Morocco, Maybe

Rate this book
An atmospheric love story …

Sara Meadows is an ambitious attorney who helps her mining-company client make billions, even if she has to bulldoze an ancient monastery and blackmail the opposition. Unsavory, true, especially since she once dreamed of a PhD in art history, but soon she’ll make partner at an elite firm. Not bad for someone raised on food stamps. A vacation to Morocco shouldn’t screw up anything.

It screws up everything.

Backpacking through Morocco, Sara meets an archaeologist who seems everything she is not: idealistic, spontaneous, and as down-to-earth as his digs. They explore fabled kasbahs and medieval medinas, sharing tales under Saharan skies. Over sips of mint tea, the two discover a mutual passion for history. And fall in love.

Sara’s newfound happiness would be perfect but for one tiny detail: the priceless monastery she’s demolishing is the same one the archaeologist is desperate to save. Navigating unexpected detours is hard enough. Betraying someone she loves is harder. The hardest part? Mustering the courage to defy her head and follow her heart.

Not only was this an interesting story, but I learned a lot about places in Morocco that are on my itinerary in May. A lawyer for a "mighty" law firm is engaged to a successful man in one of the most competitive business firms. They both make a lot of money and will be secure together for a lifetime together.

At an benefit for the fiancee's company, he surprises his fiancee with a 5 star trip to Morocco, exhibited at the museum auction. While browsing through the museum, his fiancee makes the acquaintance of a man who exclaims over the same art she loves. (The reader learns early on that she is not into making the small talk of her husband's business partners). She is surprised to learn that Kai is an architect who is trying to save a site that her company is trying to destroy in order to mine silver and make millions.

When her fiancee cannot get away from business and cannot go to Morocco at the time they both planned, she decides to go alone. It is in Morocco that she reconnects with Kai, the architect, who shares her art history passion. They develop a relationship and "Earmuffs," her nickname given to her by Kai, has to make some very important decisions about her life...

I could not stop reading this book...I read it in its entirety in two days.

The book got me through so many different, strong emotions. I was elated, then devastated, relieved, found some hope, feared the worst, fell in love and lost it all...

I thought it’s going to be a fun and light book about Morocco, discovering the culture and different places; adventure intertwined with a sweet romance. And I wasn’t disappointed. I learned many interesting facts and stories about historic moroccan cities; the book also brought back many memories from my trips to Marrakech, Essaouira and Sahara. Sara’s point of view was very similar to mine - the way she perceived the places, events, people or even food. It was almost like a diary I’ve never written. It made me dream about going to Morocco again, spending there a month or two, or maybe even staying there forever.

But the book was also MUCH more than that. Throughout the book we can follow Sara struggling to find her true self while making the most difficult decision of her life - living a secure and wealthy life with a good-looking man she doesn’t love or pursuing her heart’s desires? Moreover, she experienced the true meaning of friendship and focused on what really matters in life. In the end, she turned out to be much braver than I thought she was, and I am sure she was also surprised by her own decisions.

The book is well written, I like the author’s style. Characters are very well developed and unique; it’s impossible not to like them. Additionaly, I find the plot quite exceptional - at least I’ve never read a book like this one. There are many unexpected twists that make the book almost impossible to put down. I definitely recommend!

Best beautiful read!

Such a comfort read, thank you Alex for writing this novel. Loved how it went from romance, to independence, to family ties, and friendships, and careers and hobbies... way more layers than I expected!

I couldn't stop until it was over and Sara's story seemed to perfectly wrap up at the end. c: Can't wait to read more stories like this in travel fiction, and whatever else Alex Wu has written. :)

When I first started reading, Morocco, Maybe, I had several eye rolls as I immediately could tell that although a female narrator, it was written from a male perspective - not necessarily a bad thing, just an awareness as I believed this was going to be a long read. The first few chapters delved into what I call the stereotypical female brain as well as some cliches of relationships and engagements. I was waiting for something unique to occur without the predictability of a woman venturing on her own, woman finds man, woman is conflicted between new man and man back home, woman makes choice, etc. etc. Two thirds through the narrative, things escalated rather quickly where page after page had drama and action that makes your mind spin. In these instants, I appreciate the additions of social justice and protests in other countries as well as international law - adding a reality and bigger picture narrative to the themes of what one is fighting for.

