Paradise Lost: When a Tropical Getaway Turns Bloody
Dead Killer. Live Cash: The Ultimate Moral Dilemma
No Way Out: Paul Cleave’s Relentless New Nightmare

Intro
Somebody Always Comes Looking is the highly anticipated thriller by multi-award-winning New Zealand crime fiction mastermind Paul Cleave (favorite author). Known for his pitch-black humor, relentless pacing, and brutal Christchurch-rooted narratives, Cleave temporarily removes his characters from home only to plunge them into an international nightmare. As a long-time fan who has read every single one of his books, I can confidently say this thriller pushes his signature tension to a global, white-knuckle extreme.

The Hook
What happens when two damaged souls kill the serial killer hunting them in paradise, only to find a life-changing fortune hidden in his room?

Elevator Pitch
Luca and Katie, two disappointed strangers from Christchurch, meet at a tropical resort in Asia. Their attempts to escape their pasts are shattered when a sinister predator targets them. After a desperate fight for survival leaves the hunter buried, they discover his stash of untraceable cash. Keeping it means figuring out how to smuggle it back to New Zealand—but a bag of bloody money always attracts a swarm of ruthless predators.

Setting
A seemingly serene, sun-soaked holiday resort in Malaysia, that rapidly dissolves into a claustrophobic, dangerous foreign underworld of violence, big money, and drugs. A subtle, looming shadow of Christchurch, New Zealand, representing the home the characters desperately want to return to—if they can survive.

Vibe
Sweat-inducing, pulse-pounding, paranoia-fueled adrenaline.
A blend of No Country for Old Men meets a tropical, dark-comedy nightmare.

Genre
International Crime Thriller / Dark Psychological Suspense.

Themes
~The illusion of escape: Running away from your demons only introduces you to new ones.
~Greed vs. Survival: How quickly moral boundaries blur when a life-changing shortcut presents itself.
~The domino effect of violence: A single act of self-defense triggering a catastrophic chain reaction.

Standout Characters
~Luca: Damaged, cynical, and weary from his life back in Christchurch, forced to find a ruthless inner strength.
~Katie: Disappointed by her past but fiercely resilient, proving to be an unpredictable and sharp ally in a crisis.
~The Stranger / The Snake: A menacing, silent predator whose presence lingers over the plot long after he is gone, accompanied by an actual, unforgettable snake.

Author Writing Standout
Paul Cleave’s signature gift is his ability to weave stomach-churning dread with sharp, laugh-out-loud dark humor. In this book, he masterfully balances the terrifying reality of a foreign criminal underworld with the absurd, logistical nightmare of two ordinary people trying to figure out how to smuggle millions of illegal dollars across international borders.

Takeaway
Easy money is never free; it simply defers the payment to whoever comes to collect it next.

Title Significance
The title" Somebody Always Comes Looking" serves as an absolute law of the thriller universe. Whether it is the police looking for a missing person, a cartel looking for a stolen bag of cash, or the ghosts of your past actions catching up to you, nobody ever gets to bury a body and walk away clean.

Metaphor
The bag of cash is a glittering venomous snake. It is beautiful, life-altering, and instantly hypnotic, but the longer you hold onto it, the more certain you are to get bitten.

Why You Should Read
If you love fast, relentless thrillers where ordinary people are forced into extraordinary, violent chess matches, this is a masterclass. For die-hard Cleave fans, it delivers the same razor-sharp character work and macabre wit of The Cleaner, but amplified by a high-stakes international setting.

My Thoughts
Vacation checklist:
Sunscreen, passport... and a shovel to bury a serial killer.
Paul Cleave is back with a white-knuckle ride that proves paradise can be deadly.

As a long-time fan who has devoured Cleave's entire backlist, I loved seeing him stretch his wings outside Christchurch while keeping his core DNA intact. The pacing is aggressive, and the chemistry between Luca and Katie feels incredibly authentic to his style of flawed, deeply human protagonists. The inclusion of the foreign setting adds a brilliant layer of vulnerability—they don't know the layout, they don't know the local players, and they are completely isolated.

Verdict 5/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟Stars.
"A gripping, international black-hearted vacation from hell that proves Paul Cleave remains the king of high-tension New Zealand crime. "

Let's say you find a bag of money. And...the money belongs to a not-good person. Do you leave it? Do you take it? And if you take it, how do you get a sizeable amount of money back home? And if you take it....how do you know the owner of the money won't come looking for it?

Questions I would normally never find myself asking but pondered the entire time I read this book. I have read every Paul Cleave novel and he has never phoned it in, never recycled a plot, never half stepped. Every book feels like the best damn book I have ever read.

So......there are a couple of points where I thought: why do all that? You doing too much! Just... leave it! But that wouldn't be a Cleave character, now would it?

Another solid thriller from Cleave about a serial killer, a bag of money, two innocents caught up in the mess, conflicted cops and lots of bad guys. And yes, someone always comes looking for the money, a lesson our intrepid pair should have followed. It's got great characters, strong writing, plenty of action and violence and a nice sense of humor. I've been a Cleave fan for a long time and he does not disappoint here. A worthy entry in the genre. 4-4.5 stars. Highly recommended.

Best yet, and that's high praise, as all Cleave's books have been page-turners. The snake almost put me off, but it was such a great storyline, that I had to read on to see what happened next.
Katie and Lucas meet up at a Malaysian resort - and for too brief a moment, it looks as though these two will have a fabulous holiday - and then, things go wrong in spectacular ways.
Highly recommended.

A deliciously dark, insanely twisted, and a pulse-pounding thriller which takes the reader on a wild ride in every sense of the word. One of the best crime novels that I have ever read and I have read a whole lot. And the ending...It takes a very brave author to come up with this ending. I don't want to elaborate as it would be a major spoiler but I loved the ending. A great read.

Loved it! Cracking pace, a real roller coaster ride. Just when you think they’re saved, they’re not, and then they are, and then they’re not. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing
