So good. Such a unique premise I never expected to read an antihero story but I loved every moment of it

For full disclosure I received a copy of the book for an honest review, which in no way altered my opinion of the book. I’ll try not to have too many spoilers.

First of all, I really enjoyed this book. It reminds me a lot of 1984 mixed with The Running Man. Like both you have a dystopian society, where nearly everyone is monitored by chips in their heads. Think or say the wrong thing and zap, you’re dead. All of this is controlled by The Moderator and his goons.

One of the things I really liked about the book is Brian painted it with broad strokes. He gave you enough information to form a picture in your head, but didn’t get so detailed to tell you exactly what that picture should be.

I admired his ability to make some of the bad guys sympathetic while making the others completely detestable.

In one form or another we’ve all run into a Troll in our lives. Whether it be on message boards or that one family member who always causes problems. But Brian found a way to make this one sympathetic. Granted Troll liked to start arguments just to get a reaction, but he was also very insightful. He knew which buttons to push and how to push them to get the reaction he desired. At the beginning of the book I didn’t have much sympathy towards him, but towards the end I was cheering him on.

There were a couple of story items I wish would’ve gone a little bit differently, but that’s just a reader’s preference and having a couple favorites. Without going into spoilers I just wish certain things would’ve gone a different way.

It’s a pretty quick read and I’m eagerly anticipating the next one.
