Can be read as a standalone.

I wish I liked this story more, but I wasn't able to connect with the characters. Brook was whiny and annoying. The story talked about her strengths, but I didn't get any of it. She was emotional about everything.

Dwayne was more enjoyable, but I felt like he didn't do much. You would think there would be a lot of action when he and his brothers were busting a human trafficking group. I was a bit sad that nothing exciting happened. Sometimes it even felt like the story was shifting focus away from Dwayne and to his brothers. It was like the book was agreeing with me that Dwayne wasn't interesting.

I also didn't like was how Brook and Dwayne would dance around each other throughout the entire story. It was driving me absolutely crazy.

I enjoy reading dark books, and human traffic is some serious stuff, but as a fictional story, this didn't spark anything in me. I am interested in reading about Dwayne's brothers though.

Brooke is Dwayne's best friend, has been since kindergarten. Dwayne has wanted more from Brooke for for just as long, but he stayed back, watched as she fell in love, got married, had a child, and stood by her when that marriage fell apart. So when Brooke's 17year old daughter, Hailey goes missing, Dwayne steps up, both as Brooke's best freind, and as a Detective in the Nyack police deptartment, trying to shut down a drug ring at Hailey's school. Things take a turn for the worst when they discover just what and who Hailey has got mixed up in. But through it all, Dwayne is right there, by Brooke's side. Something changes along the way, and Dwayne makes it known what he wants, WHO he wants. Will Brooke give in, or will she hold Dwayne's past against him?

This is book two in the series, the Empire Blue Series, and I have not read book one, Intimate Danger. This will go on my wish list though. I did not feel I missed out on anything, but just because I wanna read it!

BECAUSE I LOVED THIS!

The right amount of history, both for Dwayne and Brooke. The right amount of now. The right amount of danger, of passion, of being kept on your toes, of falling in love, falling out, and of making up again. We get to hear from both Brooke and Dwayne, but also Hailey, as she spirals downwards, and we hear from Luke, Dwayne's younger brother, as he attempts to save Hailey, all the time fighting with himself. These Gonzales boys are amazing! They pull together when one of their own is threatened, and lets be honest here, Brooke, and by extension, Hailey, is one of their own. As Hailey puts it, Brooke and Dwayne have been pussy-fotting it around each other for years!

Some difficult topics dealt with here, and some readers may find that they have triggers. Forced drug addiction, drug dealing, human trafficking and child prostitution are all dealt with here. Extremely wel, extremely sensitively and all very, very well written.

I see *at least* two more stories branching off this one. Hailey and Luke have something to say, I'm sure and when they do, that's gonna be amazing, but equally, I fear, heartbreaking for them both. And another brother, Mike. What happened to him before he called Dwayne, and its after effects need a book too, I reckon. I'm following this series to see who is next!

This is the first book of D.C.Stone's I've read, I hope it won't be the last. Her style of writing, her way with words, her storylines are all excellent, and fabulous, and I want to read more.

Wow, just wow. I'm pretty sure I started my review of the first book in this series like this, and DC does not disappoint with this instalment.
Dwayne is all kinds of yummy, and seeing him struggle with his feelings for the one woman he's always loved and never had... oh yes.

Without giving too much away, this book was an intensely emotional read, especially when you're the mother of daughters, like I am. I confess I had to put my Kindle down at times and take a deep breath, because the subject matter fed into all of my worst nightmare scenarios.

However, DC handles the subject matter with great skill and compassion, and of course this story has a HEA so all's well, but man oh man. It's been a while since a story caused me to shed tears, laugh out loud, and get all gooey all at the same time, but this one has.

I believe I mentioned how yummy Dwayne is, but I'll do so again. He is just swoon worthy, and there were plenty of times I wanted to strangle the heroine. While I could understand her reservations, I also wanted to give her a good shake and tell her to see what's right under her freaking nose, lol.

Then there are the supporting characters. Brooke's daughter is a typical teen and seeing the relationship she has with her mother made me smile, and brought with it echoes of home. No doubt why I found reading what happens to her so tough. However, that is also the one thing I really like about DC's writing, the realism.

It grabs you, hits you between the eyes and makes you root for her characters. And then, there are Dwayne's brothers. Lordy me, I could feel the testosterone leap at me through my e-readers. Again his interaction with his brothers is just perfect, and so realistic, you can't help but smile.

