There were definitely some things I enjoyed about this one. The action was good and kept things moving, but there were also a few things that didn’t quite work for me.
The timeline was confusing in places, and I felt like the romance needed more development. Based on the synopsis, I expected more of a buildup between the characters from the time they met to their marriage. Instead, we got more insight into his street dealings than we did into them actually developing as a couple, which left the relationship feeling a little underdeveloped to me.
I also finished the book still wondering about the title and how it connected to the overall storyline. Maybe I missed something, but I never really saw the connection.
Overall, I give it 3.5 stars.

(3.5⭐️) I enjoyed this story. It flowed well, the pacing was quick, and there was a suspenseful element sprinkled throughout to keep me turning the pages. I especially enjoyed the snappy dialogue and slick banter between the characters. Everybody was sarcastic and quick on their feet lol.
There was also something surprisingly compelling about the connection between D’Mario and Evette. These two had just met, yet they interacted like an established couple. 😂 But it didn’t read as instalove, despite how quickly they clicked. There was an ease to their connection that I really enjoyed. I also appreciated the intentional way they cared for one another, particularly when it came to each other’s safety. There was a tenderness to the way they showed up for each other that made their growing relationship feel believable, even if we didn’t get to see them actually fall in love.
And for anyone looking for a spicy read, this isn’t that.
I did have a couple of questions about the plot, though. Some of what initially felt like plot holes was addressed in the epilogue, so I appreciated getting that additional context. However, I’m still confused about the timing of everything, namely Rico’s prison stay and why the events of the story were only happening now. The epilogue gave me an explanation for the situation, but I’m still not sure the timeline completely makes sense, so that remained an unanswered question for me.
Overall, though, this was an enjoyable, quick-paced read. I liked D’Mario and Evette together, particularly the way they cared for and protected each other, and I appreciated that their connection felt effortless even when the circumstances around them were anything but. Would I have loved to see them actually fall in love? Absolutely. But this is marketed as urban fiction rather than urban romance, so the fact that the romance takes more of a backseat makes sense.
If you’re looking for a fast-paced urban fiction story with suspense, sharp banter, and a couple who click almost immediately, this one is worth checking out.
