Quest of the Alpha

Rate this book
The wolves have returned to the Sierra Nevada.

Lane knows that if the pack of misfit adoptee wolf-shifters is going to survive and re-establish the high Sierra territory, he'll need to find an alpha female. A natural alpha. A strong female who will be up to the task of becoming matriarch of the new pack.
When he meets Tara hiking through the mountains alone, he knows he's found his new mate. Now he just has to explain the whole were-wolf thing and hope she doesn't freak out.

Tara thought the incredibly sexy man with the piercing green eyes just might turn out to be more than a vacation hook-up. He seemed genuinely into her curvy figure and everything was going just fine until he revealed that he's really a werewolf--and he wants her to be his new mate and become the pack's alpha female.
Just her luck. She finally finds a great guy who's into her, and he turns out to be a crazy man!

Inspired by the real lives and loves of the women that she's known personally, Claire prefers to create heroines for real life-- what we see in ourselves, what we see in others, and what we want to be.

A little too curvy? A little past our prime? A little too picky to settle for anything less than the real thing in the right package? Claire's heroines always meet their match-- and their mate--whether it's a ruggedly handsome adventurer, a seriously sexy alpha shifter, or just the new neighbor across the hall.

So whether you prefer your happy endings with a dose of reality or in the paws of a sexy shapeshifter, Claire probably has a story for you.

Most of Claire's books are in short story format because that's what she loves to read herself. Perfect for a bedtime story or a lunch break read.

This seemed to be an unedited rough draft of an excerpt from the middle of a longer book. Punctuation, spelling, and grammar was horrible.

My Thoughts - 4 out of 5 Unicorns - I really liked it!!!

The cover is very appealing :)

Okay, I’m not sure because it doesn’t say it anywhere, but I think this is a serial because of the abrupt ending which tends to be typical in a serial because cliffhangers are always involved. This is for adults only due to the steamy content, and it is around 50 or so pages :)

I really like Tara because she is much braver than me :) I always say I want to go hiking, but yeah doing it alone sort of terrifies me…lol Lane is the sexy werewolf who is looking for a mate. I liked the story, and it had me at the end. I definitely want to keep reading so I can see what happens because as I indicated, it leaves off at a cliffhanger….not a horrible one but you still want to know :)

I recommend this to my shifter lovin’ friends who enjoy serials whether this one is one or not :)

Paranormal romance. This is novella length, so we get a story that just ends. If you want the next installment, you have to pay for it.

This is a pretty good story. I have a problem with a woman hiker hooking up with a total stranger (no matter HOW hot) without protection. Bad enough hiking alone with him. Fortunately for her, Lane is looking at her as a mate. First he some convincing to do.

Fun short read.

Strong female. Respectful male. Both needing the same thing. Just the journey there through remarkable scenery. Will be more on these characters.

Quest of the Alpha is the first in the Sierra Moon series by Claire Ryann. We begin the book with a pair of brothers, Lane and Diego. They have a problem; they need a breeding pair for their shifter pack of wolves. Tara, a lone hiker, has come camping and is unaware that the new partner, Lane, she's been hiking with is a wolf shifter. They develop strong feelings for each other and soon Lane needs to find the right way to explain to his situation to her.

For a female alpha, I think the author has done well with Tara. From her internal narration in the beginning of her portions, Tara has a strong personality. She strives to do what she feels is best for her. She kind of lacks confidence when it comes to her weight, but I feel like the author can develop her well in that area in future, if she gets the right kind of encouragement from Lane or other characters. She's fairly strong willed and I think that she could do well as a female leader of a pack. For Lane, I think that his character is reasonably well developed considering the past we've been presented. I wouldn't call him a true alpha (in anything but the eldest of the pack) as we haven't seen enough of his strong personality. However, from the past we've seen, it seems that he didn't come to the position out of strength in the first place. Regardless, I think that he's a fairly interesting character. I appreciate the past with his wife and the potential of his relationship with Tara. I think that the relationship between Lane and Tara is fairly innocent and very sweet. It's obvious that, right from the beginning, they have feelings for and are reasonably attracted to each other. I also think that they feel quite natural together. To me, I certainly don't feel like their relationship is forced. It's very pleasant to have such a warm relationship. As for the other characters, I don't think we've seen enough of them yet, but I think there are some interesting characters to look into for the future of the series.

I think that the plot is interesting and their problem- lack of a female alpha- presents a sort of realistic crisis for that sort of situation. In a way, the problem was solved a little bit too easily and gives the title a misleading aspect; there isn't a "quest" for the alpha female as one of the pack just goes for a walk and happens upon her. However, on that point, I appreciate that getting her back to the pack proves to be a bit harder. I also liked that near the end, we got a sort of glimpse into the potential problems for the future of the series, introducing the mountain lion and possibly some rivalry / enemy. I know that not everyone appreciates a cliff hanger, but I think the author has presented it well in this situation. The supernatural aspects with the shifting seemed fairly well integrated to the book and I thought it interesting to present the idea of some of the other women in the pack to be "more wolf than woman" and that they weren't good options as a mate because of such a thing. It certainly gives me curiousity as to the past of some of these other characters Though Lane and Tara are the primary people, I would like to see a bit more about the others and what led them to this pack.

Overall, I liked the story. It was fairly well developed, kept me interested and I am certainly looking forward to reading more of the series.