Sharp dialogue, great descriptions, intense emotions, and hot sex. This story has it all. Read it! Nuff said. I'm looking forward to the next instalment, especially Dwayne's brother Luke's story. We only get to meet him toward the end of the book, but he plays a pivotal role and he stole a piece of my heart. :-)

Detective Dwayne Gonzalez became my obsession in the first Empire Blue Book, Intimate Danger, and I could not wait for his book to come out. This book is based on Dwayne’s drug case. We meet Hailey, Brooke’s daughter and someone Dwayne considers a daughter, stuck in the middle of it. I will not lie to you, the beginning of this book was very difficult for me to read. Things happened to 17 year old Hailey that no mother ever wants to happen to their daughter. That being said, about 17% into the book I had to put it down and walk away for a day. But I did pick it back up because I knew there was no way DC wasn’t going to give me a happily ever after. The hunt was on for Hailey, Dwayne and Brooke’s relationship takes a turn and we were introduced to several Gonzalez brothers who come to assist in the hunt for Hailey. At this point I was extremely glad I picked the book back up.

There were moments in this book I wanted to smack Dwayne in the head and shake the hell out of Brooke. How could she not see how much Dwayne loved her over the past 17 years even with him going through woman like crazy? Once the brothers showed up I literally could not put this book down. Yep, the book I put down after only 17% became the book I could not get enough of!!!

DC’s characters are intriguing, a bit mysterious and sexy as hell. Luke Gonzalez grabbed my heart from the minute he showed up and has turned into my new obsession. Chris Gonzalez has something mysterious revolving around him and I’m looking forward to reading his book next.

So … When you pick up this book and you really should, don’t be afraid to get past the 17% read mark. You will not be disappointed.

Brooke

Dwayne

3.5 stars

There is seriously big drama here.

I counted four POVs: Harley, Brooke, Dwayne and Luke.

First, we have a teenager who should try better when choosing a boyfriend, like him not being a human trafficker!. Seriously, I can understand the need to belong to a group or wanting to be seen as mature but this girl sure took really bad decisions.

Then we have Brooke & Dwayne, these two have been friends for years though Dwayne has always wanted more.

He has a tough past and the words I love you, like he says, mean a shit- he has his reasons. He prefers action than words. And she, after her cheating ex-husband doesn't really trust the male gender.

Throw together by Harley's disappearance, they get to know what the other want from each other but their insecurities get the best of them. These two went a long path until HEA, but they got it.

And finally we have a little of Luke (25), the youngest of the Gonzales. He helps to rescue Harley from the hell she was in but it seems some sparks ignited between them. He's like I can't be lusting after an eighteen girl that has been though that kind of abuse but it seems the feeling is reciprocated. We only catch a little of them in the end, he's running from her with the work excuse. I think there will be a book about them.

I like these kind of books with the big family thing, in this case the Gonzales. Having people to take care of you when you need them, even when they're not blood related.

This was my first experience with this author. As I started reading, I discovered this was book two in a series. Despite not having read book one, I had no difficulties keeping up with this story. It focused on the long standing relationship between Dwayne and Brooke. Friends for forever, Dwayne stepped in when Brooke's husband left her and her daughter. He has practically raised Brooke's seventeen year old daughter and considers Hailey and Brooke his even though he and Brooke have never been more than friends, and he has been with plenty of other women. Just as the two begin having thoughts of more than friendship, Hailey is kidnapped into a possible sex trafficking ring. It will take police detective, Dwayne, and all of his law enforcement brothers to find a way to save her. Brooke refuses to be left out of the search, and the constant close proximity between her and Dwayne causes their chemistry to build even while it begins to tear them apart. This begins on an intensely emotional back and forth which takes their relationship to new heights but then drops it to the depths of new lows all while the search for Hailey goes from days to weeks.

I enjoyed the characters in this story, especially Dwayne's brothers. The emotions were intense with the suspense surrounding Hailey's abduction. Though the subject matter of sex trafficking is very disturbing, the details were very minimal and not written gratuitously at all.

I received an ARC from Net Galley for review.

ARC received for review

I wanted to like it, but Brooke was whiny and Dewayne just left a lot to be desired. He sure has a lot of hot brothers, and Luke kinda robbed the end away from him. There was drama, action, hot bedroom scenes, and a whole bunch of going around in circles with their relationship.

