought tue book was heading. Which was soulmates who found each other and flashbacks to previous lives...kinda like an episode of Castle when Becket and Castle try to find the elusive Blue Butterfly (geek moment but i loved that show at least early seasons). Let me get back on track...so for the first maybe 25% of tue book that looks to be where the story is headed and then wham bam smack you get hit with not one, not two, but three (maybe) different plot twists that honestly felt like it should have been a different book in the series all together. To enjoy this book fully you really have to suspend reality and take Murphy's Law as well law cause once the two meet all goes to hell. I also felt Kathy was like the female human version of Pinocchio cause she was very very naive about everything. Now mental issues i understand but she doesnt have any really. It was like at 33 she had the understanding of the world of a 10 year old which would make sense say she was in a coma or something but she was a firefighter...a firefighter. They are technically engrained in society. So why the three star with all the issues i seem to have? Good question but I really I couldnt bring myself to rate it 2 stars cause I really wanted to know what happened. Plus free on kindle!
I actually DNFed this book because of the over the top family drama and just the plot being ridiculous, but it still gets four stars because I loved the character of Kathy. Picture Edward Scissorhands as a lesbian firefighter.
I will admit in the beginning of the story, it was a little slow going for me but as I had advised another reader earlier in the week, sometimes stories that start off slow to get your attention will turn out to be pretty good. This story was like that for me and I am looking forward to the next installment. Good read.
I was looking for a firefighter main character and loved the pairing of a bookstore owner and writers. If you love opposites attract mixed with fires romantic relationship, this book is for you. Supporting family characters you love them or can't stand them. Loved that the author addresses some major issues . Shows how delicate love can be and how it build strength and courage. Warning - you may need tissues. I am ready for book2!
You can never go wrong with firefighters or bookstores in my book. The characters were developed enough to move the story along and keep you wanting more. The issues both women have to work through give just enough conflict to draw the reader in.
This book is amazing. I had a hard time putting the book down. The characters draw you in. This book drew me in and made me feel like I was living the story. Can't wait to read book 2.
i had high hopes for this book. It was a nice read, but i definitely regret putting down 8 dollars for it. It's sad to say that the love scenes were lacking something, i don't know what but it made me skip them just because i got the feeling it was a bit boring. I apreciate the effort put into developing the relationships and the story building, but some times it got a bit longwinded or repetitive.
This is a story of soul mates and their struggle to accept each other's love. One of them has extreme issues with her emotions due to a terrible loss as a child. I did really like the story, however, using descriptions instead of names is a bit irritating. I am looking forward to Twice Burned.