Cliffhanger serial. Putting that up there, right up front, since I apparently missed it when I got this on Amazon. Still, it was free at the time (sucker you into the series) so I can't complain too much.

As far as characters go, they're all right. Not much development between them, mostly just the instant attraction part, but then it's only about 60 pages. Tara specifically is good. She's relatable, and she could definitely be developed into a good female alpha character. Though I wasn't keen on her hooking up with a random stranger while solo hiking. Yes, I know - plot purposes - but that's a serious safety consideration that she only realizes at the very end. "Hey, the only person in the whole world who knows where I am right now is a complete stranger whom I'm worried is crazy!"

The main reason I have it as Just OK is that it is, in fact, a serial. I get so frustrated with that gimmick. I can stand a series having longer plot lines that develop over the course of several books. I just get irritated when each book within said series isn't a full plot unto itself. Here? Basically the leads meet, feel (and act on) the strong physical attraction between them, and he comes clean about being a shifter. No real plot arcs that come to resolution within this particular volume before we end on a cliffhanger awaiting book 2. And to get the whole story, we have to buy two more books (or have KU). I know authors have to make a living same as all of us, but I'd rather have one standalone book that I pay for once instead of having a whole series to buy (for all of Lane and Tara's story, right now it's $7 for less than 200pgs of material).

Alternating 3rd person POV between the leads and Diego, one of the other wolves in the pack. No real pattern to the alternating (sometimes it was paragraph to paragraph), though the author was fairly good about giving clues to the reader about which character's thoughts were featured at that point. No cheating, no angst, but also no real plot development (60 pages, remember). Cliffhanger.

Would I read more? Possibly. I enjoyed the writing fairly well, but like I said, this format tends to irritate me. So maybe stand-alones in the series.

The wolf was right, this woman was for him.

It was hella sexy. She decided to surrender to that fantasy and deal with reality later. What a FURRIFIC story!! Well until the extremely abrupt NON-ending that is! But did you see that cover? Holy hotness Batman! It makes up for the abrupt ending in my opinion! *naughty grin* However, it does NOT take anything away from this exceptional story! I love all of the unique factors & qualities that Claire has given to her shifters & the humans “some combination of factors had awakened an almost animal instinct within her”, as well as to their situations, predicaments and histories, both personal & species. This story pretty much only deals with Tara & Lane, which I thought was a brilliantly bold move! Except for a couple of 'hiccups', the storyline moves forward so fluidly that it not only caught my attention, but it kept me focused on the story from the very beginning. I am very impressed with Claire's writing style! There was many a time that I burst out laughing, gasped, almost cried, did cry or wanted to give Tara a huge hug, all while frantically reading to find out what was going to happen, but at the same time I wanted to read slowly so I could be sure to not miss anything! I like how Claire has made Tara so real by being a bigger girl with all of the "big girl" thoughts, concerns, problems and idiosyncrasies, thereby making her a REAL character & one I could oh so very much relate to, sympathize with and feel for. Great job making Tara into a real women Claire!! That factor alone makes me love you & your books! But of course there are many other attributes to this story, enough to make any reader fall in love with the story as I have!

Sierra Moon Book l-Quest of the Alpha is the birth of an incredible shifter series. I love series; they're TV mini-series only in a book. This story focuses on Lane and Tara. Lane (wolf) a sexy, strapping, powerful alpha who is in desperate need to find a mate and Tara a curvy, independent, sassy, beautiful hiker.

Claire's talent as a writer truly shines as she lures you into this heart-pounding story. Each scene is vividly described as the author pulls feelings from the reader and leaves you wanting more.

The story has everything; banter, danger, family issues, impressive and engaging characters, some tears, and sizzling, heart-throbbing, pulsating romance.

I loved this story; it is well written, the imagination of the author is brilliant, a captivating read. I so can't wait for the next book. When reading a series the possibilities are endless. {I received an arc for an honest review}. Without reservations I highly recommend this book, the author and the series.

I was given a complimentary copy for an honest review by author Claire Ryann. This is book 1 of the Sierra Moon series by the author.

Lane is the alpha of a small pack and he is being pressured to mate after loosing his family, but he really is not interested in it yet. Tera is spending time hiking and enjoying her time alone but when she meets a sexy stranger she isn't sure he is into her. Together they find common ground but will things last or fade away.

This book has a great story line and wonderful characters for any reader to enjoy.

This is for any paranormal romance book lover.

Searching for My Other Half

I had lost one mate and family before and I almost did not survive. Now I must seek a new Alpha mate in order for my pack to survive. Am I strong enough to meet this task?

The survival of my pack requires me to seek a strong mate and I don't have a lot of time to accomplish this task. My brother thinks all I need to do is to mate another shifter and all will be well. He does not understand that the wrong mate could destroy all that we have built.

This is a pretty dynamic read packed into a short format. They characters are well written and fully fleshed out. The action flows smoothly dropping off with a cliffhanger that seems to fall at a natural palse in the flow of the story whether than appearing to be a more contrived attempt to break what should be one continuous story into multiple parts. I enjoyed this read, and I look forward to reading part two!

This is going to be a great series if the first book is anything to go by. Lane is on the hunt for an Alpha Female to mate with so he can retain his Alpha position in the pack. He finds her in the form of Curvy Lane, but he has to tell her he is a wolf shifter first!