I received a copy of this book through NetGalley from Evernight Publishing for an honest review. This is a tough one to review, so bear with my below long-windedness. Looking at the other reviews, I think I'm in the minority, so please give this book a chance and form your own opinion. Goodreads defines a 3 star rating as "I liked it" but it comes off as sounding like a "C" grade which I hate.

For me I had to separate this book and think of my review from two angles. The first is the subject of the book and how serious it is. The second is my personal like/dislike of the hero and heroine. Due to the subject of the book (human trafficking), in no way can I take that lightly or say "I didn't like the book" as it's way too serious and important to address. Ms. Stone does a great job bringing awareness and giving us a personal face into this horrific reality. Given that, it was super hard for me to not be frustrated as Dwayne and Brooke spent so much time getting sidelined by their personal relationship. Every time they were focused on anything other than Hailey and her kidnapping and what horrible things might be happening to her... well I tried to put myself in Brooke's shoes and how I would react. Of course the other side is this is romance as well as mystery so you know there will be a HEA for them and we have to get there.

Brooke's "voice" eventually grew frustrating for me. She was oblivious and then resistant to Dwayne's feelings. Rightfully so due to her ex and Dwayne's pattern with women. The hero/heroine hooking up with others before they really get together themselves isn't a big trigger for me as it is for other readers. I became super conscious of it this time - not after Lucy the teacher, but a few mornings later when Brooke calls him in a panic about Hailey and he's with another random woman. Yes, he's honest with them so that part doesn't bother me. She did ask him a good question that not only checked him, but me to - why so many women? Later on when Brooke (for the umpteenth time) tells him a relationship is more than physical for her, he seems to hesitate about a committed future with her. I'm hoping this was my own misunderstanding of the scene, but what on earth was Dwayne hoping for when he was mooning over her for 17+ years?

What I really liked was the friendship and feeling of this patched together family for all of the characters. The easy relationship he had with them, his brothers, and even Charlie/Trent's relationship with his family was wonderful. I have not read the first book about Charlie (heroine) and Trent. In no way did I feel like I was missing something and should have read that first, so this can definitely be read as a standalone. A lot of series say this, but there's a disconnect for a lot and makes you feel like something is missing. The author did a great job of seamlessly continuing this world. I also really liked getting Hailey's point of view and it felt authentic and personal. Her plight really drew me into the story and seeing what was going on through a 17 year olds eyes. I think it definitely set up a strong story for her future book (I'm making an assumption she and Luke get one).I know that was a lot and some very picky, but Ms. Stone does a great job addressing a serious issue and drawing you into the story. I am looking forward to future books by her and reading more of her work.

Again, give this important book a chance and form your own impressions and opinions!

Stone created a romance filled with a hint of suspense, a bunch of familial togetherness, and a whole lotta male hotness that’s read-me-now-and-spread-the-word good!

I respected Brooke’s attachment to her daughter; it being nothing more than a loving mother trying desperately to raise and protect her offspring. Although Hailey’s father is long gone, she’s always had a father in Dwayne, and he’s played the part to a T. The strong connection between the trio is based on what he has with his adoptive family, and they, too, love the red-headed look-alike duo. Despite Dwayne’s love for Brooke, he’s lead a full life as a bachelor, although no one has ever caught her attention the way she does.

Stone played it safe, but not boring, I’m glad to say, with the circumstances surrounding Hailey’s kidnapping. I must admit, for a moment I feared I’d have to put the book down, but she made the story more than readable, without taking away from the believability. The relationship between Brooke and Dwayne switched gears amid the turmoil, but their connection didn’t take anything away from the mother’s love for or determination to bring her daughter home. There were heartwarming shifts between Brooke’s love for the two most important people in her life, and not one time do they look bad for exploring their relationship under the circumstances. This couldn’t have been an easy fete, so most definitely, I give Stone kudos.

From beginning to end, the story is captivating and held my attention like a gambler during a lottery draw, and I’m glad to say, I came out a big winner!