The love story crafted for Sara and Kai is well developed and unraveled as the story progresses, especially when you think there is nothing more to learn. Where some love stories may seem repetitive and obvious, Wu showcases one that endures amongst multiple times of pain and deceit - still not being able to have what some may call a happy ending, but something real and cherished regardless of time. A quick read that can be categorized as Chick Lit, I believe Morocco, Maybe can be lifted up a peg to Women's Fiction as it delivers strong female empowerment themes beyond what we would see in a beach read.

Read Morocco, Maybe if you like the themes of:

Adventure
Travel
Romance

I received a copy of this book from the author and Goodreads giveaway for my unbiased opinion of the book. I really enjoyed this book it took me a while to read it but the story was well written. Once I got far enough into the story, I couldn't put it down. Sara is a high powered attorney at a prestigious law firm and gets what she wants by any means necessary and a fiancee that she thinks she loves. Through a chance meeting, she meets an archaeologist named Kai. She was immediately smitten and figured out he was on the job in Pakistan that she just kicked him out of, due to trying to shut down the dig so her company she represents can mine the precious material the site holds. Kai talks dreamily to her about Morrocco and what a good idea it would be to bid on the silent auction item. Instead, her fiancee wins it for her and then is unable to go. When she gets there and finds out Kai is on the same trip as she. They both decide to abandon the luxury trip to go backpacking across the country with Kai's friends. She realizes the more she gets to know him the more doubts she has about what she did to him and her life in general and if she even loves her fiancee. . Its a really great story about being at a crossroads and doing what is right and changing your path instead of going with the flow...

Having just returned from a tour of Morocco this book was a must read for me. The lead female character tours through Morocco with a group consisting of a charismatic Australian archeologist (of course there develops an attraction between them) and various 'free spirits' who get her to take a closer look at what her life means and what is important to her. The route she takes is almost the same as the one I took recently and so I enjoyed her take on the scenery, people and culture of Morocco. It's actually a really nice love story as well and doesn't end as you would expect.

Tender Love Story Set in an Amazing Place to Visit

After reading this book, which you definitely should, you’ll want to jump on a plane to Morocco. Besides being a well-crafted and tender love story, this book highlights the joys and journeys, adventures and amazement of traveling without an agenda which I’m drawn to. I was immediately brought back to the sounds and smells of Morocco- the good along with the nose-wrinkling kind. Pack this book in your suitcase-better yet- backpack and read it on your flight.

I visited Morocco years ago, so I was looking forward to a literary return to this contradictory country. That's exactly what I got with Morocco, Maybe . It is a dramatized travelogue that brings to life the exotic sights, sounds, and smells of each location. Readers are taken on a realistic sojourn across the country, showcasing not only its exotic beauty, but also its unpleasant realities. There were many scenes that brought me right back to my own trip, for better or worse.

But it's not just a travel guide, it's a delightful love story with an always clever, yet sometimes misguided, lead character. A bulldog in the courtroom, Sarah can be tentative in life, which made me love-hate her. She is rational, safe, consistent, and over-prepared, yet anyone who has traveled through a developing country knows that the spirit of adventure requires the antithesis. She gets better at it as she goes. And as she learns to embrace her adventure through Morocco, she also develops a new outlook to travel through life.

If you want a traditional romance book, you may be disappointed. While there are strong romantic elements, Morocco, Maybe doesn't follow a standard romance arc. It's subtle and complex, conflicted and melancholy. And it's definitely not a rom com despite the sometimes amusing rhetoric between Sarah and her travelmates.

Did I mention the legal thriller centered around a historic, archaelogical find? Yes, it's got a thread of John Grisham in the plot, which heightens the stakes and propels the tension through each chapter, especially toward the end.

The pace is contemplative, the writing is elegant, and the story is far more poignant than I expected at the start. There are a couple of characters and plot points that we've seen before--the loyal best friend, the misunderstanding--but the author effectively steers away from sappiness and sentimentality.

I am so glad I went on this touching journey to a far off place, and recommend this book to anyone who is a traveler at heart.

I was looking for a relaxing, romantic read while commuting between home and work.
I liked the characters and the book is well written.
During the trip to Morocco, we learned about the sights, which was interesting.
I thought I knew how the book will end but I was wrong because the unexpected twist changed everything.
I am looking forward to read the next book written by this author.

I absolutely loved this book! I am travelling to Morocco later this year and really enjoyed reading all of the places that were visited. The combination of the love story and the detailed exploration of Moroccan history were perfect.