Five stars for Intimate Fear!
I loved the first book in D.C. Stone's Empire Blue series (Intimate Danger) and loved the second book, too. It's got all the ingredients I crave in a read – deadly intrigues, near-hopeless romance, and sizzling chemistry between sexy, headstrong characters. Oh, and the author being such a good writer, plunging me into the scenes and making me feel everything as if it were happening to me, naturally puts Intimate Fear on this reader's best-book-of-the-year shelf :)

Brooke has tried so hard to be a good mom but her daughter Hailey is growing up and wants to go out with a boy, she isn't happy but she knows that she has to let her have some space.
Dwayne has wanted to be with Brooke for as long as he can remember but they are such great friends that he can't tell her about the way that he feels it goes deeper than he even thought possible as he has a way with woman and he never gets serious.
Hailey is so happy that her mom has let her go out with Jaxon and she wants to be accepted by his friends so she lets him inject her with heroin but things go badly, he rapes her and she can't tell her mom as it will hurt her. She keeps quiet but Dwayne knows that something is up but before they can talk she disappears.
Brooke doesn't know what to do as they fought and now she isn't home she turns to Dwayne as she knows that he will find her daughter.
What Dwayne finds out is every parents worse nightmare but he will find Hailey and bring her home.
Dwayne & his brothers go looking and what they see and find is something that will stay with them all for a very long time.
Can Brooke push Dwayne away, she loves him but he can't love her the way that she needs. After all they have been through can they stay away from each other or will they both realise that they want & need each other?
A dark read, every parent's worst nightmare, how do you protect your child from the evil in the world? A really well written book that kept me interested from the beginning til the end and wanting more. I was lucky to receive a copy via Netgalley.

Book 2 in the Empire Blue series is full of danger, drug addiction, and human trafficking. I have not read book 1 yet and can say that in no way did that lessen the reading enjoyment of Intimate Fear.

Emotions run high when Brooke's daughter, Hailey fails to come home after a date. Brooke falls apart, understandably so, however I was shocked that she did not reach out for help sooner. Dwayne is her best friend and has been a father figure for Hailey growing up. Why would she not call him immediately. That is the only part of this story I had strong disagreement with. Dwayne has deep feelings for Brooke, which he has hidden very well from Brooke. Those feelings come to the forefront as the story progresses. Brooke realizes she wants more from Dwayne as well.

Dwayne has several brothers, tho they are all adopted they have very strong family ties. They are all in some kind of public protection field, which is very handy in tracking down Hailey's whereabouts. I loved the suspense and angst that this book throws at you. I was devastated by what Hailey was forced to endure at the hands of her boyfriend, someone she trusted, until it was too late.

I am looking forward to reading more from DC Stone. The brothers have stories coming, I can feel it. :)

Yikes. This book was intense! Seriously. Uh. I tend to read a lot of darker books and this one is defiantly that.
This book has really great reviews and I did not like it.. like at all. For lots of reasons. My main reason though, I can't stand any of the characters. Maybe Brooke was okay.
My issue was Dwayne.. He is into Brooke... She is single... he can screw every girl in town but can't tell Brooke how he feels.
I wasn't feeling the book. I hate idiot girls. Hailey was an idiot. Isn't there a saying out there.. something like Fool me once, shame on me; Fool me twice. I don't know. Something like that. But you get pressured into drugs once and get raped... and then you go back to the same guy... yeah.. NO! DUMB. run like hell! I don't give shit if he offers you a million dollars covered in yummy dark chocolate. you freaking stab him in the eye and run. This all could have been avoided if Hailey would have just stabbed Jaxon in the eye. I'm just sayin.

This is very emotional book, very intense, there were some very difficult subjects dealt with in the story, child prostitution, human trafficking and forced drug addiction. Not everyone's choice of reading. But this was a very well written story.

Brooke and Dwayne have been friends since kindergarten. Dwayne has watched Brooke fall in love with someone else and marry have his child then let her cry on his shoulder when they separated and finally divorced. He's always wanted more from their relation but he's held back and stayed in the friends zone. But when her daughter disappears he has to step forward to help as a friend and also as the police Detective he is.

Very entertaining, and a great page turner.

Brooke Mason is a single mother who left her cheating husband years ago. Dwayne Gonzalez is a cop who has secretly wanted his friend Brooke since they were kids. Awkward phrasing and strange wording made this book unpleasant to read and the characters' behavior was beyond ridiculous. When Brooke's 17 year old daughter goes missing, she's worried sick one moment and completely lusting after Dwayne the next moment, when he comes to help. So, the writing is bad on all fronts. The sex and sexual attraction were repellent since they were going on during the search for the daughter, who was in the hands of human traffickers who were shooting her up with heroine, raping her and forcing her into prostitution.
